Like these things? You might like these things too

Jul 25, 2015 5:57 PM

Like Firefly?

You might like Cowboy Bebop.

Both are sci-fi-lite TV shows centered on surrogate families of space-faring scoundrels living aboard a ramshackle spaceship. Similar in aesthetics, yet vastly different all the same. Bebop is more punchy and likes to experiment with genre from episode to episode.

Like the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin?

You might like The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie.

Both are pitch-black and bloody fantasy epics with a massive cast of unscrupulous characters. A notable difference is that Abercrombie has released six books in as many years and Martin...hasn't.

Like Mass Effect?

You might like Babylon 5.

Both are sci-fi epics set in futures where a vast spectrum of different alien races are living together throughout the universe. Mass Effect may be a RPG/Shooter video game and Babylon 5 a 90s TV show, but both share the same spirit. Mass Effect would not exist had it not been for Babylon 5, certainly.

Like Hayao Miyazaki movies?

You might like Mamoru Hosoda movies.

Both are filmmakers whose movies are rife with beauty and creativity, and often palpably real in surprising ways. Miyazaki is the master, but with his first three movies Hosoda has shown the first leg in what will hopefully be an incredible career.

Like Adventure Time?

You might like Steven Universe.

Both are ostensible kids' shows with big adult fanbases. Steven Universe is a bit sweeter, a bit less bonkers, but both are candy-coloured joys with growing mythologies and characters of deceptive depth.

Like The Jinx?

You might like The Staircase.

Both are stunning episodic true-crime documentaries that are all at once fascinating, disturbing, beguiling, and unforgettable.

Like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra?

You might like Hunter X Hunter 2011.

Not exactly analogues for each other by any stretch, but if you dip into the anime well in order to fill the void left by Avatar and Korra you will find an abundance of kid-centered action-adventures of varying levels of quality. Hunter X Hunter (from 2011, there was also one from the 90s) is one of the ones that is absolutely worth your time.

Like The Legend of Zelda series?

You might like Okami.

Okami is the best of the games that have aped the Zelda formula, resulting in a title of the same caliber, without all the familiarity.

Like Buckaroo?

You might like Pop Up Pirate.

Both of these games will get the jump on you.

Steven Universe is fantastic. LESBIANS. LESBIAN ALIENS EVERYWHERE

Wait. I love Okami. It is seriously one of my favorite games. But I've never played Legend of Zelda. Now I'm wondering if I should try it...

Steven Universe is just so fucking good I tore through the whole thing in two days. So good. Upvotes for all the fans!

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

If you like good things: Watch Steven Universe. If you hate things that are good to watch: Don't watch Steven Universe.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 2

Babylon 5 is amazing. FUCKING AMAZING.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Firefly has more in common with Outlaw Star than Bebop imo. Hell, the quirky female lead is a frozen girl in a box!

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I was thinking the same thing, girl in a box

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You sir, may have two upvote of outlaw star... If I could do that

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

STEVEN UNIVERSE UNRNNNNNG. I love steven universe, so much so that I made dis v

Damn, wolf children gave me the feels...so good but so sad...

You and me both. It just kept building up!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't like adventure time but Steven universe is great

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Also, Okami is one of the best games ever. Colorful with great characters and beautiful design. I never get tired of it.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

It's also the best because one of the moves you can learn is peeing on enemies. :D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that fucking game.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've still got my copy and a backwards compatible PS3. I'm never giving up.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Upvote for Avatar -> HunterXHunter. I suppose One Piece might also be appealing.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

1/2 Instead of watching One Piece, read One Piece. Much better. Except for the early chapters because people sucked at translating them. So

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2/2 watch until episode 516 and then switch to the manga. :D

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Like Game of Thrones, have a kid? Try Animals of Farthing Wood, EVERYONE FUCKING DIES! THANKS BRITISH KIDS TV FOR ALL ALL MY THERAPY BILLS!

10 years ago | Likes 40 Dislikes 0

Gods I loved that show as a kid. Loved the books by Colin Dann too.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Like a cross between Watership Down and Redwall

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

This show haunts me.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Add Narnia to that list. The author was tripping fucking balls when writing that ending.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It had such a rosey atmosphere too and characters that talked like lovely old granpas/grandmas...

