Like Firefly?
You might like Cowboy Bebop.
Both are sci-fi-lite TV shows centered on surrogate families of space-faring scoundrels living aboard a ramshackle spaceship. Similar in aesthetics, yet vastly different all the same. Bebop is more punchy and likes to experiment with genre from episode to episode.
Like the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin?
You might like The First Law series by Joe Abercrombie.
Both are pitch-black and bloody fantasy epics with a massive cast of unscrupulous characters. A notable difference is that Abercrombie has released six books in as many years and Martin...hasn't.
Like Mass Effect?
You might like Babylon 5.
Both are sci-fi epics set in futures where a vast spectrum of different alien races are living together throughout the universe. Mass Effect may be a RPG/Shooter video game and Babylon 5 a 90s TV show, but both share the same spirit. Mass Effect would not exist had it not been for Babylon 5, certainly.
Like Hayao Miyazaki movies?
You might like Mamoru Hosoda movies.
Both are filmmakers whose movies are rife with beauty and creativity, and often palpably real in surprising ways. Miyazaki is the master, but with his first three movies Hosoda has shown the first leg in what will hopefully be an incredible career.
Like Adventure Time?
You might like Steven Universe.
Both are ostensible kids' shows with big adult fanbases. Steven Universe is a bit sweeter, a bit less bonkers, but both are candy-coloured joys with growing mythologies and characters of deceptive depth.
Like The Jinx?
You might like The Staircase.
Both are stunning episodic true-crime documentaries that are all at once fascinating, disturbing, beguiling, and unforgettable.
Like Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra?
You might like Hunter X Hunter 2011.
Not exactly analogues for each other by any stretch, but if you dip into the anime well in order to fill the void left by Avatar and Korra you will find an abundance of kid-centered action-adventures of varying levels of quality. Hunter X Hunter (from 2011, there was also one from the 90s) is one of the ones that is absolutely worth your time.
Like The Legend of Zelda series?
You might like Okami.
Okami is the best of the games that have aped the Zelda formula, resulting in a title of the same caliber, without all the familiarity.
Like Buckaroo?
You might like Pop Up Pirate.
Both of these games will get the jump on you.

Steven Universe is fantastic. LESBIANS. LESBIAN ALIENS EVERYWHERE

Wait. I love Okami. It is seriously one of my favorite games. But I've never played Legend of Zelda. Now I'm wondering if I should try it...
StillbornGod
Steven Universe is just so fucking good I tore through the whole thing in two days. So good. Upvotes for all the fans!
Moocat
If you like good things: Watch Steven Universe. If you hate things that are good to watch: Don't watch Steven Universe.
Muppetwarior
Babylon 5 is amazing. FUCKING AMAZING.
digitalnative00
Firefly has more in common with Outlaw Star than Bebop imo. Hell, the quirky female lead is a frozen girl in a box!
GroovyGhoulie
I was thinking the same thing, girl in a box
PainisMoogle
You sir, may have two upvote of outlaw star... If I could do that

I don't like adventure time but Steven universe is great
Moocat
Also, Okami is one of the best games ever. Colorful with great characters and beautiful design. I never get tired of it.

It's also the best because one of the moves you can learn is peeing on enemies. :D
GingerTheBeard
that fucking game.

I've still got my copy and a backwards compatible PS3. I'm never giving up.

Upvote for Avatar -> HunterXHunter. I suppose One Piece might also be appealing.
PortgasDAce
1/2 Instead of watching One Piece, read One Piece. Much better. Except for the early chapters because people sucked at translating them. So
PortgasDAce
2/2 watch until episode 516 and then switch to the manga. :D
TheAngryMarineBiologist
Like Game of Thrones, have a kid? Try Animals of Farthing Wood, EVERYONE FUCKING DIES! THANKS BRITISH KIDS TV FOR ALL ALL MY THERAPY BILLS!

Gods I loved that show as a kid. Loved the books by Colin Dann too.

This show haunts me.

Add Narnia to that list. The author was tripping fucking balls when writing that ending.
Salzab
It had such a rosey atmosphere too and characters that talked like lovely old granpas/grandmas...
Mrbigmick
Mamoru Hosoda has made some really incredible movies. Summer Wars is my personal favorite of his, but they are all good
MOTHERFUCKINGKHORNE
Yes! And wolf children was great. Many manly tears were shed by the end of that movie. "Why the fuck couldn't you just say bye to your mom!"

What about The Girl Who Leapt Through Time? The one also had me balling towards the end!

