"The arrival of the Götheborg on the scene was rapid and surprising, as we did not expect to see a merchant ship from the East India Company of the 18th-century. This moment was very strange, and we wondered if we were dreaming. Where were we? What time period was it?"

At first you laugh but then you're made part of the crew and swabbing the deck.

The whole time the two guys in the 8m sailboat were transmitting, "we're in an 8-meter sailboat, don't tow us too fast or our boat will break." "Don't worry, we're a 50-meter sailboat, you'll be fine" "What do you mean 50-meter sailboat- oh"

My coworkers I am starting a business with want to be able to purchase yachts when they make enough money. I told them my yacht would be a 24 broadside cannon Man-o-War.

I knew nothing good would come of pulling an all weekender on sea of thieves …

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Same. My first thought after seeing that was run since I just spent all weekend in a sloop.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Imagine sinking in the middle of an ocean and the next thing you see is a gosh darn PIRATE GALLEON that looks to be straight out of Davy Jones's locker appear on the horizon

2 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Depending on era, a merchantship of one of the East India Companies could easily be dubbed a pirate ship, with little exaggeration. The Swedish East India Company was, perhaps, not the most brutal example, but that was presumably more for lack of opportunity.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Good point but my counter is. They're sinking and it's looks close enough to a pirate ship that they wouldn't take time to analyze it because... sinking.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I mean, they probably had plenty of time while it was (slowly) pulling up to wonder if they'd been sucked back through time and were about to have a Unique Experience.

"Dear commander and crew of the Götheborg, your kindness, and generosity have shown that your ship is much more than just a boat. It embodies the noblest values of the sea, and we are honored to have had the chance to cross your path and benefit from your help." I'm a sucker for such letters.

It's all fun until they start pulling out the canons

That is one pretty ship

Gorgeous ship! Only thing missing are the gun ports :)

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Apparently it has four cannons on each side

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Indeed; as for gun ports they're merely closed at sea

I was lucky enough to see it in person when I was in Venice last year. We came around the corner on a water bus and I was like I know that ship!

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

We are hear to rescue you. Do not resist

2 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

They do have ten cannons.

What did you say? I couldn't here you.

I feel like that would be the seaboner of any seafaring person

There was that person whose distress call got answered by Leonardo De Caprio... you're stranded and Leo rocks up in his yacht.

I retired from a lifetime of shipboard life. If it’s not bad weather, I’m cool if this shows up. If it’s shit weather, fuck that.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They were rescuing another sailing vessel so highly likely they were impressed

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thank you for the link to the article. I sent the link to my husband and will have to deal with his seaboner later

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I wish you both a merry bon voyage! Godspeed funny soap maker ❤️

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There were seamen seeing other seamen with seaboners dripping with semen.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Where?! For research and science...

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As someone who'd love to walk around on the deck of a ship like that, just to experience that environment, I very much understand the meaning of seaboner in this context.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It is possible to do that. It is anchored in Gothenburg Sweden at the moment and you can get a tour of the ship for about 15$. I went there just last week.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've been lucky enough to stroll around both HMS Victory and USS Constitution. Victory in particular, being much larger, is spectacular.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(Constitution is fantastic too, if you're near Boston go check it out)

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It also scares any tax payer that sees it, it bleeds money every time it sets sail, between 2010-2016 65 million swedish kr, and by 2016 the whole project was up at a 300 mil cost, the ship is basically like having a king, a very expensive mascot.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 6

Is it the crew or maintenance that costs so much? How did they run those bastards back in the day or is inflation just that our of control?

2 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Back in the day that class of ship would set sail with and come back with lots of expensive goods to make the journey worth it, and ye inflation on top of crew and maintenence on a big wooden ship ads up pretty quickly.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

It's mostly maintenance. These ships require specific wood that takes much longer to grow than is needed for smaller wooden boats. Also wood being, ya know, wood, it deteriorates a lot faster than steel. They ran them back in the day by carrying mostly expensive cargo with a high profit margin. But boats back then were also so expensive that pirates usually could just threaten to destroy a boat and most merchants would give up their cargo instead of losing the boat.

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Merchants mostly gave up because they didn't own the boat, and not giving up meant the pirates would kill them. And the pirates usually had ~3-4 times the crew, so any boarding action would go poorly for the merchants. There was more than one case of crew mutiny when the captain decided to fight.

It absolutely needs a glow-in-the-dark sparkly paint job so it comes out of the fog like a freaking ghost ship.

2 years ago | Likes 256 Dislikes 3

The crew would be desperately looking for anything to use as a costume. Pretend you're lost in time or a ghost ship.

Has a pretty sweet/Swede paint job already, but would be neat; better image, credit @JarJarDrinks

God, the moment I started watching this the Pirates of the Caribbean theme started playing in my head.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder what kind of motor they put on her. She's making good headway for having all the sails furled.

wait,,, it's moving without the sails being down. That's disappointing. I thought this was a replica, not a fishing boat in a cool frock.

Why can't billionaires have some class and start rolling around in these?

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

because billionaires have a severe lack of creativity and want the "I'm a billionaire" aesthetic instead of actually doing whatever

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

They used to. They er... did a lot of commerce with these...

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My friend is curious about how you navigate like that without sails and without a motor?

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Tug boat is an option

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

My suspicion is that they have a motor.

2 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

It has a motor. https://www.gotheborg.se/about-gotheborg/about-the-ship/#tab--technology

2 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This one does have a motor. The normal way to get a big rigger like this up a channel or into a dock is to tow it. Back in the day, it would have carried its own boats for this purpose, but most places it could dock would have had their own teams of rowers to assist.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Thank you for that explanation. I was wondering how they got up a channel to a port if they had to back then.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is like everyone on the ship hanging off the masts?

2 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

You couldn’t get me NOT to if I had that opportunity, I bet the ones who had to stay on or below deck were jealous.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Publicity. Since they don’t appear to be preparing the sails (which makes sense due to them being in a tight channel and unbatenning them can cause manoeuvrability issues). In general, older vessels tend to do things like this. As an owner of an early 1900s Hardin pattern, people really love when you go out of the way to be friendly on a sailing class vessel because they’re fairly rare in action.

2 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Everyone else here is wrong, every sailor had a position, and their family knew what their position on the mast was, so you could see if your kid was coming home or not before you made it to the dock.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That view must be incredible from there. How many people get to cross under Tower Bridge with that view, in this century.
