2 years and 11 days ago I was attacked by a dog and what I thought was my perfect life fell apart. I know there’s a no selfie rule but I don’t expect this to go anywhere anyway, so I don’t really care.
My nose was the worst bit of it. Two holes all the way through my nose, I could see through both my nostrils before they stitched me up, but the left side was way worse. I lost a chunk of my nose, and they didn’t know if what they could see back together would even take. My septum was completely cut through, as was my top lip, which suffered some nerve damage, and I don’t have a frenulum anymore!
My eye is what really made me realize I was lucky. Though arguably the least serious problem resulting from this, doctors said if the bite had been even half an inch higher I would have lost my right eye entirely.
This is me last week, with makeup
And probably a month ago, without makeup. Since October 22, 2015 I’ve had two facial surgeries, many many therapy sessions, and one lawsuit over who was going to pay my medical bills. To see this picture next to the first one still absolutely amazes me because I was 10000% convinced my face would be scarred for the rest of my life. Now you can only see the scars if you’re looking for them. I was incredibly lucky that my body healed so well and that I happened to live in an area home to one of the best plastic surgeons in the state. Anyway, thanks for putting up with this, 2 years is a big deal for me, and I wanted to tell someone about it who didn’t experience the whole thing with me.
Cat tax
FP Edit: the frenulum I’m referring to is the piece of skin that connects your top lip to your gums.
Can someone explain to me how I look like Arya Stark I don’t see it?
Thank you everyone for your kind thoughts and comments :)
Send noods I guess
FP Edit 2: Everyone keeps asking the same questions: what kind of dog was it and how did it happen?
It was a German shepherd beagle mix, but at 95 pounds was the size of a German shepherd.
The dog was my then boyfriends dog and I saw him every single day for the last 7 months we dated up until the day he attacked me. I was very familiar with the dog and he was always friendly and loving. He treated me like his family, and I even took care of him when they were on vacation. The night I was attacked, I was on the couch between my boyfriend and the dog. It was time for me to leave, so I got up and bent down to pet the dog goodbye, something I did every single night. For some reason, he attacked me. My boyfriend says he got his hands between us and pushed me away while holding the dog by his neck against the wall. All I remember is bending down to pet him and then being on my knees 5 feet away, and as I took my hands from my face, saw they were covered in blood and began screaming.
TLDR; bent down to pet the dog like I did every day, he attacked me
CallMeVoodoo
I thought you were about 6 years old in the first few pics Babyface McGee. You got some wolverine healability.
SaligiaABN
Wow OP.
ISupportYourViews
Stared at the firt pic for 2 minutes thinking "That kid's older than 2 years and 10 days. He's at least 4."
NeverMyReligion
Same.
JartBanssen
With makeup? You're a great eyebrow artist! Glad you didn't have to live a life as scarface. My regards!
giraffesarebetter
Lol thank you I like to think I’m good at them
NameNotFoundException
While I may not be a doctor, I'm pretty certain the two holes in your nose are called "nostrils"
giraffesarebetter
Lol +1 I laughed
Logan9Fingers
I was thinking "when is she gonna show the healed scars?" But you healed so well i couldnt even tell. Im happy for you.
ItsTime4it
That is not a good doggo
LeeroyTheBird
I want to say there's no such thing as a bad doggo, but there is.
theyar
Yeah seriously. There are bad owners. And there are awesome owners with dogs that they don't realize just aren't fit to live with humans.
PutThePRNDLinD
Wow. Nice outcome.
giraffesarebetter
Hey that’s what my doctor said ????
PutThePRNDLinD
I'm not a doctor, but I do occasionally play one on the internet. Outcome is a combo of his skill, your good care...and luck.
Counterfit
Your doctor was hitting on you
awildcharmander
Man, I hope you don't have any insecurities about it, because I genuinely could not tell anything had happened from the 2 after pics.
Barrezio
When I was 4 I was mauled by the family Doberman. My face was torn up really bad. Thankfully, 40 years later the scars are practically gone.
begbietossesapint
You look fantastic. No makeup required.
Mimicry09
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw a brief glimpse of the Stark girl

