This helped me get a proper job. I hope it can help someone else.

It's my cake day. Here's the first thing I marked as a favourite because I was on my arse and needed to get a job. If you're in a similar predicament, I hope this can help you back up the ladder.

It's been a great four years. Imgur and the community have got me through some pretty rough shit. Merry Christmas one and all.

"Tell me something about yourself...". "I know where you live and what websites you visit when you think nobody is watching...".

In hiring I expect the fake answers. Consequently my questions are all multilayered and aimed at building a rapport.

Just had an interview yesterday, glad it was a dud cus it gave me a good chance to brush up and this will help a lot too!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This should be titled: "How not to get past the first interview"

Thanks for posting this. I am starting to look for jobs after taking a break to have kids. It's a whole different world out there.

Give me Job Pay me to do stuff Leave me the fuck alone and I will do it.. The End

Haha more favorites than likes... we’re all so desperate :(

25) Only for the right salary. And to quote K2SO: It's high. Very high.

Humblebrags are a fucking HORRIBLE response to "What's your biggest weakness". The point of the question is to see if you are self-aware,

8 years ago | Likes 112 Dislikes 1

'My biggest weakness is 123 but I overcome it by doing xyz'

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

open to constructive criticism, and focused on improving yourself.

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 0

What is your biggest weakness? "I don't answer bullshit questions"

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Don't be afraid to ask for clarification on questions. I usually followed broad questions with asking for some specificity.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I personally find interviews dull and unsatisfying, places only care about hoops not answers. Respect hr for existing and eat their shit. Pf

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I can't upvote this enough. I'm just about to go to an [graphic-design] interview! Wish me good luck!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Pic 1, advice #4: That's garbage advice. Every advice site warns you not to do that. Bosses recognize a humblebrag. (Didn't read further.)

8 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 1

What the fuck is that kind of 'weakness' anyway? 'Hurr, durr I wake up early!'

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

well if he wakes up early how is he gonna stay up late to fight crime and super villains and stuff? thats a weakness

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"My weakness? Chocolate!"

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

-"Dammit, not another dog in my interview" -"I'm not dog, sir", said Zer0th, trying trying his best to hide his tail wagging like crazy

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, stupid question too. Everyone lies with that one. If you're honest, you don't get the job. If you must, explain a weakness 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

usually an opposite of a strength, and also tell what you are doing to overcome that weakness.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One interviewer asked me why I wanted the job; I replied that I heard they had good parties. Then I laughed and said that I just needed ...2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

a job through school. He hired me!Maybe he thought a sense of humour was important. It was a fast food job, I was a teenager. Not professional

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm really glad this popped up today. I have an interview @ 1 within my department. It pays less but I cannot depend on my current coworkers

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well don't fucking ASK for less than what you're making within the same company???

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm asking our director for a lateral move. The new job has 10% raises for their fiscal year compared to the 5% for the past 2 years.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, okay, that's good then. Good luck.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Goddamnit, what nonsense. Do you know how often interviewers hear this shit? Ask questions, be genuine, answer intelligently and truthfully.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Think of them as just people, don't grovel and don't tell them what you think they want to hear.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Been getting denied from a lot of places. These tips helped me get motivated again. Thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hate interviews, I have to put on a fake arss smile and lie my butt off.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seems like not a great fit then? My next job I'm going into I loved the interview process. We were all extremely straightforward & honest.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I suspect he's talking about interviews like "why do you want this job" as if they're expecting that you've dreamt of it all your life. (1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's stacking shelves and smiling at customers, you twat. You need someone to do it and I need money, what more do you need to know?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A job interview post at Xmas time? Just to twist the knife for those without work? Cold OP

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Interviewer: Wow, you blew that interview out of the water... how did you do it. Me: Imgur...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Interviewer: But not at work, though, right? Me: ...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

35? That’s a lot of questions to prepare.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I suggest ending your interview with this question to the interviewer "Is there anything I have mentioned in this interview that has..

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

..raised concerns or that I can clarify?" That way, if yes, then you can address those concerns. If no, then the interviewer is made aware..

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

..that you gave a positive interview by their own standards and will generally remember the interview positively. Also, it makes you seem..

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

..thoughtful and open to critique as a way of improvement.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Anyone remember when you could interview just by giving honest answers?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My favourite question I’ve ever asked the interviewer was “do you enjoy working here? Why?”

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

I work in design so I usually ask what their favorite project and their hardest projects were and why (before I got this job).

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As an interviewer I've been asked this and enjoy answering it because I do legitimately like my job and the company I work for.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The last job interview I went to was basically the two interviewers shit-talking their own company and complaining about processes. When 1-

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

they asked me my salary range I gave them a ridiculously high number so they'd either A) not waste my time with an offer or B) pay what 2-

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it seemed like might make it worth it to work there. I did not get an offer. 3-3

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lmaooooooo

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Honestly, I would have called them out on it. “You’ve spent the last half hour bad-mouthing your own company. Why should I want this job?”

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Bad advice in a lot of this. Like just terrible.

