I've thought about moving to Quebec because once I start practicing, my French is passable. Unfortunately, I'm in the US...

There are, however, polar bears.

SquirrellyWhirly
But it's technically correct.
itwasbuilticame
There's a small zoo in Nunavut. They have penguins. That counts.

It doesn't count. By definition, completely artificial foreign populations cannot characterize the region in which they happen to exist.

I once told my Canadian friend that he had that a-boot accent. He flipped out. All other insults never phased him, that one, did majorly.
DavidBrooker
The issue is that 'ou' is a unique extra vowel sound in Canada, so the 'aboot' approximation just sounds ridiculous.
DavidBrooker
Americans have fewer unique vowels sounds, and so they can't properly replicate the Canadian accent, such that Canadians think it's made-up.
SuperSmiles17
I had an american say I pronounce the word house differently than Americans, but past that he couldn't tell I was Canadian.
GreatDaneGirl
When I worked in the US people would laugh when I said "I'll go find out about it for you" I often times got asked to say it again.
Iwannaswiminapoolofpuppiesohwaitmaybenot
Please vocaroo it for us!
yourbassist
Lag, or as they say, leg. Sore-e. Using for in place of at. The last one really threw me for a loop.
zeniarose
I've had Americans say that I say 'aboot' but I clearly pronounce it 'ab-ow-t' ... my 'accent' sounds like people from WA/OR/CA.
DavidBrooker
I grew up in BC and AB and thought we had the same accent as the Northwest too. But after a linguistics course, I've started to notice it.
DavidBrooker
The Canadian OU-tongue motion is completely foreign to the US, such that Americans cannot replicate it (and so Canadians don't believe them)
Maddox715

No I live in PA
showstoppa77
I grew up in Texas. They only teach you about Texas. I didnt know Canada was divided into Provinces
PetersenTNG
Canada: The worst neighborhood in Oklahoma.
ThingsWithinThings
I did to and I learned about all sorts of world stuff and got a very good and well-rounded education (but it was a private Catholic school)

I barely understood that until i got on the Internet.....

"We're all that matters." I recall of my Geography teacher.

Fuck those other 200 countries
baconandeggsequalbreakfast
Provinces & territories :)
OhnoDinosaur
Now I know there there are provinces & territories in Canada. And Wikipedia has explained the difference to me. Yay learning!
KocaineNTaterTots
Bullshit. You're all just a third of the size of Canada and have moose. Fuck yeah LAUSD.
baconandeggsequalbreakfast
What?
Buttclench
I think he had a stroke.

Lived in a Texas for a few years, can confirm. All I got was REMEMBER THE ALAMO until the 5th grade...

Canada: Where America stops. This is the full extent of what I was taught about Canada in my U.S. elementary school.
fudgesickle
Wow! Talk about having an ethnocentric view!
FishingForConversation
I didn't know Nova Scotia was in Canada. Jesus, they didn't teach us anything about the rest of the world
FishingForConversation
I learned more about Canada from my friend who worked for a Canadian oil company for 2years, than i did in 12 years of dedicated schooling.
SlickBJJ
Or how to spell. Comments* ;)
FishingForConversation
You don't think i was aware of that? I typed it in.
DrDickinbottom
It really depends entirely on the school. When I was in middle school an entire year of social studies was dedicated to Canada.
wamccarthy
So do you live in UP or Minnesota?
storebrandproductmascot
A whole year spent on Canada in an American school? You must have lived like 5 minutes from the border or something.
sweetcoolbreezeoffreedom
Vermont here, learned nothing new geography wise. Taxes and internal resentment was all new though.
DrDickinbottom
I was somewhere in the Baltimore-DC area
storebrandproductmascot
Damn, I'm closer to Canada than you are and we barely learned the province names. Guess you went to private school or something.
PresidentProTempore
In Texas we spent like a month on Canada :x
MissBree
Montana checking in here. I lived a couple hours from the border, and they taught us literally nothing about Canada in school.
ColonelObvious
As a European, the only thing I know about Texas is it shouldn't be messed with.
Macksayev
Here in Buffalo (on a border with Niagara Falls) at my school we were taught very little, if nothing about Canada. We just know taxes 1/2
Macksayev
in Ontario must suck because all the Canadians cross the border to shop at our malls.
HiveinMind
12 years of public schooling can't teach everything there is to know.
FishingForConversation
12 years of public schooling should have at least covered the names of the different parts of our hat.
ajourneyinthedark
Genuinely curious, what country did you think it was in? Or did you think it was its own country?
FishingForConversation
Somewhere over near norway? I dunno
TheCarrotQueen
Welcome to America, where the winners write the books and everywhere else is bellow us.

