Some interesting stuff from /r/wellworn

A tale of 2 teddies- my sister and I both got them at the same time, ~18 years ago.

Hats, past present and future.

An old CRT TV screen that has seen a lot of PacMan

Centuries of use

Entire brick wall smoothed out by ocean

Swing shackle

iPad from playing too much minecraft

Hammer accuracy

10 years in service. Finally retired. may the Force be with you...

The floor in front of the cashier at a restaurant that opened in 1924

The men's bathroom door vs the women's at engineering university

Willie Nelson's "Trigger", after about 45 years of use

"The D20s my dad bought in 1977 and my brother used through middle school in the 80's."

Angel's Landing hike at Zion National Park

Pete's Feet! Inside St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City, pilgrims have been touching and kissing the statue's feet for centuries

Old vs New demo chisel

Everyone gets cheap gas

"Silver Dollar my Great Grandfather carried in his pocket everyday for 20 years"

Well worn stairs in an old castle in Germany

What eight months of sharpening do to a butcher knife.

Retired hiking poles after ~2000 miles vs new ones of the same model.

Worn steps

A once whole metal grate that covered a bridge.

#12 I bet you'd get high as hell if you smoked that guitar strap

Thanks for this beautiful post. Saved in favorites because those old, well used things, still serviceable are so lovely to me.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

CRT is an arcade monitor not a TV and it's Ms. Pacman not Pacman.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

Looks more like fillet k Ives than butcher knives.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

If you like well worn stuff why don't you come to Italy? EVERYTHING is well worn here.

My drive stick looks the same

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

how do you people not lose or throw things away?

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The “centuries of use” path reminds me of the scene from the Fellowship of the Ring where Frodo and Sam encounter Merry and Pippin.

8 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of @op's mom

this!

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I didn’t know I needed to see this until I saw it.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

ACKCHYUALLY that's not a CRT TV. It's a CRT monitor from a Pac Man arcade machine.

8 years ago | Likes 60 Dislikes 2

TV is a monitor plus a tuner.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I think arcade machine is the point.

dude here - I always open those doors in that spot with my elbow. Door plates are groooooooooossss

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The plates get cleaned, the elbow spot doesn't

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yeah because the rest of the door evidently isn't?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

as an ex-butcher I think you're sharpening your tools too much dude.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My school is from the 1940s and our stairs look like that as well!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my schools old building is from about 1900 and I was always amazed that the steps if the stairs were worn out so much

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Soooo much asbestos...

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 3

My thoughts exactly

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Meh I was just in an Edison plant being ripped down. This is a very small amount, airborne anyways.

People aren't buying cheap gas, they're buying the gas that has the right octane level for their engine. Most cars happen to use unleaded.

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 4

Those are all unleaded

8 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 0

Last time I saw anything under 95 octane was in the previous century (and barely anybody used that - most went for 98, which also isn't …

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

… available to buy any more).

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most vehicles can use either of the 3 but people prefer the cheaper. Vehicles that require premium aren't as common.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As has been said, all gas in the US is unleaded. But to the point, owners manuals now say outright that > 87 octane is just wasting $$.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Interesting, over here only 95 and 100-octane are available. Back when leaded fuel was still around most people got 98-octane, though 89 …

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

… was available, but I don't remember anybody using it for their cars.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

someone didnt do a good job at carring for those poor victorinox knife.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The statues's feet are impressive. The rest is friction by rougher elements, but that one is just people's skin.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also their lips. And tongues. And more.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Time and time again is captured.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

#2 Uhh...past, noticeably less past, and present?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Well future if they want to wear down the present one into the condition of the past one, if that then they won't use the newest one yet.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Nah, the really worn one is retired, the worn one is still in use, the new one is in reserve for when the current one gets past usability.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes, he did

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

These are all super cool, but some of these are like "Why would you still be using it a year before it reaches this point?"

8 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 0

The D20s in particular stood out to me as this. Those are way beyond unusable, they must have gone through more than just normal use.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm thinking the D20s were cheap ones that went through a high-heat dryer cycle or something similar.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

This hiking poles. Like what are you even still holding on to??? How did it even get that far.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

Those are the bottoms of the poles, which wear away on the ground, the handles don't wear away that much.