You look just great! Glad you got through it okay.
giraffesarebetter
Thank you :)
DonutPolice
I'm glad you prevailed in the end
jjb926
Yeah, you look amazing. *And now I've said too much. Run away!*
spict
Stitches make wonders. I have experience of having that done for one injury but not for another similar one. It shows, a lot.
UpvoteFairy3001
Seriously looks amazing. I can't even find the scars WHILE I'm looking for them.
Noteuropean
I was bit in the face 2 weeks ago by a dog too. There was so much damn blood...Hope I make as good as a recovery as you @op!
giraffesarebetter
Message me if you ever want to talk! It can be hard both physically and emotionally and I would have loved someone who understood
LincolnSiixEcho
What actually happened?! Did you try kissing him or somethin? Why'd he attack the face?!
giraffesarebetter
Bent down to pet him as I was leaving
jfred325350
I was bit as a 6 yr old who hit a strange dog who got aggressive with me, 32 stitches on my face. Thank God for plastic surgery and a beard.

jfred325350
Lol I was a 6 yr old, was sitting outside minding my business, a distant neighbors dog came up and started pushing me around, I hit em.
uslydog
This is why dog owners has to be careful. not saying all dog owners but some more than many. i was bitten by a dog when i was a kid (1)
atoyot
The amount of anxiety I feel when my dog shows any form of aggression is insane. I work hard to fix it, but all it takes is a second.
LoquaciousDude
Whatever you do, never sush the dog when it growls, the reason why it growls doesn't go away by it not being allowed to growl.
StubbAdub
My female dog is so lovely but very very possessive. I am very careful letting her be around my little niece and nephew
StubbAdub
2/2 as she has warning snapped at them when they got too close to me, and gets scared when they are running around being kids
uslydog
my injuries weren't horrific as this but im still scared of dogs
giraffesarebetter
Training is super important!! I was working at a training place up until a month before I was bit and learned a lot
GnomeMode
My sister has been bitten in the face 5 times by 3 different dogs. Twice was our dog, once uncle's dog, lastly by a strange dog at the vet
giraffesarebetter
Some people get bit a lot! I babysat a kid who got bit all the time for no reason it was ridiculous dogs just didn’t like him
GnomeMode
It's true. And the people it happens to aren't mean so it's not like the dogs are "sensing" something. There's gotta be a chemical these
GnomeMode
unlucky people produce and dogs just fucking hate it.
DigitalWaffle
Doberman attacked me as a kid. Still have scars on my leg. Dad saved me or would have been much worse. He killed it with his bare hands.
objectsubjectverb
Doberman also bite my face when I was 6. I still have a small scar. I tried to pet it while it was eating.
giraffesarebetter
That’s scary ! Glad your dad was there
Jasarg
his BEAR hands? Is your dad a bear. I need to know.
ideagrinder
He's more like a half pig half bear half man
Jasarg
Haha I get that reference +1
sicanish
Wish I didn't google "frenulum". Glad you are doing better tho!
giraffesarebetter
Lol it’s just the bit of skin that connects your upper lip to your gums/ tongue to mouth/foreskin to penis what’s the big deal :p
Different55
TIL that exists on most people.
abracadabrajahbuloneymahaboneyahyahyah
There are other frenulums in other locations...
FiftyShadesOfCauliflower
Just like the human body has multiple sphincters.
giraffesarebetter
Yes I know that’s why I threw in the penis one. It’s pretty much just a flap of skin that connects things. Also one on the clitoral hood
abracadabrajahbuloneymahaboneyahyahyah
Yer smart
giraffesarebetter
I try
MikeMcAwesome91
Seems like every week I learn about a new part of the vagina. Am I supposed to pop the hood while I'm doing the sex?
peppermintpixie
The vagina is actually only the inner musculature, the outer bit where the clitoral hood/clitoris are located is called the vulva.
giraffesarebetter
This genuinely made me laugh thank you
HoaryP
Dog bites are the fucking worst. I'm glad you recovered. Are you afraid of dogs now? Or the breed? Just curious as a former dog bather
giraffesarebetter
Just the big ones, and then barking and dogs in my face give me panic attacks.. also slower to trust new dogs but I still love them
TwoLemony
But it's sort of strange to me that that dog did that seemingly out of nowhere! Has he ever had aggressive tendencies in the past?
jsmi813
I wanted to ask this too, bet me to it :)
giraffesarebetter
Not really, just some small incidents. It was very very strange
TwoLemony
This terrifies me. Thank you for sharing your story!
giraffesarebetter
Just learn from it! All animals should be treated with caution. Dogs are amazing but they’re all potentially dangerous animals. Take this 1/
Sparkles42
You are beautiful. This doesn't compare but once I broke my toe and the nail fell off. It regrew and I 100% believe it is my best toe nail
LeeroyTheBird
I slammed my finger in the car door like 2-3 months ago. It fell off like 2 weeks ago. Looks so weird.
LeeroyTheBird
And by "fell off" I mean I was able to peel it off.
tinyfootprints
You peeled off your finger? Ew!
CreateYourOwnNormality
No, idiot, the car door!
LeeroyTheBird
The finger nail. It was coming off one way or the other! And I was sick of dealing with it lol. I can post a picture if you'd like! ;D
tinyfootprints
Go for it!
