Colder climate, much more condensed population. Canada is about 4 groups of people (Ontario, Quebec, BC, and First Nations). Contrast to America that has, by my reckoning, 19 groups of people. Also, later start to the whole "nation-state" thing.
The American Revolution. America gained independence via violent warfare; they put clauses into their constitution guaranteeing citizens a right to advanced weaponry; they idolize their founding father and the concept of tyranny itself is a bogeyman in their folklore. By contrast, Canada came about as a result of relatively peaceful diplomacy with England, we’ve never been attacked in a major way, our sovereignty has never been threatened, we’ve never had to pay for our freedom with violence.

Best case scenario there is enough mutual attrition that the right-thinking (as in "correct-thinking") people of the US overwhelm the trash people domestically, take over, and end the war.
Oh of course; I’m not saying Canadians are pacifists. Only that we don’t idolize and glorify violence like Americans do in the folklore of their early history. For Canadians, I would say that violence is more of a regretful duty. Canada is the country that gave us In Flander’s Fields.
Heck, even look at our national anthems - Canada: “We stand a guard for thee”, as opposed to America’s “the rockets’ red glare and the bombs bursting in the air”. Canada’s is about standing guard, being of service, defending ourselves, our country, each other. America’s is almost literally “MURICA! FUCK YEAH!” talking about rockets and bombs and how they light up the flag.
There were several invasions/incursions into the provinces of Quebec and Ontario by Americans during the 18th/19th centuries that seemed very much "in a major way". These were seen by Canadian and British as serious threats to the future of our fledgling country. In the Canadian constitutional documents the words 'Peace, order, and good government" are cornerstones for the development of Canada and influence much of the thinking into what it meant to be Canadian, at the time.

Yeah it seems pretty obvious to me, but I live in London - that person did something to help you, why would you not say thank you? Same for everyone in service jobs: they're helping you, and your day would be impossible without them. I think in America a lot of people for some reason think you don't have to thank people if they're being paid to do something. I find that confusing.
I'm from Brooklyn and take the bus daily. I know my drivers, I always say hello, thank you and tell them to be safe and have a great day when I'm at my stop. They deal with so many a$$holes. They deserve at least that. No one should be treated like trump except trump.
Shit, I'm American and every time I'm on a bus (very rare, only when I'm in major cities like once every few years) I'm vocal and kind to them. same with cashiers, waitstaff, museum and parkstaff, etc.
I used to do this thing where I'd be in the middle of the line of people getting off the bus and I'd say thanks... And then everyone behind me would too. Once one Canadian starts being nice we all gotta do it.
Add France to the list of countries that do that. Almost everyone say "hello" entering the bus, and some variation of "thank you/goodby/have a good day" leaving. At least in my area (not Paris). And, although we're not supposed to, you'll often find people casually chatting with them. I have done that with 2 drivers I know on a line I take regularly. They're humans, not slaves/machines.
I think it’s common in a lot of places to just keep your head down and ignore other people. That being said most of the time I have said thank you to bus drivers when I was using a public transit system. Except in New York city, but only because you have to shuffle off so fucking quickly.
My son calls it, "The Geneva Suggestion." He told me this a few days ago. He's 16. If he's figured it out, you know other countries certainly don't take it seriously.
Check one … sorry ‘bout that. Check two … and this one, too. Check three … yeah no, real sorry ‘bout that one. Check four … we did not mean ta getcha like that, eh. Check five … sorry. To be fair, you did say “give ‘er, bud!” So we did. Check six … buddy, did you think we were joking when we told you not to fuck with Canada gooses?
Pretty sure I remember reading years worth of Americans insisting all the dead kids and etc. were because they needed the guns to fight tyranny. Well, now's your chance to show the world what all those little corpses bought you.
Your point, valid. The tree you’re barking up, wrong. Gotta remember the side you’re talking to. We’ve been trying to get gun laws on the books for years. So calm the fuck down so we can figure this out together.
There's Nazi rallys happening in American towns and a distinct lack of face punching happening. I'd start by figuring that shit out because it's hot the rest of the world pretty damn concerned.
What, you expect the right-wing pro-gun people to do it? Anyway, Trump was democratically elected. You guys voted this into office. We don't have a part to play in the process of removing him.
