The Screaming Mummy.

This man was mummified with his face clearly etched with agony. What is peculiar about this chap is that all of his organs were intact and it is believed that he was poisoned due to the indented stomach area. Some believed 'Man E' was the traitor son of Rameses III, who'd been involved in a coup to remove him from the throne, others that he was an Egyptian governor who had died abroad and been returned to his homeland for burial. Some believed the unconventional manner of his mummification showed that he was not Egyptian at all, but a member of a rival Hittite dynasty, who had died on Egyptian soil.

The Disappearance of Amy Lynn Bradley.

Amy Lynn Bradley was a 23 year old American who went missing on a cruise. Last reports of Amy state that she was drinking in the dance club with the ship's band. A band member stated that they partied until 1am. Her father, Ron, spotted her sleeping on the deck at 5:30am. By 6am, she was gone, never to be seen or heard from again.

The Curious Malady of Shanyna Isom.

Shanyna Isom suffered an asthma attack in 2009 that doctors promptly treated with steroids. She had an allergic reaction to the meds, which caused her to develop bumps on her leg and her skin tone began to darken. Shortly after these conditions developed, her hair started to grow oddly. It turned out that for some reason, the hair on her body stopped growing as hair and started growing as fingernails.

The Voynich Manuscript.

This manuscript is an illustrated codex hand written in an unknown language. It has been carbon-dated to sometime in the early 15th century. Bizarrely, it features mentions of astronomy, spacecraft and other topics previously thought to be unknown to that time period.

The Tulsa Race Riots.

On May 31 and June 1, 1921, members of the white community of Greenwood in Tulsa, Oklahoma, participated in a riot, killing some 300 black people. The attack, carried out on the ground and by air, destroyed more than 35 blocks of the district, then the wealthiest black community in the nation. More than 800 people were admitted to hospitals and more than 6,000 black residents were arrested and detained, some for as many as eight days. The official count of the dead by the Oklahoma Bureau of Vital Statistics was 39. Truely a forgotten piece of American History. (Big ups to LompHoofd for this tidbit.)

The Hypothetical Particles (Tetraneutrons).

This cluster of four neutrons is not actually acknowledged as real by current models of nuclear forces. However, the Marques Experiment fired atomic nuclei at carbon targets and observed the spray of particles from the resulting collisions, and found them! Not been seen since though... hmmm.

Macroglossia.

The peculiar condition whereby the child is born with an adult sized tongue. Very sad event, causes a lot of problems unless it is rectified quickly.

The Antikythera Mechanism.

The Antikythera mechanism was discovered in 45 metres (148 ft) of water in the Antikythera shipwreck off Point Glyphadia on the Greek island of Antikythera. The wreck was found in April 1900 by a group of Greek sponge divers, who retrieved numerous artefacts, including bronze and marble statues, pottery, unique glassware, jewellery, coins, and the mechanism. Clearly this thing is an artefact that is very advanced and ahead of its time.

The SS Ourang Medan.

According to widely circulated reports, in June of 1947 — or, according to alternate accounts, February of 1948 — multiple ships traversing the trade routes of the straits of Malacca, which is located between the sun drenched shores of Sumatra and Malaysia, claimed to have picked up a series of SOS distress signals. The unknown ship’s message was as simple as it was disturbing: “All officers including captain are dead, lying in chartroom and bridge. Possibly whole crew dead.” This communication was followed by a burst of indecipherable Morse code, then a final, grim message: “I die.” This cryptic proclamation was followed by tomb-like silence.

The Baghdad Battery.

The Baghdad Battery is believed to be about 2000 years old (from the Parthian period, roughly 250 BCE to CE 250). The jar was found in Khujut Rabu just outside Baghdad and is composed of a clay jar with a stopper made of asphalt. Sticking through the asphalt is an iron rod surrounded by a copper cylinder. When filled with vinegar - orany other electrolytic solution - the jar produces about 1.1 volts.

The Centennial Lightbulb of Livermore.

In 1901, this lightbulb was fired up, and never turned off. It has burned ever since. It is at 4550 East Avenue, Livermore, California, and maintained by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department. Due to its longevity, the bulb has been noted by The Guinness Book of World Records, Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and General Electric. It is often cited as evidence for the existence of planned obsolescence in later-produced light bulbs.

