Normal to critical condition in under 12 hours

Nov 19, 2019 9:11 PM

This is Ivy. She’s a 3-year old chihuahua-Italian Greyhound-kangaroo-baby deer mix who came to us through Houston and Hurricane Harvey.

This weekend she was acting completely normally: healthy appetite, playful but had some diarrhea on Sunday evening. Since she still seemed okay, I just thought she ate something weird and would be pooping fine the next day.

At 3:30am Monday morning, we were awoken to the smell of blood and feces in our bedroom. She was just standing there on the floor, completely dazed, with blood and tissue dripping out of her butt. My boyfriend and I rushed her immediately to the animal ER. We had to wrap her in a towel to stop the blood from seeping out, but it wouldn’t stop. Edit: Cleaning up the bedroom after the fact was not fun.

She arrived in critical condition and stayed that way for 20 hours. She received liters of fluid and a blood AND plasma transfusion. They were able to get her blood pressure up and stop the bleeding. After multiple tests, the vets diagnosed her with hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, the cause of which is unknown. They didn’t see a foreign object in her intestines, so not sure if she ate something and passed it or contracted an infection.

I have never heard of this condition but obviously it can come on very quickly, usually within 24-hours. Ivy definitely would have died if we hadn’t taken her to the vet when we did.

I guess I want to let other dog owners know about this, although I can’t say there were any warning signs, other than the regular (not bloody) diarrhea she had the previous evening. Take diarrhea seriously.

And before any of you self-righteous people want to say anything about ‘this is part of owning a dog’ or ‘you shouldn’t spend money you don’t have’ just shut it. I’m sharing a post about my dog.

Nobody thought you were complaining about the cost or responsibilities of pup ownership. We all want your dog to be healthy and strong!

"Take diarrhea seriously" - wisdom of the ages

6 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

That was my goal

6 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

@YouThinkHesGoneHesNeverGone my dog had the same condition when I adopted her, it was so scary. I'm happy to hear your pup is doing better!

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Jesus thank god you woke up for that

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Scary. She is a lovely looking mix. The Italian greyhound part makes her look less pathetic.

6 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Haha, thank you. She can do the sad Sarah MacLaughlin eyes very wellthough

Quote of the day: “Just shut it. I’m sharing a post about my dog.”

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Who in the F says some shit like “this is part of owning a dog” and the like. This is why I value an animals life over another human. JFC

Unfortunately I’ve had some family members say insensitive things to me after she was hospitalized.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You know, I never even thought about pets getting blood transfusions - which mean there have to be pet who donate blood! Huh. (best wishes)

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

We literally just experienced this with one of our foster dogs and it was the most terrifying thing I have ever experienced!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am so glad your baby is getting better!!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Working in veterinary medicine, this is a pretty common condition we see. Glad she’s feeling better! HGE sucks; we call it “raspberry jam”

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

YES! I had no idea it was so common.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty common to need fluids and meds, but being so severe they need a transfusion is NOT common.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that must be scary. hope everything is ok.

6 years ago | Likes 141 Dislikes 1

Thank you, she’s doing better!

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

good. were the vets able to determine a cause?

6 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

There's pet ownership, then there's being a good pet owner. You're a good pet owner and person, OP

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Sorry for the poopy blood on your pants :(

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you! Those were my good lazy pants too, lol

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Both my dogs came down with the bloody shits last year, though not nearly as bad. Hope yours is okay.

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

My Chihuahua died of something similar. I cried like a baby. Felt so guilty.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I’m so sorry to hear that. Please don’t feel guilty, you did what you could at the time. This thing comes on so quickly.

6 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I work in animal ER we see this a lot, people dont realize how bad it could be,dehydrated real quick & like your baby some need transfusion

6 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I had no idea. I’m lucky a 24-hour vet is only 10 minutes away from me

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Please let me know usual causes and signs!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, they don’t know the cause of it. The normal signs are vomiting and diarrhea, although mine didn’t even have the vomiting.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dog also had regular diarrhea, then bloody next day, but nowhere bad as this. She was still perky, but I'm glad that I decided to take

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

her to the vet right then, it probably saved her life. I had no idea it can get this bad that quickly.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Enough with the bogus morality. Dogs are no more intelligent than cows or pigs. Unless you're a vegan you really have no leg to stand on.

How ridiculously insensitive can people be?! I’m so sorry. No one should speak like that way about a sentient being with feelings :(

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

We once spent $8000 on emergency bowel surgery for our 16-year-old cat. That turned out to be unnecessary.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Not nearly as much, but $800 to get a sewing needle out of my stupid cat’s stomach.

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

My father in laws the type of guy to say that , don't know how many times hes said to kill my cat , oh your moving might not find a place-

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

? just the way it was worded.. Sorry

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've heard a dog owner say that about her own dog - definitely changed my view of her ... some ppl are just sick

6 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

Its really just a joke, but seriously most people cant afford these surgeries and insurance will never cover it

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 5

well, in my situation it wasn't a joke. And who even jokes like that? It's a bit harsh about a pet you care about

6 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Yeah people joke about way worse things all the time, stop pretending.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is she gonna be okay? Scary!

We think so, thank you. She’s staying in the doggie ER another night, we’ll check in with the vet tomorrow.

6 years ago | Likes 225 Dislikes 2

Keep us updated please, hope everything goes well!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Did your vet have the payment plan option? My vet did. Had ol girls knee replaced. No interest just monthly payments and no down payment

6 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

No, we did CareCredit. The first night alone was $5,800. I’m dreading waiting for the estimate for the second night. ?

