Here is the story:

"Ok so my grandma is from Mt. Vernon, NY where she was a librarian at the Mt. Vernon Public Library for 50 years. She ALWAYS tells the story of how she gave Denzel Washington his first library card and how she remembers him for his unique name. "And he was the cutest thing"

So for a while several parties have tried contacting Denzel to no avail. But the nursing home where she lives set out to make her 99th Birthday Party very special. "

For her birthday she spoke on the phone with him, and said he would be near her in December, so he stopped by to say hi.

She made him 3 scarfs. She makes a scarf every day.

edit: I got permission to share this. I did not just post this all willy nilly.

FP Edit: First post and made front page. I want to thank my friend's grandma and the internet. Send me pictures of hot dudes... or a cute picture of an animal... basically anything but your willy nilly.

Punk ass book jockies for the win!

The library at Westchester Square, in The Bronx, was a home away from home for me and my friends in the late 1950's-early 60's. Go Denzel!

That is so adorable I can't make a sarcastic comment. Bravo to your grandma for being kind to Denzel.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm going to keep an eye out for winter pics of him to see if he rocks that scarf out and about

We all know grandmas are special. So the title should have read "Denzel Washington met my grandmother..."

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

That's incredible and adorable.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He looks genuinely happy to be hanging out with her. Very cool.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is awesome. And damn, she looks great for 99.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Denzel has always been one of my favorite actors. I've always wondered what he's like in real life.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If your grandma makes a scarf every day, her nursing home may be running a sweatshop on the side.

I'm straight, and I still think he's one handsome mother fudger.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I'm from Mt. vernon, NY. I still live in Mt. Vernon. Please God get me out of this fucking city

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As someone from the Bx, what is so bad about Mt. Vernon?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

One of the worst crime rates in the country. My mother sent me to catholic high schools because how bad and violent Mt. Vernon High is.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Woah, TIL.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have just watched America gangster. Thats one lucky lady

9 years ago | Likes 103 Dislikes 4

But did you watch training day?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

"you gonna kill me? Huh? In front of all these people?"

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Now, you have witnessed American Gangster the beginnings.. how it all started.. way back when, even before then.. That captivating smile...

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

All jokes aside, he's the lucky one. The fact After 4-5 decades, she remembers him, she's the real hero in that pic. He should feel honored

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

He kept saying "this is what it's all about" to his publicist, so I think he did feel honored.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Thanks @op! Give your grandma a Hug on my behalf when you see her in the future.. I so would, if I ever had the chance..

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Not my grandma, but I would give her a hug

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

So did he remember her?

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

They didn't ask, but to he acted like he did, which made her happy.

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 0

Well he is a award winning actor :) Kiss her cheek for me ( the one next to her nose not the other one)

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I like him even more now

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If he did or not, that's just great of him telling her he did. It's great when people make other people happy! Awesome actor and human.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

I think it's a bit condescending and insulting. You're going to die soon, so the truth doesn't really matter for you.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 11

Why would that mean the truth doesn't matter? Talk about condescending and insulting...

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Lying to people that likely won't learn the truth ever means you don't believe they deserve to be treated like adults.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 7

As a kid from Mt.Vernon who used the library during tough times at home, I think few understand the critical role that libraries play in 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1369 Dislikes 3

And always remember if your town doesn't have a great library you can usually use a University Library.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Andthentheyfucked.gif was not top comment. I am dissapoint.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 7

Faith in humanity restored briefly

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so true the library was my life growing up

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a children's librarian, and I'm so glad to hear this. We always hope that we can be more than just a place for books.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I think allot of us never stop to appreciate the adults who made these places safe havens. Thank you!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

What does dungeons&dragons have to do with this

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Grew up middle class but was on my own in college. The public library was by savior. For school stuffs & entertainment.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How have we not discussed libraries as great institutions? They are truly amazing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Currently in the bx, I enjoy stumbling upon people from the area

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No shit. Libraries provide a refuge for many and a door to a greater universe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah man, anyone remember the movie The Pagemaster?

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

No but I'm gonna check it out. Thx!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yussssssss one of my all time faves

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My (now) wife and I moved across the country for her to go to school. Had No $$, our city's library became invaluable to me. Love libraries.

9 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 0

That's great! as other places went unfounded (community centers or senior centers,) libraries have survived enough to take on these roles.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I was head of Security at the White Plains library for awhile, the amount of time and effort some of the kids put in, or just to have a safe

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

place to go for awhile always made me put in a little extra effort to make sure no one was bothered while inside.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Thank you for your work

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you ever considered doing an AMA about your experiences?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I did a small one a long time ago when the work stories thing was big, no one was interested lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lol. It's just catching he right folks at the right time I guess. I went to stepinac & lived on the corner of e post rd & Lexington so 1/2

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 your library & the food court at the galleria were a great place to do homework for the 1st 2 years of HS. So thankful...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, the study rooms were a nice feature in case you needed total quiet without interruption

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 cities. Now as a world traveled architect who owns a firm, I direct much of our charity donations to local underfunded libraries.

9 years ago | Likes 1062 Dislikes 4

I once had sex with a girl in a library bathroom

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Also when its freezing outside and you have no place to go

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My town's library is majorly underfunded and in desperate need if you're interested in a new library charity case for donations.

9 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

art vandalay, is that you?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Have you seen the new addition to the Guggenheim? It didn't take very long either.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Send some to NOLA. Most depressing library I've ever been in.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm currently a public librarian. My colleagues are fantastic. This makes me happy to know it's made a difference in your life.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Doing God's work!!!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As the daughter of a librarian, THANK YOU. Libraries all over the country are getting funding cut, especially in schools.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

...are you Ben Hanscom?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What channels does one have to go through to apply for help ?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where is you firm based?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please just don't be an architect who makes the library all pointy and angled, us young folk think it's dumb

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

My modest firm doesn't get such fancy commissions. Actually I find those uncomfortable angles awful. Designers' egos are out of control

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Yay he gets it! Lol I mean, I'm cool with *modern* but I don't want to cut myself on the front door walking I

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Don't want to bore you with Arch. theory. Imho some popular designers are just taking advantage of computers helping us draw crazy shapes.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You sound like a good guy!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope to do this someday. Unfortunately my local library is shit. They went the tech route and have hardly any books. Just computers.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That is so sad.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah the good ol humblebrag. Seriously tho kudos

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 3

You get a pass when it involves charity.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Thanks. I spent so much time there I would even check out weird al vinyl records which made me laugh through tough moments. Still love Al.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

True stuff

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No brag, living with abusive uncles. The library was a safe place for a shitty childhood.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I'm kidding man. You rose above a shit situation so kudos

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Yeah sorry I didn't want to make myself sound fancy. Everyone has struggles, many much bigger than me.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0
