THANK YOU! Everyone I know loved that show and I still can't figure out why.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

You do you, OP. You don't have to like it even if it's popular. I love the show, but I can totally see why the humor wouldn't be for everyone.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I thought it was funny, but there's not one wholly redeemable character in it. They're all utter assholes.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

1. Different cultures find different things funny. 2. Within the same culture, people from different times are interested in different things 3. Sometimes you just really don't like a popular thing and well that's ok

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

For the most part I agree, but this will never not be funny to me

It's never been my thing either. You are not alone.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well somebody's made my list of grievances. v

2 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 4

The show was terrible people doing terrible things nonchalantly and never paying for it. I never found that funny

2 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

Yeah, pretty sure George murders his wife, yeah? Then tries to get her money? That was a particularly dark set of episodes. With a laugh track. Disturbing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I agree, not only was it not funny, the characters are so unlikeable. They're just shit people.

2 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 4

The whole gag was that he was an unlikable jerk that was easy for the worst part of you to relate to at times. Nobody thinks he’s funny on the show.

2 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 5

Why would anyone ever want to watch people being jerks? That shit ain't funny

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you tried It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Post modern negativism is popular among humans these days.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They even had the "You are no comedian, Jerry Seinfeld" line from the gymnast in that one episode.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There was a super creepy thing about him going after his wife, she was 17 and he was 38 when they met

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same, found them all to be unlikeable, unfunny assholes.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I've been trying to force myself to watch Seinfeld (b/c it's iconic, and I must be missing something, right?). And I realized I watched an entire episode without laughing once. Not a chuckle, or a smile, or even a knowing eye roll. The commercials were funnier than the show.

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 5

It's iconic because it was the first sitcom to do what it was doing (show about deeply flawed protagonists presented as theirselves). You don't need to like it nor force yourself to watch it tho, all the best bits are all clipped already.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Seinfeld gets enough chuckles here and there that I can watch it to kill time but I rarely choose it and don't think I care to watch from the start. Plus seeing Jerry just reminds me of that time he whined like a bitch about his standup not landing.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Out of curiosity, did you start from the beginning (The Seinfeld Chronicles) or go with a specific or random episode?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oh no... this was just random episodes on TV. I didn't think the series even had a larger story arc where you'd need to.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It doesn't, it's just that the first season is generally regarded as not very good (common with sitcoms, as they sometimes need time to find their tone/characters).

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I never liked the show, I TRIED to watch it, but never laughed at anything.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

He’s a jerk too. Him and jimmy fallon laugh about the time they yelled at Amy poehler and Tina fey on snl and made them cry.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I totally agree. Seinfeld isn't funny at all, but the rest of the cast was quite good and carried the show for him. You can tell that Larry David was the funny behind the show (IMHO) because 'Curb' is everything 'Seinfeld' wishes it could have been.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 7

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Correct. ✅

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I agree. I can’t stand to watch it

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

Its a very polarizing show for opinions. Heis humor is found really funny or annoying. I'm in the later group. It feels forced and always fell flat for me.

2 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 5

Same

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What is the deal with airline food?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The show isn't Seinfeld's humor, it's Larry David's humor. While George is explicitly the Larry David stand-in, practically all the petty hang-ups everyone has are rooted in Larry's point of view. Seinfeld's humor is seen during the brief stand-up segments, the "what's the deal with X" stuff.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

His tapings & Specials were pretty f'ing good. Evolved, peaked, drew a close, started over from SCRATCH, and grew again. Found that rad af.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I truly loathed everything about Seinfeld. It all seemed low effort, repetitive, and willful justification for sociopathic behaviors.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

Until you remember it's just a comedy sitcom.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

For it to classify as comedy sitcom, there would have to be something funny in it, wouldn't there?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Weird to pretend that millions upon millions of people found it funny, as we can see by its undeniable success.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

See... People can have opinions about silly shit like this. I personally don't like John Lithgow in movies. So what? OP said he personally didn't find a particular TV (telly if that suits you) show funny. It's an opinion. It's subjective. OP isn't "pretending" anything or saying it wasn't wildly successful. Nobody is denying anything. Also Kennedy is dead and birds are real. Chill the heck out.

My brother like Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother, The Office and Letterkenny. I can’t stand a single one and he refuses to watch Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia.

2 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 5

I like Always Sunny, but it definitely isn't for everybody - every single character in that show is mildly (side characters) to extremely (the main cast) off-putting. that said, Big Bang Theory is atrocious and he should feel bad for liking it.

