A police sketch artist re-created fictional characters from their literal descriptions in books. Here they are compared to their cinematic counterparts.

Jun 2, 2016 2:54 PM

Katniss from "The Hunger Games"

Jarvert from "Les Miserables"

The monster from "Frankenstein"

Tom Ripley from "The Talented Mr. Ripley"

Norman Bates from "Psycho"

Marla Singer from "Fight Club"

Jack Torrence from "The Shining"

Daisy Buchanan from "The Great Gatsby"

Lisbeth Salander from "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo"

Count Dracula from "Dracula"

Christian Grey from "Fifty Shades of Grey"

Annie Wilkes from "Misery"

Now we need him to do the Song of ice and fire series.

And this one:

I think these are just drawings by a 12 year old of the actor

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bullshit all the way, stop posting this shit with a false title, people. The books don't give that much detail on the outer appearance

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

These kinda suck though.

Greasy.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

hey i saw one of those movies!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Their chins are all so pointy!

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

TIL Cyril Figgis is Tom Ripley.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This chick "Marla Singer" did not have testicular cancer. She was a liar.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"I'll still cook you" said Katniss, who bears a striking resemblance to an actress named Jennifer Lawrence

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why are all of their faces soooo loooooong?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder if he saw the movies before doing the drawing so he had a face in mind, just like the guy that drew Steven Avery

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Had the artists seen the movies before drawing these? I feel like that creates bias, even unintentionally.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I wonder what's with the cut and paste eyes. And why are they looking different directions?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sure this is EXACTLY what happened. BS.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why do they all look like Benedict Cumberbatch?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was really hoping for Michael cera

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's amazing!

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This seems fake to me. Some of these books purposefully barely describe these characters and I wonder if this was done properly (1)

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The artist should have been given descriptions randomly, more than the characters, and one that isn't so obviously biased by movie portrayal

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is christian grey supposed to be John Dorian?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

where's Jesus Christ?

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 5

Nobody wanted to draw a little arab dude I guess.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

Good one!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

As it turns out, there are surprisingly few photographs from someone who lived nearly two thousand years ago.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

THANK YOU! I'm sure Jesus was described at some point...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He died for your sins because you touch yourself in the night. THUNDERBOLT!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Well, not too shabby on a couple , but the rest... i think the authors need a lesson in descriptive writing.

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

The choices for the Faces program are limited and suvk

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Suck*

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why would the authors need a lesson? I think some movie people need a lesson in reading ;)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 3

or maybe some people need a lesson in casting!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Some were conscious choices (for instance making Norman Bates look like a movie hunk to throw the audience off)

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't need or want characters completely physically described.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

You aren't the only one. I like to use my imagination. Which is why I read books in the first place.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I get annoyed when the scene has to screech to a halt so the writer can give me a full description even where a full description doesn't fit

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah, or when they do the stupid mirror thing to describe a first person narrator.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yup. That annoys me in P.O.V. movies too. Guy holding the camcorder conveniently walks by mirrors to confirm he's one of the characters.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Looks like the Fifty Shades of Grey author hoped for Robert Pattinson as that dude..

9 years ago | Likes 62 Dislikes 2

That's because 50 shades of Grey was originally a fan-fict of Twillight

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

50 Shades is actually Twilight fanfic, so that makes sense. My wife couldn't stop making fun of the bad writing as she tried to get thru it.

9 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

I read one page and it was so bad that I could barely get through it.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

'Jeez, it's so bad!' she says as she bites her lip.

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

U have to be into pain to enjoy them, because making yourself read such shitty writing is a masochistic experience in itself!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I doubt most of these works have enough facial detail description to do this without taking a huge creative license.

9 years ago | Likes 172 Dislikes 3

I met a police sketch artist, and usually people initially give just a vague basic description, which is why he will follow up later

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Yep and then the artist works with the witness to narrow down specifics; changing things to gauge reaction. Not possible with a book.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Which is why this is kinda unfair

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Depending on how important the character is usually dictates the detail of the description.

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 4

Some, but rarely everything needed like eye spacing, lip fullness, mouth width, chin shape, supraorbital ridge, etc. Usually basic details.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Do you really think sketch artists receive that information? "as he was stabbing me, i made sure to measure out 4 inches between his eyes."

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 4

Not in the ridiculous manner you describe; it's gained through A/B testing.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

But did you notice how much the christian grey looks like Robert Pattinson

9 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 0

I was gonna comment about this but heres an upvote for beating me to it. Shitty fanfic is a shitty fanfic

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Because it was a Twilight fanfic, possibly started after the first Twilight movie came out

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 3

I know. That was my point and why i brought it up.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Dracula actually has a pretty descriptive passage, it's always surprised me there are no movies of him with the mustache

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry I took 9 months to find your comment. I'm running behind correcting all the people who are wrong on the internet! ;)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Be on the lookout for this sick man

9 years ago | Likes 488 Dislikes 1

That man is a PERVERT.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I called the number, it's out of service, they must have caught him.

I think I saw him above the sink in the bathroom.

Great episode.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Do you remember which episode? I want to rewatch it because I don't remember seeing it

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Check the replies above

It's early on - perhaps the 3rd season. Someone flashes Meredith in the parking lot and Pam draws up this sketch of the perp.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

flashes *phyllis*, I just watched it. "Women's Appreciation" is the name.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Whoops, my bad.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"Women's Appreciation", end of season 3

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

This police 'sketch artist' doesn't know jack shit about jawlines

9 years ago | Likes 377 Dislikes 8

Police Sketch artists tend to exaggerate features so people will recognize them on suspects more easily

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right? I just wanted to ask if anyone finds those pictures kinda akward? I mean it's all really well drawn but kinda missproportioned(?)!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah, it's white people with the same haircut. The rest doesn't match well

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"looks alright to me" - Tim Burton

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Last time this was posted I'm mildly sure they said it was computer generated by throwing facial features together, not an actual sketch.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

This. Have witnessed first hand.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

At least he didn't give them all hoods and sunglasses.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or eye size and placement. They all look like aliens.

9 years ago | Likes 151 Dislikes 2

The look like drawings from scary stories to tell in the dark

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

There's a fun joke I've heard about how you never want to drop out of art school, in fear of only being able to land Sketch Artist as a job.

Police sketch artist depiction of Michael Jackson during the Jackson Five days: http://imgur.com/CbqlWSa

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

FOR FUCKING REALLLLLL jesus someone give this man a facial anatomy lesson

9 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 2

Right? Our brains are wired to decode faces instantly and this artist is slaughtering our concept of a face

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most police sketches look fucky. Makes me thing they couldn't get a job elsewhere

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

i imagine it'd be a really hard job to be accurate based off the recollections of people that didn't know they were gonna have to recall.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I always assumed it was because they draw it by features one at a time, each from the other features, so it makes it come out weird.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Why do we need drawings in the first place? They could just make a computer program to translate descriptions.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I'm certain that's what they do anyways. Not an automated program, but computers. Thanks stupid Microsoft Surface commercial...

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Didn't see the commercial. Did it depict a sketch artist using a Surface to catch the Making of A Murderer guy?