8 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 3

Some good, some bad. I find that this can work in places without a good HR team. Otherwise I would not suggest a lot of this advice

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm replying to this comment from my office, at the lovely job i got directly from following this advice.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 19

Anecdotes do not equal data, especially when it is only a single one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yet clearly not a well run company if you can spend your work day on imgur.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

And I'm replying from a lovely job I got without reading anything in this post....

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Give yourself more credit. You got the job despite a lot of this 'advice' if you followed it closely, cos a lot of it is garbage.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Correlation not causation, just because you got the job don't mean it was because you followed this advice

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This is a comment I wish I saw more often on Imgur.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nope

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 14

Q1-NO! I can't know about your church, children, marriage, etc. Now you've opened this to potential discrimination issues!

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 1

Correction, you can't *ask*. If they volunteer the info, fine.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

True, that is correct, but I still don't want to be accused of using that info as a reason not to hire someone.

I interview a lot of people, and personally I find giving a disguised strength when asked for a weakness annoying. Seen it a thousand

8 years ago | Likes 268 Dislikes 2

Yes - there's always at least one thing about the position or workplace that will be a challenge - just say how you'll deal with it...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a former interviewer, I would've turned down the majority of the answers in the first graph

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Does "Honesty" and if HR says "-It's not a weakness" the reply "I don't give a fuck about your opinion" worth the try ? :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their suggestion has an error in it: "I take time in getting ready to the office..." perhaps attention to detail is their real weakness?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you are interviewing people and still asking that question, you need to review your technique.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

Yup. I regularly interview. Tell me something you're weak in and how you address or work on it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was gonna say... If this thing is 3-5 years old, it's probably already out of date. Job hunting moves as fast as marketing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

... which is really annoying for me, because I much prefer to deal in bald-faced truths, not marketing truths. And I HATE job searching.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's the thing with these info graphs... they totally ignore the fact that each interviewer is different, and looking for diff things

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Better advice I received for these questions, choose a concrete weakness that is easy to fix, not a personality flaw. For example,

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"I haven't kept up to date with the changes in X and Y technology because I don't work with them now, but I think I could

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

do A and B to get caught up pretty quickly for this position." Gives you a chance to address skill checkboxes you don't tick now.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

In contrast don't say "I'm always late", "I'm really lazy", "I don't listen." (And work on those if necessary. :) )

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3/ so I prefer an actual weakness, followed by here's how I fixed it

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

I have a habit that I'm sometimes too focused on a task. People say that's a strength, but it's a weakness when flexibility is important.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

But it's no longer a weakness if I fixed it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's still a weakness if you do other things to fix it, as long as it is still there. Just not a problematic one.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A hole in a steel beam is still a hole even if you patch and reinforce it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've also interviewed and hired a lot of people over the last 25+ yrs. I like this but go easy on the weaknesses.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Honest question: Is humor appreciated in an interview or is it considered unprofessional? When I get nervous I start cracking jokes.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Humor in good taste could be appropriate, even nervous (mildly) humor, if funny, could be fine. Depends on the audience so go easy.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair enough. Thank you. :)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

times. Meanwhile, I WANT someone who is selfaware and has thought about their weaknesses to find a solution

8 years ago | Likes 170 Dislikes 2

Yeah, like saying "I have too much of X quality." I usually talk about a weakness and what steps I have taken or am taking to improve it.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As someone with depression, that question always scares me. I feel like if I'm honest I'll be thrown out of consideration for sure.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Asking candidates "What's your weakness" is lazy and stupid. Saying "Tell how you identify and manage your weaknesses" is cool.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

can you give an example of a really good response?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always give an actual weakness then explain how I work with it or go about correcting the behavior.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

A weakness of mine? I eat on the job. Strength, I am still faster and more detailed with my work than other workers.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I completely agree. I always say I'm not as skilled at Excel as I'd like to be. Saying you're 'too committed' or 'a perfectionist' is wank.

8 years ago | Likes 78 Dislikes 1

I always say Public Speaking is my weakness, but that I’ve been working on it in many different ways.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Yup. Either give a weakness that you are presently working on. Or some self-awareness that you have managed. Not a fucking strengtht.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Speling iz not you're strengtht.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My keyboard's been acting up. And I hit enter as soon as I finish, so I never have a chance to spellcheck on Imgur (no Edit function!!!)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Then stop asking the question. it's stupid any way.

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 7

It's a question meant to judge self-assessment capability, to see how trustworthy your other answers are. If you can't think of a (1/2)

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 5

weakness, you're either being dishonest or you don't spend enough time thinking about your performance. It's a good question.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Exactly. If the literal answer was what we wanted we wouldn't need an interview.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's a question like "Do you know why I pulled you over?" ... you're phishing for incriminating evidence.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

You ask them to stop playing bullshit games with the human resources they are looking to strip mine and exploit? How Dare you!

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

It's a Fishing expedition. Just like when the cop asks you "Do you know why I pulled you over?" They want you to help them narrow the field.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

... in this case, by taking yourself out of the running. Ignore the human resources bullshit answer. They don't want you to wise up.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They want you to be a good little resource to exploit and hand them incriminating evidence, just like that cop hoping you'll admit guilt.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1