For some reason the French and Indian war comes to mind. But i can't remember the details of it. Oh well someone will remind me

I'm still pretty sure Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, and Newfoundland are all the same place.
StellarPsyke
I'm from one of them, and can confirm that PEI, NS and NB ARE the same place.
FishingForConversation
I haven't the slightest clue
mirria
Go in the Acadian regions, see every sign in french, have trouble getting english service and realise that you're not actually in Quebec.
Housemaster
This explains the amount of tourists I've encountered in Nova Scotia who genuinely had no clue what country they were in.
damadamagoyolur
I had a good education, have traveled a lot, even to CAN, but shit TIL about 3 entire provinces I knew existed but not what country.
FishingForConversation
I've never been out of the country and have only been to Colorado and Texas since I've been an adult. Plus all the states between there & MO
yardy4321
Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon are territories :)
damadamagoyolur
Oh I meant the tiny ones to the east that I've heard mentioned but did not realize were not all the same thing and were in Canada
ThinkingAboveTheBox
I had to learn about Canada by watching hockey.
TosokTheRodentHunter
there also only 38 million of us located in only about 5 cities. the rest are scattered
BowtiesFezzesAndStetsonsAreCool
I have to drive 4 hours to get to the next town! It sucks! =D
TosokTheRodentHunter
where i live in ontario, driving 24 hours straight west only gets you to the next province barely. its crazy. the view is awesome though!

While driving straight West, you likely pass through my City... Timmins!

*aboot* (I'm Canadian, so It's okay to make fun)
TheBlackKaiser
I always found it weird when American's come up here and refer to our Provinces as States. A State is a Country yo.
ProctorValleyMonster
Indeed, but according to Merriam-Webster "state" is also defined as, "one of the constituent units of a nation having a federal government".
ProctorValleyMonster
The US has a federal government, thus its constituent units (e.g., California) are rightly called states.
ProctorValleyMonster
Mexico also has a federal government, so it follows Mexico is subdivided in to states as well. Baja California, por ejemplo.
TheBlackKaiser
Huh, the more you know.

Depends on the area. Parts of western Quebec are almost totally English, as are some neighbourhoods in Montreal. The rest is mostly french
TeslaTank
Actually English, or English speaking?
Chazwozza
English speaking. In terms of ancestry, we're pretty much all mixed at this point.
canadianbunnyeh
O_o Why would be pompous? We're laid back and friendly
melbot2point0
I think you've been confused with the French Ontarians. THEY are the arseholes. Source: lived in northern Ontario French towns.
nickydoo15
:( as a franco-ontarienne. Though I don't know much about small town northern Ontario, being from Ottawa.
Goatlord
Imgur has fed the idea that Quebec is angry, hateful and separatist. People just like to smoke weed and drink beer in parks during the day.
canadianbunnyeh
Separatists are a minority. Otherwise it would have passed :P
OhDavidMyNacho
Spent time in BC, I got the impression that no one likes people from Quebec.
canadianbunnyeh
shrug
Erkhyan
It’s not just Imgur. As a translator, I have to remind myself every day that not all Québec has un crisse de balai dans le cul.
Goatlord
Hey, a fellow translator! Hello!
Meradactyle
My aunt pronounces it 'Kay-Beh-Kwah'
SebaJun
Sounds like a name of some Asian guy
MagicalLegendaryCookieMonster
That's how you say it in French. I still don't know how to prononce it in English.
ggez69
It'd be "Keh-BEK" and "KEH-bek-koi." Or at least that's how I learned to say them
MostlyJustALurker
Keh-Beck ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
CanadianCthulhu
Quebecker
Meradactyle
I say 'que-beck'.
Mohico
As a french canadian, it's more like KAY-Bek et KAY-bec-kwa :)
Salpinus
I like your sneaky little "et" in there ;)
Meradactyle
okay as a non-french-canadian who lives in new jersey, what does the 'et' do?
Arehera
He's being pretentious and French. Et is French for and.
Mohico
It's juste the proper pronunciation, as asked above :)
metalprep2k3
As a person who deals with some of Quebec's people, The people south near USA suck the ones north are cool.
SuperDuperMissile
Je suis déçu que le Québec n'ai pas été coloré en bleu.
thatoneguynooneremembers
Ou en peut importe la couleur, tant que ça soit blanc bleu ou avec des fleurs de lys
serjo910705080
Ou bien orange
CanadianCthulhu
Agh ndp.... Pukes incontrolably....

Better Than the Conservative Party .. *puke puke puke* ;)
serjo910705080
Well, I`m from NB, we`ve never seen much NDP. Yvon Godin (federally) and Elizabeth Weir (provincially) are the only ones that come to mind
assmonkey4
Poutine.

