HORSESHOE CRABS MOTHERFUCKER!

Dec 15, 2016 5:31 PM

So I was asked to make a post about these amazing little fuckers

Horseshoe Crabs are the shit! There are so many reasons these scuttly little bastards are the best things in the ocean!

This is one of mine

This is Craig, say hi to Craig everyone, he's a little one, but he's gonna get a lot bigger

LOOK AT THOSE BASTARDS!

They can grow up to about 60 cm long including the tail (that's 24 inches for you Americans and your weird measuring system) and 1.8kg. This one here weighed 5kg, she's a bigass one. And yes, definitely a female, female Horseshoe crabs are typically much larger than the males, as is common in invertebrates.

THESE LITTLE FUCKERS AIN'T CRABS!

Nope, they look like crabs, but they aren't crustaceans at all, they're actually Xiphosurans, an order of marine Chelicerates. What else is in the Chelicerata subphylum? Arachnids! Yes, these things are most closely related to scorpions and spiders, but they're a hell of a lot less creepy. Their bodies are weird, they've got seven pairs of legs (two more hidden in there), their tail doesn't have a sting like you'd think, it's used as a rudder and to flip itself back over, and then there's it's eyes...

EYES FOR DAYS!

These fuckers have ten eyes, or at least, ten visual organs. The two main eyes on the sides of the head are more what most would traditionally think of as an eye, they're compound eyes kinda like a fly would have. Behind those are the lateral eyes, primitive little things which are basically little more than just photoreceptors, one of the most basic light detecting sensory cells. It has much the same for the ventral, endoparietal and median eyes, while there are a number of photoreceptors running down the tail, so yes, they can see out of their tail. Just not very well, all of their eyes are pretty poor since they're so primitive. Why? Well..

THESE THINGS ARE FUCKING OLD!

We live in the Holocene period, the Dinosaurs died out 65 million years ago in the Cretaceous period. These little fuckers were first found in the Ordovician period, 450 MILLION YEARS AGO! And they haven't really changed since then from what we can tell. There are currently four extant species, Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda, Limulus polyphemus, Tachypleus gigas and Tachypleus tridentatus.

So, why should you care? What have Horseshoe Crabs ever done for you?

Actually, a shit ton. Have you had a vaccination of any kind in the last forty years? Have you used an injectable drug developed in the last forty years? Then you owe a Horseshoe Crab some thanks.

You see that blue stuff, that's it's blood, yeah, literally blue blood, this is because unlike in vertebrates it includes no hemoglobin, but rather it has hemocyanin to carry oxygen and hemocyanin contains copper. It also doesn't contain any white blood cells like we do, instead it uses cells in the blood called amebocytes to attack any pathogens that made their way into the body, it does this by making a kinda physical barrier inside itself.

When a Mr Frederick Bang (best scientist name ever, Professor Bang) found this out, and medical science caught wind of his discovery they devised a new medical test. To make sure any vaccination or injectable drug is safe they will introduce the amebocytes to a sample and if the physical barrier forms then they've encountered bacteria and the product isn't ready yet (This is a simplified version).

This has been an FDA mandatory test for all drugs and vaccines since the 1970s.

Plus they make friends with disabled Doggos

And if that's not a reason to care then fuck me, I don't know what is.

This is our Giant Pacific Octopus, her name is Noodle. Noodle is a cunt who bit Jeffrey.

"Noodle is a cunt who bit Jeffrey." This sentence says everything and nothing. It is beautiful.

I'm betting Jeffrey did something he shouldn't've. Her whole day can be about ways to fuck with you & she's smart. Take your chances Jeff.

Not crustaceans? So I guess they're not gonna come ask for three fiddy.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's a clearly a kabuto

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Still looks like a face hugger.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Horseshoe crabs are gorgeous, now when do they turn into full-blown mirelurks?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Less creepier than spiders? Mmhmm

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

GOD: See ya I'm on vaca. ANGEL: Wait...what goes inside those upside-down beach bowls you were working on? GOD: Ask Satan --I'm outta here

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I didn't know this stuff! Thanks!

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Fuck Jeffrey. I'm with Noodle on this one.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Mirelurks.