Please keep in mind you’re lumping us all together. My vote most decidedly did not go to any republican this election. I even voted against our incumbent governor simply because he’s republican despite generally thinking he’s pretty moderate and has done a mostly good job for several election cycles.
I've popped onto reddit a few times, and it hurt my heart to see r/askcanada on the popular section, with posts calling americans a bunch of twats. All americans. No differentiation between drumpf supporters and not.
Right, I mean if our leader started a trade war with America and threatened to take over your country multiple times would you differentiate between supporters of Prime Minister Trudeau and supporters of either the other 2 parties? Do you even know what their names are? No, americans would be mad at all canadians, they would not bother to learn about our politics or differentiate jack shit. When a MAJORITY or voters elect trump, we assume a MAJORITY of americans are racist fascist dipshits.
Nah, fuck that and fuck them. If they elected Trump twice they can always elect someone like him. We will always be 1 bad election away from fearing for our trade security or national security. I say we permanently move away from the Americans as much as possible economically, and beef up militarily so we can help make an invasion more costly.
As much as it hurts me, I do have to account for the fact that my country elected that twat twice. I've gotta add it to the list with the Trail of Tears, Slavery, Jim Crow, Japanese Internment, and Ronald Reagan.
I'm sorry but I've met many Americans and never have I told myself "it would be cool to hang with that person". I find even the more progressive ones have a very individualistic view of life. I have debated here with "progressives claiming they wouldn't want Trump voters to get Universal Healthcare" and to me that is fucked. In Canada everyone gets it, the anti vax, the junkie, the thief, the politician, the overeater. I'll say it, I don't really like Americans, I wish you well but kindly F off
I ‘m one of the progressives and I want everyone to have great health care. And we should have only public healthcare so it will stay well funded. And no private schools so the rich will want to keep public schools well funded too. I want affordable train service all across the nation so no one has to fly if they don’t want or can’t afford to. I want no self driving cars as this is less efficient and worse safety than well trained people driving trams, buses and trains. We need fewer cars.
There are many people where public transportation is widely available that don’t learn to drive. And the cost savings! No insurance, no car loan, no registration fee, no maintenance, no fuel cost.
“The junkie.” I’m not sure you’re as progressive as you think.
More broadly, otherizing 330 million people based on your limited experience, is also not progressive of you. Humans are humans everywhere. Trump supporters are people. Out of the 70 million that voted for him there are thousands that are better people than you or me. That are smarter than you or me. They have been lied to and raised to trust certain sources of information. Sources different than the ones I trust and sources 1/2
that I believe lie, but had I grown up in their environment with their values indoctrinating me, I might believe as they do. Empathy is the only thing that will bridge the gap. 2/2
Who would think that a country's sovereignty would be a trigger for the inhabitants of that country? Fuck you, fuck your president, fuck your entire shithole country
The sitting president just fucking quit and then that party gave no choice to who it ran. But, sure Jan, blame your peers instead of your party. Partisan politics works so well!
Ahh one of the ones that stayed home and allowed orange idiot to win. They did offer an alternative to trump, but some were too racist or too sexist to just listen to each candidate and pick the one that would help turn this country around.
I get it. You, personally didnt vote for that. You are stuck in a system of survival. Cant skip a day to go protest or lose health benefits if you lose your job. Its a system to keep americans in line, passive.
We see either the dumb fucks who voted him in or the passive majority doing jack shit. This is why we angry. We are nice till we are not. We are so puzzled, wondering why the people are not rioting over all the bad going on. Different cultures and education. Its that simple.
1/3 of voters didn’t vote. Basically slightly more than 1/3 got the orange sht stain elected. They have the south so ignorant and uneducated that they can’t reason things out. If we still have our constitution and laws after this, I think voting should be mandatory with a large fine if you don’t and election day should be a no work day for everyone but first responders and health care workers.
