My brother is an avid anti-masker and I'm on chemo. He said that that's just the way natural selection works and anyone who has a generic weakness "deserves" to die. He also said that the quarantine isn't worth the cost to the economy impling that he'd rather have money than a living brother.

He's in town because my grandpa died but I think after the funeral I might have to cut him out of my life. With the chemo, pain, sickness, etc. I have enough negativity in my life I don't need more. It's just frustrating because we were close (he's a year and 8 days older than me). He even had my mother in tears and I tried saying, "let's agree to disagree," to which he yelled, "No!"

Anyways, sorry to vent. I haven't posted much but I believe people usually add something like, "this can die in usersub," on posts like this...

Edit: I'm surprised by how much this blew up and overwhelmed by how amazingly nice and supportive everyone has been. Thanks for all the kind words, support, offers to DM, etc. I know I've posted pieces of this in comments, but I've had the same questions asked a couple of times in comments and DMs so I thought I'd put the answers here.

Several people have asked what kind of cancer I have and here's the shorter answers (which is still pretty long). I have a weird presentation of an autoimmune disease called Sjogren's Syndrome, where your immune system attacks your salivary and tear glands. Usually this disease is f found in older women and they just have to take a pill or 2 and live with dry mouth and eyes, so my case being so severe plus me getting it when I was younger and I'm male which makes it an even odder presentation. I have to see an out of state Rheumatologist who does research into Sjogren's and related diseases. He actually refers to it as roboticKittenTamer's Disease because it's so unique. He's written medical journal articles for research he's done on my case. But it is behaving like a lymphoma so he's classified it as a "pseudo-lymphoma" and we've been using lymphoma treatments/chemos for about 11 years now (I first started showing symptoms in 2007 and had surgeries on my salivary glands, but my ENT didn't refer me to a Rheumatologist till 2009 and I'm 2010 I started seeing the out of state Rheumatologist and started chemo then). My Rheumatologist even shows my medical records to doctors all over the world when he's at conventions or wants a 2nd opinion. I've even been to hospitals like John's Hopkins to get experimental treatments. The bitch about it is I've always got pain in the sides of my face/neck (in front of my ears and down to the corner of my jaw and into my neck, where the parotid salivary glands are), it's just a matter of how much (lowest it gets is a 4 or 5, the worst is a 10). And I get flare ups where my pain just keeps getting worse until I take a large dose of IV steroids (usually 125 mg of solumedrol). I use to have to go to the ER every time I needed IV steroids but now I have chemo port (power port, and I have it accessed so the time/reaccessed every week by a bone health nurse) so I can give myself IV steroids at home. I use the frequency between flare ups to determine how well I'm doing. At the worst they got (probably summer of 2020) I was having a flare up ever 2 or 3 days. I was starting to do better on the latest chemo (Gazyva or obinutuzumab) but then I had to stop it in late November because I was hospitalized twice for pneumonia (the weekend before Thanksgiving and the weekend after) and then early December for kidney failure from the antibiotics (they think it was the vancomycin), but luckily I recovered and my kidneys bounced back without dialysis or damage and I'm starting the chemo back up again tomorrow.

What's my prognosis has also been asked a few times. This is hard to know since my condition is so unique there aren't really other cases we can look at to guess how I'll react to anything, but it's not likely to be directly terminal. But the treatments are slowly killing me/shortening my life (11+ years of high dose steroids and chemo are brutal on your body). So we've tried a bunch of chemos. Initially were found one that either for about a year and a half and then my body asked and it stopped working. We find another one that worked but quite as well, but it had me functional and working full time. After about 3.5 years it stopped working and for the past 5 years or so we've been trying to find another chemo that will work and we've tried radiation as well with out much luck.

I've also been asked how old he is a few times. He's 39 and I'm 38. I'm married with one kid and he's married with 3 kids.

Many people have suggested cutting him out now, and basically I have. My mom wanted me to bring my family up yesterday for dinner before my brother went home and I told her no and explained why. She was upset but said she understood and wants to try and fix things (I'm not sure that she can, but she's welcome to try). The only time I'll likely see him is at the funeral and viewing this next weekend which I guess he's flying back into town for. My dad said that he apologized to them but that I'm the one he needs to apologize to, but he hasn't tried to contact me.

Why wait till after the funeral. Sounds like he’s toxic and you don’t need that in your life.

Best wishes on beating cancer.

Fuck that guy, and not even in the fun way. You deserve better than he's forcing on you.

I am so sorry. Please know that your life has great value and there are so many of us who will fight to protect you during this pandemic.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Thank you. That really means a lot to me!

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't let anyone try the "you only have 1 family" bs with you. Ya'only got 1 appendix too but if it try killing you, you cut it out.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Your brother is a massive douchebag.

5 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 0

I hope your cancer is treatable. Sadly, your brother, the real cancer, is untreatable

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately it's a rare presentation that I've been fighting for 13+ years with varying success.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Sorry you’re fighting two cancers, OP.