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

okay but someone who likes himym obviously doesnt have any issues watching a show full of awful asshole characters

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 5

Thank you for speaking truth. Marshall I think was the only morally standing character - lily, Robin, Ted and Barney were all terrible people... but that didn't stop me from enjoying the show

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

no for sure marshall is awesome, barney being terrible is played as a joke that kind of aged poorly, and ted being awful is often a learning moment within the context of the show, but i think it's underrated how absolutely awful lily is and the show never acknowledges it

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

see I love that show , that one is funny to me

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

I can't explain why, but I generally enjoyed (but didn't love) HIMYM, while Letterkenny was great but is now stale. Didn't like the others.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What's your take on HIMYF?

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It had promise, but failed to follow through, cast too big. Hillary Duff wasn't bad, but most stuff with her character (especially with her main love interest) were pretty dull. Her best friend was fun at times, the relationship with the Brit might've been the best one on the show. The main love interest's buddy who owned the bar was fine, but again had little going on except "long distance is tough", the sister was fun but a bit too "Kramer" at times. Tie-ins to HIMYM were eye-rolling.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I watched an episode or two and meant to keep going but I just had other stuff to watch that hooked me better. Just as well. I heard it's cancelled.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it got cancelled. Can't blame you for not getting into it/being distracted by other stuff. I like the routine of a weekly release, so it was easy to catch it, especially since it was minimal investment (20-25 minutes a week, don't need to pay as much attention, etc.)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was in a, er, group hospital for a little while and they insisted on watching the office every night. It made me consider escape, and i was there voluntarily.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Why would you find Seinfeld creepy? Just because he dated a 16 year old when he was like 40? Ohokaythatsaprettygoodreason

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 4

oh i actually did not know that . I don't really read anything about celebrities , its not important to me . but yeah he kind of gives off that kind of vibe

To me fronds is as funny as any sitcom could get. Cannot wrap my head around what would make cringe ever funny.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That reason is why it's funny, the uncomfortable, absurd, tragic feeling of a situation. That is funny.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And Friends isn't funny,

I feel the same about The Office.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Sooo creepy with a dose of racism.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Seinfeld was WAY funnier than the office back in the day. The office had funny moments.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

I tried to watch the UK Office when it first came out, and only managed about ten minutes. Same reaction to Peep Show and Alen Partridge.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The Office was bad because the characters were all horrible people. It would be one thing if they learned and grew to be better people over the course of the show, but they're just as awful at the end as they were in the beginning.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 8

Just like Seinfeld and Friends. You can toss most sitcoms into that grouping, actually.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I actually never watched enough Seinfeld to know, but I'd believe that. I always thought it was boring and not humorous at all.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Me either. Have you try English version. I like that.

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 8

Both are terrible, but I also cannot stand that smug git Ricky Gervais.

same for both honestly. never liked either

You may be highly empathetic. The increased sense of empathy makes it difficult for people to enough such shows

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 8

This is a terrible take.

2 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

'I don't like [show].' 'Well, let me just psychoanalyze you right quick!'

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 7

As an empath, I understand that take. There's plenty of movies about people falling on hard times. Some people see them as a beautiful tragedy depicting the strength of the human spirit. They just make me depressed though. That being said, I love The Office and appreciate Seinfeld.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was always told that I just didn't get it whenever I said I didn't think it was funny. Guess I still DON'T get it...

2 years ago | Likes 87 Dislikes 10

They’re a bunch of schlemiels if you ask me.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The joke was almost always smugly judging people that you don't understand and made no effort to understand. I get why it appealed to the boomers.

2 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 8

Oh my god, it just clicked in my mind why my Catholic magas love seinfeld. I never got the appeal, and was bored to tears with it.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Monty Python is more my thing, and that has terrible things like political commentary and boobies.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just group it in the "cringe" category that I don't care for. My life is awkward enough, I don't want to watch other people being awkward

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am like that with the office. I don't enjoy second hand embarrassment, or laughing because characters are stupid people rather than people who make stupid decisions.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've tried multiple seasons of 3 just because they're so popular, before I gave up and realized it just wasn't for me. Seinfeld, Everybody Love Raymond, and The Office... Last Man on Earth tricked me by switching to HUGE 2nd hand embarrassment

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I always wondered if I was supposed to laugh at Raymond's parents? Or not, because they were so fucking mean. I couldn't. I understand exactly what you're saying.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

He is not a good actor or comedian. I don't get the shtick.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I agree with this, but I still think the show was good. Mainly because the rest of the cast and Larry Davids writing was top notch

