#10 Normally I find America-bashing distasteful, but this made me chuckle.

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

For me at least, it helps when it's *from* Americans. Gallows humor instead of kicking us when we're down, y'know.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There can be a fine line. Self-hating isn't great either. Depends on context and delivery.

Between this fucking tool and dealing with Kelce/Swift yeah I do not envy their PR dpt. But fuck the Cheifs, I hope every away game they play the crowds bring pride flags to wave when he's lining up a FG. Also hope Swift dumps him and the same stadiums crank TS music all game long.

Fire muskets? This seems to say you're using words from 1785 to attack Andy Reid. It would make sense to criticise Butker this way, since he thinking on women is right out of the 18th century. However Reid's famous for being a good guy and also one of the very small number of HCs whose had an LGTBQ assistant coach.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

By the way, re: 1785. LDS Mormon Musket fire speech, required reading for all BYU students in 2024. https://www.nbcnews.com/nbc-out/out-news/byu-freshmen-controversial-musket-fire-speech-mormon-lgbtq-utah-rcna143891

He is an LDS Mormon. He speaks at public church events. Mormons hate LGBTQIA. In the 1930s and 1940s there were no good Nazis. Until the Mormon Church refutes their homophobic call to arms there are no good Mormons. Signed, an ExMormon whose family was high-ranking until their Mormon sex abuse scandal took them down.

#34 which superman? he's been around for 86 years change. I can believe homelander is better written than superman at his worst but not his best. Personally, I prefer optimism to the boys grimdark deconstruction.

2 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Yeah the Zach Snyder Superman sucks because Snyder is an Ayn Rand libertarian "objectivist" so all his superhero characters are like emo John Gaults struggling with the burden of being true ubermensches

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

True. The fact that Superman is rebooted constantly weakens the big picture idea of the character imo. Some iterations of Superman might be cooler and some core attributes stay the same, but small changes dilute the essence and legacy, making him a vague production of different artists instead of one fixed character. Kind of like making a copy of a copy. Homelander is just Homelander because he hasn't been reinvented, but could change in 20 years with a reboot.

#15 as an exchange student coming to the US, and with the language barrier still there, I was very surprised that high schools offer wrestling. It took me a while to understand that the guidance counselor meant Olympic or Greek wrestling, not Hulk hogan wrestling. They all had a good laugh when my confusion was resolved.

2 years ago | Likes 218 Dislikes 1

Give it time. A certain political party is dragging public schools down to that level.

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not that anyone wanted clarity, but US schools practice collegiate/folkstyle wrestling. If you want Greco Roman or Freestyle (the olympic rulesets), you still have to go to a private club and fund your membership.

2 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well 17 year old me was both relieved and disappointed that that particular wrestling didn’t involve fancy outfits or being thrown from a ladder

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

macht vielen Spass though

2 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If I was able to take bowling as a gym credit, kids should be able to take WWE wrestling as a gym credit.

2 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

bowling was awesome, too

We were forced to square dance to terrible country music records as “physical education”.

2 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Schools don’t offer wrestling in your country?

2 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 2

On this and many other things the US is the exception. And that exception is weird!

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Not in Germany, no. As much as people ridicule the US education system, what I really like(d) is how much activity is offered. Even my small 300 student Highschool offered volleyball, basketball, track&field, softball and of course football in addition to the wrestling. Our sport in Germany is organized through sports clubs with a membership fee, which is how athletes are discovered and later sponsored.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I didn’t even think about it. It just seemed so normal so I thought it was one of those things everywhere

2 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

In Italy we do MMA during recess. Male, female, and mixed.

2 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

The whole school team thing is very American. In other countries most sports outside of PE is done in clubs not affiliated with schools. Whether the Olympic type of wrestling is offered depends on the school and the teachers there. Well at least in Germany it is that way. Hulk Hogan wrestling also used to get more TV coverage than Olympic wrestling, so people might not think about it first. 1/2

2 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

Japan has sports clubs which are associated with the school. Though I think they aren’t RUN by the school per se, in the same way that American school teams are. But I’m pretty sure they still have things like schools which use their sports clubs to attract students. But also Adachi Mitsuru has perhaps given me a distorted perception of baseball in Japanese high schools lol

2 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Lastly the Olympic type usually is referred to in the local language e.g. Ringen whereas the other one is called Wrestling. So I can see how an exchange student could be confused.

2 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

In a lot of countries there's no schools organized sport competition like in the US. So no, schools wouldn't offer wrestling, or anything, there's still sport classes though. You have to go to local club association where there's regional competition with other clubs that are licensed. If you want to be pro, you'd have to go through youth academy system of pro clubs which regularly organize event like tournaments or whatnot to detect talent from amateur clubs.

2 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 0

There's also the path of the senior team winning their local competition and going through the amateurs rank up to the pro leagues. Funnily enough there's also some knockout tournament at senior level where if you win enough, you can eventually compete against pro teams in some sport (Football/soccer being one of them).
