‘Leap of faith’: How this insane softball slide came to be

Kasey McCravey described herself as an unorthodox player, but said she even surprised herself with the move. Her acrobatics earned the Black Knights a 3-1 win over Lehigh. “I’m a little bit smaller, so I didn’t really want to run into her,” Kasey McCravey told “Fox & Friends,” when asked what went through her mind in the moment.

What a fucking champ

As a Brit, I am dead impressed by all of this.

That's a long neck for a human.

As a Brit, I am dead impressed by all of this.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have absolutely no idea of what's going on.

"Ah, I wish I could be part of the celebration, stupid at bat, why do I have to be next in the lineup?"

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Brotip: Looking at nr.14 will make you sad

Rolled a 20 on her Tumble check.

9 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

An the catcher a Nat 1 on her touch attack with the ball

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

lets not ignore that outstanding throw from the center fielder tho

Ump was like wth...shit safe

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 5

Took you 15 years to do it in Football

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

was she technically out of the baseline?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No. You have some wiggle room on the horizontal movement to avoid a tag. No rules about vertical.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That Center Fielder made a spot on throw... very nice

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

and the crowd goes mild

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Catcher should have stood on top of the base. She'd have had the higher ground. One does not simply jump over someone with the high ground.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I like the girl that tries to celebrate with here and just gets ignored lol

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Hey I know this girl. She lived in my hallway last year before she graduated

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

What has this country come to? People can't even afford room and board anymore so they just get the board.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

....we went to the same university

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was a joke since you said she lived in the hallway...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ah. Well, I'm drunk as fuck.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What? not even remotely new.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Meh. Needs more fanfare. Look at Chris Coghlan https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=odD_6lq9tQA

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

I hate the Cardinals, but Coghlan missed third. Still an awesome slide.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was at the game and remember screaming something along the lines of "no NO NOOOoooo wtf?!!!!"

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want to know where the pitcher is going, and why.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

She's going to backup the catcher in case there is an errant throw by an outfielder or missed ball by the catcher.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

For a play at the plate, the pitcher automatically moves to backup the catcher

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Ah, thank you

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Nice play/throw by centerfielder, actually nice play by catcher waiting for the ball while blocking the plate.

9 years ago | Likes 69 Dislikes 0

Also props to the catcher for shrugging it off and immediately moving on. A lot of players lose it after a solid play goes south.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Is that legal? She had no way of getting to the plate while the catcher sat on the base. I don't know the rules.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If the catcher is making a play, yes, she can block the plate. Catchers are encouraged to do so.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

So the runner's only choice is to charge through them? Or is there some trick to it?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nope, that is correct. Go through the catcher and hope to knock the ball loose, or go over the catcher like this runner did.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Honestly, it's a fantastic play all around. Pitch was ok, hit was perfectly timed, great throw from center field, good fake by the pitcher//

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

//good positioning by the catcher, and solid move going over the top by the runner even if it is unorthodox.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

...they way they ignored that bitch, #14.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

She's outstanding in her field.

9 years ago | Likes 982 Dislikes 11

She's clearly going home, not out standing in the field.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like a scarecrow.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

He deserved that promotion.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Truly above the competition

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Nah, looks like she made it home nice and safe in time for dinner.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

She gave them the old razzle dazzle!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And outrunning and outjumping in her field.

9 years ago | Likes 75 Dislikes 0

I'd hardly say she was standing, but you did and I respect that.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In baseball she would have been out for jumping over a player

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 14

When was this made a rule? I umpired for years and don't remember anything about jumping being in the handbook.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

A Blue Jay pulled a similar move about a month ago - SAFE!!!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Sometimes they let it slide cause it's a cool play, but technically in the rules it's an out

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

lol no

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Really? Played through highschool and didn't go in depth enough lol

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Always amazes me how short women's softball fields are. Not knocking them but it just surprises me, b/c they're amazing athletes.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Honestly it's the damn ball...that's why even men's leagues have small fields- you're just not gonna get a lot of distance like a baseball

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yep true. I play in a rec co-ed slow-pitch league but our fields are much larger than college women's fast pitch fields.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And yes, I miss the ease of throwing a baseball hard. Have to throw my damn arm out to get speed on a softball throw :)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What about that ball kick ? That was pretty nifty too.

9 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 19

Oh shit...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

Looks like she lifts her foot to prevent hitting it.

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

All she did was move her leg out of the way....

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Yeah it looked to me like she flicked it on with her heel but I guess not

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Huh?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Pitcher does a little hop.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

1st baseman. Pitcher goes to backup the catcher once the ball goes to the outfield

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She pulls her leg out of the way, looks like.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I find it's a bit more impressive throwing a steroidal baseball at 80+ mph than a regular baseball at 90+. Especially w/the awkward pitch.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 10

Softball is garbage. The field is small. The batter reaches way to often on a grounder to the left side of the infield. Because its only 60'

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

Ah man I wanna be a girl... no wait. No I dont.. running with boobs

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

You know the softball pitch is how our arms are supposed to move. The baseball pitch goes against how our arms are supposed to work

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 5

This person doesn't know much about baseball/softball

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

Yeah.. My arm can do both.