Top comment
Myloveforpunsisunrivaled
I'm not much of a hardcore separatist, but when the rest of Canada claims poutine as being Canadian and not from Québec, I get a little mad.
assmonkey4
I agree. Also when people pronounce it 'poo-teen' in the most english way possible, I also get a little mad.
CanadianCthulhu
Still is accurate as fuck...
metalprep2k3
Very true
NillaForRilla
NB'S list should have been required to be bilingual.
CanadianCthulhu
Qc too... Law 101
ratchethatchet
That doesn't count though because they pretend they don't understand you when I'M FUCKING SORRY I ONLY SPEAK ENGLISH
mirria
No, Quebec is french first, english second. Ontario is english first, french second. NB is the only province that is -officially- bilingual.
acidebob
The whole country is considered bilingual. We have to official languages..... even tho it just works in Quebec and NB
DonjuanV
so much salt. i'm floating....
humanityBG
Now go to Google Translate and edit your post. Be the best douche you could ever be!
CanadianCthulhu
I already know french... I am a Quebecker... No need for google translate.

Do you want me to translate it in French? (I'm a translator + live in Quebec.)
dontbeupsettihavesomespaghetti
Translators united! :D I'm from Montréal, where are you from?
itsawerewolfbarmitzvah
numero un: DO NOT LEAVE, IF YOU LEAVE ZERE WILL BE JUST US AND LE NATIVES AND ZE DO NOT HAVE ANY REASON TO TOLERATE US
xsculder
Frenglish from Quebec who has traveled in every province... Racism is everywhere, unfortunately.
simbion
Quebec is like Canada decided to put all the unpleasant people in one spot & make them speak French so they are identifiable as jerks.
imgurisfornerds
It's more like France sent all her jerks there because she was tired to deal with their shit.
NoFixedName
It's more like : the Anglo invaded us in 1759 et treat us like sh*t until this
YouMightGetIdeas
As someone considering moving to Quebec, could you tell me more about racism being socially acceptable?
CanadianCthulhu
Its not that bad... Its just the separatist govt being assholes to ethnicities that dont want to separate.
BewareTheIceSpiders
I think the only racism here is OP's racism toward french canadians.
quickhand
Quebeckers are no more or less racist than other Canadians. It's a stereotype based on politics and mistranslation. (I'm an anglo Quebecker)
sammmuel
Thank you! I moved to Ontario for a while and I found the same level of racism. Québec had issues with *religions* but not really racism.
quickhand
Quebec has a more European conception of a secularism due to its complicated history with Catholicism. It's not against other religions.
MagicalLegendaryCookieMonster
But don't move here if you don't LOVE the cold and the snow.
celebritycorn
As a quebecer, I didn't even get that one. I'm curious on the joke that's behind it.
CanadianCthulhu
Le projet de loi sur les signes religieux ostentatiores en est un exemple.
celebritycorn
Je ne serais pas porter à faire une blague relié au racisme quand ce n'en est pas, mais il y avait un potentiel de blague néanmoins.
MagicalLegendaryCookieMonster
I live in Quebec and I don't find racism acceptable. But yeah, some older people are racist. Isn't it the case everywhere?
YouMightGetIdeas
is it true that you guys are kinda fed up with us French coming to Quebec? I'd like an honest answer.
sammmuel
Pas vraiment. Je crois que c'est plus pour niaiser qu'autre chose. J'entend souvent que les Français viennent un peu avec une attitude (1/2)
CanadianCthulhu
Nah. Were kidding, most of us enjoy french people.
dontbeupsettihavesomespaghetti
Crunchybass
I dont get the racism thing
Goatlord
I'm an anglophone quebecer who also speaks French fluently and Spanish natively. I've never experienced racism here. So there's that.
greyfoxv1
Are you white? That's an important factor in Quebec.
Goatlord
Nope.
marwanepallas
It's easy to point at the flaws of others, specially if others speak French (That's bad enough for some). It's very stupid.
SweetZombiJesus
The prejudice in Quebec is against anglophones and immigrants, usually. French-speakers are not discriminated against, really.
marwanepallas
& using "Racism" for something that does not target race or even ethnicity is a big abuse of the word, an English native should know better
marwanepallas
Other pov: English speakers can't into multilingualism & never learn other languages than their own. They come off as arrogant. 1/2
djzapz
As a french quebecer, I have witnessed racism and the subsequent proof that it is definitely not socially acceptable in most circles.
Koztah
Except if you look up "lache pas la patate" in the Antidote dictionary.
Goatlord
The post is a joke, I laughed. It made fun of all provinces. I don't think QC is particularly racist. Might be he same everywhere in Canada.
djzapz
I understand that the post is a joke but look in the comments, they don't all think so. One american straight up says Quebecois are assholes