Most of the people I know are stuck in the system you describe in your first part. When it comes up, I always ask “at what point do we say fuck it? When do we finally just say ‘go ahead, kill me, it’s better than living like this?’?” Most people here are more afraid of dying than they are of living shitty lives. It is a culture thing, valuing just being alive more than possibly dying to be able to live a life. It’s a fear of “what could happen to me and my family?” A constant “would you rather”
of life and death. “Would you rather be a modern day serf and have siblings, or live in a modern world with dead siblings?” Our culture and thinking is so binary and confined that almost no one will ask “why does it have to be either of those? Why not another option?” Tbf, having depression and really not much left to lose gives me an unfair advantage at being ready to throw everything away for the chance of a better life for someone else.
Another part of the reason that some people aren't doing anything is being completely exhausted by all the bullshit. During Trump's first tenure shitting all over the Constitution, all our laws, and everything the country supposedly stands for, my online friends (most of which are American, though there's some Canadian and Europeans in the mix) was constantly up in arms over his bullshit and discussing things constantly.
It's what they want. Throw everything at the wall, keep everyone distracted, steal everything in the commotion. Just surviving each day feels like an accomplishment, but it's impossible to avoid it. TV & internet keep him playing constantly, the policies affect work/food/travel, and then there's random people screaming about him on the streets and it's just, I'm just trying to commute. We need a critical mass of 3% able to protest for change. But in the meantime, all you can do is slow em down
This time around, everyone's just too exhausted to even bother, especially since we know this term is going to be far worse than the first one. Even in a liberal state, there's just too many loud Magats constantly making everything worse. One of those online friends lives in the same region as me (which is a progressive place overall and we both live in especially progressive parts of that region) and his family went to a restaurant last night and some Trump-supporting dirt for brains
was harassing some people of Mexican descent. Illegals aren't actually especially common in this area so they were likely to have been born and raised here in the US, quite likely in this very region. Not that these idiots actually care about immigrants. Look no further than South African Elon Musk, who they seem to idolize almost as much as they do Trump.
Yeah, they slaughtered us at the Battle of Batoche after a long struggle to not have our land taken over. Canada doesn't give a shit about first nations people.
I feel you're playing fast and loose with the truth. It's hard to say Batoche was a slaughter. Casualties on both sides were not excessive and it wasn't a one sided campaign. The Metis had outfought government forces at Fish Creek just previously and although outgunned and outmanned at Batoche they managed to inflict a higher number of casualties (proportionally). Also, most Metis did not participate in that rebellion and had already secured treaties with Canada by Batoche.
that still happens today. all the time. it's not history at all. go look up starlight tours. cops just driving native people hours and hours away from any city and leaving them on the side of the road in -40c, sometimes without shoes
We can't change what already happened. So it's about we you deal with our history to not repeat it. Like German Vergangenheirsbewältigung* instead of trying to erase it like the US is doing it. (*and still far right is on the rise, at least we have lots of brave people that demonstrate against it!)
You mean the way EVERY country on earth has? (Not that it makes it ok, of course, but are we expecting Canada to be better than every other country on earth?) I would love that, but I can't change the past.
It's very recent history here in Canada and something we need to acknowledge. The systemic racism is still going strong. Apartheid South Africa was modeled off the Canadian system. And there are people alive today that suffered under our residential school system.
This is not history, it's still current here and Canadians need to admit that and stop pretending we as a country are so "good".
It's a fool who would say apartheid was modeled after Canada's indigenous policies. Created as early as the 1870s they were quite radically liberal for their times and subsequent amendments by both the Liberals and Conservatives weren't always terrible. Some of those treaties included indigenous demands for modern education like that offered to non-indigenous kids. Abuses that occurred there should be investigated even today. It's our history, good and bad, warts and all.
I found that article as well as others using the same argument you put forward. While I think I understand their argument I don't believe they are compelling nor convincing. Competing interests of protecting indigenous cultures and their eventual assimilation into mainstream Canadian culture were the intent of successive Cdn govt's. Those were not the intents of apartheid So Africa. Chauvinism and patriarchal condescension perhaps, but not racist ideology. 1/2
2/2. I also would say that those So African officials who visited Canada missed the point of what they were observing and went back home instituting a perversion to the detriment of black South Africans. Much like these "Christians" who use their holy book to forward their agendas in ways that was not the original intent.
No, we were pretty much as shitty as possible to them. We wouldn't try to hide or disguise it, even for laughs. Some people are still incredibly shitty to them, but at least it's not government policy anymore. We've come a long way, but there's still much work to do.