tinyfootprints
I got the nail of my big toe mostly ripped off in a bike accident at about age 7. It stood up like a toilet lid. It's fine now.
Critterina
At 12 yrs old I was nearly bitten, quite likely even killed, by a massive rottweiler. Took 6 nearby construction workers beating it on the
Critterina
(cont) head and yelling to make it stop chasing me. The owner came out a bit later and didn't even apologize. Still traumatized, can't look
Critterina
(cont) at a pic of a rottweiler without feeling upset. I might not be here today if those men had not protected me. Screw dogs.
GeneralPigly
Honestly, it makes you realize why that dog was so aggressive. Some guy's boxer once went after my young niece. It was on a long leash, /1
GeneralPigly
but the leash got caught on something before the dog could grab her (luckily). The owner didn't do shit. Just said something like /2
GeneralPigly
"Aww, you're not supposed to do that! You're getting a timeout later!" in this sweet tone to his dog. Some people suck as dog owners. 3/3
GneissPags
So lucky. MEDERMA is scar cream, uses onion bioactives. Recommended by my surgeon. Amazing. Even if way after surgeries. Best to you!
leeloumultipass
.
JennaLand
I tried that on a scar after getting my face sliced by a scaredy cat but it burned like hell and I had to wash it off.
GneissPags
Too early then. Wound has to be closed. Then put cream on red scar line. You can still do it now too despite length from time of injury.
FileWalker
.
BigFatJuicyMonkies
So what happened to the dog?
giraffesarebetter
They put him down after like 3 months
theyar
Should have been much sooner.
henteaser
The dog owner argued they weren’t responsible for your medical care? What a scumbag! You look great by the way, would never had known!
ididstayataholidayinnlastnight
My friend just got her meniscus torn (knee injury) by a huge dog and got nothing! People got to be responsible for their animals!!
giraffesarebetter
I agree. When a person assaults someone they’re held responsible. Animals can’t be so it should be their owners responsibility
ExTechOp
Is the dog still living? A surprisingly common reason why this kind of things happen is the dog has a brain tumor or something like that.
giraffesarebetter
Vet said it was a possibility but it ultimately got out down because no one wanted to keep it anymore.
BifPib
Generally speaking lousy dog equals lousy human.
Jasarg
Well you did say generally so I guess I agree...+1
Loser37
Or lousy previous owner. Dogs carry trauma with them just like people
kittenflare2718
Just saying, our shepherd has been through alot of training & love. I wouldnt trust him with anyone cos he has a vicious streak. Some (1
kittenflare2718
Dogs are just like that.
BifPib
There are certainly exceptions, but I've found good owners with problem dogs are very careful.
BifPib
There are also rare cases of normally well behaved dogs freaking out.
giraffesarebetter
Yeah she’s a terrible person for sure
jenniferlawrenceisabear
the good things about humanity aren't really human at all. our good qualities transcend us. our kids, be they animal or human, absorb them.
theyar
I thought it was your boyfriend's dog?
giraffesarebetter
His mom
theyar
Got it. Fact is: some dogs and their owners do everything right and seem great, until the dog snaps and reveals that they aren't fit for 1/?
theyar
human society. From a pure liability perspective it needs to fall on the owner, but sometimes we just end up blaming the dog, & there's 2/?
Kyuukichi
Hope you win the case and that bitch is never allowed to own another dog!
giraffesarebetter
Actually our lawyer dropped us cause there was no way to get any money from them because of various reasons
IRatetits
Did he tell you those reasons?
giraffesarebetter
No insurance and she worked under the table for her dad so she had no seizable income
OrnamentalTurtle
A bit off topic but please parents don't let toddlers run unattended in large dog parks. I see this weekly and it makes me cringe.
jenniferlawrenceisabear
Good advice, though dogs tend to mingle well in big neutral spaces I don't take my kids (and dog) there anymore because you never know.
giraffesarebetter
Videos of babies laying on dogs freak me out now lol if I had been a baby when this happened I would have died
nasreal
1 Most dogs that have been properly socialized have good bite inhibition, and typically will be very gentle with smaller dogs, cats, even...
nasreal
2 with babies. It is important however to make certain that you are always keeping a close eye on things with dogs and kids because...
nasreal
3 children do unpredictable things like suddenly make loud noises, grab for stuff, etc. Always use caution and good judgment but dogs are...
nasreal
4 typically safe and if anything protective of young children.
OrnamentalTurtle
Most likely you would have yes. Very glad you recovered god bless.
BlackLabsAreBest
Me too. Every time I see a story regarding mauled kids it's often by a beloved family pet who's never done it before. Be sensible people
jenniferlawrenceisabear
the only dog i would trust around my babies is one i've raised myself since a puppy. shitty owners = shitty dogs hands down
utahjarhead
Pro tip: Do NOT do a Google Image Search for "frenulum" on company computers.
1414145691
searching anatomy terms isn't going to get you fired from any company worth it's salt
utahjarhead
Yes, but a screen full of dicks very well may.
1414145691

