There is a law firm in Colorado that is doing the “cast your family in the commercials” thing in 2024!
I see the ads on YouTube now and then, and they’re absolutely awful and just pure cringe, but I sort of love them, just because of the old school vibe.
YouTube. Old Christmas movies are hitting public domain now and some people even upload em with era-appropriate ads.. though if all ads make you violent (like me) there's adfree ones too.
In my mind, in the original Star Wars, when Vader is confronting Leia on her ship, there are powerball numbers scrolling across the bottom of the screen. Also, the first TMNT movie absolutely starts with the Pizza Hut ad with the baseball song.
"My prices are so crazy my family is having me committed! No seriously, here they come now with the straight jacket and thorazine! Before they wrap me up, let me show you this credenza for only $299.99!! A credenza for less than $300!?! That's why they're shipping me off! I'm craaaazy!"
I'll take that over what the local dealer had on TV as a kid. Just blazoned their name on the screen, and read it off three times. It's still in my head.
"Curtis Ryan Honda." "Curtis Ryan Honda." "CURtis Ryan Honda."
No, the only stuff licked forever on standard def were live action things shot on video. Pretty much everything else was shot on film and film has plenty of resolution. Hell in 60's even time shifted TV used a film camera pointed at a screen in a box because video tape didn't exist. So the only time anything from that era would ever by stuck at TV resolution is if it were live.
Only if the source material is video tape. But it’s not. Since The Great Pumpkin is animated, there’s most likely film somewhere. And that film can be rescanned for 4K equipment and look incredible.
A note for people not in the know: film has infinite resolution. It can be upscaled basically infinitely without losing quality - as long as you have the equipment to do so.
It does not have infinite resolution as once you zoom in close enough you will only see the individual silver grains that make up the physical medium. You can do a LOT with physical nitrile film but it's not some perfect thing with zero downsides.

On a CRT.

Uhhhh... no... I'm not nostalgic for shitty appointment tv viewing and obnoxious commercials.

For whatever reason, Charlie Brown irritates me tremendously and I go to some lengths to avoid it.

Run it through some post processing to add chromatic artifacts and blurring like how video game emulators do.

One of the key things I remember of the original Star Wars trilogy is the holiday Turtles ads because we taped it off (City)TV.

Nostalgia.

Because it was a sense of community, however tenuous. It exists less and less as everything is corporatized.
SnoopyDancing
bought all my favorite Peanuts and Holiday shows that are no longer aired except on "free Apple tv" or some other paid streaming - fuck them

Doesn't matter if they upscale it to 4k it's still 360i quality. Upscaling never makes it better.
AlmostClever
I have a 4k scan of it from a Blu-ray and it legitimately looks amazing. Same with the Christmas special.
Spudd86
Because it's not upscaled, it's a new scan of film.
bitemark
I have a copy that's in 1080p and it's nice enough that you can see the details of the painted sky backgrounds, so, good enough.

No. That's not how it work at all. They aren't feeding VHS tapes into a server to stream online
Amanda55andcows
unless they have really good source material to work with, that's exactly how it works

Disney+ has done this to a lot of their classic cartoons and they look almost new

Yep. It’s really wonderful to see. On a whim, I threw on Rescue Rangers a couple months ago and it was *gorgeous*.

Did anyone else grow up in a Hostess region and only learn that Zingers existed from those commercials?
DecentUsernameUnavailable
The only place to get zingers was in the local hospital vending machines. Otherwise hostess ruled.
