It's a flaw in the battle logic. It required a non-trivial change to fix, so some players who reported it are now upset with the results.

It can be a bit complicated, but making it friendlier to newbies is a huge dev focus atm. We have a training galaxy with mentors to help.

The numbers are a bit odd atm cause we're near a reset, but it's split into isolated galaxies. A single player can have multiple empires.