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Wow. I thought those were the handles. I feel pretty stupid.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

They went through the carbide tips, then instead of replacing the tip, they kept going until fitting was gone.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

It's like wearing your shoe soles all the way down to the ankles.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Looks more like 8 months of over sharpening

8 years ago | Likes 254 Dislikes 18

or shitty knives

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

And those are fillet knives, not butcher knives.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

butchers use fillet knives... a lot

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Both are good for boning

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Those are boning knives, not filet knives. And butchers use the hell out of their boners.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Awwwwww yisss

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Not when they get used heavily everyday. If you get 8 months out of knives your doing good. 4-6 months is an average life.

8 years ago | Likes 102 Dislikes 5

Didn't think of that, you're absolutely right

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

These are butchers knives not chefs knives. Theyre cutting 8 hours a day probably.

8 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

Yeah, I'd say something like this. My hub is a chef and the knife sharpening guy came by like monthly.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

so if their everyday use is heavy, they got sharpened every day?

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

Yup. Touched up with a steel multiple times between breaks with a few minutes of sharpening at the end of the day to fix the daily wear iirc

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Many times a day

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Every time your knife hits the block it dulls a little, butchers usually deal with hanging cattle, same goes for hitting a bone, sinew, etc

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

WELL

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

2 extra characters when I'm close to the limit makes a difference lol

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My buddy works at a meat packers and I couldn't believe it either when he first told me. Knives don't last long

8 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 1

Well yeah at a meat packing facility. My friend is a chef and his knives are his Grandfather’s knives he used when he owned a restaurant.

8 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 1

It comes down to honing them instead of sharpening them every time.

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 4

Honing means to sharpen...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 38

different quality of steel will factor in a lot as well. cheaper, softer metal just won't last as long, and honing will have less effect

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

More so it's the kind of use like you noted. Different uses dull a knife differently requiring different amounts of touch up.

8 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

Not if you don’t buy cheap knifes that have to be sharpened after every cut. A good knife should retain its edge for a while.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

not if you're chopping meat for eight hours straight, no matter the knife going through meat and bone is going to dull the knife quickly

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

Well yeah after 8 hours sure.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

All bone cuts at work are done on the saw. The rest by knife. We don't have to sharpen daily.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Same here. 2 of us cutting, using 4 breakers& 4 boning knives. Full sharpen on everything every 2 weeks. Treat good steel well & it lasts

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Gas pump: It's clear that the cheapest (87% octane) is the most popular by wear, but the most expensive (93) seems next in line.

8 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Modern cars can use high octane gas if the engine computer can. Computer continually adjusts timing until it sees knock then backs off.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most stores don't actually stock 89 octane, if you buy 89, you are getting a 50/50 mix of 87 and 93.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Passenger cars tend to be tuned for 87. High compression cars, turbos, motorcycles tend toward 93/94. Don't know why they sell 89.

8 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

it looks like USA by the labels. Most of the cars from manu. only tune for 91 as I have been a few places where 93 was not available.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I moved to Colorado recently, at about 5000+ feet above sea level. You can't buy 93 here and 85 is considered regular.

Octane resists detonation caused by high temperatures/high compression. It actually burns SLOWER and makes less power in engines that (1)

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

aren't designed for it, or fuel management systems that can't take advantage of it by adding more timing.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

And dumb people buy expensive gas for cars not tuned to take advantage of it.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 2

No, everyone buys the one their car is designed for, and most cars run on 89. Only an idiot buys higher octane for a regular car.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

i always put 93, not sure if its much of a difference

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 6

it can actually be bad for your car if it's not designed for it

8 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 2

Higher octane fuels burn slower, and can leave deposits behind in the cylinder that end up glowing red hot and causing detonation (1)

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 2

as well as reducing the volume of the combustion chamber over time as it builds up more, causing higher compression ratios forcing you (2)

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

to continue using high octane gas to avoid pinging/knocking/detonation. If the manual calls for 87 octane, use 87.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

TIL female engineers know what the door plate is for.

8 years ago | Likes 750 Dislikes 37

Spreading germs?

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

The female engineers are a lie...

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

There also tends to be fewer female students at engineering colleges

8 years ago | Likes 41 Dislikes 3

Might be a combination of not many female engineering students, and them being shorter on average

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 3

TYL there's like 7 females in that engineering department.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also move the damn strike plate if everyone strikes the top of the door. You're an engineering college ffs

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My guess is that most people are right handed and to reach all the way across the body to open is just too much effort.

