Someone requested a post about how it is to ride a motorcycle, and I took that as an excuse to start this post.

Motorcycling is great, because you feel connected with everything, you are not just seated on top of a 2 wheeled engine, your whole body (position, weight, movements) will influence what the bike does, in return, your whole senses will feel the road, the scenery, the wind, the sun, the slopes ..

there is nothing like it.

Sometimes you are on a nice road, you dont know whats behind the next turn, and you are simply excited about it :)

I cant find it on youtube, watch the scene in House MD when he test ride a bikes, thats exactly how it feels

The wave is what makes riding a community. Pass another biker, and you two will usually exchange a hand wave. Unless someone is really busy with his hands and simply gives a head nod. It ok too.

What does it means ? It's like "Hey, having lotta fun, you?" "Yeah me too buddy !!"

We all like to think we are good on a motorbike. Truth is, we regularly drop our bikes during stops (or parking), and there is always someone who can ride faster than you. So stay humble and learn to respect the bike.

Edit : Due to many comments from fellow motorcyclist, yeah maybe you didnt dropped your bike, like ever, maaaybe, Also a bit of self mockery never hurts.

There is a lot of different 2 wheelers, the more commonly seen on road, are the roadsters, simple, efficient and practicals. But there are a lot of different way to ride.

Sportbikes and supermoto are racing oriented, the first are for fast curves, the second for extremely sharp corners.

more about it

still want more ? oh boy, you got trapped, see you on the road buddy.

Every. single. time.

btw, that's me bike : http://imgur.com/gallery/x4Uxa

Truth be talled, each one of us is a bit of everyone of those.

Security time ! riding is dangerous, accidents WILL happen and you would be more exposed than in a car. Always wear your gear. Reinforced jeans, formal looking shoes and jacket exist. You dont have to look like a power ranger.

Knee dragging is the holy grall of road motorcyclist. It mean you lean low enough to drag a piece of plastic (a slider) attached to your pants. Now doing this on a road is dangerous and most of the time stupid. Roads are simply not adapted (grip, curve angle, traffic, bumps ..) for that kind of riding.

Go to the closest track, and discover riding fast, its hella different, and you'll learn a lot.
And when you finally learn to knee drag, you realize its only the first step to riding fast and you are actually still slow as a donkey.
Also, thats me on the pic, yay.

Well, some of us die on motorcycles. Still, we are all gonna die at some point, there's not escape for this. If you drive responsibly, listen to your sensations instead of trying to push too far the limit, you'll live long enough. The greatest danger is to have the time of your life and never want to quit.

Riding in the rain ! Its hard, everything is slippery, cant brake a lot, visibility is reduced, its cold and you usually end up complety soaked not matter the gear.

But it forces you to listen to the bike reactions, and its a good exercise and helps practicing smooth riding.
Smooth riding is the key to being safer and faster. Dont be a dry only rider, ride in the rain once in a while

Some of us ride every single day, no matter the conditions, I admire them. Crazy bastards.

nuff said.

ride safe and enjoy

most pics are not mine. But this my cat : http://imgur.com/gallery/PIUWz

Obligatory Edit : wow front page !!!! love you all ! Send naked bikes !

Harley guys don't usually wave at me on my honda. I give them a big open palm wave. They hate it.

It should also be mentioned that if you see a rider coming from the opposite direction tap the top of their helmet, you should slow down.

They are giving you a friendly heads up.

I think each of those upvotes are a clutch hand wave back

Love it, shiny side up!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Been waiting for it to warm up enough to ride. About ~2 weeks away. This post got me wayyyy too excited.

On a motorcycle, everywhere you go is an adventure, everything you do is an endeavor.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Rode everyday for 3 years rain or shine. Loved it.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yaaaaay I'm a crazy bastard

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I was too, until some douchebag crashed into me when she wasn't looking. I hated riding in the freezing cold, but never minded rain much.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it gets old pretty quick during cold spells. And Bridgestone BT45's are shite in snow

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same here. Proper gear, proper roads and heated grips allow me to ride always, unless there's ice or snow (although I did the latter).

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You must also ride a BMW. Those heated grips are a life saver.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope, add-on I bartered to get with the GSX-F I got as an occasion. Got it on my previous bike as well. They're heaven.

Good write up @op. You forgot to mention dank whoolies though, gets all the ladies.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and i do ride everyday, no matter what

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

11 years of riding. Fell twice. Ride everyday, dry or not. I love it and feel miserable if I can't ride for any reason.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Riding is my therapy

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Daily rider for 4 years now, best decision I've made. At 19 it was the cheapest way to get around and it's been my only vehicle since!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only? Really? Wow- that's dedication. I've been riding three decades, but having family & responsibilities changes life. Enjoy, itsatsu????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great post. I recommend reading "twist of the wrist" Saved my ass few times.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I recently had an accident on my bike, thanks for this post, it made me feel a lot better.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Get well soon. I broke my collarbone highsiding. The pain, no bike, only one functionnal arm for month, it sucks. But empowering in the end

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Currently stuck at home with a fractured spine because some idiot cut me off. I'll be laid up for 3 months but can't wait to get back to it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's the spirit bro.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We'll be happy to have you back !