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Mamoru Hosoda has made some really incredible movies. Summer Wars is my personal favorite of his, but they are all good

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 2

Yes! And wolf children was great. Many manly tears were shed by the end of that movie. "Why the fuck couldn't you just say bye to your mom!"

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What about The Girl Who Leapt Through Time? The one also had me balling towards the end!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Okami is fucking bomb

10 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

STEVE UNIVERSE, ADVENTURE TIME, AND LEGEND OF KORRA ARE THE SHIT!!!! FUCK YEAH

10 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 6

AAAAAAHHHH

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Steven Universe is incredible! Also, anyone who like Adventure Time or Steven Universe should check out "Over the Garden Wall" It's good!

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

BABYLON 5! It seriously deserves more love than it gets.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I love me some Firefly, but I gotta say I'm just not an anime fan.

10 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 6

Cowboy bebop is so good I'm offended that it's an anime

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If you like Firefly -and don't want anime- try the new shows Dark Matter (mercs in a Whedonesque world) or Killjoys (bounty hunters in same)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Where can I find these shows?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are a few animes and manga that can appeal to people who aren't into anime. Cowboy bebop is one.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Cowboy Bebop isn't really an "Anime" anime, more just storytelling. No harems, no stupid facial expressions, no angsty teenage protagonist..

10 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 4

Yeah, like Boku no Piko (by the way I recommend everyone to watch it, it's great)

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

There it is.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Cowboy Bebop is one of the most approachable animes out there. It helps that the dub is actually super high quality, as well.

10 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 2

So I don't really like anime but I did like bebop. That said, I could definitely see people not liking it. ex: I disliked Edward's character

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But Ein thoooooo

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Forgive me. "Dub" ?

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

It's the translation from the original Japanese audio. Just watch one episode, man. It's definitely worth your time.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'll give it a shot.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It's funny. I think Adventure Time and Steven Universe are horrible. But love Gravity Falls.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would also recommend Star Vs the Forces of Evil

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I just literally learned about this cartoon a few hours ago and binge watched them. It's very amusing.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I love Adventure Time but couldn't get into SU. Just started Gravity Falls and it's amazing!!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

GF is great, though I can't think of many similarities between them besides being really good cartoons and bits of weirdness.

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

The creator for Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar, also worked on Adventure Time so there's also that.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I think it's mostly the expanding story arc thing they share...

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Logen Ninefingers is one of the best flawed fantasy characters I've ever read. Has stuck with me ever since I finished the series years ago.

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

You can never have enough knives.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie, say he's a damn fine storyteller.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

And his action scenes are damn well written.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yes. Love the takeover of the Bloody Nine.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Have you read Black Company?

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I started The Witcher series about a week ago, but Black Company is next on my list after that. I've read a lot of good things about it.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just finished the series. Just amazing. Do yourself a favour and get a copy!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

AGREED... First Law: Comparisons to other book series aside, excellent characters, engaging plot, superb action... The Bloody Nine!

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Reading Red Country was one of the most satisfying finishes to an epic saga like that as well. Loved it.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What are you talking about, that was Lamb! Completely different character!

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

i love you.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Well shit. Guess it's time to go watch Babylon 5 again.... Also, Hunter X Hunter is amazing!

10 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 3

Fuck yes it is, didn't even mind watching it in all subs. The part of the series about Greed Island was my favorite

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You sound so unenthusiastic about watching B5... it's always worth it!! (But I'm biased and just really thrilled to finally be relevent)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The constant narration during the major fight scenes were a little too much..

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah great except when it takes a sharp dark left turn after the greed island arc and leaves you just confused and depressed.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Thought i was the only one that felt that way. I literally moped around my house for like a week haha

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I still can't get over how Hunter X Hunter ended :\

10 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 3

It isn't over. We just get like a chapter when 100 animes are sacrificed

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's not over, the author for the manga is on hiatus (again) due to health issues. The anime doesn't want to resort to filler.

