Confession of a kidless couple

Apr 11, 2022 3:04 PM

We both hate cooking and the past year or so we just stopped. I sometimes feel bad because im sure there are better uses for that money. But it sure is nice.

Edit: Thanks everyone! This garnered WAY more attention then i expected! For the record, we both know how to cook and are even decent at it. We just hate it.

Be kind to eachother.

I’ve found the reverse during the pandemic, got way more into creating stuff in the kitchen as an antidote to it

You guys could retire like 10 years earlier if you' invest the money. Just saying.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That’s not much more than our monthly grocery bill… although our kids eat like horses and we have to buy all gluten free for my wife ($$$).

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Wife and I used to do that. But we started meal prepping on weekends and are now much more healthy. Lost weight, more energy, etc.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

my family and i spend that much on gorcerey every month.. if you can afford it, you do youi

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 1

If it’s in your budget and you aren’t sacrificing something for it, go ahead! Maybe even spend on smaller shops, help the local economy.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Maybe try box meal program 3 nights a week ( like hello fresh) It’s super easy and it would be a lot cheaper

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Its your money, you can do with it as you please. That said there is easy foods to prepare. Look up one pan and skillet recipes.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

All that excess salt and butter is probably fucking up your health, too.

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

Heavy salty greasy foods! That is literally all I taste in most restaurants take out…no fast food

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The frugal community winces in pain at this

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's more common than you think. SO and I just deleted all take out apps. If we want fast food, we go out.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is there really a "better" use for the money if it has improved your quality of life? Why force yourself to do something you hate?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Heads up check the sodium content so you both don't have heart attacks it's fucking unreal how we're being poisoned

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Dang. Our budget is $75 a week for groceries for a family of 6.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

us too!

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Man, I'm really glad we're not alone!

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

we're never alone, we've got no kids, but tons of food!

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I spend more than that on groceries. My wife is celiac so food costs more.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Do you want the diabeetus? Cause that’s how you get the diabeetus!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That is ok, @op. Your money, your meals- enjoy every bite of it!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

The pandemic really messed up my eating habits, why cook after I spent all day screaming internally.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Well you'd be doing something instead of doing nothing. Maybe get your mind off the screams.

Guess there's been an extraction of the former Imgurians and subsequent installation of new Imgurians- You weren't roasted for being "Rich"

4 years ago | Likes 65 Dislikes 11

I was thinking the same thing!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No, it’s the old imgurians are still asleep.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

It's all about definitions I guess. When my family was legitimately poor when I was a child, I defined "rich" as never having to worry 1

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

about money. Years pass, I grew up, achieved "success", even though I don't really have to worry about money, I realize it all evaporates 2

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

if I wasn't working. Now, I define "rich" was being able to do whatever you want with all of your time without worrying about money. 3

3 kids. Groceries : $400 every two weeks. Sounds like I should be doing takeout.

4 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 6

Take out the kids.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Sounds like you should ask your kids about their math class more often.

4 years ago | Likes 23 Dislikes 0

Sounds like the kids should move out! :P

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yep, this is true. My boys eat like monsters.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

My mom took us kids to an all you can eat buffet once a week when we were in our growth spurts.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My aunt has three boys. She started shopping at restaurant supply stores.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I hate cooking too, but I've decided to force myself to cook, doesn't take long to make something b asic and it saves a lot of money.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Yeah, i think ive gotten spoiled with the variety i can get with ordering out.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Nowadays I spend around 40-50€ per week on groceries and I eat good quality food. But I live in the French countryside, lot of local product

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

so depending where you live, it may not be possible.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I wish I could do that. It's exhausting cooking dinner every night for 6 people. Especially when none of them agree.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I have potatoes, carrots and spinach from my garden. That's what we're having, you get a protein from the store

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

That requires time to garden. And motivation. And a skill that doesn't immediately kill plants.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Or being broke at home with some dirt and YouTube

