Chuck Edwards - North Carolina Town Hall - Republican
https://edwards.house.gov/contact
"You're taking away my Social Security."
"I will not sit down, I will stand up it's my right."
"He's a veteran."
"You're pulling out a veteran."
"He's earned the right to speak."
"What happened to free speech?"
"What happened to free speech?"
"Let him speak."
calenti
Yeah, they do get to do this to you. Elections matter.
GreatOdinsTaint
This is why the GOP has told all Republican Congressmen to immediately stop doing any town halls for their constituents. While they don't give a shit about these people either way and will just have their toadies assault and violate their rights, this kind of video is bad for PR. They know that if this gets out of hand they might have a blue wave for the midterms, assuming there is ever a real election again.
HeHeHebieJeebies
So my takeaway is you need a distraction to get all the cops to gang up in one place then lock the doors behind them and you get some quality time with the politician... check.

"You're pulling out a veteran! He's earned the right!"
No.
We all have the right to speak regardless if there was military service or not. If you live in this country and pay taxes, you "earned" the right to tell your representatives to fuck off and you're unhappy.
OptimisticMisanthrope
You make a great point, and I completely agree with you. However, I understand where the person who yelled that was coming from. The idea of stripping the right of free speech from a person who volunteered to defend that very right feels especially egregious.
Icanassureyou
Vets voted for those. Hard. Not all, bit enough who thought they were patriots. FAFO
DiracsDelta
The vote split from veterans was about 65% vs 34%. Itâs significant, donât get me wrong. But keep in mind, he got like 82% of white evangelicals, and 69% of white men without a college degree.
DMSledge
two thirds of people voted for the guy whose least offensive thing was calling them suckers.
zanaria
Social Security is paid for by workers, it's NOT paid from taxes. Taking it away is literally stealing from workers, not "cutting unnecessary spending"...
TacoPoweredHelicopter
In the USA Ragan changed it into a tax... The government is by law allowed to take from it, so every bit they pay out is money they can't take. That's how they see it.
philmoregraves
Angry old vets gonna run this one like it's their last tour and they don't care if they come back from it. Admin better chill on it if they think vets aren't willing to die for their country

So true but it's still sad because people they know and love will probably be affected by these crazy stunts the powerful people pull and yet they still side with them if I was there most I would've done was stopped anyone from physically attacking someone even if they deserved it but I'd let the people say whatever they had to and not just escort them out
KommanderKayriel
Always have. Modern police came from slavecatchers and murderous union-busters. They always serve the powerful against the poor. Even when they 'help us', they're just keeping the illusion that we have protectors, so we aren't up in arms rioting against the rich.

One of the greatest ironies in recorded history, harping on about clearing Washington of corrupt politicians meanwhile your supporting a felon propped up by a load of billionaires that share none of your interests. What drones. We really gonna need that department of education back

I find it incredible how insanely stupid a person has to be to elect someone with hundreds of millions of dollars who lies about everything. Let alone all his other faults. Its the single biggest disappointment in society i have experienced in 60 years besides war. đ

BeckyNosferatu
I did not. I did NOT vote for this shit. I know plenty of people who did NOT vote for it. Stop spreading that shit, because the real reason it happened is most people decided to be fucking silent.
Shilanas
Being Silent = Accepting and Agreeing with the wining vote.
There is only 2 outcomes for this statement. Either YOU DID vote for him, or YOU DID NOT vote for him. Not voting at all, Donkey Voting, Voting for him because you didn't think he'd win, it's all a choice.
He won the Electoral and the Popular vote (49.8% of votes), meaning he had the highest percentage of voters, which means The Majority Of Votes Were For Him rather than Any Single Other Person.
BeckyNosferatu
I did NOT vote for him. I voted Harris. It's not my fault the rest of the fucking country failed.
foreverinchains
Anything other than a vote for Harris was, in fact, a vote for Fat Nixon. Anyone who voted third-party, or did not vote, voted for him.
The overwhelming majority of Americans chose this outcome, through their action or inaction.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. - Rush

Thank the GOP state legislature for purging about 750k voter registrations. Trump won by about 150k from what I remember.
todayok
246,000 hadn't voted in the last 2 elections which isn't completely unreasonable to require them to confirm and update their registrations. The remaining 500,000 had moved, died, been convicted of a felony, or duplicate profiles found.
The real issue is 18-24 (51%) and 25-40 (61%) year olds couldn't get off their asses to vote.
SerinSymphony
The bluest part of the state was also decimated by Hurricane Helene. Multiple factors affected the vote turnout.
todayok
Helene dissipated by Sept 29. NC early voting started Oct 17. The election was Nov 5.
SerinSymphony
And hundreds of thousands of people experienced catastrophe that they're still trying to recover from. I can only hope I'd be ready to vote only a month out from being hit by such a storm, it'd feel like a god damn miracle.
IrishPub
Idk how any of that shit was allowed. Trump should not have won, but Dems just can't be fucking bothered to stand up.