8 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 5

While this is probably the reason, still weirds me out since I'm a righty but if the door opens to the left I'll use my left.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

They put the door plate in the wrong spot obviously.

8 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

You'd also have to swap sides for the hinge

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I never touch the door plate b/c thats where everyone else touches. Of course, maybe most ppl dont use the plate, and Im touching same spot

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

also they're shorter on average so...

8 years ago | Likes 39 Dislikes 5

This was my thinking, too .

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 2

Men also have a higher acidity of their palms then women. My dad's perscription bottles are all worn off because of this!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 11

And now have more cooties

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

female engineers don't want to get germs from the push plate before touching their dicks!

8 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 2

please explain the dicks. I’ve never met a female engineer before... or maybe I have...

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I am confused.

8 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

And aroused

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Females don't attend?

8 years ago | Likes 104 Dislikes 4

How is this surprising to you?

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Never had less than 70% men in my engineering classes. Physics 2 at community college was 100% men.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Oh hell no. And if you do attend, say hello to harassment and having to work twice as hard to be respected.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'd say this is the most obvious answer.

8 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 1

Until you use Google and see the rates of women in engineering and sciences....you’re not an engineer I’m guessing

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Out of 150ish in my [Canadian] engineering class, 6 were female (4 Chinese, 2 white).

8 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

I should note that this was about 15 years ago.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Don't worry. Nothing has changed. Last year, I was the only girl in 3 out of 4 of my ME classes.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Went to a summer camp at a top engineering school; out of 150 students, about 25 were female. Also, that school has been coed for less 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

30 years, despite it being 140 or so years old.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Most likely this. Buddy studied mechanical engineering and females were at best 1:10 ratio.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I saw 1 female in my first year of hs engineering she dropped out in the first week, 7 years later never saw a female in class and the class

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Kept shrinking, 4 guy's were all that was left in my last class

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MechE has the worst ratio followed by Civil then Aerospace. I went for ME and NUE because I hate myself.

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bitch you don't know me

8 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

Found the not-engineer.

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

What a stupid thing to generalize about. Haha

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

90% sure it was because the ratio of men to women in engineering school was about 100:1 until just a few years ago

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's the door in tho

8 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 0

I’m just a carpenter and not an engineer but I’d guess it’s both the door in and the door out. There may possibly be another exit, though ;)

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Do women not do this?

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 3

I just hit it with my purse.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a female in MAE. The department is currently 94% male students with no female professors. The girl's bathroom is always empty. I love it

8 years ago | Likes 352 Dislikes 1

My university went from 7% to 20% over the time I was there. I remember my friend complaining that the bathroom might have somebody in it.

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm an female engineer and I have to share with the boys... So jealous of you ladies!

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

This is kind of similar to metal concerts. Between sets the 'crazy bathroom line' is inverted. Womens no line, mens around the block.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Female SW developer here. Couldn't agree more, it was the best thing about UNI.

8 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

Female welder here. Having my own bathroom is the fuckin BEST!!!

8 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

I've seen ladies rooms in old engineering buildings that definitely used to be coat closets.

8 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Some of our floors only have female or male bathrooms because they converted the male bathroom into a female bathroom.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Is it difficult being one of the only women? I'm a male occupational therapist. 90% of my colleagues are women.

8 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I've had rape threats made towards me. Guys say derogatory things to me on a weekly basis. It's alright. There are plenty of good guys too.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

See, I honestly can't imagine that. Kudos to you for rocking out in a crazy environment

8 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm a female getting my Master's in engineering and working part time at NASA. Both places bathrooms are always so empty I've actually run 1

8 years ago | Likes 79 Dislikes 0

That's a pretty cool part time gig.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Yea it's pretty awesome. Much better than my previous 7 years of teaching high school math!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How can I get to work at nasa?!

8 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I was a math teacher for 7 years, had a midlife crisis because it was awful, started with night classes, got internship, hired as contractor

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'm a primary teacher, adore science!!!

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Into other females because neither of us expect anyone else to be there. 2

8 years ago | Likes 64 Dislikes 0

That's both hilarious and awesome. I hope more women enter the stems. This shits a nerdy af sausage fest

8 years ago | Likes 25 Dislikes 1

When I taught math I used to try to encourage all my girls to be proud of being "good at math". It helped that I was young/relatable.

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'd go on a limb and say it's mostly the E that's truly a sausage fest, but I only ever got to saw that one example of it all, for a bit.
