The racism in the book is depicted just as ignorant and evil as racism actually is. And the protagonist stands up and fights against it.

Remove To kill a mockingbird for being uncomfortable, burn Fahrenheit 451 for it’s contents, and ban people from reading 1984.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Finally! I remember reading the book in 5th or 6th grade. Seemed pointless to me.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To kill a mockingbird is something I never would have chosen to read. Thanks to school, it is one of my favourite books/films. This sucks...

Isn't that the book the CIAs programmed assasins use?

Banning books because they make people feel bad? So "Farenheit 451" is coming to life

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Too bad nothing has been banned. And, according to the author, F 451 isn’t about banning books. Because he really hates TV.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's a beautiful book that makes you think. We wouldn't want kids thinking, now, would we? How would they pass the standardized test?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meanwhile schools in my district teach Ayn Rand.

TKAMB is my all time favorite novel. Atticus embodies the highest ethical qualities, his drive to see justice done inspires my own career.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's interesting that the people clamoring for its removal also clamor for "Always believe rape victims". They clearly need that book.

Honestly I hated that book. Kid was a little shit and it bored me. There are a lot of other interesting books out there. Classic != Good

This is old news. It happened in October, there was an outcry, and Biloxi Public Schools reversed its stance. It's all done already, folks.

Lets not forget people wanting to rewrite Tom sawyer something about to many N words...proves people are morons

And of course the ones who had that idea and pushed for it are still there and are pushing for the same shit.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, there was another district in Minnesota that just pulled this and another book off their reading list

They also banned Huckleberry Finn. Again. Mark Twain was shocked that children had been allowed to read it--- and "unexpurgated Bibles".

They think it's racist. The irony is the point of the book was to not succumb to prejudice.

8 years ago | Likes 491 Dislikes 1

One of the book themes is the difference between prejudice and racism

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

So the book version of 12 angry men? I've never read the book, it wasn't in my schools curriculum here (Europe)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It is in my school curriculum (Germany).

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It wasn't in Austria but i went to a relatively small school and it's been quite a few years ago ^^

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure the right way to get kids to read books, but the way schools did made me resent it, and now I only read articles and papers.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I still enjoy fiction, just.. either by watching or playing it. I have ZERO interest in reading my stories.

1i was pissed with the book selection for my english class so i told the teacher i'm gonna read a book of my choosing and present it instead

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 she went along with it and from then on everyone could pick their own books to read and present. A lot of people did and liked reading

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 a lot better that way. English wasn't the native language btw. we still had to read bullshit books in German class

Because of the metoo debate a painting from John William Waterhouse 1896 has been removed from a gallery. This makes me sad.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It depends on the district. Remember these schools aren't all run by one entity.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They have been for about 10 years, some people call it the snowflake generation, where people have been too sheltered.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

It's not sheltering that is at fault. Sheltering is just a symptom of a larger problem. You may notice that this only affects college /