I foster parent, the system is still very shitty from the government on indigenous issues. It's bad enough we thought about quitting but decided that won't do anything to fix it.
Poverty should not be a reason kids are removed... Many times things could have been solved by giving the family a fraction of what I get to look after their kids once they are pulled. Because of the reservation system and the generational trauma inflicted on the native population poverty is a much bigger issue in native populations.
Well for example, if you are native your child with issues has FASD, if you are caucasian that kid would be diagnosed with "Autism". Where I am there are 0 supports for FASD, but lots for autism.
FASD is deemed preventable so the heartless government here does nothing. The kids who have it could not have prevented it however "preventable" the government pretends it is.

Why wouldn't you say thank you to bus drivers? We do that where I live too, a little coastal town in Norway. They certainly deserve thanks.
barefootguru
We say thank you in Aotearoa New Zealand. I like to when travelling overseas too.
MyRespectableAlterEgo
Yeah it seems pretty obvious to me, but I live in London - that person did something to help you, why would you not say thank you? Same for everyone in service jobs: they're helping you, and your day would be impossible without them. I think in America a lot of people for some reason think you don't have to thank people if they're being paid to do something. I find that confusing.
Fentex
Common in many places, do all Canadians lack humility regarding common politeness?
KDeeNZ
New Zealander here - definitely always thank the drive.
Booger1775
I'm from Brooklyn and take the bus daily. I know my drivers, I always say hello, thank you and tell them to be safe and have a great day when I'm at my stop. They deal with so many a$$holes. They deserve at least that. No one should be treated like trump except trump.
Greypuppy
Shit, I'm American and every time I'm on a bus (very rare, only when I'm in major cities like once every few years) I'm vocal and kind to them. same with cashiers, waitstaff, museum and parkstaff, etc.
kathlTvVillain
And I'm sure they appreciate it, without them we'd be lost.
cassie65
we also do this in stoke on trent in England
mabbo
I used to do this thing where I'd be in the middle of the line of people getting off the bus and I'd say thanks... And then everyone behind me would too. Once one Canadian starts being nice we all gotta do it.
kathlTvVillain
Same in Ireland 🇮🇪.
AlexSomething
Add France to the list of countries that do that. Almost everyone say "hello" entering the bus, and some variation of "thank you/goodby/have a good day" leaving. At least in my area (not Paris).
And, although we're not supposed to, you'll often find people casually chatting with them. I have done that with 2 drivers I know on a line I take regularly.
They're humans, not slaves/machines.
ForTheBestReally
I think it’s common in a lot of places to just keep your head down and ignore other people. That being said most of the time I have said thank you to bus drivers when I was using a public transit system. Except in New York city, but only because you have to shuffle off so fucking quickly.
Booger1775
Haha, true but it's also acceptable here to just scream it out from the back. We are a hot mess in a shitty situation. F it all.
Fiss
In Canada, we call the Geneva Conventions "The Checklist". Luckily, nobody's added our geese attack drones into international law....yet.
TH3S33KER
What about your wolf paratroopers?
Gargwill
Pre-fight checklist.
ThrowAwayAcct0000
My son calls it, "The Geneva Suggestion." He told me this a few days ago. He's 16. If he's figured it out, you know other countries certainly don't take it seriously.
blissblush
Check one … sorry ‘bout that.
Check two … and this one, too.
Check three … yeah no, real sorry ‘bout that one.
Check four … we did not mean ta getcha like that, eh.
Check five … sorry. To be fair, you did say “give ‘er, bud!” So we did.
Check six … buddy, did you think we were joking when we told you not to fuck with Canada gooses?

I keep wondering where Canadas world famous snipers are in our (and their) time of need. Help the world, end a fascist.
Hexidimentional
Real talk, they're in ukraine
laserfork
Pretty sure I remember reading years worth of Americans insisting all the dead kids and etc. were because they needed the guns to fight tyranny. Well, now's your chance to show the world what all those little corpses bought you.
