Goodbyyyyyye, Moonmen
We say goodbyyyyyye, Moonmen

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

I went to a middle school named after him.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Having schools named after you if the reason one becomes an astronaut

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Rocketmaaaaaaaaan

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

First American, not first human though.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Why is it called a space walk and not a space float with phish phish gun?

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Succinctness?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Space floats require space root beer and space icecream, and a cold space glass, preferably with a space straw to drink through

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I can’t imagine

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And he didn't want to come back inside the capsule.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He also looks to have invented the selfie stick.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He didn't fit back in the capsule, his balls were too big.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

No, they were strapped (not joking, all his suit was strapped to avoid it inflating too much and prevent him to come back inside)

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It kinda makes you wanna... Break into song? Yep. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at_f98qOGY0

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

and yet people are all on here acting like SpaceX invented space, cameras, round earth, cars, sex, etc.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Literally noone says that

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always think about how absolutely scary but wonderful must be to jump out into space like that.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A hand-held oxygen jet. Hand-held. Those were real heroes.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 1

That's really neat

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

They don't twinkle when there's no atmosphere between you and them

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always assumed they would still twinkle because they are so small that they would affect different vision cells as your eye moved.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

probably doesn't work like that because you technically go blind (very briefly) when your eye makes microadjustments.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you aren't perfectly still then those points of light are still going to shift from light cell to light cell. Don't know rod cell's arc

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

so he didn't actually walk on the first walk in space? hmm.. i'm starting to see some things line up with nasa and you round earthers..

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

also, i'm just kidding. i'm not a flattie. the only issue i have with nasa is that it's not more important to people.. we should be up there

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We're up there again. It's not about NASA it's about gov't funding.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This was, of course, 1 month after Alexej Leonow became the first man to walk in space.

5 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

As far as we know... he may have been the first man to walk in space and get back alive. Heard some stories.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

One way or another it was well before White. Not downplaying him, he was still Nr 2 with way less problems, but calling him "First American"

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

and not "Second Human" while ignoring Leonow is bordering on falsification of history

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Was this by the same guy who told you Stanley Kubrick directed the Apollo 11 moonlandings?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And then the tether snapped...

#3 on my top 3 of "ways I don't want to die", behind drowning and burning to death

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Buddy in charge of that probably rated the thing to like 2000lbs just to be safe haha

5 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Engineer Here: You do your worst case calculations on that, multiply it with a safety factor, and eventually add a bit just to be darn sure.

Marcus deserved it for eating Theodore.

SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE

5 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That's right mate, we're in space

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ed White died in the Apollo 1 fire, fast tracking many of the safety requirements we have today for astronauts

Like not cutting corners with Velcro next to DC switches in a pure oxygen atmosphere

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not as clear-cut as you think.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're right... Velcro next to DC switches in a *high-pressure* pure oxygen atmosphere, since they had to simulate 6-8 PSI at sea level.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ed White. Roger Chaffee. Gus Grissom

5 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Rest in Peace Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee.

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bet you're super fun at parties.

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

If I remember correctly, he almost died during that space walk as well. His suit expanded to where he couldn't fit back in the hatch. Had >

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

> to release almost all the pressure out of his suit in order to fit back in the capsule.

Are extremely dangerous in high oxygen and zero-g environments.

5 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

If there's no atmosphere on the moon aren't you just walking in space?

5 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 2

Nope. Spacewalking means walking outside in near-zero g. The moon's gravity resolves most of the challenges Ed White overcame.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Except there's just a tiny bit

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Depends on what you call space.. there are free floating gases even in space, it's just very sparse.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And if you go to Tennessee, you could be walking in Memphis

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's very difficult to moonwalk on the Moon.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, you’re walking on sunshine.

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Woa-Ho!

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are captured by the moon's gravity so not space walking.

5 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

Yup. Definitly walk walking.

5 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I think the moon has an atmosphere, in the sense that it has some gravity. It's just one of those "technically yes, but really no" things.

5 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Giant steps are what you take...

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I hope that my legs don’t break....

5 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it "space" if you're right next to a solid object? Do you say you're standing in the middle of a field if you're right next to a barn?

5 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This was *before* we went to the moon.

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The moon does have a thin atmosphere though so no

5 years ago | Likes 106 Dislikes 0

Depending on the altitude of his space walk could there have been more air than on the surface of the moon right?

5 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The moons athmosphere is so thin it doesnt really matter.

5 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

I didnt check but I would guess earth's athmosphere beyond starting point of space (100-200km) is easily thicker than moon's 1m above ground

5 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Like the earth's exosphere extends halfway to the moon. It's so thin. You don't really notice

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wow, way to skinny shame

5 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Wow, that's mean

5 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Moon atmosphere matter

5 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It was meant to be a joke but i didnt know that. You learn something every day.

5 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 0

on the internet if your joke is inaccurate someone sometime will correct you, its a law
