I usually fill my freezer once a year. My parents have a few (~25-30) sheep and most of those have a lamb each year so they need to be culled annually. First a 1600km flight to the Faroe Islands to my parents...

Weather looks fine for a sheep drive.

Baah.

into the corral...

The two rams

some of the ewes and lambs

Hairnets OPTIONAL!

19 times that and we have a hjall (dry-house) full of meat - weight is between 25 and 55 pounds before drying.

preparing to roll some rullupylsa - before

and after. Now they just need some time in the oven

A couple of days of that and I head back home.

NOW THIS IS CONTENT! I love your connection between family/food/animals.

Cool Story!

When I was in Iceland they really pride themselves on their lamb quality, I imagine it's similar in the Faroe Islands

First I tried to free them. I... I opened the gate to their pen, but they wouldn't run. They just stood there, confused. They wouldn't run.

"we'll kill us a sheep and eat the mutton, save the tail for old Jimmy Sutton!....BAAAAAA!!"

Lucky. My family has a croft on Lewis and I only ever get to shear, paint and dip them. Never any meat. Slanche!

Baah baah lille lam ! Do you ship to France though?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I remember helping slaughter a piggie when I was 7, it didn't bother me at all. Nowadays it's a different story.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Spinner here...those fleeces look lovely! do you shear before you slaughter or tan your hides?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

They are sheared in the summer - The rams and ewes are. The hides are sold for a nominal fee - they used to be worth a bit more.

I was wondering the same thing! So much yarn! THINK OF THE SWEATERS!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh my, yes...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

what kind of sheep are they?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Do a post about growing up there on the island!

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

Is this similar to haggis?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

More like a scandinavian version of the porchetta. Made for cold cuts, though.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I'm only aware of Faroe Islands because of "Scandinavia and the World"...

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 2

That comic is how I know so much about all of those countries and their politics and history. Pretty funny.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I used to listen to the band Tyr, which is how I learned of the islands.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Same, though it's not "used to" for me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Man, what a unique experience. Wish I could experience it.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 3

Go to Syria/Iraq and I'm sure ISIS will accommodate you. You did mean the getting slaughtered part, right?

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Always nice to see a glimpse into the lives of those that do more then just live in the city.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Poor sheep! It's way better than factory farming though.

Jeg vidste ikke det var der Færøerne var. Mut liv er en løgn. Troede altid jeg var god til geografi. Åbenbart ikke.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Nu er jeg nysgerrig hvor pokker troede du at de lå?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How long do you raise the lambs before slaughter? And ever eat mutton?

8 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 2

.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

5 months and yes I do eat mutton, especially if it is dried/fermented, called "ræst" in Faroese https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Faroese_cuisine

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Thanks, very interesting!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Shit, all I can think of to do with sheep is lamb chops. My American ass is spoiled.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Lamb stew is delicious, with potatoes and rosemary. Also kabobs, roasts, shepherd's pie, indian dishes, lamb sausage... *starts drooling*

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OMG what I would give to have some rullupylsa in the US. My family is from Farsø, but now scattered all around DK - missing it now, thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Er der ingen rullepølse i US?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not even close to like what you can get over there, unfortunately!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

aw, that saddens my heart.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Those sheep were making me horny, until I see them cut up... then I got really horny.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 19

I wish they would show total up/down votes, cause I've watched this go up and down so many times, it's gotta be high. Overall, breaking even

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Mr. President!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I feel like you left out an important portion

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

I didn't want to get my phone dirty, so just the one pic of that part, sorry.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They don't like to upset us gentle city folk.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Og velkommen hjem, hvis du har lyst til at sælge en halv rullepølse, så siger du bare til.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Gærninger. "sier du bare *fra*" Der ble det korrekt.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Næh, "at sige fra" er at betakke sig. "At sige til" er at vise accept.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Lurer på hva slags preposisjon er rett på færøyisk :) De kom visst sent i germanske språk, så vi kan alle ha motsatte preposisjoner.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel baad for the sheep

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 12

Tearing lamb from lamb here...

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I’m going to Ram this post with puns

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Very interesting look into your family's existence. The Faroe Islands are unique -- so isolated and yet on the shipping channels

Denmarkian here. They kill lots of shit over there and Denmark get the heat. Thanks for that.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 9

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

And they essentially speak Viking.

8 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 2

Which, of course, isn't a language. Perhaps Norse, or Danish?

8 years ago | Likes 32 Dislikes 4

Old Norse = what the viking settlers of Faeroe and Iceland spoke, so...

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

NORSE ISNT A LANGUAGE. NORWEIGAN, DANISH OR SWEDISH.

8 years ago | Likes 46 Dislikes 9

Username checks out.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Old Norse is certainly a language and closely related to modern Icelandic. If Old Norse isn't language I don't know what I translated in uni
