My raised bed took a while as I'm 6'5" and needed the length. Downsides of being tall. Upsides - concerts and reaching things on top shelves.

My gear for the trip. Some items were used every day - knife, axe, saw, billycan where as others were dead weight. Looking at you wind up radio and book on Australian edibles. I also took a solar panel to charge gopro, head torch, phone for pics etc but it was about as useful as a left handed spoon.

Starting to take shape. I walked for 2 days and only got about 13kms (8 miles) because of hectic bush in and around my face that even the machete couldn't alleviate without some serious flailing. When I found this clearing by a river I threw down stumps and called it a win.

My pack all tucked up ready for a spanking in the -5 degree (23Fh) Victorian mountains. They opened the skiing season while I was out there and I could feel the wind chill blowing straight from the fields to my twitching eyeball.

I built a firewall so that I could be protected from the winds and any authorities hunting me for my extreme GoT streaming techniques. Pretty happy with that double entendré as I did have a fresh water stream that provided me with all my purified and boiled drinking water as well as some healthy Aussie trout in my gill net.

I Macgyver'd this billycan hook which had two settings - hellfire and forgotten tea.

Home sweet freezing ass home.

My camera and phone died pretty early on in the trip so this is the last pic I was able to take but I added a tarp to the inside of the shelter that extended out to a roof that caught the heat from the fire really well. Also put in top and tail walls to the lean to that cut out a bunch of wind chill factors and lay down a whole heap more foliage on the outside and under the raised bed. I ate mainly trout caught from my gill net and a few native edible plants - I trapped a rabbit on day 8 which was tasty af and helped a lot with the mental ordeal of getting out and trying to survive in the wilderness. I still lost 4kgs (9lbs) All in all it was a fantastic trip that I will definitely do again - just maybe not in sub zero temps next time as I spent a good portion of my nights judging the hell out if past me for deciding to do it in winter.

I saw the forgotten tea part and said "OH SHIT" And remembered to drink my tea. It was still at least warm. You're a hero @OP upvote for you

Forgotten tea. I had yet to have heard that as a measure of temperature, but damned if it wasn't perfect.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Next time take a normal camera that can take hundreds of shots on 1 charge. Would have loved to see more pictures.

G'Day mate, what brand of sleeping bag for the long dudes? thx

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I got a Kathmandu size large but still had to bend the knees a bit to fit in fully.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Your insane doing this in Victoria...in winter....in the hills. Brave

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

Probably won't be doing that one again anytime soon.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hectic Bush and Hellfire and Forgotten Tea would be awesome band names.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I think you're onto something there.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Upvoted for Aussie and cause I'm a rover scout so I appreciate the hell out of this.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Nice one! Quick question though - what's a rover scout? Like a classification of your skill level?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

over 18 basically

If anybody likes this, check out primitive technology on youtube

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

+1 for the last two tags alone! Good read, nice to see what you built. Also, you survived! Good job!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Thanks :) it'll only get easier from here on in right?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Mostly, yes. You did a harder climate trip, and now have the confidence in knowing you can handle it. Lessons learned, skills honed.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Primitive technology on easy mode.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What I've never understood about sleeping outdoors...how do you not get bugs in your ears/nose/mouth?!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

TBH it was so cold that there weren't many bugs out and about. But usually it's just one of the downsides of camping.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Pack weight on that bad boy?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Roughly 30kgs (66lbs)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I bet you have an awesome zombie apocalypse plan

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not so much for zombies but I do have a SHTF plan. For Justin.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What did you do while you waited 'till the billy boiled?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

He sang as he watched of course

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Actually that's spot on. Didn't even think about that but the birds didn't mind a bit of a tune while I waited.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That's winter ahah *laugh in canadian* We get those temps at night in the mountains while it's summer. Nice trip tho, makes me want to do it

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

In summer?! Damn, I would not survive a hike up there...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

it's only at night and it's not that bad when you have a good sleeping bag. It gets hotter during the day too

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it a legal requirement that if you are over 6 feet tall you must find a way of mentioning it?

8 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

I'm over 6ft tall.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah. They even have to register online now and go door to door to their neighbors.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

As a woman over 6' tall, yes we are required to mention our height at least 3 times a day.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

He's got ~30 branches above a below his bed, that's about 4 more than someone of average height would've needed. Not that significant...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Did you have sex with bigfoot?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

No-one will ever know...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks Cuntsparkles!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No food or water....? Does papa John's deliver that far out?

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Pretty much just is the southern-most parts, and at elevation.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Doubtful, unfortunately. You have to hunt your own pizza out there.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Fishing rod, and canteen that you can boil lake water in :)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

What kind of bow? PSE?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure TBH - It was an ebay special from China as it was my first one. Don't judge me...

