so Christianity is a lot like Wrestling, everyone knows it is fake, but the people into it don't like it when anyone points out that it is just a bunch of silly bullshit old people made up
That's what this RW SCOTUS is doing. They're not even privileging religion in general, bc they ruled a few years ago that a Muslim prisoner could not have an imam at his execution even though Christians could have a pastor. They are privileging particular sects of Christianity over the rest of us, e.g., that nutty TX judge killed federal birth control for minors in TX bc one "Christian" dad said its mere existence threatened his rights as a [controlling creepy] Christian parent.
I know very few people who were raised atheist/agnostic/any-other-religion, but I wish I had more anecdata on how much they as kids might have been casually exposed to Christian practices and expected to follow along because I suspect it might be a lot. Like "in this house, we say grace before eating" or if you stayed overnight into a Sunday, you'd be dragged along with the family to church
We were raised Catholic and my mom was very devout til she died. I quit going to mass as a teen but my mom never gave me grief about it. I have always been grateful for that.
I hate this kind of over the top makeup, and like a sane person I just don't do it on myself. Whoever it makes them happy, they should be able to do it with no criticism from the idiots pretending to speak for any deity.
As I understand with drag queens it's actually a stylistic choice specific to their performance art. They only do themselves up like that when they perform; they don't go to a restaurant or the grocery store looking like that.
The over the top persona is what seperates drag from crossdressing entertainer, it's part of what drag is, there's also "Painting for the back row" that ensures everyone can see it regardless of where they're sat in the audience.
Makeup like this always immediately reminds me of Mimi from the Drew Carey show. I am pretty neutral to this look, I guess, but it makes me happy to see people expressing themselves in their appearance, even if it wouldn't fit my style.
Why? Why do you even take the time to say you hate it when really you just don't know shit about it. Why was it important for you to even mention you hate it. You should ask yourself that question. It might lead to difficult realisation about bias, prejudice and privilege. Don't get me wrong, you are allowed to not like something but sometimes it's ok to just shut up.
This is where I stand. Aesthetically, I find them really creepy and unsettling, but I will fight for their right to exist and to express themseves even if it makes me uncomfortable, because it's not fucking about me
I see everyone saying it's a stylistic choice, I know that and still think it's a ridiculous and hideous style. It has no bearing on their character whatsoever, and I don't give a damn what clothes they wear, and I appreciate the style of the clothing a lot more than the make-up. I think it actually hits the uncanny valley for me, their face looks so fake that it gives me the same feeling as bad CGI humans.
Trixie paints for the check cashing place down the street. It’s an extreme makeup. They’ve also gone on to say that they hate their face, so it could be why they’ve chosen to have this extreme makeup.
I support what they’re saying but the makeup is confusing. I can’t tell where the eyes are supposed to be, and the line above the jaw is strange. 100% more power to this drag queen, but I disagree with the fashion sense.
It's unsettling to me. But that might be what they were going for. Or not. I can have my opinion, but they can and should express themselves however they feel fit, and even if I don't understand it, I can support them for it. I've known I was gay since I was very young, and there are some in the community who would criticize me because I "pass" and don't bring it up or fly pride flags.
I am fascinated by it and wish I had the patience and talent to do it. Love Kim Chi's make up in the Expensive video and would do it a few times a year to go out if I could
Its not just~ stage make up (for sure PART of it is). I've been in plenty of performances and I have seen stage make up close first hand numerous times (caked one, overly dramatic, wild coloring, etc that looks 'normal' from afar). In terms of drag queens, a lot of it also comes down to a specific style they are going for. Its meant to be over the top, over the top is kinda what drag queens are known for, its one of the entertaining aspects of drag.
I'm not fond of your "like a sane person" addition to that comment. Can you give us your credentials as to how you can objectively classify yourself as "more sane" than those that chose to perform in drag?
I took it as "I am sane because I know not liking this means I simply do not do it, instead of demanding everyone else does not do it." implying the Christians who do not like drag are insane for insisting other people dress in a way they personally approve of.
I read it as: like a sane person, if I don’t like something then I just don’t do it. As opposed to religious looneys who don’t like something and decide to try and force other people to stop.
I would like to find the sources of those quotes… not because I don’t believe they’re real, but so I can effectively use them on those who wouldn’t believe they’re real
Sure, but also every single President has been a Christian. Not saying America is *officially* a Christian Nation or *should* be a Christian Nation, but...
People seem really riled up that you pointed out that an institutional preference for protestantism is a stain that hangs throughout American history, and most of our most shameful crimes come gilded by the words of the godbotherers.
The TL;DR of, "America has a massive historical bias towards Christians," is too much to hear for some people. Maybe the same people who think they're being persecuted by the godless liberals?
Question from the ignorant: if a guy has a drag persona but has no intrest in transitioning or anything beyond drag, should I call the person he or she?
This isnt probably the correct way but I go by how the person is presenting, if they correct me I change it to whatever they want. If it isn't obvious I just keep it neutral.
Check their pronouns, if you can't, but still want to be respectful, using a gender neutral term's your best bet. Most people are understanding if they see you're making an effort to respect people's personal identities.
Ultimately? Ask. Met some that prefer 'He' all across the board, some that prefer 'She' while 'in character', and one that was in a position where she couldn't transition female without getting cut out of a sizeable will, but could get away with crossdressing and/or drag queen stuff on the side as a 'hobby' and she prefer 'she/her' across the board when with trusted friends.
Safer bet is to call the character 'She' or 'They', most guys that do drag don't mind being refereed to as female in drag, same way a lot of crossplaying cosplayers don't mind being reffered to as their character when dressed up.
In situations like this with famous figures you can look up their social media and if its important to them it'll be prominently called out. In this case Trixie uses all pronouns so you're safe with whatever, but her website uses "her" when referring to the persona Trixie and "his" when referring to Brian Firkus, the performer.

If God is so great why are they supposed to be feared? Sounds like a dictator to me.