The Dancing Plague of 1518.

The Dancing Plague (or Dance Epidemic) of 1518 was a case of dancing mania that occurred in Strasbourg, Alsace (then part of the Holy Roman Empire) in July 1518. Around 400 people took to dancing for days without rest, and, over the period of about one month, some of those affected died of heart attack, stroke, or exhaustion. Some people believe it was an outbreak of religious ecstasy. I believe that it was the discovery of some real Ectasy.

The Patomskiy Crater.

The bizarre tale starts with an expedition in 1949 into the furthest reaches of Siberia by the geologist, Vadim Kolpakov, who embarked on a mission to draw up a geological map of the region. When he reached the northernmost part of the remote Irkutsk region, Kolpakov was confronted with tales of an “evil” place sequestered away within the woods that the native Yakut people referred to as the “Fire Eagle Nest,” which they warned was so saturated with an evil force that deer and a lot of other wildlife refused to go near it. It was also claimed that anyone who went near this place experienced severe symptoms of nausea, and that some who had ventured there had simply never returned.

The Oak Island Money Pit.

Located off the shores of Nova Scotia, along Canada's Atlantic coast, Oak Island is among approximately 360 islands dotting Mahone Bay. To the casual observer, the 140-acre island appears like many in this part of the province. Rocks and sand skirt the perimeter of the landmass while native forest and brush cover much of its interior. At first glance, the seemingly mundane island conceals any evidence of historical importance. However, appearances can be deceiving. Despite the natural scenery and serene setting of Oak Island, the story of this island's past is replete with mystery, intrigue and even tragedy. The potency of the story that follows has captured the human imagination and has driven men to their graves. From academics to adventurers, many have grappled with trying to explain the mystery, but none have been able to get to the bottom of the Money Pit of Oak Island. (Big ups to LompHoofd for this too!)

The WOW! Signal.

Way back in 1977 something amazing happened (apart from the release of Star Wars obviously). Astronomer Jerry Ehman was using the Ohio State University’s Big Ear radio telescope to sweep the sky for possible signals from extraterrestrial civilisations. He found something.

While pointing towards a grouping of stars called Chi Sagittarii on 15 August, he received a powerful blast of radio waves that lasted for 72 seconds. He circled it on the readout and wrote: “Wow!”

I'm from Livermore I've seen that lightbulb it's pretty cool

I wrote a paper on the Antikythera Mechanism! It was most likely used to chart the movements of stars and planets and/or used for teaching.

interesting! also, I stumbled across something called "incorruptible bodies". I'm sure there is something behind it but I have no idea what

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Cool post bro.

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

May be wrong, but I'm 90% sure the dancing plague was actually something to do with seizures due to a virus

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I have read ergot poisoning.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How do they know the Voynich Manuscript mentions spacecraft if it's in an unknown language?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Wait, there's a HAND at the bottom of the Oak Island Money Pit? Does it mean something else that's not a part of the human anatomy??

9 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

Everything I've read is that it's a human hand, but it always nonchalantly comes up in articles..."oh, just a hand, no biggie...." um, what?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

IIRC they sent a camera probe down the hole and it picked up a glimpse of what could be a hand

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I love this stuff! Keep it coming!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

#1 That's just how dead people look. The muscles that close the mouth cease to function, so the jaw hangs unless its closed soon after death

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Undead and incorruptible saint myths propagated due to digging up corpses and being amazed at run of the mill decomp.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

As a Born and raised Tulsan, the Race Riots are definitely not forgotten here.

The unknown morse code couldve been the chemical or something that killed them

Imgur needs a whole lot more of these types of posts! Nice work.

This riot isn't unexplained or mysterious, it's just not widely known.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so did 39 people die or 300???

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Probably about 300, but it was under reported at the time.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Thanks for putting this together. These posts are super neato.

Dancing plague was contaminated bee honey

Contaminated with mdma?

Something the bees got into. maybe the famous rave flower

When you die... to prep the body for a funeral, your jaw is wired shut.

