Mail

This, but also with work email. 99.99% of the hundreds of emails I get a week have nothing to do with me, but if the one email in a blue moon that needs a response from me gets lost in the noise, my supervisor will dive straight up my ass.

I have a lacking mailbox, fairly large. I literally get the mail every 3 weeks (about how long it takes to fill up). Maybe 3-5 pieces of mail I actually need to look at...maybe...

I like going through the ads to see grocery sales of the week while having a cup of coffee. We do have this thing in my country where you can personalize what you get in the mail for grocery stores, electronics etc. Which is neato.

I'd 80% of my mail is people looking for hand out.
Donated to SPCA, and now every different animal on earth needs my money.
But hey, some time they send. 50 cents in side.
Up to 30.00
Thanks

I missed one of those and now I owe money to a department that doesn't pick up their phone, wont reply to email, and can tell the DMV to not allow my car to register.

Ads are one of the things straight up destroying the world. Chop down who knows how many trees for the paper, ship the paper to a factory that bleaches them, ship them to another place to have whatever message printed on the, burn yet more gas to mail them to I don't know how many homes only for them to get tossed in the trash or recycling immediately.

Is it sad that I check my mail like once a month. It's nearly all credit card applications, bills I already pay online, and flyers for a local store I never shop at. So much wasted paper.

That's funny af. Junk mail should be illegal. So much waste, even if it all goes into a recycling bin in the lobby, still takes energy to recycle shit. If I want a weekly flyer, let me give the grocery store my mailing address.

I still pay all my bills by mail (except one) solely to support the USPS. It’s one of the best things this country has done.

That's not crazy. That's evil.

So the only difference is that the ratio for email is 999 to 1.

At my old place I felt so bad for the letter carriers. They had to walk up and down about 20 stairs just to deliver the daily junk mail.

and the 1 is the more likely for the post office to lose before they deliver it to you

junk mail? you mean free firestarters?

When my kids come home and drop the mail from the box into my mail slot I always gripe that I just did this mail thing yesterday and this is getting absurd.

Idk if it's just me, but after 20 years of reporting spam to Gmail I don't really get any spam in my non-spam folder.

Anything with postage that says "presorted" is bullshit. Trash without opening.

I look for the barcode thingy below the address, is that what we're talking about?

3 months ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This is false. Presorted first class mail exists and is incredibly common. Presorted just means the sender organized/sorted them before sending them out. Garbage mail is any third class mail, which almost always says "marketing" or "standard" where a stamp would go. Source: I was a mail carrier up until last year.

I should have specified - Presorted Standard vs Presorted First Class

Most of the money the postal service gets is from the shit you throw away.

3 months ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Marketing mail makes less than packages and way less than first class mail does.

But it still amounts to 20% of the USPS revenue ($15B in 2024) so good lock convincing them to get rid of it. Without junk mail, the USPS would be fucked, which is why you can't opt out.

In Canada you just have to put a note on your box saying No Flyers and they won't give you any. On the other side your mail delivery person gets paid for delivering flyers, not much but it adds up.

The USPS is largely funded by the ads. They even sell demographic data to the advertisers.

I do have the "please no ads" sticker on my mailbox, so I don't get the flyers anymore, but I still get the local shop magazines which are full of ads...

They do that in Australia too. My wife has a No Flyers sticker on her mailbox. However, personally, I'll take the extra junk mail with having the option of reliably sending outgoing mail via my home mailbox. That they don't do there, and from what I read, it's not a sure thing in Canada, either.

In the US you can have them pick up packages too! For free, since the USPS is self funded

Not everyone even has a home mailbox here in Canada. Some places have community boxes instead.

That redesign to community boxes suuuuucked. My disabled neighbor has to drive to the box now, it's so inconvenient
