What the Pythagorean Theorem is really trying to show you

Solving Pascal triangles

If you’re studying trig, you better get pretty comfortable with circles.

Here’s how you solve logarithms

Converting a function from Cartesian to Polar coordinates

Ellipse

Use FOIL to easily multiply binomials

Exterior angles of polygons will ALWAYS add up to 360 degrees

If an arc of a circle is the same length as its radius, the resulting angle is one radian

Use this trick so you don’t get mixed up when doing matrix transpositions

Tangent lines

I regret not being interested in math in highschool.

The "trick" for transposing a matrix is just... how you transpose a matrix? What?

Soh-Cah-Toa. Some Old Horses Can Always Hear The Owners Approach.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's not "solving" Pascal's triangle, that's creating it. The rest are definitions and things you learn in a basic trig course.

MATHS? MUST TERMINATE HERETIC!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sin(0) is 0 and cos(0) is 1. It's been over 10 years and I still remember it because my teacher was a hard ass.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You lost me at "Make"

@OP Use descriptions. They are your friend. Your third image's title got cut off.

#1 am I crazy, and/or does B squared not look all that square?

I think the lighting is poor, making the shadows distort perspective.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

But what do I rea...?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

lly really want?

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

That ellipse thing isn't helpful at all. It doesn't tell you anything. Those lines vary in length.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's one piece of string. You push your pen into the string to keep it taught then move around to draw an ellipse.

Can someone explain the logarithm one? As far as I can tell they're arbitrarily putting up six fingers

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

ditto

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it just me or some of these are actually complicating the matter? These are simple maths

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

How does Pascal's triangle need solving?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's like Rubik's Cube.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Holy shit like 90% of this is relevant or would have been relevant last year

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TIL my boner is mathematical!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That sin-cosine explainer would be a LOT easier for people to follow in 2 dimensions. Just saying.

10 years ago | Likes 123 Dislikes 1

I don't even get what it's trying to show and I've got trig fresh in my brain.

10 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 2

But do you got parametrics?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's trying to show the same thing as the other sin/cos gif. It's just showing the relationship between circles and sin/cos functions.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Most trig classes never really goes into functions of more than one variable , which that animation is. I didn't see functions like that..

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its crazy important in 3D when you work with complex numbers

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Until multivariable calculus. The helix there can be described parametrically by the equations x=rcos(theta), y=rsin(theta), and z=b(theta)

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Useful when solving triple integrals, useless otherwise

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That helps... /s

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 3

Can someone explain to me how the logarithm one works? What's he doing with his hands that gives the answer??

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

log_2(64) is a short hand way of saying "How many times do I need multiply 2 by itself to get 64?" 2^6 = 64 so log_2(64) = 6

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nope. Still makes no sense to me. :-/ I'm incredibly bad at math.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

You're not alone. I used to be better at this kind of stuff. Maybe too much imgur.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are gifs, not teachers. Each of these requires explanation or prior knowledge. You're not bad at math.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tbf these are all pretty shit, without explanation they're mostly useless.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Some of these are useless, some are good, but you need to spend a bit of time figuring math out,it will often not be immediately obvious.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually remembered the FOIL before the gif played. I feel good for some reason

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

False. Did not make mathings "more easy"

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

but can you tell me why the fuck john wants 30 apples and 20 oranges?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I think these are all not actually helpful for making things easier to understand... except for the Pythagorean one, that one is creative.

10 years ago | Likes 51 Dislikes 3

A lot of people probably never think about how sin and cos relate to circles ( i.e. "sin and cos are those triangle things right?")

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I actually thought that one was the most useless. #8 is, however, invaluable, it explains all the signs and values of trig.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Whatever floats ur boat. I like to draw a triangle in a centralized unit circle, to me that's intuitive. Pythagorean one gives insight

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

she is just so satisfied with herself for a split second at the end

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He is just counting on his hands the answer to the log. I was looking forever to figure out the shortcut.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

can you explain it? didn't get it

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So the question was log base 2 of 64 is equal to ?. This is the exact same thing as asking what power of 2 will give you 64.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wouldn't that be 8 though and not 6?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, 2x2x2 is 8 and 8^2 is 64. To me that's the short cut

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the definition of radian, not some amazing coincidence. A radian is the angle that cuts an arc the size of the radius.

10 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 1

I was thinking the same thing. "The trick is just showing me the actual definition of a radian???"

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I don't think it is generally taught or explained as such.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I just don't understand why it is too hard for students to grasp.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Fairly certain the third image is an visual aid to understand the polarization of light, X and Y are electromagnetic wave propogating at (1/

Favorited because I'm 30 and my oldest is 12. I don't understand his math homework already. Because I'm a fucking troglodyte.

10 years ago | Likes 658 Dislikes 3

Osama?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I'm a decade and a half older than you, and my daughter's the same age. We're both shitty with math but at least she gets tutoring

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Troglodytes are the future, if you had your first child at 18...

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

This is my greatest fucking fear. My kid is 3. Our school district went common core a couple years go. I'm so boned on this.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Up Voted for for being a cave dwelling humanoid!

Hey, I'm 16. If you ever need help with something (or rather, your son does) I'd be more than happy to help.

Theres more than one 16 year old on this site? Theres dozens of us!

Get on Kahnacademy.com free lessons will videos where they work through the problems and can test your understanding. Many subjects covered.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

THIS! *Khanacademy, and the exercises are really where it's at. The videos are useful, too, but guided practice will help the most.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Khan academy is fucking garbage tbh the videos, at least for geometry are garbage. The exercises are only good if you've been taught first 1

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We've been using it for "individualized learning" and usually have to start without teaching, and then the teacher wonders why we're failing

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Math in general can feel really shitty when you're struggling. It sucks that your teacher isn't supporting you. Don't give up!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You will no longer be able to help him after algebra, trust me I'm a calculus student, but A for effort!

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

it's just a matter of pruning. people that don't use this information regularly forget it, and that's okay.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I know, the school systems is terrible. Common core is hard and makes me feel stupid so it must be stupid.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You fucking polynigmion.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

sounds like an extinct prehistoric species lol

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

OH IT IS. nvm

Troglodyte is anyone that lives in a cave.

misread as TRIGlodyte.

And kids wonder when they'll ever need math.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I successfully cheated my way through HS math so my kids are getting no help past 9th grade.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My younger brothers (6th) are learning about matrices....

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Damn, that's awesome! American public schooling?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

American Private, but still!

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nice. The private schooling has always been leagues ahead of public sadly. I remember the undergraduate days, they were well prepared

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah.... It kinda sucks....

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I just got mine from Ikea. I wish I knew more about them before I bought one.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I remember learning what matrices were when I was young, and how to add them, not much else though. I hated linear algebra last semester.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I loved linear algebra. Makes solving systems of equations soooooooooooo easy :D

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but they are learning computer graphics based of of them and shit

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

****Off of them

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, looking at older games is like looking at a huge matrix

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah it's almost weird with today's graphics

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Never thought you'd say "back in my day" at 30, did you? DID YOU? Trust me, you'll say all the things your parents did.

10 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

*SOB* I make their facial expressions that I hated so much too!!!!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Well I'm a 30 year old father of a 12 year old. I hope he chooses a different path ;)

10 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

Well if you're helping him with math homework you can't be doing that badly as a father.

10 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Some people realize that stupid choices are stupid. Others teach their children to make those same stupid choices. Seen it far too often.