6 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 1

Yikes, I keep going back and forth about getting pet insurance...hearing crazy bill totals like that should of scared me into it by now

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've had good luck with CareCredit. You likely have 0 interest for 18 months or more.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah but you have to pay it all off within the allotted time otherwise all the interest you wouldve been charged gets tacked on.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Definitely make sure to transfer the balance to another card if you can't pay it off in the allotted time. Goes from zero interest to

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

astronomical interest rate.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Unfortunately, we just moved into a different apartment, so all the extra money we had went towards that.

6 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

Go to a credit union an take out a line of credit to pay the care card. 10% interest is a lot better than 26%.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn that’s a stack of loot

6 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Omg, I’m so sorry...

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey paramedic here. Hydrogen peroxide for the blood. Lifts it right up off of fabrics

6 years ago | Likes 726 Dislikes 0

Deadpool says lemon and seltzer water. Yours sounds better, but now I can’t help but wonder.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I learned this back when I was a cashier, from an elderly lady who was buying a lot of hydrogen peroxide. Very useful info for period-havers

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Castile soap and cold water after a few peroxide rinses.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Was just about to post this. Got the tip from a nurse. Works a treat.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a person with periods, can confirm.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Definitely a serial killer....

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Regular old bar soap works wonders on blood.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is good to know, I accidentally go blood all over my snow pant this weekend and couldnt figure out how to get it out

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And dawn soap combined

6 years ago | Likes 54 Dislikes 0

Dre also works, but for some reason people keep forgetting that.

6 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 2

6 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

I get bad bloody noses in winter and boy does the hydrogen peroxide come in handy. My ex taught me but boy would she get PISSED lmao

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Stay hydrated, homie.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's just the thing a serial killer would claim to be to throw us off their track.

6 years ago | Likes 241 Dislikes 0

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serial killer here impersonating a paramedic is how you end up having to save someone's life instead of take it.. and that's terrible

6 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

I learned this in 11th grade biology class, it's pretty common knowledge

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Right? It would have been simpler to claim to be a woman.

6 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Why would women be experts on knowing how to remov...oh. OH.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serial killer here, can confirm claiming to be female would be easier

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Used to do laundry at a motel, can confirm.

6 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Thats metal af

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The horror. Did some time working in budget extended stay hotel. Full ppe for laundry.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

like as a pretreatment before wash? then regular wash with soap or...? i bleed alot, ok?

6 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Cold water only. Soak the clothes for as long as it takes for the blood to dissolve (days). Change the soak water as needed.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A simple soak in cold water gets out most blood. Source: Paramedic/RN

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

personally I've always found seltzer works really well for blood, if you're looking for things to try out

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Okay, serial killer. I've got an eye on you.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

just one? I've got like nine

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s hard to do, they keep rolling off.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If its dried and a light colored object peroxide, wash it out by hand and then you can machine wash again, if it's dark you'll want

6 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

a less reactive agent as peroxide is a bleaching agent and can bleach your darks.

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

hand washing isnt hard and you dont need any fancy tools. I cut myself a ton too and learned that many dark inks arent protected (we called

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

it shielding in my school training, the ink in carpets for example might not be shielded from harsh cleaning chemicals) the hard way. It

My 9lb doggo had it too! No clue how he got it. We barely got him to the vet where he had to stay for several days. Lost nearly 2lbs! Scary!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You are a good Hooman, all I can give is a +1 and a virtual hug

6 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

I know how it feels, the worries and what ifs, prayer for you and the puppy!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You did a good job, thank you for taking care of her. If you need help with expenses you should open a gofundme. I'd be willing to help.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My dachshund had this same thing earlier this year. It’s terrifying. Sudden and unknown cause. I watch his poops like he shits gold now.

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You better update us when she gets home with tons of pictures with many pets and treats!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well wishes for doggo!

Glad to hear she in on the mend!!!

6 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

This happened with us and our 8yo OES. Super scary, but the vet hospital did a great job and she fully recovered. ❤️?

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My dog had this same thing this year. 3 days over night at the vet but he made it through. We almost lost him :(

6 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 0

Such great news she is recovering! My dog had it & I was fortunate she lived. Many don't. So scary. Thank you for getting the word out <3

So glad shes ok! Also, part kangaroo? I know nothing about dog breeds.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Happy your pupper is ok and doing better:)

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just adopted a couple of months ago and I'm so afraid of something like this. I didn't think I could love a stupid ball of fluff so much.

6 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

So glad yours is doing better and I hope she makes a quick recovery and lives a long and healthy life!

6 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Get insurance now. They won’t cover pre-existing conditions or preventative, but if something happens, you don’t have to worry about $$ too.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Please keep us posted with updates! Hugs to you and Ivy!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serious question, as I had never thought of a dog/animal blood bank for animal blood transfusions. How do they get the blood for them?

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There are donor clinics for dogs to go to. There are certain specifications for age, size and health status to be able to donate

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Greyhounds are common donors.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

A lot of vet offices used to keep a large breed dog on staff as a donor. Our former vet still had a cat for similar purposes in 2017.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It sounds like she ate an onion or a piece of one.

Is pet insurance worth it? I live in Canada.

6 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I pay $90/mo for two dogs. $250 deductible, 90% coverage after the deductible is met, & $15k limit. I don’t want to question taking them in.

6 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you get a good plan then definitely. I’m in the US, but I’d look into Healthy Paws and see if they cover in Canada.

6 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not really. A new pet is much cheaper.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

Nice!

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to think this way. Our last 2 dogs were great dogs, but I didn't bond with them the way I have with this dog. Suddenly the idea of

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

anything bad happening to this one, & having to put him down, hit me real hard. Maybe I'm not the sociopath I thought i was. thatd be nice.

6 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The simple fact is your life will be many times longer than your pet so you're going to have to part with them one way or another.