10 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

it seems dead to me, almost 2 years and only 1 release, thats beyond health problems there id bet

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I thought that the author died, how long ago did the hiatus start?

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

isn't he married to the creator of Sailor Moon?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My favorite part of the whole series was when Killua did his hunter exam.

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Greatest thing ever! It only took me so long because I had to get everyone's tags!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Mine was when Killua was desperately trying to save Gon.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I didn't like it that much since I hated what happened to Gon.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I mainly liked it because it shows how much Killua who was taught only to kill loved his friend and would defy his entire family to save him

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Chrunchyroll.com has all of Hunter X Hunter 2011 on it, and Netflix has up to a certain point as well. its fucking amazing. watch it :D

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I forget where, but I recently found a pop up pirate game. To prove to a friend I had the craziest dumb luck with that game, I started (1/2)

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

randomly inserting all the swords. I left one slot without popping up the pirate. I don't know how, but I'm a god damn savant at this game.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's got nothing on this for sheer terror:

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

how does it worrrrrrrrk

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Locking mechanism is in the barrel behind one of the sword slots. Plastic sword eventually pushes mechanism, launching spring loaded pirate.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

but doesn't that mean it would always be the same hole that made him pop?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After pushing down the pirate you can spin him, which in turn spins the mechanism inside, to randomize the trigger.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I need to play it on PS2. Played the Wii version and hated it because of those shitty motion controls.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

10 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I bet you can buy a Nintendo DS for like $20 now.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oooo, very true. I really want to check out some used game stores now lol.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The sequel sucks. Don't worry about it. Aside from how they had to butcher the art style to fit it on the DS and how much the world had to >

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Awww, that makes me so sad. Glad you told me before I spent money I don't have on a DS.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Bravest warriors and Adventure Time are by the same person. Not much of a point.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bravest Warriors has a more similar sense of humor than SU. Some people might find SU a bit childish compared to AT. Plus it's just funnier.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I like Steven universe and AT more than Bravest Warriors personally.Besides, its against the point to just suggest something by the same guy

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's like saying it's pointless to watch OITNB because you've watched Weeds. Or don't watch Futurama because you've seen The Simpsons.

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

That's my favourite episode! More depth in 10 minutes than some shows have in 10 seasons

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also why people would like it if they like AT the creator of Steven worked on AT as there main song writer and storyboarder

10 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I only wish they had some full length episodes (for a 30 minute slot), sometimes it moves a little too quick

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have all her AT promo titlecards on my old phone. I think that the show is worse off without her.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have Garnet's song on my phone, and I've memorized it.

Witcher is very different. Can't really draw a parallel like that.

God forbid you disagree politely. Jesus. For the record, I didn't like ITNOTW at all. Beautifully written, but very hackneyed imo.

You're misunderstanding. I'm commenting on how you were down voted for politely disagreeing

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Tbh it lost a fuckton in transation.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

What doesnt in any translation? Its still a damn good book

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

I thought Last Wish was translated pretty well. Blood of Elves was meh. Then they switched translators and Time of Contempt was fucking shit

Hardly. The books came out in the 90s in Poland and the english translations are only recently coming out. They began by translating (1/3)

the third book chronologically (though first in the saga). They have not yet translated the last two books in the main saga, and only (2/3)

Read Erikson - The Malazan Books of The Fallen. The best out there.

“First in , Last out."

This series is super, super dry, since it is just some dudes D&D campaign using a random name generator.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Which series are you referring to?

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

malazan

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Sorry to I disagree. Best series I've ever read. And I've read just about all of them. Personnel preference :)

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have only played the Witcher 2. I liked it but I felt really confused about the world, races and the prejudices. Does the book help

10 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

You could play the first game. It's not expensive and it's old enough to run on damn near anything at this point.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Old games are sadly hard to get working on newer windows versions. I cant play fallout 3 or bioshock 1... ;-;

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have Win 8.1 and Witcher 1 ran like a dream.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Somewhat. The game was only inspired from the book so the books has completely different events from the game but still give you the idea

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The game isn't just inspired by the books. It's set chronologically after the books, in the same timeline.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But he gets and raises Ciri in the first chapter of the 1st book while you dont see her till the 3rd game so how is it after?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

He saves Ciri as a young child in the first book. The series progresses, and from what I've gleaned she eventually goes into hiding.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The point of it is that you're thrown in at the deep end. The last wish is a good starting book. Its a Collection of short stories worth it

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Prejudices - It's a polish game. Races - Fantasy game. World - Fantasy Game.

