This is the victim of my story

This is just another abandoned sailboat, yesterday I read in my local newspaper that it had sunk while moored. (This is the only picture not taken by me, stole it from the news article)

My first encounter

After work I drove straight to where Barbro supposedly sank, turns out it was just 343,5 meters from my front door (measured with google maps). The scubadiver in me instantly became curious so i started to plan a dive there the follwing morning before work.

The diving commences

This was when I first learned learned the name of the boat "Barbro", based on the name i think this could be the perfect boat for me if we had met under different circumstances.

Barbro seen from the front

Yes you see correctly, that is ice at the surface. I live in Norway, cold as hell here, but that don't stop me from diving all year round. Usually better visibility in the winter where i live anyway.

The aft of Barbro

In the background you can see the pier Barbro was moored to, only two thin ropes was keeping it away from sinking into the depths. Barbro rested on 3-4 meters. The bottom was around 14 meters.

C AW693

This was Barbro's designated number in the ship registry

A note from the Police

Roughly translated: You have misused a property belonging to the municipal of Asker. If this boat is not moved within 14 days, it will be considered lost & found.

Asker and Bærum police district
Sandvika 27.11.2015.

Meaning the police intended to remove it on behalf of the municipal. Aparently Barbro together with another unamed boat was abandoned there last summer.

The engine

According to the news article there was only a small amounts of fuel leaking when the boat sank two days ago. But still when i dived there was still a little bit leaking out every now and then.

The anchor

Stupid anchor, you're not supposed to take the boat down with you...

Into the unknown

As i looked upon Barbro i thought that i might find some treasure, or at least som cool stuff inside so i decided to take a peek.

Playing cards

Found cards all over the place, under the floorbords, up in the roof, in drawers etc.

Thermometer

As i already stated i live in Norway and it was ice on the surface, found this thermometer floating in the room. It was a cool 2 degrees celcius. That ain't to bad when i dive with a drysuit, but still... fucking cold!

I heard Imgur likes knives?

Nothing fancy. But hey, what can a diver do?

View from the inside

And look what's that? Another knife! U guys love that ( or atleast used to) and over the knife? A fire extinguisher????? What fun can i do with that???????????

Let's try it out!!!!

In hindsight, using a fire extinguisher inside a wreck, underwater is probably not one of my best ideas... After this I decided it was enough action for one day and ended the dive.

Sauce for those interested, includes two more bursts from the extinguisher, and my exit from the wreck. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vib6B7nmNMI&feature=youtu.be

Post Dive

When i surfaced i was met by two things, one: a guy from Asker municipal asking if i had been hired to help remove the wreck, and two: this big ass boat heading my way. Presumably to salvage poor Barbro.

Getting paid!

From here on out a lot of text, sorry for that. Didn't use my camera during this.

After i escaped the boat i started to talk with the guy from the municipal, and the two guys that came to salvage Barbro. We all agreed that is was a shame that a beautifull boat as Barbro had been abandoned. But the guy from the municipal said he actually was happy Barbro had sunk, because then it posed a threat to the enviroment (leaking fuel) so they finally had the legal room to remove it.

After a little bit of talk the guy from the municipal said to the salvage guys that if they needed I could help them (without asking me first, so i was basicaly conscripted). When they asked me i said yes, just because I had some extra time before i had to go to work, so I took another dive to secure some straps around Barbro for them. Then after some more talk, the guy from the municipal agreed to pay me 1500 kr (roughly 170 U.S. dollars), for just 10-15 minutes of work, easiest money i ever made!

This operation took place less than 48 hours after the boat first had sunk, so I am probaly the only person ever who got a chance to dive this wreck, which i think is pretty cool.

This picture is the last i have of the operation, I had to leave so I wouldn't be late for work.

Pickles

Gecko tax? This is my toy gecko, his name is pickles and he is my guardian angel. Also note the air temperature -5 degrees celcius, not too cold, but cold enough when you exit the water after a dive.

Barbro's future

This is actually a late addition to the album. I was mostly finished with it and intended to post when i got home from work, but i decided to stop by where Barbro sank. To my surprise both barbro and another unnamed boat was still there, but now on dry land. When i talked with the guy from the municipal he told me that they intended to store Barbro and the other boat to a recycling facility until spring, and if neither the origanal owners or anyone else claims/wants one or both of them they will then be destroyed.

If i had more time, or didn't already own a sailboat i might have claimed Barbro for my own.

As it is i will be content with knowing i was most likely the only one, the first and the last person to dive the wreck of the proud vessel "Barbro"

I hoped you enjoyed my story, despite the bad english and probably a lot of typos.

