No love for MPV, Puush and MusicBee? BLASPHEMY! MusicBee is next gen WinAMP!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OBS is popular for streaming butit's a hidden gem in the recording department imo once you get the right settings.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Add Blender for 3D imaging

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

v

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm still looking for a free decent video editor.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Use ninite.com to download these safely with no malware ????

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Logged in just to upvote this. I tell clients about Ninite.com and the lack of toolbars/boatware often.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

The crime lab I interned at used GMP because they didn't have the funding for all the licensing required for Photoshop for everyone.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I can vouch for f.lux. Shit's awesome.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Windirstat

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Audacity is an amazing tool for bass boosting :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

i made my own beats with it back when i was 13 xD

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I prefer Krita over Gimp.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Krita is more comparable to Sai or opencanvas vs gimp though. Gimp is an image manipulator/editor much like photoshop is where the others

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

are better for painting and drawing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Free as in it costs nothing. Not free as in freedom

9 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

uh...no, you're wrong on a few counts there

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

gimp at least is free as in speech. As are a few others on that list.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

My torrent client of choice is transmission.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No VLC, Notepad++, advOR(slow ass proxy but no install needed) or VirtualBox?? What kind of cut rate list is this I want my money back!

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

VLC and N++ are both epic. VLC is hands down the best media player out there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

VLC FTW! One of the only freeware I've been using for more than 15 years without any deception

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check out virtualbox.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Also, QEMU and KVM.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would add discord to the list as the best chat server. Superior to Skype

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And TeamSpeak

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Discord is better than TS

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When this comes up I always have to say: FireAlpaca is better for some people than gimp, studio one 2 free is free, for music sequencing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

FireAlpaca really depends on use case tbh. Photo editing you want gimp, but firealphaca is better for drawing. Though if you are more

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Serious about drawing, getting Opencanvas proper or even sai is a better option than firealpaca. Even for some drawing elements gimp can be

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

better in some regards. Though i don't know if firealpaca support wacom tablets (gimp had trouble with them in the past and haven't tried

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

more recently) and don't know if firealpaca falls to same issues or not being free and all.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Foobar? That's German right?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Too bad fewer and fewer protocols are working with Pidgin these days. (Not their fault.) MSN and YIM are now both broken.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, it was a little more relevant made i made this list

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

those were the days when i could use it for facebook messenger ...

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Been using irfanview since my Pentium 133MMX running win95. It has never let me down.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wait, fuck it was a 166MHz, not 133.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It started doing weird stuff with gifs and I (reluctantly) stopped using it. I wonder if they fixed that.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Shat was it doing?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Playing some gifs super fast.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Haven't seen that, maybe it is fixed but might have been the files themselves.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think Deluge is a better torrent client though.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

It's really slow-ass, both in terms of bandwith, and performance.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Open-source and blocklist support really sold me on Deluge.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I only found OBS like a week ago. Fraps is dead to me, DEAD.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

OBS is really good, i use it too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What recording settings are you using? I've got awful bitrate on mine...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

with both OBS and Fraps, you have to transcode. All I am doing is recording a game window, I get 1776kbps after transcode to mp4

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

ffsplit is so much better than either though. OBS underperforms like crazy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought uTorrent had been generally abandoned because it became ad-infested bloatware?

9 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 4

noobies use it use Deludge

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

oldversion.com

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I much prefer the Flud BT client on Android.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That and they were harvesting bitcoin. ????

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's why they linked a good version.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Haven't updated and not going to

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

yes. Use deluge. It's open source!

9 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 4

Aw hell no. It barely even scratches 4mbps out of my 100mbps connection.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is, but is bad. Sluggish on both Win and Linux. qBitTorrent is really a better option + it has implemented search engine

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I rarely use torrents since my torrent sites were taken

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Use newsgroups instead.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oznzbd ftw! Though they're not free any more.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

kickass.cd is up for now. it's pretty good

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Dont use public torrent sites thats how u get virus or letters in mail. Use private or newsgroup

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's newsgroup?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That's why the specific version was noted, before µTorrent was injected with that garbage. I still won't touch it myself though.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I had noted the version number but these things can be sneaky with the updates.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Still using 1.8.5 here. Considered changing to Deluge for some modern features.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I use Deluge and its solid

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Took me a while to find what the new name for Azureus was. :) Might try that too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used 1.8.5 for a couple years, myself. Now I'm on uSerenity, which is a 2.2.1 variant (one of the most highly rec'd versions anyway).