9 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Aim for the face. Drop em like radroaches.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Bottle cap mines'll take care of that.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Silent creatures are creepy. Do they make noise? I imagine it hisses and gurgles. Where is the mouth?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Pretty sweet Kabuto you got there

9 years ago | Likes 53 Dislikes 0

Church of Helix gazes suspiciously at your heresy.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Looks more like a Wimpod IMO (wimpod literally is just a cowardly horseshoe crab)

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Wimpod is a trilobite.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Isn't Wimpod more of an Isopod? Kabuto is based on the horseshoe crab. both lorewise and physically.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wimpod just looked more like horseshoe crab to me, It has the same shape and was found on a beach area , well, the more you know.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Wow, just checked bulbapedia and it is! I always assumed Kabuto was based off of an extinct animal like the other fossil mons.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Horseshoe crabs are pretty ancient animals though. They're up there with sharks and crocodiles.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I believe their official name is Mudcrab.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

Mirelurk.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

beat me to it

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wanted to downvote but then i remembered what a mudcrab is... yep i go and play a TES game... see you all in 3 months.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Your loved ones will miss you dearly. I however scoff at your measly 3 months. Scoff, I say!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I live near a beach full of horseshoe crabs. They're so cool!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

When I was young, my dad used to fish for eels. The best bait was horseshoe crabs. Changing a fuse at eight was kind of terrifying.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

He kept about forty in the basement during the season, and there were no lights down there.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Delaware?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeh

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You forgot to mention that hundreds of thousands of them are washing up dead on the east shores of the US for some mysterious reason

9 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

And they smell horrible.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Aw man, that's so sad! What's next? Bees dropping out of the sky dead? Oh, right. That's already happening in California.

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

That's been happening in a lot more places than California.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nature is literally full of our shit and giving up.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Informative, well thought out, no gifs, such a great post... wait where am i? I thought i was on imgur.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Unnecessary profanity was in full effect though.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Great post!

9 years ago | Likes 499 Dislikes 1

Simpsons did it!

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I didn't really think back then.. Thought it was just a generic bug.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I think your dog has autism

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 2

That moment when you figure out what that was after all those years

9 years ago | Likes 71 Dislikes 2

Were people not aware of horseshoe crabs before now?

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

I thought it was the face hugger from alien haha

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Ok so are you telling me you own an octopus and a horseshoe crab? do you work at an aquarium? Are horseshoe crabs edible?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I work in an Aquarium, we have horseshoe crabs there, I also have some of my own at home. And no, their eggs might be

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Eggs definitely, maybe other bits too? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Mze4pDcNBc

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

what do horseshoe crabs need to be kept at pets? I'm interested!

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Firstly a full saltwater setup (pump, skimmer, UV lighting, thermometer), second, a 200 gallon tank, third, sand substrate and live rock 1/?

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Fourth, water testing kits (pH, KH, Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrites, Salinity), Fifth, water changes when parameters are out of wack 2/3

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

And finally general maintenance and feeding, they can eat most fish, shrimp and similar, they're scavengers so just drop it in and wait 3/3

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

At what level do they evolve?

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Lvl 40

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Apparently they don't -- least not for the past 450 million years!

9 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Must be carrying everstones.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

To little trainers I say. Better catch one and beat small animals to submission

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who is Jeffrey?

9 years ago | Likes 179 Dislikes 1

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 197 Dislikes 0

Make a mr. Noodle post! They're my favorite sea animal.

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Might just do that, maybe tomorrow

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

I would love stories of Noodles assholery!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

What is an octopus' bite like? Lil pinch or big ow? Do they typically draw blood or leave a bruise?

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Big ow, they have a big ass beak like a parrot, took a chunk of his arm. And to make it worse, bloody things are venomous

9 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 0

Yikes! How venomous? Like what does the venom do to a person?

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Fortunately it's not that nasty venom, due to their size they generally don't need to use venom to kill. He was still hospitalized though

9 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Which aquarium?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Sea-Life in Concord Mills

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Hi fellow aquarist! I also take care of a GPO!

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How does someone aquire a job like this?

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Jeffrey is just this nice bloke from down the road in't he?

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Stroke the furry wall.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

"Ohh I'm Jeffrey. My wife has varicose veins!"

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I once danced to a 3 song set from that movie when I was a stripper. Made $1000 that night and drank for free.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Nice work, champ. Must have thrown that ass in one hell of a circle.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Idk about u but all I see is chitin to be farmed

9 years ago | Likes 28 Dislikes 0

Finally

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Trilobites. Oil and chitin for days.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Ark?

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Ark.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do these crabs have to be killed for the blood? Or is there an unintelligent way to extract it?