Dranton12
Your point, valid. The tree you’re barking up, wrong. Gotta remember the side you’re talking to. We’ve been trying to get gun laws on the books for years. So calm the fuck down so we can figure this out together.
firefighter26
There's Nazi rallys happening in American towns and a distinct lack of face punching happening. I'd start by figuring that shit out because it's hot the rest of the world pretty damn concerned.
laserfork
What, you expect the right-wing pro-gun people to do it? Anyway, Trump was democratically elected. You guys voted this into office. We don't have a part to play in the process of removing him.
Dranton12
Please keep in mind you’re lumping us all together. My vote most decidedly did not go to any republican this election. I even voted against our incumbent governor simply because he’s republican despite generally thinking he’s pretty moderate and has done a mostly good job for several election cycles.
relsky
I've popped onto reddit a few times, and it hurt my heart to see r/askcanada on the popular section, with posts calling americans a bunch of twats. All americans. No differentiation between drumpf supporters and not.
I can't really blame them.
ThrowAwayAcct0000
As an American living in Canada, that's pretty much how I think of most Americans too.
GoSens
You voted for him
relsky
I most certainly did not. That's my point. But I acknowledge that *america* did...
pjm82
Yeah, I'm one of them. Fuck you all. I don't give a shit, our sovereignty isn't a fucking joke
woohoo666999
Now it's mostly Americans posting apologies or making posts that they think will make them feel better
Rhythmaster
Right, I mean if our leader started a trade war with America and threatened to take over your country multiple times would you differentiate between supporters of Prime Minister Trudeau and supporters of either the other 2 parties? Do you even know what their names are? No, americans would be mad at all canadians, they would not bother to learn about our politics or differentiate jack shit. When a MAJORITY or voters elect trump, we assume a MAJORITY of americans are racist fascist dipshits.
neptix
Sorry, but your nation just effectively declared war on us. Get your house in order, and we'll be good again.
relsky
I'm trying... but the billionaires are on the fascists side. It's making things VERY difficult...
Hexidimentional
Speak for yourself buddy, this Canadian doesnt forgive so easily.
ThisNameUnavailable
Nah, fuck that and fuck them. If they elected Trump twice they can always elect someone like him. We will always be 1 bad election away from fearing for our trade security or national security. I say we permanently move away from the Americans as much as possible economically, and beef up militarily so we can help make an invasion more costly.
AgileFox
Sorry
HonestCommentFarmer
As much as it hurts me, I do have to account for the fact that my country elected that twat twice. I've gotta add it to the list with the Trail of Tears, Slavery, Jim Crow, Japanese Internment, and Ronald Reagan.
spookyactionatadistance
I'm sorry but I've met many Americans and never have I told myself "it would be cool to hang with that person". I find even the more progressive ones have a very individualistic view of life. I have debated here with "progressives claiming they wouldn't want Trump voters to get Universal Healthcare" and to me that is fucked. In Canada everyone gets it, the anti vax, the junkie, the thief, the politician, the overeater. I'll say it, I don't really like Americans, I wish you well but kindly F off
migratingotter
I ‘m one of the progressives and I want everyone to have great health care. And we should have only public healthcare so it will stay well funded. And no private schools so the rich will want to keep public schools well funded too. I want affordable train service all across the nation so no one has to fly if they don’t want or can’t afford to. I want no self driving cars as this is less efficient and worse safety than well trained people driving trams, buses and trains. We need fewer cars.
migratingotter
There are many people where public transportation is widely available that don’t learn to drive. And the cost savings! No insurance, no car loan, no registration fee, no maintenance, no fuel cost.
RabidNutria
“The junkie.” I’m not sure you’re as progressive as you think.
More broadly, otherizing 330 million people based on your limited experience, is also not progressive of you. Humans are humans everywhere. Trump supporters are people. Out of the 70 million that voted for him there are thousands that are better people than you or me. That are smarter than you or me. They have been lied to and raised to trust certain sources of information. Sources different than the ones I trust and sources 1/2
spookyactionatadistance
Bold of you to assume the junkie wasn't me. If the hat doesn't git buddy don't wear it
RabidNutria
that I believe lie, but had I grown up in their environment with their values indoctrinating me, I might believe as they do. Empathy is the only thing that will bridge the gap. 2/2
pjm82
Who would think that a country's sovereignty would be a trigger for the inhabitants of that country? Fuck you, fuck your president, fuck your entire shithole country
RilynnRae
The actual majority voted for Trump, so they have a point.
migratingotter
No. 1/3 of registered voters didn’t vote, giving palestine as a reason. Only the majority of the people who voted did vote for orange idiot.