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have always used transmission since it's the default bundled with a bunch of linux distros.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For a reason. Deluge sucks ass.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

MS Office is something I just can't recommend going free. The real deal is so ubiquitous and has so much support ... just fucking buy it.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

.doc sucks, and they hardly support .odf. ms can suck a dick.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You can get away with Word alternatives probably but it's super annoying using Excel alternatives when you wanna do complicated stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No, it really depends on what you're doing. I'm doing absolutely fine with GDrive, but I can see why some people would need teh full package

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Anything for work or school I just don't see the point of using an excel alternative unless it all but steals the formulas/interface.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

teamviewer makes it so easy to share screens, that it's actually super easy to exploit to hack someone.

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 7

The amount of scam calls I got asking me to download teamviewer

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Glad someone pointed this out.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

explain

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 2

Thanks

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

"However, it appears that a majority of affected TeamViewer users were not using two-factor authentication." That's idiot users' problems.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interesting. Thanks for posting.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I use join.me

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

so do i, its fun but it does want a subscription i believe

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Problems with join.me. Seems to be a problem with unmuting when screensharing. Plus if you have a lot of meetings you need several accounts

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You don't need accounts to use join.me, I've actually never registered, it's a one-use and throw away program...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You download the little package, choose to install or just run, then give the browser URL out

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

if you are using it for 10 min to solve a problem you are very safe :P

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

only if you can turn it off afterwards. remember the program is designed to run in the background wanting for a join request.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

There's an option to install it for unattended use in the installer, I don't believe it's the default. Also there's the standalone client.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not to mention, you can choose in the "installer" to just run it once and not actually install anything...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All the reports about "hacks" are from users dumb enough to use one password on multiple sites, or using suspicious pass managers. Fuckwads.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I only use it to help my dad with his PC, or to connect to my PC with mobile device.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It was also hacked recently. Open the door to hackers by installing it. A simple port scan can you. Use with virtual box to be secure.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

It was not hacked recently.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Yes it was.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A port scan can't reveal a teamviewer computer behind a router as it connects outgoing to their server, it doesn't open an incoming port.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

5938

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great... you stated a port number, that doesn't prove shit. I checked all the PC's I have running it, and none of them have that port open.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

F.lux has been a saving grace, for me.

9 years ago | Likes 66 Dislikes 2

same here, i never wake up in the morning any more with red eyes after downloading F.lux!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's supposed to make it easier to fall asleep. The thing is, if I'm using my computer at night then I don't want to fall asleep.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Microsoft is working on implementing it in Windows 10 right now.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

And it costs five hundred dollars per month.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 6

Prepare for a butchering!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I've been using it since college. Eye saver.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Legit makes me sick when its on. Just doesnt agree with my eyes

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I really wish they had it for mobile, Cuz there are only bad alternatives for phones out there :(

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

It exists for iOS and Android, but your device has to be jailbroken/rooted for it to work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Actually, night shift mode in the display tab on iOS 10

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nightshift mode is only for 64 bit devices. For those who have A7 devices or older, they'd have to jailbreak.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ok thanks

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Although Android 6.0 should have something built in, I use Twilight on my LG. I recommend it.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I have LiveDisplay since 5.0, but I'm running AOSP/Cyanogen. I thought it was a default option since 5.0?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sound reasonable. Damn OEMs don't implement default features. WHERE IS MY DPI SETTING LG?!?!?!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

On Android: the Twilight app, yo.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Can confirm, it's a life saver

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm running AOSP based ROM on my device - temperature correction is implemented as LiveDisplay. Works like a charm.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well but imo the Twilight app looks bad. The best ok looking alternative I found was "Bluelight Filter", it has a black filter, unnoticable

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you for not including VLC. It's garbage.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 4

How is it garbage?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's ok for casual movie watching.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is VLC garbage? Genuinely curious here.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Its codec support is average at best. It also does not handle UHD well at all. It's gotten better, but there's still tons of needed work.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wouldn't call it complete garbage, but it receives a lot more praise than it deserves IMO.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bad ASS subtitles support, problems w 10bit video, green artifacts, frame drops, ugly scaling, incorrect color management, high CPU usage...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

i dont know when you last used VLC, but i havent had any of those issues for a long time. i agree it was fucky in the past, tho

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what is a better alternative?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Daum PotPlayer or MPC-HC. I prefer PotPlayer because it has more features.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

mpv is great, and has very flexible options in the config files; one of which is to quit any video and open it back at the same spot later.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Holy crap, someone that suggests/uses Foobar2000. I usually have to explain what it is to people...

