That's not exactly what he said. He said they would get a first crack at basically gutting their departments, but if they didn't do it hard enough, then Musk would do it for them. He appointed complete incompetents to these roles anyway, so it's 12 of one or a dozen of the other at this point. It makes no difference, this is just about optics.

Some workers have been reinstated with back pay in some agencies, as far as I'm aware, while I believe other agencies are still doing cuts. I don't think the situation is anywhere close to settled.

I'll wait for the cabinet members to flat out refuse to do what Musk wants and keep their position before I'll count it as actual progress.
