Delivering on a holiday promise, here goes!

So you've got your Skyrim modded all to hell, right? That's my first thought when I return to Skyrim. Grab those unofficial patches, texture mods, player model, hair, flora, lighting, weather, creature and monster overhauls, gameplay and skill tree overhauls, weapons, armors, quest changes, immersion mods like populated cities and roads and forts and civil war and... oops.

You see this.

If you're lucky. Very lucky. Sometimes all you get is your desktop and, on repeat occurrences, a realization that you may have to backtrack and uninstall everything to start over. Not fun.

Holy mod list Batman!

Even if you're on top of your game, or you've been modding since the old days, or you've read someone's modding guide and followed it step by step, you can have issues. A perfectly tuned load order? A bashed patch to end all bashed patches? A Skyproc'd patch to make your ancestors proud? None of that is going to save you when the Creation Engine rears its ugly head and torches your game in a rush of flame.

And it'll do that a lot.

However, dealing with dragons in-game and dealing with the beast that is Skyrim's engine can both be trivial with the right precautions, and tools to assist.

You've got this, right?

Most people have SKSE. If you don't, for whatever reason (you sure you're in the right place?), you can grab the latest version here:

http://skse.silverlock.org/
Grab the installer link. There's a 7zip link as well, but I only recommend that if the installer absolutely does not work for you.

Now go get the ENB.

http://enbdev.com/download_mod_tesskyrim.htm
Grab the highest number on the list, that'll be all you need.

A lot of people have this, or at the very least know what it does. This is the beast that bogs down your computer with all sorts of fancy effects that make things look really pretty but run really slow.

Or, you can shut all that off, and it actually INCREASES your performance.

Yeah. That's the reaction I've gotten from quite a few people. They didn't realize that just because you have ENB installed, it doesn't mean it needs to run with a special graphical package.

If you have the steam version of Skyrim, you'll want to go into the Wrapper folder in that zip you just grabbed. From there, take:
d3d9.dll
enbhost.exe
enblocal.ini
enbseries.ini
And extract those to your Skyrim folder. The one with TESV.exe in it.

Now open "enblocal.ini" in your favorite text editor (probably Notepad by default), and take a quick look.

See the [Global] section? Change it. It should be...
UsePatchSpeedhackWithoutGraphics=true
UseDefferedRendering=false

Now keep in mind that if you ever want to use a fancy ENB in the future these two will likely need to be inverted again, as well as grabbing at least one additional file from the zip known as enbeffect.fx. It also means that ENB's special blocky shadows fix will be disabled, but we're not worrying about that right now. There's a lot of small tweaks you can do with ENB, but we'll just stick to the basics.

If you're curious, check this out and save it for later: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50214/

CONGRATS! First step complete!

Still listening, kiddos?

Good! Now we get to the SKSE stuff. You installed it earlier, right? If not, do that now. I'll wait.

Got it? Ok, now, first step.

Go to Skyrim/Data/SKSE

SKSE folder doesn't exist? Make it. Oh, and make a Plugins folder inside of that as well, you'll want it in a few minutes.

Inside the SKSE folder should be a file named "skse.ini". There isn't one? Make it too. You can do so by opening notepad really quick, then saving a file to the SKSE folder as "skse.ini". Then you can edit it from there, or open it up in your favorite text editor, and make it look like this.

http://pastebin.com/EMwUmXkC
I'd drop it here, but Imgur doesn't like random code in the description boxes and kept cutting stuff off. Go figure.

This is stuff everyone should be doing whether they mod heavily or not, due to how it effects Skyrim's base stability.

STEP TWO COMPLETE!

Now we start getting into the dirty stuff.

Time to show the Creation Engine who's boss, and turn on SKSE's powerhouse mode. Don't let comments on the mods themselves fool you, while some people will claim so-and-so is outdated, I 99% of the time end up with problems when I remove them, even after starting a new game.

Go get these:

-=(( IMPORTANT ))=-
SafetyLoad - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/46465/
Prevents the infamous "Infinite Load Screen". Now, if something's beyond its ability to correct, it'll close Skyrim to desktop. That usually means there's something worse than just a bad save or lack of memory, so if you crash from a loading screen, you dun blown it bad somewhere.

Stable uGridsToLoad - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/41592/
Despite only claiming to allow you to change the uGridsToLoad setting as much as you want, it adds quite a bit of stability at any setting.

