Turned an old RF-only TV into an arcade monitor! DANGER! High voltages. DO NOT attempt

I got this CRT arcade monitor chassis from AliExpress

Hacked it into this TV

Super safe degauss hookup (don’t do this!)

It looks good!

Kitten tax

Just don't think too much about what is really happening in Dig Dug.

I dig that dug

I haven't played video games since arcades in the '80s (with exception of Wow Wow Wubbzy with grandchildren 2 decades ago) but have fond memories of PacMan, Frogger, DigDug, Joust, Moon Lander, Missle Command, and others.

Why did you lose interest in the medium?

I read it more just there weren't much in the way of arcades, in many areas they basically died out.

Correct. I enjoyed the social aspect of the arcades as much as the games. I know communities form around games via the internet but I'm an older guy and find RL activities and interactions to be more meaningful and satisfying to me.

In the 80's my electronics instructor called that "jeeping a TV".
Alas with search engine algorithms now being useless I'm unable to verify that with sauce.

This is great. I love this stuff and wish I had any of the skills to make stuff like this happen. It's on my wish list of things to learn. Thanks for sharing.

Watch Adrian’s Digital Basement on YouTube to learn about CRTs :)

The future of mankind could depend on learning how to play a perfect game of Pacman.

Why does the clip has the video of Pacman, but the audio from Wizzball?

I’m using a multigame board

CRT... See nothing scary, but some ghosts to chase.

That little sticky outie part on the back is the screwdriver zone. It's where you run your metal screwdriver back and forth to release all the zaps.

man I miss CRTs. Even the ones we have left are dying & there's no replacement parts being made for the tubes or flybacks. It especially sucks since the tube is a wear item.

I don't particularly miss CRT TVs, but CRT computer monitors were a whole different ball game. The fact my 20" retro system monitor can comfortably do 1920x1440@72hz really shows just how much better CRT TVs could have been if they made one to the same quality.

HD CRT TVs existed, but they were quite rare. We had one from Philips that even came with an HDMI port. By the way, modern CRT shaders are quite astonishing and on a high-res, high refresh screen with an emulator running in RetroArch using their next-frame response tech, the experience is pretty much the same as on original hardware. CRTs can be simulated down to the smallest details - like scanlines, subpixels and even the scanlines - these days.

The main thing I want from CRTs is the response time. Even with modern OLED displays like the one 240hz one I'm using right now don't compare to CRTs when it comes to motion clarity. on my retro computer, I can literally drag a window as fast as I can and still be able to clearly read the contents of it. I can't do that even on an OLED panel without smearing. OLEDs are getting close, which is why I bought one, but they're not quite on the level of CRTs yet unfortunately.

even the 1080i TV CRTs don't really compare to computer monitors imo, computer monitor CRTs were just in a class of their own for the most part. You didn't really get what those crt filters do on monitor CRTs unless you were running a resolution that was too high for the monitor's dot pitch.

Damn, this is cool AF. I would definitely love to see more of this project as I am an enthusiast as well. Are you planning on building out an entire cabinet or was this more of an experiment for fun? I get the feeling you've done something like this before.

I’m planning to built a modular arcade. I’ll make a box frame for the monitor and then have a separate case for the joystick/buttons that will connect with a cable to the monitor box

Does it irritate anyone else that they grab 2 pills in a row without a single ghost nearby? Anyone? Just me?

I don't remember starting the game with 5 lives.

Playing and recording at the same time lol

Nice work on hooking it up without (hopefully) any shocking outcomes!