Late summer and fall is going to be fun when the farmers are in full revolt since he pretty much cut off all their funding. Hopefully climate change calms down this year and we don't have to deal with crop failures as well.

Many people treat politics like you do sports. You pick somebody because you "like" them. You vote for them. You cheer them on. You trash-talk the "other team." Many of those types are having their wake-up call. We can only hope that it also plants a spark of empathy in them for all Americans.

Pay no attention to these bigots. They're no better than MAGA. We all have to unite against the oligarchs. Full stop. I'm grateful to you and proud of you!
SpectralSpider
They did. But do you want to leverage this to give them class consciousness for the first time in 40 fucking years, and maybe have them target oligarchs/fascists/republicans instead of minorities? Or do you wanna be smug?
ssjalhazred
It's not about being smug, it's about realistic expectations. I welcome people waking the fuck up, but how much waking up can you really expect from a cult? From decades of propaganda and indoctrination? Consequences do not deprogram.
Rationalization is easier than epiphany. "There must be a good reason." "If Trump knew this was happening he would stop it." "What was I supposed to do, vote Democrat?" That's all it takes. Consequences do not deprogram.
GTimgur
They want to be smug. People like them are no better than MAGA bigots, too busy patting themselves on the back to join together to fight the oligarchs. They want to laugh at others failing to escape prison, instead of help bring it down.
SpectralSpider
No better? Not at all? Not even a little? Hmmm?
GTimgur
Indeed. They are only gleeful to watch their enemies be destroyed, rather than heal or improve anything. Sounds exactly like MAGA to me.
SpectralSpider
And the fact that their enemies are fascists, and not historically oppressed groups has no bearing on that evaluation?
RyanH42
They'll just dismiss you as a communist and continue to vote Republican. They're a lost cause not even worth the effort.
SpectralSpider
It's crazy that you'd say that, because Bernie Sanders is visiting towns like this one, directing anger towards billionaires, and is doing numbers.

Serious questions from abroad:
Do you guys expect the dismantlement of your country and its democracy will stop with the next elections?
Do you expect there will be enough democracy left for elections to actually happen at regular next terms?
If you answered the questions with yes, what is the plan then, continue to swing between dems and reps every few years, but now watching dems trying to rebuild what has been lost, and then watching reps destroying the country again?
GTimgur
...what? The forces of evil will never go away. If that's what you want, go live in lala land and let the adults work on solutions to keep the good from getting squashed. Less than 23% of Americans voted for the current executive. Congress is more important anyway. Until lobbyism is ended and probably corporate law overhauled, change politics significantly at the federal level will only happen with populist movements (as with Zelensky).
ssjalhazred
I'll put it like this... I think in the next couple hundred days, we're going to know if this is going to go on for a couple hundred days or if it's going to go on for 4000 days. If social security really does collapse it may be much sooner than a couple hundred days, too.
One way or another I don't see how we get through another 47 months of this as-is.

Pretty sure that Veterans voted for Trump at 65%. If 65% of them had voted for Harris then that would have probably been enough to flip almost everything blue.
Veterans was very crucial in how this election ended and they picked Trump. This is also following decades of Veterans voting against their own best interests.
I get trying to stand up for Veterans but they got what they voted for and they are definitely part of the problem.
TexMexHex
I know 3 older vets. 2 are related, 1 is coworker. All voted for this.
EternallyIgnorant
I 100% agree with you about the blanket attack against Vets, for sure. WIth that said "12% of the voters in this presidential election had served in the U.S. military and 65% of them said they voted for Donald Trump, while 34% said they voted for Kamala Harris."
Fitzapollo
And I get that, but a third is alot of people.

I'm a veteran and I'm not like this, but most of the guys I served with are outright fascist MAGA cultists, and the vast majority of veterans and service members in general are either Republicans or libertarian anarcho capitalists. I've had to cut most of them out of my life because theyve become just that toxic. I am happy to see that at least some are starting to wake up though.

Facts! They were okay with the "others" suffering! Foolish enough to vote for suffering of others because empathy is a sign of intelligence.
For example 1901 Roosevelt tried a health plan, other attempts 1914, 1915 AALL, FDR in 1930s Truman 1945 all plans blocked because of the "others" will get health care. Crony capitalist used fear of mexicans black and socialism to get ppl to vote against their own best interest.
Biased beliefs bolstered by propagandised media worked well then & now!

