Honestly, a picture of me this close up wouldn’t look any better. I don’t have any fillers or botox or anything, but I’m 45. I have pores and wrinkles. My skin is textured. The difference between these people and me isn’t evident in a photo. The difference is that I don’t tell easily disprovable lies for fun or profit.

A lot of it is lighting as well. Beauty portraiture often has a light above and another below the subject and they're usually large, soft light sources that are close to the subject. This helps to "fill in" a lot of wrinkles etc.
Personally, hats off to the tog for his choice in lighting and no retouching.

It's not that bad. That's a very high resolution camera which is bound to pick up imperfections (especially when makeup creates a crinkly layer), and the artificial lighting is bound to amplify it. It's not too surprising given her age and WHAT THE FUCK SHE'S 28??

A lot of celebrity coverage isn't really journalism, but promotional puff pieces meant to present the celebrity in a good light. If you don't present them well, you're not going to get more celebrities agreeing to do a piece for your paper/magazine. This applies not just to the photos, but the writing as well. it's clear VF did not give a fuck about being welcomed back to cover these assholes again.

Magazines retouch celebrities for their own gain often too - especially if their women - as hot women sell issues. I know Jameela Jamil has talked a lot about images of her being retouched without her approval/knowledge and nowadays she only agrees to photo shoots on the premise that nothing will be retouched. She’s had to fight for her right to be shown just as she is.