I'm just glad you didn't find an unopened safe in the boat.

I wish I had enough money to just abandon sailboats. Also, underwater pictures always trigger discomfort for me. I could never be a diver.

I'm shivering just reading this...

This man goes scuba diving, in freezing water before work and I struggle to sit on the cold toilet seat

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

if that thing goes to the scrap yard, see how much they want for it before they take it apart.. i might have a friend interested. seriously

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Take the name plate and put it on your boat to always have Barbro

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm so doing that!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice pics. Water looks pretty clear for a marina. I'm surprised things weren't more unsettled inside.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Anyone want to be my bar bro?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Underwater ships scare the absolute fuck out of me. But +1, very interesting.

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Amazing but yes underwater ships are an absolute nightmare T_T

Stakkars Barbro..

Could Norway take over my Canadian Island please? Boats left derelict here just stay where they are forever. No removal.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

@OP You should try to get in touch with that salvager and see if he needs a diver to help out. You might get a great paying job outta this.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This was both neat and a refreshing change from the usual sob story found in story time. Nice job.

Hear, hear - thoroughly enjoyed this. +1s all around!

This is so awesome and your English is great! Keep posting stuff like this, I love it!

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's nice how non-native speakers can come off sounding so classy because they actually seem to care if they get stuff right or not.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Dry suit diving, don't give a fuck, ice on top of the water. You're the fucking MAN. Oh I'm bored let's blow off a fire extinguisher. Damn.

10 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

I'm a little turned on, tbh.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Today I learned what happens when you use a fire extinguisher underwater. And for that alone I thank you OP.

10 years ago | Likes 147 Dislikes 1

My question is. Did he got the fire out?

10 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

No he got the boat out.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ah Norway, great, beautiful and wee bit expensive country. I remember paying ~42€ (45$) for ONE vegetarian pizza and two small cokes in Bodø

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Holy fuck... Well yeah, they charge 50€ for crossing a bridge on highway...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why would someone abandon a boat? It obviously has value. Why would they not sell it?

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

Sometimes the cost to repair it is more than it's worth, or maybe the owner died and had no heir.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Probably for much the same reasons as people will abandon cars. Only boats take more time and effort than cars. And a whole lot more money.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But what was in the safe?

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Only someone drawn like those french girls and old money.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Ayyyy!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

NO. NOT THIS AGAIN.

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Why would setting off a fire extinguisher underwater be dangerous?

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

If he did anything that could have disturbed the ropes and the boat broke free to sink to the bottom. That would be bad for him.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Enclosed space + lack of vision underwater is not a good combination

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

In an older or bigger wreck it could be very dangerous with things breaking or getting lost or snagged on something.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If it is set for destruction can you buy it and restore it plzz then make another album

10 years ago | Likes 229 Dislikes 2

Yes, just buy and restore an entire boat. Use change from your couch cushions and the time you have on weekends before bed.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I'm certified, but still have not been wreck diving. It's certainly on my bucket list!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I would love to have a boat like that. And restore it. But I'm way too far away. Closest body of water to me is lake michigan

I really wish i had the time or could afford it

10 years ago | Likes 115 Dislikes 0

Kickstarter that shit, yo

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, that's a seriously expensive, difficult, time consuming task. Boats that float are expensive. There's a reason this was abandoned....

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Slightly off topic & I apologize for that & if this was already answered, but what originally caused it to sink?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It snowed alot last weekend. The weight of pushed the boat deeper, so that water started seeping through the wood where it wasnt saturated

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This kind of random shit is perfect for a gofundme. Create a community of BarBros. Restore it and sail the ocean blue or something.

10 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

What's your job that you can go diving before work and own a sailboat, despite not being able to afford a second one?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I work as a high voltage operator for the government, controlling power to trains. I use most of my extra money on diving.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For example: the photo equipment i used for this post cost close to 5000 U.S dollars...

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Quite interesting, thank you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You should offer them 1500 kr (roughly 170 U.S. dollars) for it.

10 years ago | Likes 98 Dislikes 0

Thank you for making people stare at me in work for laughing out loud. Take my +1

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is. Is that a reference? Because I think i get it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haha, i think i could get it for free. But it's the restoration that costs.

10 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 0

Set your budget at 1500 kr (roughly 170 U.S. dollars).

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Nothing a little duct tape won't fix.

10 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

Dude. Imgur party boat. I bet the community would be down to help.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

do you dive as an occupation?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Kind of, i have a full time job in the government. But i work as a dive instructor on weekends and evenings. Plus some small jobs like this.
