Got the 1974 nordic home. Confirmed a stamped 396021F 455 big block from Oldsmobile. Pretty rough shape cosmetically. And that big block is no spring chicken

She's such a dirty girl at the moment haha. I just got the boat moved from VA to our house in nc. The trailer towed much better then I expected. New light kit, tires, and some love to the hubs made it feel quite safe for travel.

This project will probably take me quite a while. I'm too broke to buy everything at one,so it will be one thing at a time as I get nice commission checks to throw at her.

My next step is to remove the motor. I'm assuming it's going to be a full rebuild of the block, heads, carb, jet pump and pretty much anything else that should move.

I'll post updates of my progress from time to time if anyone's interested in seeing if I can manage to bring her back to sea worthy.

Please keep us posted!

Bot, are you ok?

We had the same 455 Olds in our 18’ Cheetah…. There is nothing else like the sound of a big block!

I worked at a boat shop for awhile. You’re mentally ill for taking this on, but I also respect and salute you!

So Oldsmobile motors were known for more torque than horsepower IIRC? Longer stroke than bore diameter? I thought Marine applications needed the reverse? Higher horsepower and less torque? I mean more like a Pontiac or Chevy motor...

Think you can float it with motivation in less than 5 years?

I was thinking this would take me 2-3 years honestly. My adhd don't let me sit still for long and a relaxing weekend to me seems to involve working in stuff anyways.

thats my next step haha. in NC i have a boat ramp at my neighbors house. so i will stick it in the water and find out. from looking it over, there are not obvious flaws that it would take on water. from my research Nordic boats are very solid in the fiberglass department. so im very hopeful as that will stop my whole restoration plans possibly. im just a back yard Diyer. dont think i can get into splitting the hull apart for major repairs

Buddy of mine made the mistake of not putting his in the water before throwing money at the engine. Slightly different hull shape than yours. Followed you to keep an eye on your progress. Good luck and have fun.

I am so nosy I have to ask, what did you pay for the boat? Not including the trailer.

Free. All they wanted was it off the lot. I was given title to the boat and trailer. I'm in it 300 on new rims and tires so far

Good luck internet friend and have fun!! A good cleaning will do wonders. I race on a friend's sailboat. He calls $100 "one boat dollar" so the price of repairs and replacing equipment doesn't sound so awful.

I have some other boats and jetskis. So I'm sorta versed in that marine tax everything seems to have haha.

I had an Oldsmobile 455 in a 1973 Cutlass many years back. Absolute unit of a power plant. Just make sure you use some of your restoration funds to buy an oil refinery

I had a 72 delta 88 with a 455. Between the leaks and the burning, I changed the oil once per year. Mainly for the new filter install

ha, ive been reading about some of the 455 and oil issues. thats part of the reason i think i want to do a full rebuild as i dont know much of it history either. except for the old owner tinkered ALOT. this would be more a toy boat for us. i have 2 other party/fishing boats also. think like a jetski for us.

I actually meant just for the fuel costs, lol. Kicking in the secondaries by putting my foot all the way down on the Quadrajet carb I had would move the fuel level while I watched.

Yeah. But there's worse ways to drop 60 bucks for an hour or so of good fun

No doubt, I miss that car on the regular! Would be a lot of fun to run that motor on the water