-=(( OPTIONAL ))=-
OneTweak - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/40706/
Adds a bunch of useful features, but the one we're after is the Dynamic Process Priority.

ShowRaceMenu Precache Killer - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/33526/
Helps prevent crashes during character creation. Will create some lag, however. Personally, I'd rather have that than a sudden CTD.

Fuz Ro D-oh! - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/14884/
Provides a single set of blank sound files for NPCs without dialog. Modders have to package these with the mod themselves, so if they forget, it can sometimes cause... issues. This'll prevent that.

AutoSave Manager - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/34842/
Highly configurable SKSE saving. Tends to be more stable than the built-in autosave function as well, and will save you those moments of frustration if you crash/die after doing something difficult. Highly recommended!

Oh, you want to crash, do you? How 'bout no.

For those of you using Mod Organizer, which I EXTREMELY recommend, installation of all of these is a snap. Download though MO, install, launch SKSE through MO. Easy as that, no configuration necessary, EXCEPT for OneTweak, which I'll explain below.

For those with Nexus Mod Manager, you should be able to install these through NMM as well, however I would double check the file structure just to make sure it went to the right place. You can do so by checking the folders mentioned below.

For those of you who mod manually... who hurt you...? *rubs back*
But still. If you don't trust those crazy machines to do the work for you, you'll need to extract the DLL and INI files in every one of those mods to "Skyrim\Data\SKSE\Plugins". In the case of Fuz Ro D'oh, also make sure the Sound folder was placed in your "Skyrim\Data" like any other mod, and for AutoSave Manager you'll need to do the same with the Scripts folder.

Now, for configuring OneTweak, you'll need to open OneTweak.ini. If you use MO, this involves rightclicking on the OneTweak mod entry, Information, Filetree tab, and then inside the SKSE, then Plugins folder, rightclick the INI and Open. For anyone NOT using MO, you'll have to navigate to Data/SKSE/Plugins, and open it yourself.

Now, see the line under [Global] that says "Driver = 1"? Change that to "Driver = 2". That will enable greater support for D3D9 DLLs such as the ENB you installed earlier.

And of course, never forget that LOOT is your best friend. This beast of a tool digs into the mods themselves and checks for conflicts, then rearranges your load order accordingly. It comes build into Mod Organizer by default, but for the rest of you, go grab it!
LOOT - http://loot.github.io/

Launch Skyrim. Enjoy a stable game.

Congratulations, you've made it! Now you have a strong platform to start modding on, or may have just saved your heavily modded install from 5-10 minute restart sprees.

Keep in mind, this won't solve ALL your problems. A bad load order will still cause problems. The lack of/corrupted bashed patch (or any other patch type) will still cause CTDs or other issues. Too many scripts running or mods that require mass amounts of graphical processing will still cause poor FPS. This guide only brute forces some Creation Engine fixes, knowing what your computer is capable of is still immensely valuable.

If you're interested in digging deeper and moving beyond the basics, I suggest looking into these:

Skyrim Project Stability - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/32363/

Speed and Stability Guide for ENB - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50214/

Skyrim Stability Guide - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50244/

Skyrim Graphics Guide - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/55921/

These guides will overlap with each other in some areas, but they all touch on things that the others don't, so they're all worth your time. You'll be surprised at how even the smallest changes in your Skyrim configuration can result in much better performance and stability.

Potema CTD Fix - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/24290/
Any outfit that changes the Jarl clothes will conflict with the Wolf Queen quests. This will fix the issue, in exchange for giving Potema an... interesting wardrobe choice.

Fast Respawn 72 Hours - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50346/
Makes grid cells clear and respawn much more quickly, which means less save game bloat and faster load times.

Artificial Intelligence Limit Increaser - http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50823/
Increases the simultaneously running AI limits. For those of you with a lot of increased population or heavily scripted mod sets, this will just about ensure that everything runs smoothly. Will add some lag however, due to the increased scripts running at once. Place at the VERY BOTTOM of your load order, even lower than the bashed and skyproc patches.

Cat tax.

OP is the Talos we need

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It can be daunting, but this can help a vanilla install too. You may have less issues, but you never know when Skyrim will eat your save!

11 years ago | Likes 95 Dislikes 0

Also, be sure to install "Schlongs of Skyrim" for increased performance and immersion.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I want EDI in Skyrim! But I'm a dirty console peasant. :(

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll stick with Fellout 3 and NV. Skyrim is fun, but I prefer the wasteland. Good info though.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I tend to flip back and forth between them.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm going to favorite this to never look at it again. Just in case.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i said the exact same thing then i scrolled all the way down to favorite

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Finally a how-to on Imgur that applies to me!