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure if that was an intentional "back" pun or not! ;D Either way though, appreciate the support and the post! :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I can't see this posted already; dress for the slide, not for the ride. Stay safe.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Related tip; assume everyone else is trying to kill you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I currently own 3 bikes (naked, touring and a power scooter) and ride almost daily here in Southern California. I absolutely love it!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You Southern Californians are so blessed. I'm so jealous.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I only ride 9 months out of the year here in upper Wisconsin. But when I ride, there's less traffic, so I'm calling it a draw. Enjoy, JaL3!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Riding around Ireland is probably the best experience I'll ever have in life.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Norway isn't bad either :-)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looking to get a used Honda Shadow 2007. Looking forward to my new experience as a motorcyclist.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

My first bike was (still ride it) a Honda CBR500R. Absolutely love it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm looking at getting it literally tomorrow~

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

fellow rider friend rides a shadow as his starter. He loves it. not my kind of bike, but I hope you love it just as much as he does.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have a '15 shadow phantom great bike.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love to ride because you have to live in the moment. Nothing else matters right there and right then. Ride safe all

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Came for the post. Upvoting for the zen. See you out there, DarkStranger????

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I sure hope so

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a biker: Awesome post... dam i need to get my ass back on the bike

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

YES YOU DO!!! Let's go ride!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's a good idea to have your tools wherever you go and know a few things about your bike. Just basic knowledge can save you 50 bucks.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Upvoting for the practical common sense comment. Wether it's an airhead or a K1300GT, I always carry tools. Good call, Kamnum.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks fford. What motorcycle do you drive?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on the day- either the '74 BMW airhead, or the '09 K1300GT. Usually the 1300 because I commute to work. Love me some BMW...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Recently laid my down due to sudden rain as i was stopping. Broke my leg, but when i am healed i will come back here and then get on again

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Getting back on your wheels is one of the more empowering thing a rider can do. I hope you get well soon

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thanks! It is just annoying at this point, but it is letting me start a new diet which is great.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Riding is the best because none of your problems in life matter at all while your riding. Only you and the road

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If youre where im from your wallet will remind you not to drive too much because gas and diesel are both expensive in relation to m/payments

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll take sailing. Less likely to die and no almost no gas usage. Plus you get to have a drink legally.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The risk is part of the fun. But we all need different things to go on. Sail On bud !

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Motorcycling is one of the best experiences you can have.

9 years ago | Likes 129 Dislikes 2

Especially on nice spring days. We have long roads that have little traffic on the way to Yosemite that are great to ride your bike on.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Upvoting for Hando stating the simple truth.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

upvoting for stating the statement

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not a rode biker, but a dirt biker (savage). Started last year and can honestly say it is unreal. Nothing like raw adrenaline.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I stopped about ten years ago but wish I wouldn't have.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's what I hear a lot. Get a trail bike and do some hare scrambles

I am angry I could'nt phrase it so well

I started a few years ago and completely agree. One of the best things i ever did. Also managed to get a dream bike.

Ducati 999s. I never thought I'd be able to own something like that.

Noice

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

http://imgur.com/99q4ynh my newest ride :D All-weather, all-year rider here. It's not as hard as it seems, though it's a little miserable

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice ride ! my old sv used to be my only mean of transportation. I agree that its not so hard, but arriving totally soaked kinda sucks

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Cheers :) Until last month I rode a Deauville. Not terribly interesting, but fantastic weather protection and comfort!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

in heavy rain

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Beautiful sled, Tharrick! Consider a K1300GT- I arrive almost completely dry, due to the larger fairing & windscreen. +1 for the bags, BTW

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had a go on an R1150RT when I was looking to replace the Deauville, and thought it was a bit big to be honest - I was mostly looking for

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a commuter machine to take me the 5 miles to and from work, but something that would also be comfortable for the occasional 100-mile trip

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The f800st seemed like a good compromise, plus it's a lot more fun :) I do notice that MCN seem to love the K1300GT, and were I earning

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

enough to be able to have a second bike purely for long tours, I'd probably be looking at something like that for holidays :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shout out to the Harley riders and sport bike riders that wave to each other

9 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 1

I dont understand why Harley riders don't return the nod / wave. I wave at most every bike or scooter even cyclists that aren't being dicks.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shout out to all the real riders who wave back at me as I putter past on my Honda Metropolitan.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

98% of riders in the pnw wave back

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yep, you gotta be hard to ride there a lot so respect gets spread. Now I wave everybody on 2 in AZ, usually get one back.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a new harley ride and I wave every single bike. Idc what you ride as long as you have two wheels. And I'm some cases 3.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just today I rode my Suzuki and husband his Yamaha and our two friends rode Harley's. We don't care

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I ride a Buell, and it's always cool when the Harley guys stop to admire it. I wave at everybody on 2 wheels, it's the riding spirit

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I may be part of a rare breed indeed - I have both a Harley and a sport bike. Plus I'll wave to anybody... unless they're on a scooter

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I'll actually wave to scooters just because of how giddy they get and wave back so enthusiastically.. we're all on 2 wheelers :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just like when a kid in a dogged rusty car waves and the guy in the Chevelle waves back.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That made me feel warm in my feelings. Very true. You sound like an excellent person :D

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I ride a Harley-like Kawasaki and some sport bike riders look surprised that I waved at them. It's not what you ride, it's THAT you ride.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

exactly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

To the VERY FEW Harley riders that wave back to me and my dual sport. Too many newer Harley riders seem to feel too self important.

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Depends on area. 99% of them around here wave no matter what and I'm on my Suzuki

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A scary amount of them never use gear either. Older riders usually wave back to me though.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

They just fear that they might lose their handlebar due to the vibrations if they let go

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Meh, don't look for validation in others.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, they're just more likely new to the sport and don't know. Midlife crisis first bike is almost always a Harley.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

And they don't have the nerve to remove clutch hand to wave! I'm Suzuki btw
