The MOVIE was the "fascist nightmare" which must be what they were referring to. The book presented human society as ideal.

Everything by River Heinlein is a focus on communism and how it is good. Also polygamy and pansexualism.
Susurus
The movie is a great film, but the book delves so deep into the subject it's like the book was a critique of the film rather than vice versa
AGorgonMadeMyPenisHard
Opportunity to become a us citizen based on our crazy, fucked up immigration laws. 2/2
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
See: Guam
kamesha
People born in Guam are US citizens - you don't have to do service duty
brownribbon
It’s a good program. The French have done it for decades.
IssacCox
You think it's hard to immigrate to the U.S.? Look at canada's immigration laws. Actually look at most western immigration law.
sexytangerine
It's interesting because the Army wouldnt take me cuz I didnt have any papers. So idk if I didnt go to the right recruiter or what...
dohcohv
It's still easier to immigrate to the US than a lot of other countries, even Canada.
ekzeko
I mean, I am personally for rather tight immigration laws. But that's a very reasonable way to channel an applicant. Why do they get deprtd?
xBoneDaddy
I share this exact sentiment and question.
AGorgonMadeMyPenisHard
This is just personal experience from the guys around me, but last few years the process has been getting a lot harder.
RealRaceRiotsAreAboutGettingBlueshelledInMarioKart
Buddy of mine was discharged with a purple heart agree getting blown up in an ied. Oops, didn't serve your full tour, fuck off...
Outlavv
Because america as a nation is immoral and corrupt and has no honor or loyalty to anything but the dollar bill
TurtleVest
Can confirm, In my unit we had a guy from Puerto Rico, Pakistan, and the Phillipines.
ekzeko
You're saying people from puerto rico aren't citizen's either? Jeesh
AnonOmis1000
Puerto Rico is a US territory, unless reality suddenly shifted on me.
FullMetalloidAlchemist
Expedited citizenship process if you're in the service. If have 2 soldiers in my unit that just earned their citizenship this way.
WeCanDoBetter9
I thank you all for your service.
cepacolusmaximus
Then how are veterans getting deported?
somnif
For example, getting a medical discharge (such that you don't finish your full term length) suddenly ends that process.
freshthrowaway1138
Because the system was designed to be difficult.
RawSuger
the same boots = military? to what extent does US aspire to emulate the roman empire?
FourLegsGood
Right down to the collapsing economy.
cm77
It's really looking like 475AD at the moment.
thestudyofwambology
All the way. Our leaders like to sleep with underage boys too.
JacksNaggingProcrastination
We only have a case for the current one... not the others as far as I am aware
realusernotabot
Yes
Tobecontinued1992
Didnt the romans wear sandals?
fdoyl001
The roman empire did not offer citizenship for service. In fact, you originally had to be a landowner, so fairly well off.
stankginchfurbuger
That was republic days. By later empire, it could be done but you had to enter service with your whole unit AND impress enough to be gain
LizardEnterprises
Well, our president has immunity for his crimes while in office, literally the same as Consuls having Imperium. So... quite a bit?
RedneckFrank
Yeah it's about military service.
NowDoThatVoodooThatYouDo
The chubbies the Founders sported for the Romans would have coincidentally made them quite popular in Ancient Rome
spinsymmetry
Its really common to offer citizenship in exchange for service. FFL is the most famous but UK, Australia, Canada, and more also do it.
secretdpp
You also need to be about 8tons of insane in a 1lb sack for the FFL.
Bananasareagovconspiracy
We’re working pretty hard on the fall part.
HappyEngineer
lemmerustlethosejimmies
I don't see why this can't be ONE path to citizenship. Like if you're willing to fight for a country, you should be able to become a citizen
Notme68
You're >supposedu to be fast tracked to naturalization.
RawSuger
the issue for the roman empire was they ended up using mostly foreigners for their armies. turns out thats a kinda risky move
LoudAngryJerk
IIRC this is from an episode about how America deports combat vets because they were immigrants when they signed up for the military.
AThreeFootTallChocolateMooseWithFudgeEyes
you already have the lead, the dictator, the war-obsessed imperialist mentality... the "slaves"
MrTay
About 100% our government was structured from it. Our union of states model our citizen model. They’ve expanded but it’s the inspiration.
nonCanadianGoose
It’s also a blue collar work term.
nopost
Military service as a path to citizenship has existed for a while (in theory). And the US has always fancied itself the New Roman Empire
themusicguy12
All Trump has to do is learn the violin and we’re golden.
HumanBlooper
"service guarantees citizenship" - would you like to know more?
ThePunisherJB3
That's just Europe really. Almost every kingdom fancied themselves new Rome.
konelhft
And then there's the Holy Roman Empire which wasn't Holy, wasn't Roman, and wasn't an Empire.
AgentPothead
SERVICE GUARANTEES CITIZENSHIP. WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW MORE?
Rovylern
Treblaine
I think you will find the problem is that it doesn't guarantee citizenship.
Treblaine
The subtext everyone missed in Starship Troopers is military service was one of only a few ways to become a "citizen".
AgentPothead
Sorry it's a Starship Troopers reference. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMTz9nIUkGc
Treblaine
People misunderstand that movie so much, the problem isn't veterans granted citizenship it's about ONLY veterans being citizens.
AgentPothead
What are you on about? Literally nobody said that, but you. Have you even read the book the movie is based on?
ServantOfTheGodEmperorOfUsersub
It depends what n the year. For an example, Roman movements were quite popular in the southwest in the 2270s and 2280s
XVUltima
Popular until the mailman rolled into camp with a Big Iron on his hip.
Dimestream
Degenerates like you belong on a cross.
Dionysus187
Oh man wait until the year 40,000, really Roman it up then.

I respected Ceasar's ideals. He knew the world was trying to rebuild the same way that led to the apocalypse. He wanted to purge any of the

old ideas, especially the NCR that was modeled directly on the old U.S. His faction was the LEGION, not the EMPIRE.