Aristocrats
Reagan did. He went to the Supreme court and got them to say its just a tax like any other and the it can be spent however the government decides to spend it. And the democrats have spent 50 years getting their teeth kicked in trying to convince voters that if they got a large enough majority they'd protect it. The voters told them to fuck off and screamed at them why aren't you stopping the Republicans we gave power to.
grumbleghoul
Iâm not disagreeing with anything youâve stated, and maybe the overall tone of my response is because Iâm just a little disillusioned with politics in general anymore, but with 20 of the 36 years between Reagan and now under democrat leadership with at least 6 years of majority in house and senate youâd think maybe some of that would have been reversed, regardless of the opposition they faced.. it appears this issue was only a real priority on the campaign trail.
Aristocrats
A majority isn't enough because of the rules system. A vote doesn't do it. Unless they burned it all down, as the GOP is doing now. And those "majorities" involved significant number of independents that along with Angus we're counting as Dems, along with so called blue dogs who as Manchin /Sinema are really corporatists bought and installed to be the fulcrum those who finance the GOP use to move the levers of power. Biden's legislation could be described as passed w -1 vote majority.

That's what I keep telling people! They're getting very close to a few lines. They ignore the courts and don't respect the system. Policy could slow them down but it was never going to stop them. The bill today gave him more power technically but he was just gonna do it anyways. They're speed running it too fast and have the resolve of a sobbing Elon because his magic number went down. It's like dictatorship for dipshits.
ChiefRunningFridge
There's cracks showing because a number went down and some people are yelling at them. They plan to stand up to the generals? They think they've seen backlash. I don't think they have the balls to weather the real extra judicial backlash. This is the easy part.
DiracsDelta
Except⌠havenât they? Like several times? I understood that to be most of the reason itâs expected to run out for most people.
wetqueef
No. They borrow money from the trust fund. SS takes in enough money to run itself but congress âborrowsâ it. The simplest solution is to end the cap on how much income can be eligible for SS withholding (andor tie it to COLA).
rubypilgrim
It's been regularly looted by politicians like Bush Jr to pay for things like his unfunded wars. Those funds have never been paid back. Meanwhile, our leaders haven't been paying attention to the trade deficit (remember Reagan "deficits don't matter"?), and they've been selling off public assets to wealthy corporate and international interests. As a result our assets have been depleted as our debts have grown. Now these billionaires are looting the last of our wealth, rather than investing in-
rubypilgrim
our growth. It's a common corporate game. Social Security would have been fine if it hadn't been looted, if they had continued growing the national public wealth by investing in infrastructure (including schools) and if they'd paid more attention to keeping the national debt far below our income. I have a longer rant about this but I think it's about time to move on to cat pics and videos.
XXXSpork
Yep. Some jackass in the 80s thought it would be a good idea to tax it.
DiracsDelta
Didnât they also âborrowâ from it several times? With repayment in limbo, or so I heard.
XXXSpork
Raised age requirements too
Greymalum
The tax actually replaces some funds, so it's not completely all bad as it still stays in the SS fund. However, yes, I agree taxing the impoverished who receives social security is immoral and should be reserved for those with higher incomes.
XXXSpork
It was a way to reduce payout without calling it a cut. They need to raise the income cap for taxation.
arajad
Along with taxing government employees. Federal taxes taken out of federal wages.
FrancsTireur
For the last 40 years it's been considered "the third rail of American politics", meaning you touch it and you die.
This is a good thing in the sense that it stopped it being privatised by Bush Snr, and it stopped borrowing against it like what happened under Reagan.
But it's a bad thing in that it's also prevented anyone from trying to fix it, because it is a broken system designed for a far smaller population who were living much shorter lives.
It's a bit like the NHS in Britain, if you 1/
rubypilgrim
It was never meant to be the only retirement program for Americans. American companies used to have things called "pensions" that workers paid into. Also 401ks and Roth IRAS that companies contributed to along with whatever portion of income the employee diverted to those accounts, up to a legally allowable amount. Unions also had pension plans. With all those structures in place, people could lead pretty stable lives.
FrancsTireur
Go near it without a wheelbarrow full of cash, people assume you are going to cut it, steal from it, reduce it, borrow against it, privatise it etc and then all hell breaks loose. 2
Raziel420
Not so much a broken system because of people living longer lives (they aren't in the US) or numbers being to high. It was always based on constant population growth, which has slowed as the economy has changed over the past 40 years. The trust fund being rolled into the general fund was a different monster, but social security has always been funded.
anotherdickat
RoevWade was a 3rd rail too...
FrancsTireur
Eh not really, there was always an element in the GOP who wanted to override it going back 30 years and would publicly campaign on doing so. Social security was that thing both sides barely acknowledged out of sheer terror. Hence the outrage now.