What's the difference between baseball and softball?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Lesbians. (Not that there's anything wrong with that)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 4

Softball is pitched underhand. Softball has shorter distances between bases. And softball is played with metal bats. Baseball is wood.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I can't throw to save my life. But underhand looks so unnatural of a technique.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Baseball bat is smaller but you can use wood or metal, doesn't matter. Also the softball ball is bigger

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

True--College and under can use wood or metal bats. Professional baseball is exclusively wood bats.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The baseball is certainly not wood. But it is smaller.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

made me burst out laughing, also @HollyBabycakes ...great explanation on the difference, never thought about it before

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh I know hah. We live in same building and I always love when he wears his Superman hat before games lol.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Just to note, the catcher ducks forward to counter being knocked over. This puts him even more off guard for the jump over his head

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

https://youtu.be/skcQ2gj40lE source. Home plate collisions are essentially illegal now, Yadi bent over to pick the ball not to brace for hit

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

He was picking the ball, Cogs jumped because it was the only option to avoid collision with Yadier. Cogs wasn't gonna run into him

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Jesus who throws the bat forwards?

9 years ago | Likes 700 Dislikes 18

I would guess it helps her correct her momentum towards the base after her swing.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

I got a technical out for doing that in pee wee league. I was flinging it way too ahrd.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Surely better to throw it where you can see it than blindly fling it at the player behind

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Former umpires. Supposed to be outside the base lines. To prevent tripping and injury.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

She threw the but forward to keep it out of the way for the play at home. The bat being in front of the plate is much less dangerous.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Well, in rounders you go out if you throw it backwards.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Had a new guy play on my team last week. He almost made it to 1st with the bat in hand so it could've been worse

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

An unorthodox player, did you not even read the description?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 4

Except the unorthodox player was the base runner not the hitter.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Damn, I guess you're right on that one.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I always threw it with the swing

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I know, right? I mean, you're supposed to take it with you to whack the first baseman, duh.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you happen to make it this far in the comments and HAVEN'T seen this movie, I recommend you go watch it damn near immediately

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

What movie is this?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exactly, and without that, the long standing tradition of the first baseman throwing the bat to a small child in the stands would never work

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

In bird culture that is considered a dick move

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

A lefty?

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Pedro Cerano carried his around the bases after his home run

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

He did it himself!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hats. For bats.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

hey bartender! Jobu needs a refill!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You are right...not sure the exact rule, but would think its possible to be called out for that...

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 4

Certainly can be ejected from the game if ump thinks it was intentional

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Interference would be called if the bat prevented a defensive player from making a play.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I used to ump little league...never saw that happen...

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

To be honest, I had to look it up for the same reason. Never saw it happen.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It would have to be intentional. Check out the last out of Roy Halladay's playoff no-hitter.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah, a judgement call by the Ump. Normally seen in a bunt but your example was perfect.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Someone trying to trip the pitcher?

9 years ago | Likes 210 Dislikes 2

Devious little minx.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Feel like it should be illegal. I know it was in little league when I played because it was a tripping hazard for the other kids.

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 1

Not technically illegal but if it interferes with a defensive player making a play, interference will be called. Intentional or not.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Man that would feel so shitty if your thrown bat caused the pitcher to roll their ankle.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Bunch of guys in baseball do it too. My best guess is that if the ball hits the bat after a throw, it's a dead ball and helps the offense.

9 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

A dead ball doesn't help the offense as no runners may advance in that situation.

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

True, but they get the base they are going to if they are more than a certain distance down the baseline, and no more outs can be recorded.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

That's still a poor strategy seeing how the chances of that happening are so slim and you could actually injure someone.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In a bunt situation, if the ball hits the bat in fair territory, and the ump rules that it was not intentional, the ball is live (1/2)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

There was a rule when I played softball that if you threw your bat back & it hit the fence you were out. They taught us to throw forward.

9 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 2

Wow so dumb. Just set it down like anyone else.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Maybe i'm crazy, but I thought you just drop it after the hit?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Thank you for an actual answer.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

We were taught the crouch and set it down, throwing anywhere got us out.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

The rule exists to teach younger players to safely release the bat b/c throwing it hard enough to hit a fence 20 feet away could kill people

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I played softball and can confirm this rule as I did that once without knowing the rule and almost got thrown out.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you know why? What the thinking behind that rule is?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Teaches players to release the bat with control since throwing it hard enough to hit a fence 20 feet away could seriously hurt someone.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was a catcher and was hit several times. People try to throw to the side but have no control and fling it backwards

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the dumbest fucking rule ever

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

It's because the ump and catcher get hit. I was a catcher and got hit several times from people throwing bats back trying to hit the fence

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You cant take a step or two and throw it to the side like in baseball? what the hell?

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 3

Every bit of time counts. I've hit the ball right to the first baseman a few steps from his plate and still beat him there.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 5

Javelin throw, at first base, or flip it at the third baseman if there's a runner on 2nd.

9 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

Getting the bat back in front of you and under control to then drop it wastes time. I always just let go as it slowed down through the swing

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Do you play baseball or softball? Baseball players throw it to the side (or should) at every level.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
