I had dropped out my Senior year knowing I was a few classes short of actually graduating. A counselor convinced me to return and take a G.E.D. Course. I did and passed, but not actually graduating has embarrassed me my entire life.
My children have all graduated from College, one with a Masters Degree. I have always emphasized the importance of Education , just not for the reasons they believe .

You lived. You loved. You laughed. You raised family. You done good.
astrangeparrot
I like what you got, GOOD JOB!
zma123456
On a side note, from your username it is so clear that you are over 55
Vorcono
My dad dropped out two months into grade 10, never "graduated", so consider yourself anything but a failure. You're an inspiration.
crazybeardguy
My mom just passed and I found so much "context" in her letters and papers that would have made great and inspiring discussions. Tell them.
JoelJoestar
Who cares? You've lived long and prospered; you've already won at life.
Xiseria
Education's important. Specific degrees, such as a GED, are not. You obviously didn't need it if you can teach yourself what you need.
hairtriggercunt
None of their business OP. You did your job.
papertiger09
Right? your kids don't need to know everything about you.
ZombieHugsAreBestHugs
Yet you spell better than most on the internet. Kudos.
camlyn2
Think about it, if you hadn't dropped out, maybe you wouldn't have raised your kids to achieve so highly.
HalloIamherenow
It's just a piece of paper dude, surely you accomplished more than most to raise highly educated kids.
Foxhack
My dad didn't even graduate grade school. He had to work to support his mother and his siblings. So no, don't feel ashamed.
TECHNICALLYC0RRECT
Sitting in a mini plastic tent until you get heatstroke is overrated @OP. Trust me.
TinFoilHatting
There is nothing to be ashamed of , clearly you have done right by yourself and your children.
ShuBaBaDoMaMaMama
Thank you, I am very proud is their accomplishments
CatShitTacos
aye parenting done right- good job on those kids- that's a hell of an achievement right there.
ShuBaBaDoMaMaMama
Thank you so much !
supercalifragilisticexpealidocious15
Different time, different economic structure. I tell this repeatedly to one of my loved ones.
Affray
My dad dropped out in grade ten and is better at math than I am. I made dean's list for cabinetmaking in college which is fairly math heavy.
CatzEyes93
They wont care. Honest. They wont. If anything they will be proud that you got your GED.
cogs
59 years & 9 months here, dropped out 4 months shy of graduation. Didn't regret it for a second, and never ashamed of it.
RecompostedSapiens
My wife dropped out, and I know it bothers her a lot. She's super intelligent, skilled, and hardworking.. I hope she can get past it.
MusculusSternocleidomastoideus
Hope so too. And if she can't, it is certainly possible to take classes in night school etc :)
Godzhev
You've managed to raise your kids and all of them graduated and one with a masters?! No one can look down on you, you've done amazingly!
wouldyoulikesomesausages
That's parenting done right.
ThePandagator
They probably aren't the type of parent to take credit for their kid's achievements. Harder to let go knowing you could've done better too
Ziexoro
Agreed! You basically shit out or ejaculated a master's degree.
Mjrdrous
Don't feel bad at all. I did about the same thing. Picked up my GED and got a Bachelor's in Computer Science... 1/2
Mjrdrous
Got into a Business Analyst role as of a couple months ago... But still it's really awkward to tell anyone about the GED... 2/3
Mjrdrous
I mean, anyone I tell is always so surprised. Like a, "I thought only idiots got GEDs," when that's not true at all...
TheGreatAnhey
One of my mentors got a masters degree before his diploma
Darkivan64
Son of a single mother over here, she didn't finished her high school, and you know? I am so blessed with all the love and work done by (1/2)
Darkivan64
Her, I have never looked down on her, and if I did, I am pretty sure I punched myself. My father passed away, yet I see her as both (2/3)
Darkivan64
My mom and dad, and I feel blessed every day,i hope your sons see you the same way, and that they show it too.
CaptainGay
I want to believe an almost 60 year old uses IMGUR.
Rmajere
Yeah op is full of it

lurkingcabbage
You'd be surprised at how old people can be here.
ShuBaBaDoMaMaMama
It's true. Born in 1956
DarthSuraTheSavage
Monolith42
44 here, come here all the time to see how much more I know than <35 ????
anatomyprincess
Did you lie about it and tell them you graduated? If not, let it go. Doesn't change who you are or what you've accomplished.
ShuBaBaDoMaMaMama
I never actually lied about it. It was more in the context of what year did I graduate , to which I would respond with the year I got my GED
kepler20c
Don't let it bother you man, shit you done good son. People think a piece of paper defines an education, it doesn't, some of the dumbest
kepler20c
mother fuckers I know are the most highly educated ones. If it really bothers you get some community college in till you at least get an AS
anatomyprincess
Tell them. They should be proud that you earned your GED and persevered. I am proud of you and I don't even know you! Take care
arguss
So, you had almost all the actual classes done, AND you got a GED? All you're missing is the walk, which plenty of actual grads don't do.
RincewindTVD
That seems to say a lot about your education system that you consider the walk at the end to be a valuable part of the education...
masonicmasonry
I didn't even walk after graduating college! It got rained out halfway through commencement.
whattasteslikepurple
And at my highschool, all seniors, whether they passed or not, get to do the walk, cheapening it for the people who earned it. It was lame.
Incantanto
In England you doon't get any graduation ceremonies until you've done a degree. He's just sympathising with other countries
BadDecisionDinosaur
Oh its horrible. Waiting 4+ hours in a crowded auditorium to walk across a stage for 3 secs for smtg you could just get in the mail later.
Polarbit
It's pretty sweet when you win half of the scholarships though.
jtb1313
It is more for your mom than it is for you, my mom is pissed that my brother didn't walk
abdaman98
Ur kinda right about that but seeing your parent/teachers proud of u makes that day memorable (srry i just graduated hs)
callmethelizardqueen
My kid's school solved the crowded problem: it was $150 just to walk and another $120 for tee cap & gown.
cavemans
They dont even give iut the real diploma anymore. Just an wmpty diploma cover.
callmethelizardqueen
My son got his diploma
cavemans
They hokd it hostage here. If you try to goof off they dont allow you to have it. You have to come a few days after walking to get it.
