Why did the person cross the road?

Here's a fun 4th of July story for you guys. Florida has what's called the move over law. Meaning when you see tow trucks, emergency personnel, or road rangers on the side of the road with lights on, move over if possible or slow down 20 under.

While on a traffic stop on I-75, one of my partners observed a vehicle not move over during my stop. She was pulled over. Not a big deal in itself as far as she's concerned but her passenger was plastered. Beyond a reasonable amount.

I finished my stop and went up to back up my partner. While waiting for him to finish on his computer, the passenger gets out of the car and places his hands in the air (hands up don't shoot garbage. We see this so often, it's lost its meaning). I tell him to get back in his vehicle. He does.... But gets out again and lays down on his stomach. Keep in mind, we are both back by the patrol car. Again, I instruct him back into his vehicle. His girlfriend is yelling at him now too, to stay inside. He gets back in. Until he gets back out again and stands there. He's drunk, so this time I save my breath and let the wrath of his lady in the vehicle tell him what's what. But he decides it's a better idea to walk around the car and into oncoming traffic on I-75.

Remember that move over law I told you about? It's a good thing the semi truck that passed followed the law here. My partner and I had to run out into the road and grab this guy and bring him into a position to restrain him. Florida has a law called the marchman act that allows us to take overly intoxicated person's, drugs, alcohol, etc., Into custody and transport them to a hospital or treatment facility for detox. So that's what we ended up having to do with this guy.

Once in the hospital, he made statements that turned him into a suicide risk and was completely unpleasant the whole time.

Can't make this stuff up guys. Hope y'all enjoy these.

Stay safe.

*Edit*

It has come to my attention that I could have explained myself a little better in a couple places. First, with the hands up don't shoot aspect, most people do not realize that a lot of people we encounter use this as a way to taunt or to provoke hostility. Particularly where no hostility is currently in effect. If my weapon is drawn, which in this case it was not (and had no need to be as we had no contact with the passenger until he decided to throw himself into traffic), and someone places demonstrates the action of surrender, of course that has meaning. But that was not the case here. Let's not misconstrue things.

Further, he was not arrested. The Marchman act is a protective custody act which allows us to transport someone to the hospital or a treatment facility if they are too intoxicated. No charges are placed on the individual for something like this.

Also, I am not patting myself on the back. It's my job to do this. I am simply sharing aspects of that job that the majority of you would not be otherwise privy to. Take from it what you will.

I've always moved over for flashing lights, I'm from Michigan. Are there states that don't require this?

I know it's not a law everywhere but I thought it was understood to move over if someone's on the side of the road

Im glad this turned out well

Oh florida, i hate you~ (but you cops have a lot of florida men/women to deal with, godspeed)

We have a similar law in NY in response to troopers dying in accidents but sometimes they pull people over in congested areas .

My buddy was tripping waaaay too hard in Ft. Lauderdale and when the cops came they drove him to the psych ward and went about their day.1/2

So no charges for walking into traffic on the highway? I don't understand why being under the influence would negate charges for that.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Love the user name, sorry for the simple stop made difficult. But I'm sure his woman gave him an ear full when he sobered up and still does

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Scott's law in Illinois I'm pretty sure

As a fellow Floridian, fuck 75 and the drivers on it. Stay safe out there.

Better 75 than I4, I4 don't give a fuuuuuuudge

Doesn't help with the Volcano Bay monstrosity distracting tourists.

There's also wrecks on I4 every two miles.

"hands up don't shoot garbage. We see this so often, it's lost its meaning" Uh...

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 16

Shoot first handcuff later

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Yeah, it's a protest tactic. It's a taunt more than anything. I see it a lot at the protests near where I live.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hearing a cop say "Hands up don't shoot garbage. We see this so often, it's lost its meaning" is pretty disconcerting.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 20

Hands up don't shoot has lost meaning? It means don't fucking kill people who are unarmed.

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 22

That's not what he meant and you know it, don't be shittty.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Just seems like you shouldn't say something so insensitive in response to a movement against police brutality and murder.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

Hey guys, remember that cop that posted stuff regularly for a while? He has the best way of telling stories... what happened to that guy?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Capt Awesome? I think he got hurt

Glad you stopped someone from dying OP. Good work.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I mean, if they hadn't gotten involved, gf would have taken him home and he'd have passed out there, safe, but sure.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

You never know.

Learned in my police class. Arrested does not mean charged.

Came up on a dark car on the side of I84 here in NY, so naturally, i move over. Turns out it was a NY state police car. Drivers behind 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me didn't look like they moved over, and i was too far ahead to see if they got lighted up. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Typically the move over law isn't going to apply if the lights aren't activated

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe, but it could be a matter of life and death. Imagine if your car broke down, would you want people to move over now or wait for police

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Don't get me wrong I move over when I see a stopped car, I'm just saying that they wouldn't get pulled over for not changing lanes.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Probably saved his life, and the trucker's job. Well done.

8 years ago | Likes 220 Dislikes 1

but he wouldn't be in any danger if they did get pulled over

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 14

Unless he has health insurance he's going to be a couple thousand dollars in debt from that visit, then try to kill himself anyways. America

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

His wife was driving him to the hospital and this slowed down the process.

*soul. you dont recover from splashing a man over half a mile.

Had an oversized load driver tell me he had a lady suicide driving her car head on into his rig. Her husband had cheated and she decided 1/2

That was the end of her life. Even in a big rig, he spent two months in the hospital and he ended up needing therapy. 2/2

You really have no idea how little I care for stupid people, do you?

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

Wouldn't the truck driver have saved his own job in this case because he was moved over?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who knows. That might be considered "helping the police" which can get you fired.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on if they're from an employment-at-will state or not. He could get fired for simply having been the guy to hit Dumbass McFucknut.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Florida is at will

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but because he followed the law and moved over he didn't hit the guy, therefore, he saved his own job by those actions

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Even though the trucker was doing absolutely nothing wrong. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure if we're arguing the same thing here or not. What I'm agreeing with is that OP grabbing the guy saved the trucker's job, 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"It's a good thing the semi truck that passed followed the law here." To me that means the guy walked into the righthand lane