5 years ago | Likes 353 Dislikes 1

Thanks

5 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 0

Sounds like he has made a ton of terrible choices in life.

5 years ago | Likes 243 Dislikes 2

Choices is giving him too much credit. He's a lapdog so guillible that when the fascists told him his family deserves to die he believed it.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ironically, he sounds like the type of person that would be "naturally selected" himself, if warning labels were removed.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

He will be very lonely some day.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

He is now, that's why he wants to belong to that group of people.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That super sucks, but man, best habit I started getting in to was cutting the toxic people out of my life. Heal fast, man.

5 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Wow, I'm sorry your brother is a complete tool.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I’m curious as to why you didn’t hold his feet to the fire by asking him, “So I deserve to die?” I’d make him say it.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Oh I did, but my mom was crying and her dad just died yesterday so I was trying to end the conversation.

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

If he brings that shit up again you can always point out that he's related to you and maybe he should just fuckin' die then.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Your brother might be a psychopath, he doesnt deserve you and your family.

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Your brother and cancer have something in common ... they can both fuck off.

5 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

You think you should cut him out? I think it's a forgone conclusion at this point. I'm terribly sorry but you need to focus on your own well

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

being right now and clearly he does not care. So, much like the cancer you're dealing with, you need to rid yourself of that cancer too.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hey OP! Hope you can overcome the cancer. Also I’m here to inform you that I’m your new brother!

5 years ago | Likes 90 Dislikes 0

This. Just msg whenever you need some company.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Awesome, thanks brother!

5 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Man... I just prayed for you and your family. You are strong.

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

donate to a non-religious cancer research charity instead of praying

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 6

I would just say not all religious cancer centers are bad and not all non-religious ones are good. It's not that clear cut / black & white.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

true just make sure it is a good charity that actually does meaningful work with the money

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes, I can't stress this enough for any/all charitable donations.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah that's pretty fucking selfish and cold. Fuck that guy.

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Empathy is dying quick and ugly in North America.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Don't put up with that

5 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 1

Sounds like your brother has a weak mind. Who the hell thinks letting tons of people die is "good for the economy"? Fuck that.

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Because of the lockdown. Primary argument against total lockdowns is that it tanks the economy short-term with unknown long-term consequence

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ya but if millions of people die or can not work we KNOW what the long term impact to the economy will be. It makes no sense.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Completely agree with you. I told my friends with this point of view that they severaly lack empathy in this regard

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Your own brother told you you deserve to die. Yeah...I’d say it’s time to cut that POS out of your life.

5 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Maybe be careful. He could try to purposely expose you to covid if he's being this hostile....stay safe.

5 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but he's been vaccinated (he's a dentist) which in some ways makes him a hypocrite...

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Being vaxxed doesn’t mean he can’t bring it to you on his hands or clothing @op Don’t let him near you, please! **offers a sisterly hug* :(

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

True, but although he might night care if I die, I don't think he'd go as far as killing me, but either way he just left to go home until →

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For real. Literally he's said @op's life should end. There's no take-backsies on that.

5 years ago | Likes 137 Dislikes 0

The worst part is that "Saving the economy" and "Saving lives" ARE THE SAME THING AND THEY DON'T GET THAT

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

That's not what Trump told them so they haven't gotten that far. They don't understand human capital is an actual thing in the economy.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

I like this comment

5 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yeah. He wished death on op. Why keep him around?

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Maybe he shares the right bloodtype, so having some spare organs around is a good thing. That is about the only use I see for that filth.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He thinks the weak should die. Does that sound like someone who'd donate organs?

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who said anything about him being willing?

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Uh because unless he consents, his organs & blood are useless to anyone but him??

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Thanks, that made me laugh!

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Just because you share DNA does not mean you need to keep toxic people in your life.

5 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 0

The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb! The family you choose is closer than those you're born with

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I love when people get this saying right.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I do agree, but family has always been important to me which doesn't make you wrong, it just makes it hard.

5 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

My brother seemed stunned when I pushed back on all his trump/both sides bullshit. Benghazi vs. Covid deaths? Really?!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm sure someone here would love to be your adoptive brother.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If a member of my family wanted me dead I'd probably be a little miffed

5 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You have no brother after he said that. Sorry.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Take the word family and think about it's connotations, joy, support etc. If it doesn't apply to blood relatives, they aren't truly family.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That is the type of shit my brother said to me and I cut him out for it. It hurts at first, but I promise you, life will be better after.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Doesn’t sound like that the feeling is mutual.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can’t completely cut out my toxic brother from my life but I recommend you do it if you can.I ended up limiting contact=much less toxocity

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I only saw him once or twice a year anyways.

5 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Aim for less, can’t tell you how nice it is to not hear “oh you worked yesterday? Nobody works harder than me” bs.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

You know they aren’t family when you wouldn’t give them a kidney if they asked because you wouldn’t trust them with such a gift.

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Would it be safe to say he would drop the "natural selection" bs if he had cancer?

5 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Yeah, or his wife or kids...