stabbedintheface
My son was attacked and bit in the face in a park. Breaks my heart to see his scarred face
owlest
dogs suck
giraffesarebetter
Hopefully he heals well. My mom legitimately forgets it happened all the time
stabbedintheface
It's been just under a year. The scars have faded but not totally. Best part was the dog owner tried to blame..
stabbedintheface
.. my kid. They had their dogs off leash at a playground and apparently running kids kicks off their "hunting Instinct"
ifuckdragons
People and their fucking dogs, jesus
giraffesarebetter
Lol the owner of mine said I broke into their house
Ashleeey
Just out of curiosity, what did your boyfriend do at the time? Was he siding with his evil mom or did he try to comfort you?

OP looks like this girl I know. She's 28, but looks like she's 12. Being 4'8" didn't help her case either. Everyone calls her Tinkerbell.

I thought it was a 4 or 5 year old.
Puninthe0ven
I legit thought OP was a toddler at first and I was like their child was attacked wait no “I” wait how literate is this child. Oops.

I expected a 2 year old. I was like: Wait, she doesn't look like 2

I have a round face and also it was swollen to the size of a softball so that’s understandable.. I was 16 though
RoughJustice2k18
@OP had a face swollen up like a balloon from the dog attack - the physical scars may have healed but the emotional ones may take longer.

who ended up paying your medical bills? was the dog put down?

My parents, yes eventually

I had to get politically involved to get dog put down. She now owns 3 dogs. Good for her though and for you!
Sholk7
im not bashing what you did but it sucks bc a person is responsble for the attack not the dog
EccentricNimoy
Some dogs have been bred for brutal instinct alone. It can't be taken out of them no matter how cute and cuddly seems, they still have it.
LearnSomething
What a completely ignorant thing to say. Dogs can attack for any reason and it can absolutely have nothing to do with how they were raised.
donkeysareunderrated
I had a 6yo dogue de bordeaux that went after my 3 yo daughter a week after he did this to my 8yo cane corso. I put him down, not seeing 1/2
donkeysareunderrated
How it would have been my fault. Adopted him at 9m. He was fully trained and walked off lead. He was also loved by all of us.

theres two scenarios here: unprovoked attack and provoked attack. Im to assume it was an unprovoked attack mea ing it will do it again
QuackQuackAttack
Ha, dogs are bred from predators. Many breeds are designed to attack and defend.
giraffesarebetter
Dog was only put down when owners Mom decided it scared her too much to have in her house and Dad didn’t want it on my end.. 1/2

Not because it caused grievous bodily injury to someone? Smh. Some people!
melekoftd
In this country (NZ) either the dog gets destroyed or the owner tries to stop it, and the goes to jail after the dog gets destroyed.

As in if a dog bites someone it's automatically destroyed? What if the dog is intentionally provoked?
