What’s that thing with Seinfeld???

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

WTF?!? MARS is getting a Tesla before me?!?!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I kinda want to be so fantastically wealthy that I can literally make a custom, 1 of a kind car.. And then launch it to space.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hope the tires are deflated so they won't 'splode!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If only...if only...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

why not send taters 'n shit?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"if it doesn't blow up on ascent" Risk management 101 from a CEO who's actually good at the EO part.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

also he's aware that batteries sometimes combust with rapidly changing altitude

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fuck yeah, real world Tony Stark is the best!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ol' Musky at it again.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But will it have a solar panel to mitigate battery drain?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Dude he copied my dream idea he is going to send a tesla roadster to mars, my dream idea is a flying laborghini that can go anywherein space

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

i'm hearing the magic school bus theme for some reason

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

"So you're saying all we gotta do is make it to mars orbit to finally get a tesla pops?"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Doesn't Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy have the words "Don't Panic " emblazoned on the cover or some shit? Why the sign?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

The fictional one does. The novel written by Douglas Adams tends to have "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" on the cover instead.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

My leather bound copy has Don't Panic on it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Can confirm. but they also have the words "Don't Panic" on the backside usually

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Based on my own HHG collection (more than a dozen different editions, I'm that kind of completist), I'd say usually not.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It must be nice to be rich. Especially when you can do this on the investors' dime.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Normally they would use a chunk of metal. He sacrifices a car and creates a huge PR stunt. It generates more revenue.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The investors benefit too

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Since it's fine to use that kind of money for what is essentially a dick measuring contest, why not carve a dick in the moon instead?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 8

What do you mean by kind of money? It's a test flight (higher chance of RUD) and it's Musk's Tesla Roadster.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If it succeeds all it will be is an eternal reminder of a billionaires vanity and self promotion, in orbit. If it was all about test,no need1

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

to personalize/glorify/make an eternal hint to a company owner. That is what I mean. It's not about science, but who has the greatest dong2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If ANY of you STILL dont get it, think about how cool would you be about leaving a huge Microsoft/Trump?whatever logo in orbit, for "test"

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If Microsoft's goal was to improve mankind's chance of survivability by bringing us to mars, I'd be happy to support their logo in space.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

What a waste. I wonder if it detaches.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

Why ? They have to test the falcon heavy and can't do it with a commercial payload or anything with value.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I think this is great, I hate the musky circlejerk and don't think he is a tech-Jesus but I hope this works out.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Just for promotion if anything else, I don't even own any TSLA

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Absolutely for promotion, yes he's about getting to Mars but he's also about making it profitable. Which isn't a bad thing really.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He’s not at all a tech genius, most of the stuff he uses is just off the shelf. He is however a getting shit done genius.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You sass that hoopy Elon Musk? Now there's a frood who really knows where his towel is at.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

he's gonna land it on mars so he has something to drive when he gets there

8 years ago | Likes 81 Dislikes 4

Moving vans won't cut it where he's going

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

When he gets home*

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 1

Calm down Eobard

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He should probably deflate the tires, lest they blow up in space.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

When's the launch date?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sometime in January.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't believe you, him, or anyone.

8 years ago | Likes 585 Dislikes 15

I don’t believe you.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've got a friend on the inside. It's real. It's happening.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

I belive you fall under "anyone". He doesn't believe you. lol

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He made a tunneling company as a joke. He will do this, even if it's the last thing he will ever do on this Earth. (Which might not be long)

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 1

Well, it started as a joke, then he decided he wanted an underground lair, and made the process very boring and serious.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Who hurt you?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

He did it

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Even me?

8 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 2

Depends on your post, but I can't smell.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Especially you.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Holy shit. These usernames

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

username checks out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I don't believe that you don't believe.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So he's planning an updated Heavy Metal style launch? https://youtu.be/t_KXgFpguE0

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

I was thinking the exact same thing!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

*Gets killed 20 seconds later.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It’s ok the us government was quick to say he can’t do it

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Because they own space?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Fake news

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So real question.... If it's an electric car, does that mean he could literally drive it on Mars?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I would assume so. Not that the terrain would likely suit, and it's a long way from a charging station...

