I've transformed the library shelves after 15 years

Got transfered to this library last year. The shelf arrangements has been that way since 2003 to the point if being creepy.

I've transformed the library shelves after 15 years

Financial is dire. It's time for DIY.

Add in some fabulous colors

And new arrangements

Then I plug in some spanking new shelving system aims for casually browsing users.

I've transformed the library shelves after 15 years

Here's the whole library team.

As a librarian - what an amazing idea and I am totally stealing it. Keep up the astonishing work!

This is terrific. Absolutely stellar. Libraries are important.

Dude. I'm shouting out right now Patrick at our pleasant hill ca library. Amazing librarian.

Librarians around are probably having a massive, extensively knowledgeable orgasm.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nicely done. Those colors are very vibrant.

To me librarians are the holy women and men of knowledge. Keep up the good work, I love what you've done with the place!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I can't upvote this enough

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Looks really great! Good job, @OP.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not going to lie, but I'm not a fan of the set-up. Good on you for doing something for the betterment of others.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 8

I don't think the setup is bad it's just the room itself is bland, the floor is too bright with the wall color

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

It could use some softer lighting as well.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

OP made a Reading Rainbow!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Woah you guys from Malaysia? If so where's your library at? Sorta interested in going there.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Wow it looks so much more spacious afterwards, well done!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I wish I could be working at a library and doing some heavy lifting, BUT NO I'M A FUCKING SERVER AT A CAFE FOR HIPSTERS FUCK

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Find a local library and volunteer? You can help hipsters find the books they'll hate before they are popular.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Bro I don't think heavy-lifting jobs are in too short of supply, if you REALLY want to point your life in that direction.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nothing wrong with a bit of heavy lifting, I've been at stonemasonry for years now, pay's fantastic and you never have to go to the gym!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nothing wrong at all, I do a little bit myself.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You've all done an excellent job!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Never thought of finding a fellow malaysian on this site! Kudos on your project!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah for great libraries.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love this! Aesthetic is so much more important to access than people give it credit for.

8 years ago | Likes 507 Dislikes 5

No, no it's not. Yknow what's so much more important than people give it credit for? ACTUAL FUNCTIONALITY. You need to walk 4x as far now.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 185

And you increase collisions with people because everyone has to walk in the same space now. Not enough room to squeeze behind those shelves.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, you walk to the shelf you want a book from, then take 5 steps to a table. Less walking. Need an extra book later? Only 10 steps.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Walking is good for ya mate.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

An inviting space (with, from what I can tell, MORE functionality, but okay) creates access by making people want to use the services 1/

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 2

& resources provided. A drab, depressing space doesn't make people want to spend time there. Less inviting = less accessible.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 2

No. In the old one I would've zig zagged looking for the category I want, this way is much easier to find what you want

8 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 1

It's called "walking down the middle of a couple aisles" vs crossing back and forth the entire library

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 42

If you be crossing back & forth, you don't understand the dewey decimal system/the way numbers work.

8 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

People often need more than one thing

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 33

Oh... so you're saying labeling things DOESN'T help people find them. Sound logic there bud.

8 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 2

Did I say anything about labels? no. I said spreading the shelves out across the entire building is way less functional than before.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 13

Yeah, you said aesthetic doesn't work, compared to basic functionablity, aka the way it was before, without labels.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The point you seem to be arguing really only makes sense if you need several books off every single bookshelf, which is rare

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That last picture is the cover of your new album.

My library made my life and saved my life. It looks wondertastic.

8 years ago | Likes 186 Dislikes 2

I will share when I can grab a moment tonight. Rather full day at the moment.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd like to know more about your library and how it's so intertwined with you :)

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Yeah, how did it save your life? Just curious.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Why the facemasks?

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 5

I was thinking 15 years of unsettled dust.

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nobody cared who they were til they put on the mask.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Could be sick, or fashion, or many other reasons. In Asia it's really common to see people wearing face masks.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

This. It's considered rude to not be wearing face masks while visibly sick in east asian countries. But most likely it's for the glue.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dust, probably

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

it's haram to get high as fuck sniffing glue

When I woke up the next morning, I just ate around the part I came into. It was a good watermelon.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Weird question, but why are the women wearing safety masks, but the guy isn't, in that one picture?

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Apparently that guy has really bad breath

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Could be too macho and cool for respiratory protection. I met plenty of people like that when I worked in an electronics factory.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Maybe, but they're just hanging wallpaper that's self adhesive, what kind of residue causes that?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not just glue fumes, but dust as well. They're just taking precautions.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I dunno, seems suspicious.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MACHO MEN NO NEED MASKS

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They probably have a cough or cold, common practice in a lot of Asian countries stops viruses spreading in densely populated cities

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

See, that would make sense but they aren't wearing it in later pictures. So either they were taken far apart or it's weird.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Occams razor mate: It's a DIY job, there's no HSE dictating they have to wear PPE, women wanted to wear one, guy didn't feel the need.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

They were wearing masks to avoid sniffing glue

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It looks like they took the masks off for that last picture together

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Note: The masks aren't on their person either. So it's not a quick removal either.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bahaha not possibly in the back pocket or on a table out of shot?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok, but if it was because they had a virus or a cold, they wouldn't remove them for a picture... That was kind of the point.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not such a hardline rule that they can't take the masks off for two minutes to pose for a picture

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That, or, the guys are too tough for the masks. 50/50

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not really "Too tough" So much as there... Just mightn't be much need for it. Done plenty of this kind of work, it's not ALWAYS 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

necessary, they might've been wearing it because they don't have much experience doing this, and wanted to be sure they were safe 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Kinda sexist, but tough or not, what really requires a mask?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fumes. I'm not saying it's a sound decision making process on either side. Wearing masks if you have a cold is a super common thing though

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0