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

commenting for later use. this is why i like usersub more then fp

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But...now it is front page....dun dun dun

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never managed to crash Skyrim with 200+ mods. I feel like i'm missing part of the experience.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Posts like this make me glad I'm a peasant. Stopped playing Guardians of Middle Earth because I have to delete a file when finished.

Thanks for this.

Mod and patches game to make it more enjoyable. Has to patch the patches to patch the game. FML.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some people, like myself, are just obsessed with changing things for the sake of changing them. We're crazy like that :P

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I would do this, but unfortunately I am the High King of Skyrim.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

This needs more points.

Who is this, "4Chan"?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I saved this post in 2014. Don't suppose its still relevant?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Much of it will still be relevant for Skyrim Classic, though you may want to check the comments on each Nexus mod to see if someone's (1/?)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

mentioned a potential replacement. The majority of this won't work or isn't necessary for Skyrim Special Edition, due to SKSE not yet (2/?)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

being released for SSE, as well as general overall engine improvements and the 64-bit format. (3/3)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ima nexus member. I use the forums for help, and most endorsed to find mods that are good.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But you don't still use NMM right? RIGHT?!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like the Nexus manager too. Its easy to install and uninstall big complicated mods.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TL;DR: Skyrim is a headache if you want to get good.

"Give Firstborn to Sheson"

11 years ago | Likes 89 Dislikes 1

Not Placebo

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

This line is not needed. I was only necessary in an old version, where you needed to compile skse at your own

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

@bwfang1235 please explain why this is necessary, I really love my son :(

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Well you have to sacrifice SOMETHING for more memory! But in all seriousness, it's actually not necessary anymore. When SKSE took over 1/?

11 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

memory handling, they patched it out of ENB. It's just amusing, and it changes nothing to have it there, so I just leave it in for laughs :P

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Literally, will not work without that line...

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

why not?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have absolutely no idea, I just know it does nothing for memory management without that line... mind boggling

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Its not needed anymore

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup, they dropped it a while back in an earlier version. I just leave it in for the laughs, since it doesn't hurt anything!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

News to me... but I haven't modded skyrim in a few months... been playing console :/

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OP, what exactly is "Wet & Cold"?

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27563/? ~ They also added a bunch of other features!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They answered for me, but also be warned: It's script heavy. This means that it can have an impact on your load times and performance.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Dynamic visual effects for wet and cold areas. During rain, snow etc. http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/27563/?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hypothermia simulation, which is a lot more fun than it sounds.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You're thinking about Frostfall. If I remember correctly, Wet&Cold is mostly a cosmetic thingy.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I knew that. Derp.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's a mod that adds snow and rain effects to your character and NPCs as well as objects caught in rain/snow. Adds fantastic realism!

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I mod manually

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Unlike @bwfang1235 I conclude you are infact, a spider due to your evil sins against humanity and I dun like spiders. So I dun like you

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You poor, innocent child. Don't worry, we still love you.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like having control over what I put in my game. Yes I know I sound like someone arguing against GMOs right now and I hate myself.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well that's the beauty of Mod Organizer! It puts nothing in the game unless you tell it to, unlike NMM. You have full control!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Upvoted & favorited. Maybe this'll get me playing Skyrim again.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Like you need more reasons that hearing the word "khajit" to play Skyrim again...

Don't forget the one that gives you a horn on your crotch

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

The lower human horn?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took a giant pink dildo in the knee.

Hahahaha, can't do that! It's flagged as adult, with pictures of large floppy pink things flying into faces and butts!

Is there a x64 version of Skyrim yet? Or at least a version that can use more than 8G of memory natively?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There's no x64 version, and probably never will be. However, patch 1.3.1 flagged TESV.exe as Large Address Aware, allowing it to 1/?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

allocate up to 3GB of memory total, and then ENB through its own means also allows you to bypass THAT limit, as it uses its own process 2/?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

to allocate more memory for graphical effects, allowing Skyrim to use more memory for scripting. Even under heavily modded installs, 3/?