9 years ago | Likes 85 Dislikes 1

About a cc is bled... Not much. Here on the East coast the issue is the crabs are caught in Delaware and released on cape cod

9 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

That seems to be a not-great idea

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

surprisingly the fishery is rebounding from a dearth of activity in the 90s/early 2000s...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is that why there are so many dead ones on the beach of the cape?!

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

might be.....could also be lots of molts too though

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a resident of cape cod, I frequent the beaches, and they are covered in molts, sheds of the shell. It's more common to see a live one.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thanks. There's so much material that I couldn't imagine they were just molts. This is comforting :-)

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

UNINTRUSIVE FUCK AUTOCORRECT

9 years ago | Likes 50 Dislikes 0

A non intrusive method of drawing a clean sample of blood? No. Non-lethal? Probably.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

They aren't killed when the blood is taken. Some die from stress (typically already weak ones), but usually they're released unharmed after

9 years ago | Likes 171 Dislikes 1

Some actually get bled several times. There are a few at my dads place that have returned every year for the past 8 years

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

but doesn't that drain a shit-ton? and what about the pain?

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 3

Getting an IV put in hurts for a moment, but after that docs can bleed you dry without issue. I'd guess it's not bad for them either.

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

There's been some evidence, however, that the blood harvesting can significantly affect their reproductive rates.

9 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

Having said that - if you have a choice between being a horseshoe crab or being a cow - go team horseshoe crab. Srsly.

9 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

I'll keep that in mind

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

On the other hand, it's just a horseshoe crab, we can breed more of them. They've survived much worse than a blood donation.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

But the picture... parts appear to be missing.

9 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 5

And that seems like more blood than a horseshoe crab can afford lose.

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Their shells are actually hinged, they're probably trying to flip back onto their legs:

9 years ago | Likes 118 Dislikes 0

Ok, I see the tail pointing all the way to his front. That's better than, here, let me crack you in half and harvest your blood

9 years ago | Likes 49 Dislikes 0

Horseshoe crab blood is too valuable to carelessly kill them. I'd love to assume we wouldn't kill them if that wasn't the case but y'know..

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Fucking incredible. TIL crabs can... er... "donate" blood... stuff.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Poor Arachnids...

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

PS If you see one upside down on the beach, please flip it onto it's legs, they'll sometimes get stuck, especially after breeding

9 years ago | Likes 92 Dislikes 1

They aren't the only ones that struggle to flip over after breeding lol

9 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

Sorry to hear that about your mother.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Just watch for the pointy part of the tails. Don't let them shank you. The sides are ok, pointy end, not so much.

9 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Is it dangerous to be stung by one? or does it just hurt like a motherfucking hell?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I forgot to put it in the post, but here's a baby Horseshoe Crab:

I thought either was considered acceptable?

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Was not gonna upvote...but this threw me

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

@OP I desperately want a horseshoe crab for my saltwater tank, but I've read they do poorly in home aquaria. Thoughts?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You need at very minimum a 200 gallon tank, a sandy substrate layer and no really aggressive species in the tank.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oof. The largest of my tanks is 120gal, and it's currently inactive anyway. Guess I'll hold off. Oh well...

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

oh gosh thats small

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's what she said =.(

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

No, there's nothing in there to eat but the organs

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

But I seen people eat tarantulas and scorpions on tv

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why the hell did you LEAD with this?

*didn't

9 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I think you accidentally a word

9 years ago | Likes 82 Dislikes 1

They forgot

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

How does one go about keeping one/many? Given how potentially they grow to 20 picdemitres (60cm of your earth measurements)? Ever as pets?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are multiple subspecies and certain subsets of a population grow to different final sizes. You still need a very large tank though

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Could we get a pic of your setup? Is this a hobby or work related for you?

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I work in an aquarium, and I think my boss would probably get a bit mad at me for showing our specific setup publically

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Which aquarium? I used to volunteer at Newport Aquarium in KY and these were pretty much our facts, verbatim, for the horseshoe crabs.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Judging on the octopus picture he might work at a zoo/aquarium.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How do they have babies?

9 years ago | Likes 83 Dislikes 0

Well when a male horseshoe crab loves a female horseshoe crab...

9 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Well damn

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are the eggs able to hatch in captivity with a higher survival rate?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Do all of them hatch!? That's a ton of babies

9 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Horseshoe Crab is consumed in Thailand and Vietnam. The eggs are eaten in parts of Southeast Asia and China

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No, they're all shell and organs, no meat in there

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

How's that possible. Don't they need muscle?

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I've seen live ones at some chinese seafood places in asia, so some people must eat them. I've also had mantis shrimp at those places.
