"But I want to do genocide."
SuitorShooter
He's supposedly the most powerful potential jedi, bound up in a prophecy to restore balance to the force, and you really think they're going to just let him leave?
RenaissanceFaireMan
So, "Destroy the Jedi Order" or "Be with Natalie Portman" = That's how we know he's evil....dumb...stupid...blind....a moron.
barnwolf
Wait, Anakin Skywalker is just King Henry VIII. The catholics(Jedi) wouldn't let him divorce(marry) so he forcefully replaced the catholics(Jedi) with the church of england(the empire).
zerovanity59
But he needed information to save her. He could only get that from the Jedi library if he were a Master or from Palpatine.
Mostlydeadpool
I always wondered about that. what does the jedi order do about people they find that are force sensitive but too old to start jedi training? they're functionally sorcerors, learning the force in their own way without a teacher. so it's going to be very individualized. Sadly with how EASY the dark side is, I would imagine most would end up being using at least a couple of the dark side powers.
MatrixDragon
Yes, but he wanted all the benefits and accolades while breaking all the rules. Rules like 'don't murder children'
LunaAtlas
He must be thick.
Bacxaber
They can take away your powers though. Source: KotoR2.
Cehmacc14
Sshh...no one in the Jedi Order knows about that.
luckybreak91
I always assumed he was just waiting till the war was over to quit the Jedi Order .... or at least start giving it serious thought. Figured he thought it was his responsibility to see the war through.

In the novelization of Revenge of the Sith (read it, it's really good) we get a much better look at Anakin and he was definitely entertaining the idea of leaving the jedi order and marrying Padme once the war ended. But then he had the visions of her dying and believed only the jedi archives had the answers he wanted, something only masters could look at no questions asked. He also didn't think any jedi master would ok him examining the archives for ways to turn back death.
Cehmacc14
Thus the most important decision happened. Anakin. Mace Windu. Palpatine. Who does he help? One refused him the rank of master, while the other offered him the secrets to the answer he wanted. Who does he help.
RidesOnBuses
At the end of the novel when Anakin wakes up as Vader for the first time we get a nice internal monologue, "You killed her because, finally, when you could have saved her, when you could have gone away with her, when you could have been thinking about her, you were thinking about yourself...
It is in this blazing moment that you finally understand the trap of the dark side, the final cruelty of the Sith—
Because now your self is all you will ever have."
SergeantGoodTimes
He can't leave because he's a slave. The Jedi council purchased and owned him.
TheNamiKage
That probably is actually how anikin would have viewed it. Slave kid knows he can't do what he wants go where he wants or "they blow you UP" gets whisked away by a group that doesn't let him do what he wants go where he wants learn what he wants. He just filled in the blanks, hoping he could be called master so he could feel free.
VosperOfAntarctica
That's just patently untrue. The Jedi Council didn't purchase him. They won him in a rigged bet with stolen collateral!
Targe0
And technically, his Master was killed by Maul. So who he belongs to after that is in question. But Kenobi might have been his “Master” in more ways than one.

MeanWinchester
Seemingly (though I can't think of a time it is directly discussed) you can't really just "quit". The two canon instances we have of jedi leaving the order were both kicked out (Dooku and Ahsoka) and it kinda seems like you'd be encouraged to "lay low" with the whole force stuff. Still, quitting and hanging out with Padmé is definitely not a bad idea
Jyx123
/Spoilers/
Didn't Ahsoka technically retire of her own choice after having been suspended and then found innocent?
As I recall it they were like, sorry we didn't believe you, wanna come back, whereupon she basically said she'd need time to think and by then the events of prequel 3 rolled around.
MeanWinchester
Now that you mention that, I think you're right. Though she did lay low from the whole "kind of a jedi" thing, even before the fall of the republic and rise of the empire.
Jyx123
She did lay low, yes.
But also I don't think she had the funds to just retire off-world, unlike Padme.
RenaissanceFaireMan
Natalie Portman says, "How would you like to be with me for the the rest of our lives, I've got money and political sway? We could live together for the rest of our lives in blissful peace. "
RenaissanceFaireMan
TBF, I'm saying that love conquers all.
Cehmacc14
I'd still take it. You're telling me I get to be the trophy husband to a hot wife. Get to travel to and often live on one of the most beautiful planets in the galaxy. Sounds like a win-win.
Trelis
But then he will not eventually kill the emperor.
Targe0
But the Emperor never would have pulled off what he did without him.
Mcmaclassie
Mace would have killed Palpatine if Anakin hadn't interfered.
natgrett
Mace would have I think, if Anakin bounces there would be no one to stop Mace from extra judiciously killing Palpatine if he were to actually win
Trelis
The emperor was faking weakness to get the sympathy from Anakin. If Palpatine was just fighting Mace, he would likely have won. Remember, there was an actual prophecy that it's Anakin that would bring balance to the force.
FiveShiftOne
The things you don't do are as important as the things you do. Anakin could bring balance to the force by abdicating at a crucial moment. Granted it's really unclear what "balance" ever meant and the prophecy might have been bullshit. Or about a planet where Anakin killed all three manifestations of the cosmic force.
Cehmacc14
Actually in the written novel for Revenge; the fight between Mace and Palpatine was considered very close. Like one false move from either could've determined who won.
alcamar
And we can even free your mom! There's plenty of room on this planet
3Davideo
Wasn't she already dead by this point?
userfriendly19777
She could buy his mother and free her.
Targe0
And yet she never did. She had enough money to free most of the slaves on that planet and didn't.
shakefu
Star Wars canonically says slavery is legal. Enriching all the slave owners on a planet would just mean more people taken slave to replace them. And with more wealth, since Padme would effectively be cornering the slave market subsequently driving prices temporarily skyward, the economic result would be a glut of slave taking to capitalize on the prices, followed by even more people stuck in slavery or (possibly worse) taken and sold as cheaply as possible into the worst slavery as prices crash.
whitefoxkei
But apparently Republic credits don't work in the Outer Rim, according to Watto
malachitedragon
and much like paper and underwear, they never invented money exchanges
Targe0
Which is why you use them to buy a bunch of cheap ships and use the ships for trade. Not hard to figure out. A working ship is worth more than a single slave.
wabitgirl
I mean...she was trying to keep a low profile, as a princess of a planet like Naboo would be a ripe target for any of the various gangsters and bounty hunters on Tatooine. I feel like people forget that Tatooine is basically space Alabama. Yeah, a lot of star wars is set there, but it's one of the shittier planets in the SW universe.
Targe0
I'm talking about after she had left. She could have at any time gone back there and liberated his mother, who she had met and bought her using any old junk ship, given Wattos business it would be a trade he would likely take. But she moved on and forgot her.
Isthe4thtimethecharm
She would not have had to go herself. She had plenty of people under her. But she probably thought the jedi would go back and save his mom.
wabitgirl
While Naboo is a nice planet, I'm not sure they're exactly an economic power house. Also, there would be a ton of political scrutiny if the queen of Naboo suddenly dumped several hundred thousand credits into buying up every slave on Tatooine. The Hutts would likely be upset, because that's not how good business works and it's unlikely they could replenish their stock to meet demand if she did that. The citizens of Naboo would likely object to their coffers being raided for purchasing slaves.