The finger nail one is kind of easy to explain. Both hair and fingernails are made from the protein called keratin, the keratin in hair (1)

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

Bond to itself through coiling, which makes it stretchy, the keratin in nails bonds to itself through pleating, which makes it hard. The (2)

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Yeah I just had what I thought was a skin cancer removed, it was a 'sebaceous keratosis', sry I just butchered it. I think that boiled down

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

to oil gland plus keratin.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Steroids would have changed the way the keratin bonds to itself some how.

Radio waves from space? Forgive the ignorance, but what would cause that? Is it common? I know nothing.

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 2

There's lots of radiation in space, of all kinds of wavelenghts. Even some radiation that is thought to origin from the big bang itself.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I'm no physicist, but I assume there's lots of space goings-on that could cause noise in a instrument like that. But maybe ask a physicist.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Space is not quiet, it's full of noises, and chatter. Trust me I know I've gotten many degrees from the Internet.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Radio waves, in a "space" context, refers to a frequency range for electromagnetic radiation, rather than devices we use for transmission >>

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

<< and reception. Similar to "microwave" radiation - also its own frequency range. Ditto X-Rays, Infrared, etc. See SpecimenSpiff's >>

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

The crater - with reports of missing people, lack of fauna, and "evil spirit" legends leads me to believe this is a volcanic gas vent.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Follicular hyperkeratosis: when skin cells secrete keratin and it accumulates around hair follicles.

9 years ago | Likes 58 Dislikes 1

Could she get laser hair removal?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

maybe she should try a deep skin scrub

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

What's the treatment? Or, what causes it?

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Vitamin A deficiency. I don't know if anything else causes it as well. Learned it in My nutrition class

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

I consider the Tulsa race riots to be one of the darkest pieces of American history it's a shame it is so often neglected

9 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 3

I didn't hear about it until I was at a poetry night. It's crazy how they almost never talk about it in schools

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

*cough* trail of tears. That said i agree its one of the darkest. but either trail of tears or the atomic bombs take #1-2

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

Natives wouldn't have been technically American citizens like blacks. The U.S. has committed shit tons of war crimes of which that would be.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

slaves weren't citizens. 5 of them made 3/5th of a U.S. citizen.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not all blacks were slaves in the U.S. In the 1700s there were even a couple of black senators, I think.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Voynich Manuscript has never been decoded. we have no idea what it says. Antikythera Mechanism is an orrery. You are the history channel.

9 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 1

I was going to say it's crazy for them to comment on the contents of something yet to be decoded.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The Voynich Manuscript does have pictures though. They might give a hint (or mislead on purpose, as well^^). I think it's a fake.

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

its an original D&D player's manual

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The pictures are vague and could illustrate more than one plant each making attempts at using period names to decode difficult.

I don't know where Amy Lynn is, but she doesn't look 23 to me...

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

It's a photo that might be her after being sold into sexual slavery.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

seriously? they staged a photo that much? wowza. how horrific for her family to see a guesstimate like that.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, this isn't staged. This is an actual photo taken in a brothel that looks like it could be her.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ohhhhhhhhhh I see! that's worse.

It was the 80's

I'm pretty sure Amy Lynn Bradley is in the sea...

Okay but can we talk seriously here for a min about her tats. Tasmanian devil with basketball, a sun, Chinese caricatures, & gecko.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

She was seen since she went missing by a military official who says she was begging for help. He did not assist her to keep from facing cons

9 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

According to wiki she might have been sold into sexual slavery

9 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 1

Yeah, she was probably drunk and leaned too far over the railing

9 years ago | Likes 139 Dislikes 1

Too bad Jack wasn't there to save her

Unlikely to be abducted by the crew. That'd be very hard to keep covered up.

I have heard stories like that before. When drunk it is easy to stumble, go over the side and end up in the water. She may have lived days.

Likely what happened to actress Natalie Wood as well.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have very thick facial hair. Tough to shave and go through razors like crazy.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Italian hair can be very thick, curly & just annoying. Almost like wire growing out of your skin. It's annoying in certain... places...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually, more like Mediterranean hair, because if you're Greek or whatever it can be thick and wiry too.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But as a woman of Italian descent, I can tell you that we love the look of a thick, dark beard.