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Just land it near Curiosity and swap the batteries, it'll be fine

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My guess is the lack of an atmosphere might cause overheating issues, since heat will be much harder to vent with no air to vent it into.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Mars has an atmosphere though. If anyone's driving it, it will have hit the planetary surface.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It has, but veeeeery little. Basically it is almost vacuum.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How will it be in deep space when it's in mars orbit? Is Mars orbit deep space? For me deep space sounds like outside our solar system

8 years ago | Likes 140 Dislikes 8

It's almost like this is fake.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Deep space is generally considered to be outside any planet or moon's sphere of influence.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Good question. @NASA?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Deep space is just like, far. It should refer to what you are thinking and what we know as deep space should just be called "far".

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most dictionaries I've checked pretty much list it as synonymous with "outer space". So "not planetary/orbital", essentially.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im guessing its as far out from any planet that you wont fall back down on it. Out of the gravitational reach.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It will not enter orbit around Mars. It will travel as far out as Mars' orbit around the sun. Reasons are too complex for Imgur posts.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For me deep space sounds like op's mom's vagina

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 6

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Deep space is anywhere beyond the moon atm

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Its just outside the earths gravity. Deep space is so far out that you wont fall back down on earth.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The orbit is probably round the sun, to the same outer distance as Mars. Mars is in the wrong place for an ideal launch.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Ideal opportunities are every two years or so.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's also the problem of planetary protection, I doubt they'd risk contamination in case insertion into orbit failed & car fell to Mars.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

42

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It won't be in orbit around Mars. It'll be in a similar orbit as Mars around the sun.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mars I believe is the closest, or second closest after venus, planet to us. So in our solar system but still millions of miles out

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Deep space usually just means away from the immediate planet-moon area. Not interstellar space.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Inside our solar system is interplanetary space. Close to earth you have low to high orbit and past a certain point we call it deep space

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

2) but it is still very close to earth in regards to the size of our galaxy.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

it's is a relative term with respect to whichever planet you're currently on. this mission will mark the first time we needed to discuss it.

8 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 4

Not really, we've done loads of deep space probes to other planets/comets/celestial dwarfs. It just doesn't come up much cuz no one cares

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

*no one Ceres.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

deep space is for sure a relative term tho. It's deep relative to earth, it will need to be constantly revised in the future.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Lol, we're still revising "leaving the solar system" because Voyager keeps hitting new distance records and we're trying to keep it relevant

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Voyager 1 is currently about to leave our solar system but NOW that someone shoots a car to mars we need to discuss it?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thats why I said >about< to leave, since it's hard to tell where the border is, but it will eventually be crossed.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually it’s been determined it has left, on June 25th of... a year.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Im guessing deep space is so far out from any planet that you wont fall back down onto it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's Yancy's dance style.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think that's known as Interstellar space.

8 years ago | Likes 93 Dislikes 3

Interstellar means beyond the Solar (our) system. It would be interplanetary space, or deep space as it is beyond the Earth/Lunar system.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, so it's not really deep space, more like "Im14andthisisdeep" space. Gotcha!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

about as deep as Jayden Smith

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Interstellar space is literally the space between stars, like outside the Oort Cloud.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

No, that is a movie, alright alright alriiight?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

will just be awkward, once we populate mars, to call satellites in mars orbit in deep space, but moon satellites are not in deep space.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It will be awkward once we populate mars, when the orbit decays and the car smashes into the surface on the colony.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suspect our definition of 'deep space' will change. Maybe to something like "beyond human inhabited planets or common routes between them"

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I think it's a relativistic term. Living on Mars, satellites around Earth would be in deep space relative to your location.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just change the definition of Deep Space to be 'space beyond the natural satellite(s) of a human inhabited planet furthest from Earth.'

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ok, dictionary time: space well outside the earth's atmosphere and especially that part lying beyond the earth-moon system.I'll go with that

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

works for me. (I didn't find any definitive answer in my own brief search, though NASA's "Deep Space Network" is a thing to consider too)

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I always thought it space that wasn't interstellar, but away from a dominant gravity source other than the sun, and in relative vacuum. (to

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

exclude space close to the sun and dense solar winds.) But that's just my feeling about what it should be.