10 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Its a lot deeper than that

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Everyone go watch Cowboy Bebop right now. Or not I don't care.

10 years ago | Likes 412 Dislikes 14

I saw Cowboy Bebop before I saw Firefly because I am that awesome.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Is it anything like Outlaw Star? (Don't kill me! I haven't researched it or anything!)

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Will be back later. See you, Space Cowboy.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

One of my favourite animes of all time.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

And if you like Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy is definitely going to float your boat.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Space Dandy was great. I missed some episodes, though, so I am not sure if it had some weird master plot or if it was just plain trippy.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

None of it is canon, but all of it is canon. I think the creators are just having fun writing ridiculous plot lines, which is refreshing!

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

im always suprised when I meet someone who doesnt like cowboy bebop. I could and have rewatch it forever.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Cowboy Bebop is changed my 12 year old life

and hunterxhunter

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, you care.

The gif in this post is from the movie I believe. Go watch it now if you haven't!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Should have been Flip Flopped. "Like Cowboy Bebop? Try (whatever it was OP named.)"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I keep meaning to, but I got all this procrastination to do!

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I tried watching it earlier this year. I was actually kind of bored by it, I couldn't force myself to keep watching.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 4

Just don't watch the last episodes if you ever want to experience happiness again.

10 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I didn't have enough sorrow for that after seeing Fullmetal Alchemist. Let it be known that two years passed between the two experiences.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You're gonna carry that weight.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Please listen to this man. Cowboy Bebop is the best thing Japan has ever produced as a nation, including the Playstation 2 and the Camry.

10 years ago | Likes 96 Dislikes 11

Actually Cowboy Bebop is the most overrated thing Japan has ever produced, including Godzilla and hentai.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 9

You definitely have never seen Attack on Titan then. CB is a national treasure.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

What about YKK zippers?

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

which is kind of funny, considering when I went to Japan, nobody there (that I talked to, anyway) had even heard of it.

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

idk man. Dragonball and Rurouni Kenshin are pretty high up there

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

I dunno Japan accidentally produced an Island full of bunnies that chase people...

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Camry is nice but the best thing Toyota ever produced was either the 22R(or RE) engine or the Toyota Hilux/Pickup it went in.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The 2JZ-GTE would like to have a word.

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

As a fan of the Cummins 6BT 12V, I have no opinion. But they are both inline-6's, the best cylinder layout of any engine ever.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Before Paul walker came along the supra was my dream car. Man that movie killed all my dreams.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

If like NCIS or CSI, but prefer sci-fi technobable, watch Ghost in the Shell

10 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

If you like Ghost in the Shell, watch Akira

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you like Akira but would rather read a book, read Neuromancer

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

If you like Neuromancer, but prefer some ancient babylonian mysticism mixed in with sci-fi technobabble, read Snowcrash

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If you liked all of those, but prefer recreational drugs, do some LSD

10 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

If you like LSD but want to avoid acid flashbacks, use shrooms

10 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

White boys get angry when I tell them that Firefly is just a shittier version of Cowboy Bebop. Please, losers, it was a total ripoff.

10 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 6

Indeed.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I couldn't get into Firefly either

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

True, but since I'd crawl through broken glass for more Cowboy Bebop, Firefly was a nice thing to watch.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll give you that. Have you watched Samurai Champloo? Same guy.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I didn't like Cowboy Bebop, but I might have been biased because my friend insisted "NO YOU CAN'T WATCH ANIMU WITH DUBS!!1!"

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Fail. While I hate dubs, I won't hate on people who want them. Just don't hate on subtitles plz, and we can be cool.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Won't hate on them, just won't watch anything without dubs, my eyes are bad so reading text quickly is difficult.

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oh suck. Yea that can be rough.