BABYLON 5! It seriously deserves more love than it gets.
MrBananaBeak
I love me some Firefly, but I gotta say I'm just not an anime fan.
ygycubtgyhugugyvr
Cowboy bebop is so good I'm offended that it's an anime
noscarletcoat
If you like Firefly -and don't want anime- try the new shows Dark Matter (mercs in a Whedonesque world) or Killjoys (bounty hunters in same)
callmeLadyMoose
Where can I find these shows?
shakespeareanwheelies
There are a few animes and manga that can appeal to people who aren't into anime. Cowboy bebop is one.
AdolphTheRedNosedReindeer
Cowboy Bebop isn't really an "Anime" anime, more just storytelling. No harems, no stupid facial expressions, no angsty teenage protagonist..
MiauFrito
Yeah, like Boku no Piko (by the way I recommend everyone to watch it, it's great)
evilyouth
There it is.
bghvgjdh
Cowboy Bebop is one of the most approachable animes out there. It helps that the dub is actually super high quality, as well.
Muchadoaboutnothing
So I don't really like anime but I did like bebop. That said, I could definitely see people not liking it. ex: I disliked Edward's character

But Ein thoooooo

I'll give it a shot.

It's funny. I think Adventure Time and Steven Universe are horrible. But love Gravity Falls.

I would also recommend Star Vs the Forces of Evil
gutclusters
I just literally learned about this cartoon a few hours ago and binge watched them. It's very amusing.

I love Adventure Time but couldn't get into SU. Just started Gravity Falls and it's amazing!!
ToastyMozart
GF is great, though I can't think of many similarities between them besides being really good cartoons and bits of weirdness.
TheBumbleBeeFliesAnyway
The creator for Steven Universe, Rebecca Sugar, also worked on Adventure Time so there's also that.

I think it's mostly the expanding story arc thing they share...

Logen Ninefingers is one of the best flawed fantasy characters I've ever read. Has stuck with me ever since I finished the series years ago.
oneeyedirishman
You can never have enough knives.
ISuperBelieveInYouTadCooper
Say one thing for Joe Abercrombie, say he's a damn fine storyteller.
darkie
And his action scenes are damn well written.
ISuperBelieveInYouTadCooper
Yes. Love the takeover of the Bloody Nine.
kargul
Have you read Black Company?
qazxswedcvfrtgbnhyujmkiol
I started The Witcher series about a week ago, but Black Company is next on my list after that. I've read a lot of good things about it.
Bamboucha
Just finished the series. Just amazing. Do yourself a favour and get a copy!
MmmYesShallowAndPedantic
AGREED... First Law: Comparisons to other book series aside, excellent characters, engaging plot, superb action... The Bloody Nine!
qazxswedcvfrtgbnhyujmkiol
Reading Red Country was one of the most satisfying finishes to an epic saga like that as well. Loved it.
advicedoge77
What are you talking about, that was Lamb! Completely different character!
GingerTheBeard
i love you.
Omamba
Well shit. Guess it's time to go watch Babylon 5 again.... Also, Hunter X Hunter is amazing!
SuitsandExplosives1
Fuck yes it is, didn't even mind watching it in all subs. The part of the series about Greed Island was my favorite
susanivanova
You sound so unenthusiastic about watching B5... it's always worth it!! (But I'm biased and just really thrilled to finally be relevent)
manoz
The constant narration during the major fight scenes were a little too much..
3RsReadingRitingRithmatic
Yeah great except when it takes a sharp dark left turn after the greed island arc and leaves you just confused and depressed.
Koodles
Thought i was the only one that felt that way. I literally moped around my house for like a week haha
ThatOneGuyAzazel
I still can't get over how Hunter X Hunter ended :\
CultofCedar
It isn't over. We just get like a chapter when 100 animes are sacrificed
Givemeabreak432
It's not over, the author for the manga is on hiatus (again) due to health issues. The anime doesn't want to resort to filler.
Ghihom
it seems dead to me, almost 2 years and only 1 release, thats beyond health problems there id bet
Dedpulley
I thought that the author died, how long ago did the hiatus start?
otakudan
isn't he married to the creator of Sailor Moon?
Omamba
My favorite part of the whole series was when Killua did his hunter exam.
Alicefyre
Greatest thing ever! It only took me so long because I had to get everyone's tags!
ThatOneGuyAzazel
Mine was when Killua was desperately trying to save Gon.
Omamba
I didn't like it that much since I hated what happened to Gon.
ThatOneGuyAzazel
I mainly liked it because it shows how much Killua who was taught only to kill loved his friend and would defy his entire family to save him
Cadaverific
Chrunchyroll.com has all of Hunter X Hunter 2011 on it, and Netflix has up to a certain point as well. its fucking amazing. watch it :D
MrNubbin
yesss hunter X hunter

cancelled though

It didn't get cancelled, with how little the source manga updates, it was just a good stopping point.