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No judgement here my friend. Looks like an awesome time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Did you spend most of your time fishing/exploring? Or just relaxing?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Lots of time spent chopping wood for the shelter and fire to boil water. Did quite a bit of exploring and had only one relaxing day.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Judging by the bottle of lotion under the "bed" (next to the box of kleenex), I'd say relaxing.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

I ducking scrolled back up to look, same you.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fuck you. I had to scroll back up to check.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

:D

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Impressive. I'd be dead 5 minutes after leaving my car.

8 years ago | Likes 540 Dislikes 2

You're not supposed to hop out on the freeway.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

In seconds, that is a bit.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Oof that's a lot of text. Thanks, I'll have to come back to it.

TIL a firewall is a real thing that makes sense outside of networking tech.

8 years ago | Likes 362 Dislikes 1

Even in the middle of nowhere, the Chinese will attempt to hack yo shit.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also used in buildings to help stop fire from spreading.

8 years ago | Likes 34 Dislikes 0

This makes more sense in terms of networking.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

where do you think the name comes from

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Networks catching on fire (digital edition)

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What do you think is between you and the engine in your car?

8 years ago | Likes 109 Dislikes 1

I don't think about it, I just thank the gods that put together a steaming hunk of metal that takes me places more quickly than I could walk

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steering wheel.

8 years ago | Likes 157 Dislikes 1

This guy gets it

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Actually I think I had heard this a long time back. Appreciate the reminder!

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

As someone who is wanting to start out proper camping like this. What gear/tips would you recommend?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A woobie. A good knife. A water filter. Iodine. Water resistant everything. More socks than you think you need. Good boots.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Return home when you are halfway to the end of your rope, not when you are at the end of your rope. Make sure someone know where you are.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Start small and with the right equipment, that's the stage I am at. Pack some MREs as a last resort, don't venture to far.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

make sure it is legal to trap and kill for food nowadays most places really do not like that and it can carry really hefty fines/jail time

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Go check out Joe Robinet on youtube for all the tips you could ask for. It's where OP got his ideas from.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm subbed to him I think!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

yup yup. Guy is awesome.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

°

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you're asking that question, Tip #1 is that you don't try it on your lonesome first time out. Isolated + Inexperienced= Darwin Award.

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I don't know, it can be a nice way to meet a S&R woman.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah I know that but I'd like to Camp like this with a small group of friends and then eventually alone

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've solo'd dozens of times all over the world. But I have no clue on doing it in the UK.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I also live in the UK where nothing except northerners can kill you

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Thats a real risk. We'll kill and eat anything if we catch it.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

these voices insane are telling me tales from the stars!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not before putting it in a pie!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Where were you? The only places I have camped and hiked in vic is the Grampians

8 years ago | Likes 670 Dislikes 1

Canada?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Oz I think.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live half an hour from the Grampians and go hiking up there every so often

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I understood that reference

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Fuck yeah Victoria represent, never been to the buckland before but done some hiking around mccallister springs and love it up there

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Holy fucking shit people on Imgur live near me. I always thought everyone on here is from America and Europe or something

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

We've just begun allowing you in. Don't push it.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

American here - I traveled Aus + NZ back in 2007-2008, loved the Grampians, Mt. Cook (NZ), Cradle Mt (Tasmania), and Wine Glass Bay :D

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I had no idea it actually got below freezing in Australia

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Yup. Had a winter frost last night (-5C, 23F) and lost all the late fruiting plants in my garden. Ice everywhere this morning.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Holy shit -5?! The lowest it's been in my town so far this winter is -2. Where in Vic are you?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The southern areas get pretty damn cold, especially at higher altitudes. Also the desert at night, as there's nothing to keep heat in

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It was -7c in Sale (Gippsland region, Victoria) two mornings ago.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I live 10 mins out of Sale, can confirm. Although its the only time i can remember that its happened.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I was up in the Vic highlands on Buckland river. Absolutely cracking country up there.

8 years ago | Likes 382 Dislikes 1

Should give Wilpena Pound in SA a shot, or somewhere in the Flinders Ranges

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A lot of drug addicts huh

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Are you Bjorn Irinside? Just proving you can do it and not die? Did you kill a bear? A beserker?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wanna go too!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

There's some excellent back country out past Lorne that I loved when I lived in Melbourne. Give that a go some time.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How did you not freeze?! I'm inside in Brisbane and dying.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I do a yearly survival weekend in the high country. In april i went for 4 days with only a billy, a knife, and a hatchet. (Healesville) 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Went with two buddies, and we got clocked by that massive rain storm that came in anzac day weekend. Only at 12 wild mushrooms in 4 days 2/3

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Love buchan. Just bought a ton of land up near swifts creek. So peaceful and beautiful up that way. 3/3 btw i know healesv not high country

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Please define 'cracking'

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

"great"

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Buckland river ey? I grew up in Myrtleford. Beautiful part of the country for camping, but yeah, probably not during winter

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

Its odd how many imgurians there are in these small towns

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Buckland? You've been in farmer Maggot's crops again!

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Good times man. Nothing like the clean feeling you get spending some time amongst nature

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 3

It turns out, the southwest desert has no toilet paper trees! Or any other trees. Or any other plants with leaves.
