Also interesting on the subject: http://gender.stanford.edu/news/2011/is-female-brain-innately-inferior
Also let's all do crazy science together.

As a STEM ambassador it's surprisingly hard to find high schools girls that are interested in science. This explains it pretty well.

You don't have to be told you're bad at something, just given the impression that you should magically be good at it without work.

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

That stat is BS. What about the rest of STEM? Physics? Chemistry? Biology? Math? Even higher tier business like Finance?

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 5

Majority female, along with every single other area of education at every single level.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Yeah I thought the same thing, especially with girls who want to work with animals.

I just did A level maths and in a class of 12 there was only 2 boys

66% OF GIRLS like science and maths, 18% OF ENGINEERING MAJORS are girls. These two stats have nothing to do with each other...

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 7

Science/math can be anything! My love of science has nothing to do with engineering. I'm a student nurse. The human body is remarkable!!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

It's cause this ad is bullshit.

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 4

The ad is a flanderized stereotype, exaggerated but not wrong.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Exaggerated to the point where it's completely lost all logic and common sense.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Compare it to the percentage of guys who like science and maths at the same age, and then we can come to conclusions

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 3

81.9% of Eng' mayors are male.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

barely 1/3rd of college graduates overall are male. Suddenly the picture changes when you include the context.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 6

100% agree, I just read through the comments looking for this. very different stats

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 3

I don't think "liking" science and math is equal to enjoying a field. I enjoy painting miniatures but I've no interest in majoring art.

11 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 4

Same I love my instruments but the idea of making money or a life from it is foreign to me. People say make what you love your job. But-

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure I would love it once it became my job. I've experienced this before with Programming.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I used to adore music at 5 years old. Because all it was was tapping a triangle. I grew out of it when I got older. So do many people.

Teachers in Sweeden were convinced they treated both genders equally, until shown evidence from CCTV that they didn't.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

More likely to tell girls not to run, etc. It's subtle, and it's lots of little things rather than one big one, but it's real. And pervasive

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Teachers in america are convinced they treat genders equally... then its proven they grade boys worse by default and discipline them harshly

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 10

Differing standards of gender is a double-edged sword. Everyone gets hurt, not just women.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Now tell feminists that.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 9

They know that. Most feminists try to just vouch for equality for women under the assumption that it'll be enough but (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

just trying to get more women into men's fields isn't enough either. We need to encourage it both ways. (2/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

To those saying this shit doesn't happen: it does. It absolutely does. My parents never discouraged me from becoming a scientist (1)

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 2

but I grew up very aware that the career path I was choosing wasn't "for girls." Nothing overtly negative or discouraging (2)

11 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 1

but it was there nonetheless. Subtle, but pervasive. (end)

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 1

Not to say the message of this isn't true, but I'm pretty sure you'd say all of these examples to boys too

11 years ago | Likes 67 Dislikes 32

Or women have a smaller inferior-parietal lobule, which is basically in charge of math processes in the brain. Einstein had an enlarged IPL

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 2

No, but there's definitely a stereotype of "women can't do math and science" that's really discouraging

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 2

Again, the message is fine. Targeting parents of girls isn't wrong either. It's just something that could happen to either gender.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

(1)The stats are also skewed. There are not a lot of women in engineering, but there are a lot of math/science majors other than engineering

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

(2) At my university, female students outnumber male students in the biology and pre-med programs, and mathematics is close to 50-50.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Women outnumber men everywhere except computer science and engineering, and computer science is about 10% of all degrees awarded.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

I too understand the issue, they just didn't portray it correctly. Moms are like that with both genders. It's sort'v a mom thing, really.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

They exaggerated it to make it obvious but I don't think it's wrong. These biases do exist, even in mothers.

I can see this being a path my daughter would want to take. She loves to dig, for worms mostly, but she's OBSESSED with dinosaurs!!

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Introduce her to paleontology, the study of fossils. I hope she gets to do whatever she wants! Still dreaming of archaeology too, in my 20s.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Not to be the jerk, but that's actually paleontology.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

JERK!!! (As an avid fan of Friends I felt like I should've known this...)

11 years ago | Likes 0 Dislikes 0

Oh man, I wanted to be an archaeologist until I learned that what I actually wanted to be was a paleontologist. Ended up in social sciences.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I don't see why she can't be a girly girl AND love science. There are plenty of women who are equally feminine and smart.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

Good point. Why should one exclude the other?

I have two boys and parents just don't let kids be themselves anymore. My toddler likes playing with dolls and in the mud. I let him do both

11 years ago | Likes 236 Dislikes 9

My brother and I were raised the same. We both had dolls, my brother had his kitchen set and I always stole his legos.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I've always thought it was a little weird when I saw boys playing with girls dolls and what not on here, 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

But then one day my parents pulled out toy babies I used to play with when I was really little. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My son loved dressing like a princess and play cooking when he was a toddler. I let him, no problem.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

True. I can't remember a time when my parents stopped me from mucking about and being a tomboy. Parents have to let their kids have freedom.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

After all, who's going to run the teenage mud wrestling in the future? ;)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Anymore? You think fifty years ago the average father would tolerate his son playing with dolls?

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 1

I was the same way. Dolls, teaparties, and house w girls. War, mud fights, and pirates w boys. My parents told me from the start that 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

2/2 just because I'm a girl doesn't mean I have to only like girl stuff...or even like it at all.