RilynnRae
Fair. But that's their fault. It's not like palestine is gonna be better off under Trump.
Hexidimentional
1 third voted for him, 1 third stayed home and let him win.
EmeRgencyDrD
The sitting president just fucking quit and then that party gave no choice to who it ran. But, sure Jan, blame your peers instead of your party. Partisan politics works so well!
Hexidimentional
Kamala and trump are just so similar, i cant decide! Not my peers, not my party, i voted NDP, because my country doesnt run on the two party system.
migratingotter
Ahh one of the ones that stayed home and allowed orange idiot to win. They did offer an alternative to trump, but some were too racist or too sexist to just listen to each candidate and pick the one that would help turn this country around.
migratingotter
Don’t know why you got downvoted, you put it in a nutshell.
Aveylon
Its that simple.
migratingotter
1/3 of voters didn’t vote. Basically slightly more than 1/3 got the orange sht stain elected. They have the south so ignorant and uneducated that they can’t reason things out. If we still have our constitution and laws after this, I think voting should be mandatory with a large fine if you don’t and election day should be a no work day for everyone but first responders and health care workers.
prosper020
Most of the people I know are stuck in the system you describe in your first part. When it comes up, I always ask “at what point do we say fuck it? When do we finally just say ‘go ahead, kill me, it’s better than living like this?’?” Most people here are more afraid of dying than they are of living shitty lives. It is a culture thing, valuing just being alive more than possibly dying to be able to live a life. It’s a fear of “what could happen to me and my family?” A constant “would you rather”
prosper020
of life and death. “Would you rather be a modern day serf and have siblings, or live in a modern world with dead siblings?” Our culture and thinking is so binary and confined that almost no one will ask “why does it have to be either of those? Why not another option?”
Tbf, having depression and really not much left to lose gives me an unfair advantage at being ready to throw everything away for the chance of a better life for someone else.
Alice3173
Another part of the reason that some people aren't doing anything is being completely exhausted by all the bullshit. During Trump's first tenure shitting all over the Constitution, all our laws, and everything the country supposedly stands for, my online friends (most of which are American, though there's some Canadian and Europeans in the mix) was constantly up in arms over his bullshit and discussing things constantly.
ThrowAwayAcct0000
We get burned out with being angry all the time and having no way to do anything about it.
greentights
It's what they want. Throw everything at the wall, keep everyone distracted, steal everything in the commotion. Just surviving each day feels like an accomplishment, but it's impossible to avoid it. TV & internet keep him playing constantly, the policies affect work/food/travel, and then there's random people screaming about him on the streets and it's just, I'm just trying to commute. We need a critical mass of 3% able to protest for change. But in the meantime, all you can do is slow em down
Alice3173
This time around, everyone's just too exhausted to even bother, especially since we know this term is going to be far worse than the first one. Even in a liberal state, there's just too many loud Magats constantly making everything worse. One of those online friends lives in the same region as me (which is a progressive place overall and we both live in especially progressive parts of that region) and his family went to a restaurant last night and some Trump-supporting dirt for brains
Alice3173
was harassing some people of Mexican descent. Illegals aren't actually especially common in this area so they were likely to have been born and raised here in the US, quite likely in this very region. Not that these idiots actually care about immigrants. Look no further than South African Elon Musk, who they seem to idolize almost as much as they do Trump.

Exactly, we're not all sorrys and sunshine up here.
xeilua
Yeah, they slaughtered us at the Battle of Batoche after a long struggle to not have our land taken over. Canada doesn't give a shit about first nations people.
aviselafin211
I feel you're playing fast and loose with the truth. It's hard to say Batoche was a slaughter. Casualties on both sides were not excessive and it wasn't a one sided campaign. The Metis had outfought government forces at Fish Creek just previously and although outgunned and outmanned at Batoche they managed to inflict a higher number of casualties (proportionally). Also, most Metis did not participate in that rebellion and had already secured treaties with Canada by Batoche.
murderonamonkey
solid point. every country that was colonized back when- was guilty of this particular crime. we are no different.
