I worked as a counselor in Taunton State Hospital last year for about 6 months. In those 6 months, I was unable to stay after it got dark. The property gave me such a creepy feeling. Every time I would drive onto the property, I just felt this heaviness come over me. It felt so dark; so negative. It also felt dangerous. I am a firm believer in the supernatural and the afterlife, so working here scared the bejesus out of me every time I went to work.
When I would go to work, I started going to the main building and ringing the doorbell so that staff could let me in to access the unit. After a few weeks of doing this and being late to work, I decided to start using my key to go in through the basement. Worst. Idea. In. History.
The basement of this hospital is said to be the most haunted part of the hospital. So I would walk through and there was this intense pressure. My ears would pop and this cold air would come over me. It was so intense at some points that I would need to stop walking and look around. I always had this feeling that someone was watching me down in the basement, or that I was not wanted there.
Over time I lost interest in the possible "hauntings" of Taunton State Hospital. Then, I took a client out for her birthday, and saw the scariest thing I've ever seen. As I drove past one of the administrative buildings (which had been reopened a couple years back) I looked over as my client pointed towards the attic window. In the window there was a person, a woman or a man. I actually rubbed my eyes and told myself it was a lamp or something, but then it hit me, that would make no sense because there are no offices up in the attic. I drove around a few more times, and as I returned, the figure had disappeared. According to staff, the building I saw this figure in was where children were held. So maybe it was a child or a staff member from the hospital when with was used strictly for psychiatric purposes? Who knows, but I never saw this figure again.
After I did some research, I found evidence by researchers of a male, white figure in the window. The same building. The same window. Was it a ghost? I don't know. I had never seen one before. And I never saw the figure again.
Client's have reported seeing a man dressed in white walking through the buildings. Some say he crawls the walls of the hallways, and others say he charges people as if he were in an overwhelming rage.
Over my time working at Taunton State, I head so many stories from my client's about their experience while staying in the hospital. Not only was the unit creepy just by its appearance, but it was creepy in a scary way. Clients reported feeling cold breezes come over them when the windows were sealed and it was the middle of summer. Client's reported things going missing that they had hidden and no one knew they had these special objects. They reported strange footsteps and slamming of doors in the unit.
I walked through the basement with a friend looking for a way to the cafeteria, to get a soda. Now, first off, we got lost. And ended up running. Both of us became confused and began walking back and forth thinking we could get to the cafeteria from doors we had already tried to go through. It felt like someone was taunting us because they knew we were trying to get somewhere. It got darker and darker as we walked through the basement. The pressure in my ears got worse, and I heard creaks and shivers shot up my spine. When I turned to look, no one was there but it felt like someone was standing there, watching us trying to find our way to the cafeteria. It took so long and we got so confused that staff needed to come find us and bring us to the vending machine. To this day it is difficult to explain this experience because it was so incredibly confusing to experience.
During my time at Taunton State, I found out that Lizzie Borden had been a patient there. To me, Lizzie Borden was an extremely creepy and scary woman, and that made the hospital that much scarier to me. Jane Toppan, a serial killer who murdered thirty-one people was also a patient at Taunton State Hospital in the 1800s.
Here is some background I found in my research about serial killer and Taunton State patient Jane Toppan: She was raised by a mentally ill relative, and ended up becoming a nurse. She used her patients as her test subjects. She murdered thirty-one people by poisoning, so of course she tested drugs on her patients, which ultimately killed them. The disturbing part of Jane Toppan was that she enjoyed watching her patients die, apparently it "aroused her" (sick I know). She had a habit of crawling into the bed of her dying patients and hold them while they died. Historians also report that two of her victims were her sister (many argue that she was a foster sister) and her husband.
Now when it comes to the basement, much of the horrific history that has been uncovered by historians took place in the basement of the hospital. According to articles and research I’ve done over the last couple of years, Taunton State staff was involved in a satanic cult which sacrificed their patients to the Devil. Now, I am not sure how credible this information is, so don't quote me, but all the sacrifices took place in the basement. When it comes to my experience at Taunton State, I felt like there had been so much pain and suffering in that facility. Something felt off, wrong and disturbing. So the way I felt, and the way other staff has felt over the years is quite similar. Historians report that they experience an intense feeling of negativity and suffering while touring the facility. The basement is so cold and frightening. You can tell that horrific events took place there.
The office I used was impossible to keep warm. I would keep the heat turned all the way up every time I went to work, and nothing worked. I could hear the heat turn on, and could feel it when I put my hand over it, but I could never get the room to actually get warm. I always attributed this to poor heating and piping, but now I am thinking otherwise.
I have tried to post this about 4-5 times. And nothing will post. I keep getting an error message. I have never had an issue posting things before now when I am writing about a haunted psychiatric hospital. Hmmmmmm……
Stay tuned. I want to post more about history after doing more research on the hospital.
#mostviral thanks for all the up votes guys!!!

You should research Northern State Mental Hospital. Creepy as fuck. They turned part of into a HS. It was also on Ghost Hunters.

Where is this located? I am going to start making a list of places to visit! @MrRogersNeighborhood
MrRogersNeighborhood
In North West Washington. In a tiny town called sedro wolley. They killed hundreds of people there "researching" frontal labotomies.

@MrRogersNeighborhood omg. I wish I didn't live on the east coast! I'll have to make a trip sometime to go visit!

Which parts of the facility were restored and which were demolished?
docintraining
@geraldwiththefingernails the main building was demolished. The remainder were renovated years back or built after the original building.
docintraining
@Jennyflur unfortunately we can't take photos inside anymore. Because of patient confidentiality. But I am heading down that way this week
Jennyflur
Oh wow that was super recent. I loved all the old pictures and your stories thank you @OP !
docintraining
@Jennyflur Yes very recent! I left for a few different reasons. But the entire complex is haunted. You can just feel it.

Good stuff, I appreciate the honesty. Said you were a believer and never seemed to embellish.
docintraining
@InformationAndSourceGuy thank you!!! I appreciate that. I am a believer. And I know what I experienced. No need to embellish if it's true.
Kaine999
Humans are terrible at remembering actual events correctly. Also true is a remarkably subjective word. Not that I'm shitting on you here.
Jameszombob
well, there were a few parts of embellishment "you could just tell..."
InformationAndSourceGuy
Well, I'm not sure I would consider that an unfair embellishment, seeing how OP said they were a fervent believer. I was really leaning 1/2
InformationAndSourceGuy
towards the idea of outrageous stories, not their personal frights.

The mind of the believer can certainly play some interesting tricks on perception. Cool pictures and stories, but stop spooking yourself.
XplodingUnicornGlitter
No. It's fun.

If you are looking for spookiness, you're going to think lamps in the window are ghosts. Proof to the power of human psychology

In the basement, I got soaked up to my knees going down the stairs because it was flooded, groundwater so clear/undisturbed it was invisible