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

that should give you all you need. I mod like crazy, and I've never needed 8GB! 4/4

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seperate process to 'use more memory'? The only conceivable way that could 'work' would involve some IPC mechanism to remap memory (1/x)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This. I have ~300 mods. The scripting engine in the game is more of a soft limit than memory is nowadays since it can only run so many.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

on demand; incredibly inefficient given it's essentially a hackjob implementation of AWE. (Also, that flag enables the whole 4GB on x64)

I play medium graphics at about 30 fps on a shitty stock laptop without performance boosts. Its $10 on steam, there's really nothing to lose

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

30fps is still playable. That's how I ran Oblivion because of reasons. Wouldn't want to dip much lower than that though.

Ha, I was planning on changing my name to something less lurky, you just reminded me! And glad it helped! I'm doing another soon!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well that all depends on what you're looking for. The textures in Skyrim can be a bit dull and undetailed, but new ones can fill your 1/?

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, not heresy.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kool...

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is really bad advice. Steam mods auto-update, meaning they can cause conflicts when authors change things. You can damage save-games.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Guess I'm just lucky.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Huh. I've been using about 30 of them for over a year, and never had an issue.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's probably due to the small number. Right now I'm running around 90 for each of the 4 profiles I currently have up. Some run +200.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And honestly can't find more than that worth using.

Gopher's fantastic, but not everybody has the patience to listen to 5+ hours of dialog. Depends on the type of person you are! I've been 1/2

modding ES games since Morrowind, and I still go to him for reference points sometimes, but I've never watched the whole series.

Mate, some of us built their computers specifically for this game, after having played it for 2 years.

11 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

I'm currently doing that now and I can't wait.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Yeah, I can't even play Skyrim properly on PC because the mouse won't work in it :(

Gopher is fantastic! On that "clean your mods" step however, you've gotta be REALLY careful with that. Some mods use dirty edits to do 1/?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

whatever it is they intend to do, and if you clean those edits, the mod will no longer work. Or worse! Cleaning Skyrim's own masters 2/?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

just fine, but careful if you aim that tool at any other mod. Just because BOSS/LOOT says something has dirty edits doesn't mean you 3/?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

should clean it! Oh, and optimizing NIF files can potentially go badly as well. Just throwing that out there! 4/4

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wups - step should have been called "clean your masters". Gopher recommends leaving mods alone unless you know for sure they need cleaning.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Should also add a "NMM almost always recognizes non Nexus mods, it just takes a couple tries sometimes." note in there.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you meant in my guide, it's only helping with stabilizing your core install. This is true though! NMM reads the files inside the mod 1/?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

archive, so if it can't find your mod on the Nexus, it'll fill in what info it can. Mod Organizer does this as well! And I feel, much 2/?

You think THIS is complicated? Try modding old-school Oblivion back when Bethesda didn't support mods like they do now

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

>old school

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Hahaha, right? Hell, I modded Morrowind. THAT was some ninja hacker crap right there. Tools to modify the EXE and everything.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's even the basic basics. The full basics is even more in depth.

Anyone who's looking to start modding should definitely be looking there. Mine is for stability, that link is proper practice!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, check out the guide links near the end, it gets trickier! This stuff is fairly easy to do though, it looks worse than it really is.

I'm still stuck on the ENB step :( tutorials online say I need an ENB preset, you really need to give more info here.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Okay nevermind that, I didn't scroll down >_>

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Glad you figured it out! =D Yeah, the ENB actually comes with its own config (enbseries.ini), but it's barebones and looks meh. And it's 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

not necessary for what this guide is attempting to walk you through!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also, BOSS to do your load order and stop crashes.

11 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 3

you can't really depend on BOSS alone, you have to check and make sure everything is in place or else bad things will happen

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...and Wrye Bash for everything else.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Mod Organiser comes with Loot already.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Wasn't thinking about it since the guide was aimed more at engine fixes, but added LOOT under the "want to crash do you" section anyway!

There are some good tutorials on cleaning mods too

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone who is about to start modding skyrim...halp

Check out Gopher on youtube, he got a lot of tutorial videos :)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

And MXR / MMoXReview for fun mods. Gopher's all tutorials and immersion mods, which is why I have both subbed.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

the perfect combo!

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yea, Gopher helped alot. Step by step, easy to understand, good taste in mods.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Will do thank you!!

GopherVids is the one stop shop for tutorials. That and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Tes5Mod:Main_Page

If you have any problems or questions, feel free to shoot me a message

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

mods that you think are causing problems or don't like anymore

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

what went where and why. I generally make dummy esp's and pack all my mods into a bsa, very clean and user friendly, and easy to remove

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, learn to mod manually and understand what you're placing and where and why, it's MUCH easier to troubleshoot problems when you know
