Amazing WW1 trench models

1:285 Scale Diorama showing trenches of the Somme region in 1916.

This diorama has been scratch-built by me and contains about 100 wargame figures made by GHQ.
(Edited).

'Work Party' repairing recent damage.

The model has a labelled lid which explains what is going on below

You look through the labels to see the detail below. (There are a couple of spelling mistakes!)

Front line - See the 'sap' in the top left corner, latrine in the bottom left and MG position near the centre. (In reality it would be camouflaged.)

View from Front Line to Support Line further behind.

Front Line is on the right.

1:32 Trench Sections - Typical British trench (Figures are made by Tommy's War, but I've made most of the other things myself.)

Well-built British trench

Wet Soil British Trench

Typical French Trench.

British Front Line Dugout (Figures are awaiting paint.)

Reversed Trench - recently captured from the Germans. (Figures awaiting paint.) I have 3 other section models, including 2 German subjects, which show other aspects of trenches. I used to blog how I make these models on the MilitaryModelling.com Forum until it ceased to exist.
My work is well publicised on the internet, but the section models have had much more coverage than the smaller model. The models were on display at the Remembering 1916 Exhibition in South London but do not have a permanent home yet.(Edited)

There is something I do like about the unpainted soldiers. Makes them seem like ghosts or like a video game tutorial.

Good work. But imagining the lives lost in such a bleak and desolate place is rough.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wow. I've never been into wartime books and movies, they make me anxious, but this is incredible and truly piqued my interest. Thank you.

You did Somme job man!

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I'd love to use something like this in my history class. God damn, those children would destroy everything in the blink of an eye T_T

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

What's the actual scale of this Darling? Err 1:1 Sir, it's life size sir, look there's a little worm.

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

If you accidentally step on one, do you get trench foot?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm fascinated by The Somme because my great grandfather was one of the few from the Newfoundland Regiment to survive. (Approx 7/8 men died)

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Wow this is amazing

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I think the smaller model just needs better photography and it would get the attention it deserves.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Somme and Ypres are the most fucking brutal battles in history. The old world truly died there.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And Verdun. That battle.. The goosebumps you get when you walk through the trenches and bunkers..

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is there a label where they could poop? Serious question.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

There are two latrines on the model.

IT BELONGS IN A MUSEUM!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Needs the snipers going 10 - 2 camped in the back, not helping their team capture objective Butter.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This would be so awesome with some AR goggles. Hold some mini rts battles.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

This is a truely underappreciated craft, and an invaluable service for generations who could never fathom such things. Thank you.

1:285?! Fuck you. This looks better than my 1:48 shit. But seriously, @OP, this is great work.

We would still love to see yours, @PercivalFailed !!!

What is this? A front for ants?!

8 years ago | Likes 33 Dislikes 3

Those must be some pretty damn big ants. Meme aside, I'd rather not deal with bugs that big.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Yeah I prefer mine the size of livestock.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That thing was a herbivore ... right? Please tell me it was.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yeah we've found its fossilized stomach contents

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Super cool. Question: why do they dog zag the front line like that? You'd think it would inhibit mobility

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Helps minimize effects of machine fire, grenades, shrapnel, gas attacks etc

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

'Traverses', were safer. They give you something to hide behind from bullets and shell bursts, plus short lengths are stronger.

8 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

They're to prevent a soldier with a machine gun from getting into the trench and gunning down every single person down the row

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

If a mortar happens to go boom inside a trench, the explosion won't propagate too far before stopping.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Here son, take this. I don’t keep it loaded, so you’ll have to find ammo as you go. v

wait.. what is this? Sauce?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not sure where to find sauce. This guy also has a video of a tiny cannon too, somewhere.

Amazing but you forgot all the mud, piss, and shit in there. And where are all the rats?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Awww, it would be so great if they had tiny painted rats in them!

A diorama of hell itself, what those men went through is unimaginable. Lest we forget.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably better than museum quality. Or maybe the museums I go to are rubbish.

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 2

As a museum professional, that sucks and I’m sorry to hear your experiences have been disappointing :/ what kinds were they?

8 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Oh I dunno. Mostly just stuff in and around my state. I love looking at dioramas but it seems like some are just cobbled together.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think I've been spoiled by living near DC and having easy access to the Smithsonians...

My Grandfather was hit by mustard gas and died early because of it. RIP grandpa.

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

That's a bad mentality to have. No one has to fight. Think for yourself.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 7

No one has to fight? What exactly were the alternatives?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My socks are getting wet just looking at this.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

23 hours :-). But yes, terrifyingly awesome!!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It was an unimaginable nightmare. The temptation to just run into gunfire and end it must have always been in the back of a lot of minds.

8 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I´m generally happy I haven’t had to fight in any world war.

8 years ago | Likes 80 Dislikes 0

You guys are very pessimistic about the future. I'm sorry for your delusions.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Human conflict is inevitable. Scarcity, stupidity, misunderstanding, whatever. People have always killed, and will always kill.

why are some lines like the interlocking teeth of a zipper while others are long and curvy?

thank you

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The 'broken' lines are meant so that there's not long line of fire down the trench, so if an enemy does make it in, they can't go nuts.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Don't quote me on this, but i think the zipper ones are the "front lines" where they position to fight so they can keep the lines of sight 1

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2 from being straight and slow an enemy trying to go through the trench and stop shrapnel and bullets. So like on guy couldn't jump in

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

3 and just easily machine gun everyone in the trench.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

4 or if an artillery shell hit in the trench the zig zag walls would stop the shrapnel.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The zig-zags also help dampen the blast from exploding shells, limit the range of the damage

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes that is what I was trying to say.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

that makes sense, thanks!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0