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I had this is exact experience! I never understood the Seinfeld popularity or humor.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yes, I felt the same way. And I always thought, until today, that it was a kind of typical American humor that I, as a European, perhaps just don't understand.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

What bothered me most about Jerry is that he threw away women so non-chalantly. Oops, she sneezed weird, bye bitch

2 years ago | Likes 543 Dislikes 39

Everything that landed them in jail in the last episode is why I never liked Seinfeld.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

That was the point of Seinfeld. They're all terrible people and the audience laughs at the portrayal of actual people you could probably meet just by strolling through lower Manhattan.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

That's the whole point, they were all highly disfunctional

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It was my understanding that that was the joke? Like an early prototype of Always Sunny, the main cast is frequently in the wrong, and makes terrible choices for the audience's amusement.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What if I told you that the whole point of the show was that NONE of them were good people?

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think that was a big point of the show: how superficial he and his friends really are. I mean Larry David (Co writer and creator ) even had a rule - no hugging and no learning. Meaning the characters can't and won't learn from their mistakes and there won't ever be any cheesy sentimentality. They literally only cared about whether or not something was funny.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mulva?

2 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

The humour comes from the fact that few sane people actually act like that. It just kind of scratches an itch to laugh at it when you can relate to your loved ones having weird, maybe off-putting quirks I think.

The characters are not good people. Its tricky because none of them are rly amazing actors either, so you feel as if that's who these people are, but they're playing "the worst version of themselves" because dumb conflicts is a lot of the humor for the show. Four self obsessed people arguing about inane nonsense. That's the show.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jerry is a pretty lousy actor, but Michael Richards, Jason Alexander, and Julia Louis Dreyfus are pretty amazing actors

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

New headcanon- Jerry is super closeted but wants to make the appearance that he's trying to find the right girl. But he rejects them all because "Women! Am I right?" (extremely forced laugh track)

2 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 6

That's what I loved about the show. He was an asshole, so was George and Elaine. Kramer was the nicest one of the bunch and he was cast as eccentric which I found interesting as an observer. I found it entertaining to watch awful people fail at being awful. That was the attraction to me. I did not enjoy it because i liked them. I enjoyed it because I liked seeing bad people fail. "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" is very similar but takes it to the next level and I love that show too.

2 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

"Kramer was the nicest one" Ironically Kramer's actor being hard racist in real life

Weren't most of their problems self-caused? I.e. Kramer decides to paint over the lines on part of the highway to provide double-wide lanes, this causes bad traffic, Kramer wants to use paint remover, but spills the 55-gallon drum. Elaine driving that night enjoys the wider lanes and weaves back and forth, causing a sewing machine to fall off. Newman is driving home, his van catches the sewing machine, creates sparks, and sets off all the paint thinner. - https://youtu.be/WPOAQHpkz7I

2 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

Yes. There was a lot of cause and effect centered around people making bad or selfish choices that would then come back to bite them in the ass in some roundabout way.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Everything was tied together. Season four really nailed it. The whole Joe devola thing was perfectly written.. Elaine going out with his doctor and he's off his meds stalking Kramer because he found out he wasn't invited to his party, and after trading a helmet to Newman he gets kicked.. Everything meshes so well in every episode. I think it was probably because of Lloyd Braun.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

The way the episode where Kramer is golfing at the beach, George is pretending to be a marine biologist and it all ties together at the end when George is telling his story is the perfect episode and example of all the things tying together. When George whips out the ball it wraps it all up in the funniest way possible. The sea was angry that day….

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I always thought of them as aspects of Larry David's personality (or ones he perceives as his). Jerry is vanity, Kramer is impulsivity (and creativity?), George is Laziness, Elaine is his neurosis. Ive watched too much Seinfeld.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

If I remember correctly George is just 100% meant to be Larry David.

I've always said, Seinfeld paved the road for Always Sunny. Now, the gang just needs to end up in prison too.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I thought most people hated the Seinfeld finale. Yes it was an opportunity to call back to good times, but nobody watched the show to watch them get some final comeuppance. Felt a bit contrived and unnatural to the vibe of the show. And it's the same for Always Sunny, they regularly suffer for their own bad choices anyway...I'd rather an ending that implies they go on causing mayhem into the foreseeable future.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You're probably right that most people hated the finale when the show aired. I watched Seinfeld as an adult in the recent years, and I actually didn't mind the finale. I thought it was a hilarious twist - they were terrible people! As far as It's Always Sunny, I was mostly kidding that they should end up with the same finale. Although out of the two shows, Sunny's group really should end up in jail lol.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I think it might be funnier if they all go on trial for something but then end up weaseling out of it, to everyone's horror, and they do a big "in your face" celebration, but then find out that the fact that they walked means they have to watch their backs forever. Possibly related to some people Luther MacDonald knows from prison, or even Luther himself.