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We do too.. with kids

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Same. Did our budget and I have 500 reasons to bring lunch now.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Same here.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Same. It's just easier sometimes. If you add up our takeout plus our meal prep service plus our groceries, I'm sure it seems insane. We /1

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

also give big tips though to gig workers, which pisses me off because I shouldn't have to feel like if I don't give them a big tip they /2

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

make basically nothing. No tips should be needed and people should be paid adequately. And then the price is just the price. Anyway, it /3

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

does drive the total up (same with grocery delivery). But, we're lucky to be able to afford it. /4

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Spend 1k a month on raw food just so I can play around. It’s all good. You do you.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

As someone who hates it, Why do you enjoy cooking? What's your favorite part?

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I enjoy the creativity, and cooking for someone I care about. I only really go all out when I’m cooking for my GF, otherwise simple stuff

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I like the be creative. Mix and match flavours. Try new skills. It’s also very calming for me. Though I understand why people don’t like it

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Cutting vegetables is cathartic

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That is literally my least favorite part of cooking... Everyone's different I guess :)

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I hate it too. As a musician, I spend countless hours making recordings that last forever and can listen to them any time I want with no /

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

further effort. But cooking takes several hours if you count shopping and dishes and you eat it in 20 minutes and it’s gone forever. It’s /

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

bullshit.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

Different strokes for different folks. I do it to relax. Besides you create the memory. It’s not always about tangibility

Imagine $1000 of Applebee's chicken quesadillas trying to make their way out of the other end.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Man I really love the word "house" as a verb meaning "to destroy"

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It’s 9.99 for one, so roughly 100 Applebees quesadillas. Someone could probably do it but they’d then shit themselves to the moon.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

I mean that's what like three a day?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

50 each, so one every day for dinner and most days for lunch. Totally possible. Definitely inadvisable.

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

As a restaurant owner. It helps when people call in for take out and delivery orders. 3rd party services take 30% off each ticket.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gotta be careful about how you order takeout from small places. Some of those delivery services are absolutely ruthless and the 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Restaurant can actually lose money on orders. A little place near me won't deliver because of this.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

They can just raise their prices on the apps or not join the service...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Plenty will join because they need to stay relevant to competition. This is a dumb take, blaming restaurants for an app's excessive greed.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

It's not competition if you aren't in the same market...

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

We do try to stay away from chains

See? You're helping!

4 years ago | Likes 73 Dislikes 1

But what is your view on whips?

4 years ago | Likes 47 Dislikes 0

Yes.

4 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 0

I would find it hard to stay healthy. Restaurant portions tend to be huge and cooked with lots of delicious things like butter. How do you

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

guys manage it?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They have a lot of iron in them, though.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Great, so that covers my greens right?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

And you're saving money on dish soap and water by not having to do dishes!

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 1

And all that recycling too! You are helping the environment ?

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Small businesses that pay their workers shit and treat them like slaves? I've been there. Why do they always get a pass?

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 15

Because they're usually locally owned and the money stays within the local economy instead of being split towards CEOs and taxes elsewhere.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 1

To be clear, not really a 'pass' but a slightly lesser of two evils.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

What?

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 3

I feel like I was pretty clear.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 4

I work at a restaurant that does to go food and I make great money. That’s where I was confused. Are you talking about chipotles or something?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

I'm talking about the vast majority of the food service industry. A restaurant that pays well is a unicorn.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 3

I get what you're saying but in general small business will treat you better than big business. Not all small businesses, but when your 1/2

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

CEO is someone you can actually have a face-to-face with things tend to go better. The layers of management massive corporations employ 2/3

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

To separate the real power from the workers is horrible. Every single issue becomes "We'll see what corporate says"

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's nowhere near as bad as it sounds. 35 bucks a day to feed 2 people. Hell, even TV dinners are about $5 a pop now,

4 years ago | Likes 289 Dislikes 8

Don't defend this lol. If TV dinners are $5 that's still over 3 times as much. Grocery shopping would cost more but cheaper in the long run