Magnar1183
Y'all also enjoy clubbing last I heard. Hopefully not anymore.😜😜

Yh no. Canada is america light. What do I mean? Self aggrandising nationalistic rhetoric. You're literally acting american af with this whole post.

As a fellow Canadian.... It's not "back when" it's very recent and the systemic racism is still going very strong. Don't pretend we don't suck.
spiritussancto
that still happens today. all the time. it's not history at all. go look up starlight tours. cops just driving native people hours and hours away from any city and leaving them on the side of the road in -40c, sometimes without shoes
SavageDrums

We can't change what already happened. So it's about we you deal with our history to not repeat it. Like German Vergangenheirsbewältigung* instead of trying to erase it like the US is doing it. (*and still far right is on the rise, at least we have lots of brave people that demonstrate against it!)
vicmango201410
As long as there is a Canada (or America)this sin will always be with you. And will never be forgotten.

Yup, the crime spree is ongoing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highway_of_Tears
ThrowAwayAcct0000
You mean the way EVERY country on earth has? (Not that it makes it ok, of course, but are we expecting Canada to be better than every other country on earth?) I would love that, but I can't change the past.
TacoPoweredHelicopter
It's very recent history here in Canada and something we need to acknowledge. The systemic racism is still going strong. Apartheid South Africa was modeled off the Canadian system. And there are people alive today that suffered under our residential school system.
This is not history, it's still current here and Canadians need to admit that and stop pretending we as a country are so "good".
ThrowAwayAcct0000
I don't know of anyone who is pretending we as a country are so "good." That might be a US thing on HOW they think of Canada.
aviselafin211
It's a fool who would say apartheid was modeled after Canada's indigenous policies. Created as early as the 1870s they were quite radically liberal for their times and subsequent amendments by both the Liberals and Conservatives weren't always terrible. Some of those treaties included indigenous demands for modern education like that offered to non-indigenous kids. Abuses that occurred there should be investigated even today. It's our history, good and bad, warts and all.

https://www.thespec.com/opinion/contributors/reflections-on-racism-and-canada-s-dark-history/article_1caa0244-cfdf-51a8-acbf-31bee31e1990.html
First hit on Google, but there are tons more sources for "fools" to look up, if they so choose.
aviselafin211
I found that article as well as others using the same argument you put forward. While I think I understand their argument I don't believe they are compelling nor convincing. Competing interests of protecting indigenous cultures and their eventual assimilation into mainstream Canadian culture were the intent of successive Cdn govt's. Those were not the intents of apartheid So Africa. Chauvinism and patriarchal condescension perhaps, but not racist ideology. 1/2
aviselafin211
2/2. I also would say that those So African officials who visited Canada missed the point of what they were observing and went back home instituting a perversion to the detriment of black South Africans. Much like these "Christians" who use their holy book to forward their agendas in ways that was not the original intent.
reverendbonobo
Yes, but they politely murdered those people.
AReallySatisfyingPoo
No, we were pretty much as shitty as possible to them. We wouldn't try to hide or disguise it, even for laughs.
Some people are still incredibly shitty to them, but at least it's not government policy anymore. We've come a long way, but there's still much work to do.
TacoPoweredHelicopter
I foster parent, the system is still very shitty from the government on indigenous issues. It's bad enough we thought about quitting but decided that won't do anything to fix it.
AReallySatisfyingPoo
I would like to know more, if you're willing to elaborate about your experience
TacoPoweredHelicopter
Poverty should not be a reason kids are removed... Many times things could have been solved by giving the family a fraction of what I get to look after their kids once they are pulled. Because of the reservation system and the generational trauma inflicted on the native population poverty is a much bigger issue in native populations.
TacoPoweredHelicopter
Well for example, if you are native your child with issues has FASD, if you are caucasian that kid would be diagnosed with "Autism". Where I am there are 0 supports for FASD, but lots for autism.
FASD is deemed preventable so the heartless government here does nothing. The kids who have it could not have prevented it however "preventable" the government pretends it is.
reverendbonobo
Wait, did you think I was serious?
TacoPoweredHelicopter
No but it's a shitty joke.
SMB42
No, but some things are difficult to make jokes about. Just didn't land, that's the gamble