I feel like you should probably phrase that in the reverse, but yeah.

It will be a late Never Cloudy in that respect.

That doesn’t make it either ok or even a good show.

Correct, just intentionally having a cast who make bad decisions doesn't make it a good show. However, in this case, independently of that fact, it was also a good show.

Correct. Seinfeld will never be a hit.

It's just like reality tv. The viewers love watching terrible people.

The writing on Scienfield was brilliant. Compare it to the other 90s laugh-track sitcom tripe it was competing with.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh, I'll disagree. It's a little dependent on the time, but no more than most other sitcoms. But I think, even today, Seinfeld writing really holds up. It's just ridiculous enough to highlight the decision making processes of the cast without making it unbelievable, and you have to pay attention to notice how messed up they really are.

Most great sitcoms are like that. The Office, Fawlty Towers.. they almost need to be lousy people for you to be able to laugh at them.

Elaine deciding who was "spongeworthy" was pretty freaking wild for american broadcast tv at the time.

As was The Contest.

Not since lunch

Which is one of the core reasons why I never liked the show: they are horrible people. I'm not interested in watching a show centered around absolute POSs. Same thing with Friends, all horrible people (except Phoebe.)

Both shows were garbage

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 6

Can you elaborate on why each character was a horrible person? I had considered them all caring, supportive, and always well intentioned. Obviously each one of them had character flaws, but I also saw every character grow out of them, and/or regret their mistakes. ...I'm genuinely open to hearing a more critical perspective of them, but I need help understanding your conclusion.

Friends they're a little less horrible in one sense because they actually need each other (less privileged than the seinfeld characters) and show a lot of loyalty to each other

imo

This I agree on. The characters on friends have redeemable traits that I just can't apply to Seinfeld.

I guess you wouldn't like always sunny though. Shame, because it's some of the most entertaining television I've ever seen in my life.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Totally agree, and I love that show. I go into detail as to what i think the difference is in other comments.

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's why i *loved* the show. I enjoyed seeing bad things happen to bad people. (That's also why the finale was so perfect).

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But nothing bad happened to them until the last episode. In fact they were actively rewarded for it. Even on the last episode, Jerry was on his way to finally shoot the pilot for his show or some shit like that. Had they literally not been at the wrong place at the wrong time, nothing bad would have happened to them at all!

Joey was dim and a bit of a misogynist but a genuinely good person.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Joey was also a total player with total disregard for the emotion of the girls he nabbed.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thus my misogyny comment

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What? Phoebe was the worst. Constantly using her dead mother to get away with shit.

2 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

Yeah, she only looks good in contrast to her friends and twin sister, Ursula.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Okay so they were all horrible then.

What are your thoughts on It’s always Sunny in Philly, because that show has the exact same premise albeit more on the nose

2 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

I love it, but hear me out before calling me a hypocrite (even though I still kinda am one). Unlike in Seinfeld or Friends, the characters in IASIP are totally indefensible and ALWAYS get their comeuppance. In Seinfeld and Friends they never lose and actively get rewarded for their shitty behaviour. The IASIP crew always ends up losing and are the clear losers. The lesson is literally and quite clearly "don't be these idiots".

2 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 7

What do you mean? They literally went to jail at the end, all of them. They were put on trial and their past came back to bite them in the ass.

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 3

2- To add to that, the Seinfeld crew would have also totally gotten away with all of their shittiness had they literally not been at the wrong place at the wrong time. If they are anywhere else on the planet than watching a car get stolen in a good samaritin they would have gotten away with it. At no point in time when you are watching IASIP do you ever feel like they are going to get away with it. Half the fun of watching it is to find out how it's all going to blow up in their face.

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

There's a very LARGE difference between waiting 9 seasons to see any repercussions for their actions, and literally meeting the consequences of their actions on every episode. I mean Seinfeld waited until THE VERY LAST EPISODE to punish them. That still leaves 9 years of watching them get away with shitty behaviour on a weekly basis. If you never heard of the last episode the you'd be justified in thinking that they got away with every miserable action. You can't make that mistake with IASIP.