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 5

If they're supporting local business, and they can afford it, who are you to judge?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah our food bill for a family of 4 is around $1000 usd a month, groceries and occasional takeout. But it's NZ and it's f'ing expensive

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I do furniture delivery & get tips on pretty much every job. That finances my takeout weekly budget of around $150. I do cook on weekends.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Twice or three times a week. Healthy groceries. Probably 600-700 a month for two adults. Food is getting expensive. Sharpen the guillotine

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Yeah, but TV dinners are also way overpriced for what you get. Bulk buying/freezing chicken and beef when on sale is way cheaper.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Do we know for sure that $1000 in takeout covers the entirety of their food-related expenses?

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

This. I don't think so.

4 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

That said, for that same $5 I could make enough soup to last them most of the week, so it's relative.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 1

if they like soup. I hate soup lol

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

That's only one example, fortunately. Do you like stir-fry? Rice or pasta with toppings/sauce? I guarantee there's a recipe to fill you up.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I love pasta. I eat like 2 boxes a week. Lol.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I feed myself and SO on about $15 a day. Find some recipes online and start cooking from scratch. Save yourself ~$70 a week.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

But how many hours are you losing between prep, cooking, and clean-up? And what do you bill an hour? It's not perfect, just not as bad.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

1 hour maybe? We cook together so its quality time spent together. We smoke weed while we cook too so it's time well spent.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But that goes to my point. It's good that you enjoy it and have fun, but even at 10 bucks an hour, you're still @ 35 bucks a day. Not tryi>>

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

trying to harsh your mellow, just pointing out that it can easily be worth it. I've spent 25 years working in restaurants so I'm done with >

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

At this restaurant I'm the owner and not the employee. I also am paying myself in money saved from not eating out.

3 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

$16/day per person. That's not bad at all.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 2

Dayum, and here I feel like I'm swimming in luxury because I've started eating 5 bucks worth every day.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Still I remember 10-ish years ago $100 could feed four of us comfortably for just under a week. Not gourmet but not rice and beans either.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

I remember being blown away the first time I had a grocery trip that cost more than $100.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

For one meal, assuming they're not order takeout for breakfast.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Getting a giant sub from Jersey Mikes is 16 bucks, and that's 2-3 meals, depending on your size/appetite.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Okay. I'm just gonna go ahead and assume that they didn't have Jersey Mikes for every meal for a month.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Just one example. Panda Express bigger plate is 10 bucks and can easily be 2 meals. Family meals from Bob Evans or Boston Market

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I would think there are a couple of days where there is more than 1 meal/day.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Sure, but either way they're probably spending more than 16 dollars a day on food per person.

Is that "we spend a total of $1k for food/month" or "we spend $1k just on takeout/month"?

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

And another trick, Sams / BJs both sell restaurant gift cards at a discount (usually around 40 bucks for 50 in cards.)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Out of curiosity, how much do you spend on average on groceries on top of the $1000 in takeout?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Fresh fruit, bagel, milk, canned soup and eggs. That's about it.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Tried to make a wholesome dinner for the family, ended up spending more than takeout would’ve been lol

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

This! I’ve been telling my husband we need to spend less on takeout but I swear we spend more when we go grocery shopping instead. Ugh!

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Then there’s the cleanup, exhaustion&the variable that the kids don’t like what I cooked..or I just hand ‘em my phone to pick something

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Sounds bleak. Our life is so very different. But we're not American, so maybe it doesn't compare

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I used to hate this myself, but how much time do we have? Between kids and work and chores... something has to give for free time to exist

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

And so, the way to do this? Is pay. I pay for housekeeping and food so I can have some freetime

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Frozen pizza prices are nuts too. $7+ for a medium pizza I have to cook too, or I can spend $5-6 on one from little Ceasars that is better.

4 years ago | Likes 52 Dislikes 2

Look for specials then buy the quantity you would with the money it originally cost

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"Better" arguably...

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

And they are horrible every time. The crust is usually especially bad.