Centipedes? In MY Imgur?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$$$

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

I prefer Krita over gimp though.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think GIMP was meant to be an all-purpose image editor, Krita is a painting tool. It's not an alternative, rather a complement.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I haven't yet seen what Krita can't do, or go around. :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

foobar was a way for me to go on Windows - it's lightweight, customisable and damn fast. Too bad there are no Linux ports.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's great, but would it really kill them to add a theme, like... at all? Even if it's optional?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I did think about that and was going to research skins for it. There seems to be a lot if you google Foobar2000 skins

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah but that's the problem, they're all a pain in the ass to configure and not easily discovered.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Never even thought to skin my foobar honestly. I just set it to play music and go usually so this was the first time I looked..

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's pretty easy to find modern skins and sometimes even easier to install them, don't rely on old ones. Try DarkOne v4 by tedgo.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just wish there was something a little less minimalist than foobar. Full featured but also not bloated. Like the original winamp...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

AIMP. You need AIMP.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

You can add pretty much any feature you want to foobar with the right plug ins/components.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

He said "not bloated", capisce?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Like pilates4hotties said, you can add features and customize the UI completely. There's even skins to try, I believe.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You can put skins and there are plugins for virtually anything audio related, Foobar can be pretty much exactly how you want it to be.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Install mpv and codecs on windows.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No mention for MusicBee? :(

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never tried it. I've been using Foobar2000 for 8 years exclusively. Heck never even heard of it til today.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Highly recommending it. :)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doesn't seem available for Linux. Which is okay because THE BEST MUSIC PLAYER FOR LINUX IS CLEMENTINE. v

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Works well under wine.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Second this, using it sibce Amarok started derping with KDE4 few years ago. Rhythmbox is a way to go if Clementine is too complicated. 1/

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There is also a Windows port with almost all features, but depending on your hardware, it can be buggy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

When you're searching for free software, you usually come across these a few times. I use OBS YT and Twitch. Foobar because of a forum Im on

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would've loved to see musicbee there. I think foobar is too over the top for most people.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 2

Good to see some MusicBee love here.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Loooove musicbee. So good for transitioning away from itunes while keeping your playlists. :D

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I put the MusicBee as the primary recommendation in the second version of this list, because I agree

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Never heard of musicbee. Tryed it and now im in love with It :) thnx

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How is foobar over the top?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Possibly over the top minimalist? I dunno.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Kinda yeah. I like MusicBee because of how easily customizable and powerful it is.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Possibly too many features, also if you don't like the default UI...good luck changing it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

the UI changer is so fucking easy......

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I meant the theme/skin

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Literally all of these except GIMP and f.lux are very much unknown. I had to explain what 7zip is to my girlfriend last month.

9 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 11

Yep. 7-Zip is the default zip file handler on all the images are responsible for at the Healthcare Corporation I work at.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

same, been installing on client machines for years. I know they will use it with no issues and I'll never have to maintain it.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I detect sarcasm. But seriously, shell integration. Right click, extract to . Walking people through that is easy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No sarcasm. I do install on client machines. it works so well, most don't realize it isn't part of windows.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which decade/dimension do you live in? Or are you literally the Imgur version of Chris Traeger?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Actually, f.lux was the only one I DIDNT know.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But its the most awesome if you work at night. Be sure to setup your location correctly. All PCs I work with have it installed. Never w/o it

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Libre office is the best

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wish my girlfriend knew what a .zip file is.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have friends that still use winRar with its god awful nagging. They refuse to even look 7Zip's way. .7z has a great compression over too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Ninite has most of these in thier installer.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We use 7zip at my work, which is the State of Washington.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Audacity is pretty well known I think. I know what 7zip is too but unless you need it there's no real reason you should know what it is.

9 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Audacity is super well known. It's deploy to nearly all 80+ schools on the network we manage...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For some reason my brain skipped over Audacity entirely.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I actually came across Audacity pretty fast when I googled free music editors a few weeks back. It topped many lists.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

You must not have a lot of technical friends. Most of these have like millions of users and are a decade old.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I meant outside of my circle of technical friends. Obviously my tech friends know all these, I'm in computer engineering XD

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Love GIMP! Used it all through my photography class

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I read that as pornography class. *facepalm*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Love Foobar2000. Good stuff man!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Wish I could reply to groups of comments, Foobar has been my music player about 8 years now. Love it and can't wait for the mobile version.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Praise be foobar!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Oh yes, praise :D I have been using it about 8 years now. Didn't want Winamp, iTunes was heavy... Suggested as an up and comer.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Suggest a half decent skin that doesn't rely on a plugin that died 7 years ago ._.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

DarkOne v4 by tedgo, been using it for a year and it's almost perfect. Pretty customisable too.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

For Foobar? I have never skinned it, only just started looking at skins tonight and didn't seem to find anything that was too usable..?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had found skins before that were but it was a case of looking for long gone plugins and using old versions of Foobar.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1