Pop up pirate is my shit
PavlovianProgramming
I forget where, but I recently found a pop up pirate game. To prove to a friend I had the craziest dumb luck with that game, I started (1/2)
PavlovianProgramming
randomly inserting all the swords. I left one slot without popping up the pirate. I don't know how, but I'm a god damn savant at this game.
idrinkcheapbeer
It's got nothing on this for sheer terror:
Artefact
how does it worrrrrrrrk
Diddlestyx
Locking mechanism is in the barrel behind one of the sword slots. Plastic sword eventually pushes mechanism, launching spring loaded pirate.
Artefact
but doesn't that mean it would always be the same hole that made him pop?
Diddlestyx
After pushing down the pirate you can spin him, which in turn spins the mechanism inside, to randomize the trigger.

It's a barrel of fun!

I need to play it on PS2. Played the Wii version and hated it because of those shitty motion controls.

I bet you can buy a Nintendo DS for like $20 now.
callmeLadyMoose
Very true. . .I'll have to look into that. And then I could play Animal Crossing!
callmeLadyMoose
Oooo, very true. I really want to check out some used game stores now lol.
DoubleShadows
The sequel sucks. Don't worry about it. Aside from how they had to butcher the art style to fit it on the DS and how much the world had to >
callmeLadyMoose
Awww, that makes me so sad. Glad you told me before I spent money I don't have on a DS.
DoubleShadows
Bright side is it's a cheap game...
DoubleShadows
> shrink, it's slow-paced and overall just not as fluid or fun to play. It's only saving grace is that the characters are decent. It's >

tantricpooper
I like Steven Universe, but I think a better choice for Adventure Time would be Bravest Warriors.
BladedSpell
Bravest warriors and Adventure Time are by the same person. Not much of a point.
tantricpooper
Bravest Warriors has a more similar sense of humor than SU. Some people might find SU a bit childish compared to AT. Plus it's just funnier.
BladedSpell
I like Steven universe and AT more than Bravest Warriors personally.Besides, its against the point to just suggest something by the same guy
tantricpooper
That's like saying it's pointless to watch OITNB because you've watched Weeds. Or don't watch Futurama because you've seen The Simpsons.

I don't care for the animation style of SU, but I like his heart. I don't think as many people have heard of BW because it's not on cable.

321Guesswho
Also why people would like it if they like AT the creator of Steven worked on AT as there main song writer and storyboarder
almostsomething182
I only wish they had some full length episodes (for a 30 minute slot), sometimes it moves a little too quick

ACEPILOT666
Somewhat. The game was only inspired from the book so the books has completely different events from the game but still give you the idea

The game isn't just inspired by the books. It's set chronologically after the books, in the same timeline.
ACEPILOT666
But he gets and raises Ciri in the first chapter of the 1st book while you dont see her till the 3rd game so how is it after?
advicedoge77
He saves Ciri as a young child in the first book. The series progresses, and from what I've gleaned she eventually goes into hiding.
CountCrow
The point of it is that you're thrown in at the deep end. The last wish is a good starting book. Its a Collection of short stories worth it
GingerSwan
Prejudices - It's a polish game. Races - Fantasy game. World - Fantasy Game.

White boys get angry when I tell them that Firefly is just a shittier version of Cowboy Bebop. Please, losers, it was a total ripoff.
LuckyICantSeeFarWithThisLeg
Indeed.
eBLT4
I couldn't get into Firefly either
Neverwhen
True, but since I'd crawl through broken glass for more Cowboy Bebop, Firefly was a nice thing to watch.
induren
I'll give you that. Have you watched Samurai Champloo? Same guy.
AlexisActually
I didn't like Cowboy Bebop, but I might have been biased because my friend insisted "NO YOU CAN'T WATCH ANIMU WITH DUBS!!1!"
induren
Fail. While I hate dubs, I won't hate on people who want them. Just don't hate on subtitles plz, and we can be cool.
AlexisActually
Won't hate on them, just won't watch anything without dubs, my eyes are bad so reading text quickly is difficult.
induren
Oh suck. Yea that can be rough.