11 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 0

I remember a mom at the store acting shocked and upset that her daughter wanted a Batman coloring book, along with a Doc McStuffins book.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I bought my two year-old brother one of those play kitchens because he always plays with the ones in waiting areas. They want to explore.

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

If I had space, I would. I'm worried he's going to hurt himself one day because he tries to "cook" on/in my oven when it's off.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Exactly. Let them be who they are. Most kids like a combination of things that are considered girly and boyish, who cares?

11 years ago | Likes 29 Dislikes 2

Mine likes baby blue color & gets much flak about it. 'You mean this blue?'& they bring all shades of dark blue. Boys MUST like dark colors?

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

My friends little bro loves pink and purple, he plays with dolls and his fave Sesame Street character oils Abby, the flying fairy.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But he also loves soccer, playing in mud, and Spider-Man.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My son likes fingernail polish, fairy wings, Spider Man, and How To train Your Dragon.

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 0

The kid I babysit loves having his nails painted because he wants to be able to see his favourite colours all the time.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

My boyfriend is 24 and still gets his nails painted when we get pedicures.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

With coloured polish or clear?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My boys like nail polish, too, but I think that's the messy factor. But it's part of how I taught them left and right. One color on each >>>

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

You don't hear little boys being told, "It's a girls job to be an astronaut and cowboys." You're correct but you're missing the context.

11 years ago | Likes 108 Dislikes 20

No, you just hear them being told every single thing about them is wrong and evil. That's why 90% of suicides are men, starting at age TEN.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 2

11 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 7

approaching it more from a "they're told such things are beyond their scope" viewpoint than a "that's not for [sex]" one.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While not quite as bad, boys (even grown men) are discouraged from entering the nursing field. Very few respected male nurses out there.

11 years ago | Likes 31 Dislikes 1

And that's exactly the same problem as this one. Sexism is bad for everyone.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

Isn't that right, Focker?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Who are the 'respected' female nurses out there?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Nurses in general have to deal with massive amounts of shit (source: my wife is an ER nurse). But males typically face comments such as (1)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

"aww, how cute", or "why? Why nursing", or "I'm not comfortable with you as my nurse". However, this is not as common in the ER. (2)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've never heard "it's a boys job to be a scientist". I get what you're saying but no one puts it so harshly.

11 years ago | Likes 37 Dislikes 15

I have. My friend's neighbours were really surprised to find out that she would be studying chemistry in university: "But you're a girl?"

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I have and I would bet most girls who like science have.

11 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 7

Maybe 'cuz it's older, but I've been told multiple times in my career that women don't belong.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

eg. "You'll quit caring when you get married and have kids" "You're an exception. Women don't have the mind for this."

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Also, I still hear all the time less harsh things like "your son is going to love this" when I buy a science toy for my daughter.

11 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 3

I only know of here, but girls are encouraged just as much (if not more so) than boys, in fact nearly all the science teachers are women

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 4

Yay for you (not sarcasm, I promise!) People are fine with her liking science but they assume she's a boy based on what I buy for her.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

It's weird. The opposite stereotype exists in Ireland. Girls are better at math and shit in school, and boys (or morons) are meant to be>>

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Smart women here have been known to slowly give into the stereotype to smooth things over. Not all the pressure is from men, either.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Good at technical classes. Weird how shit differs place to place

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Technical as in what?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

usually it's more subtle, but some people do say things along those lines. they don't always mean it to be harsh or demeaning, though.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

That's the worst kind of bias, the subconscious bias people do without noticing. That it's not meant to be demeaning doesn't mean its not.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I completely agree. but it's worth pointing out that people don't always realize what they're doing & what impact they're having.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

No but little girls are given the message, "Math is hard" & "Science is for boys" when classrooms involve privileging boys over girls.

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 7

In my math and science classes the girls almost always did better than the boys.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

to be fair math is hard. i wish someone had told me... i'm a girl and i see your point but Honors PreCalc/Calc was a mistake. big. mistake.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

To be fair, that's nothing to do with gender.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

No it ain't. Stick with it. Even if you major in art or history, it'll pay off to get through Calc now.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

From my experience in school if anyone is privileged in a classroom it's girls.

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 11

And yet with your experience, the results produce male engineers overwhelmingly, so... maybe that's something to think about?

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I like how you're being downvoted. Girls were the top in every math and science class I've ever taken.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Read a study for a sociology class a while back that found that teachers actively discourage girls in math and science. Sad.

11 years ago | Likes 61 Dislikes 9

I had a female science teacher that was a major bitch. she had 2 other girls in her class besides me and she was nasty to all of us.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I can't find it! I sold my textbook and I can't find it online with my sucky recollection of the title/authors. Post grad problems.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

And it doesn't take a high percentage of teachers to do this to expose most people to this kind of influence.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

Me too!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You read that in a sociology class? That's funny, they never mentioned that in any of my math and science classes. -Man

In all of my education classes, the opposite is being taught. We are being told to make sure we don't encourage gender bias

You're living the dream. Are you becoming a t-rex? My favorite was always archaeopteryx :B

I wanted to be a triceratops!

RAWR, everyone. This turned out to be an amusing and capricious thread.

As a wolf, follow your dreams, friend reptilian!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Git offa mah lawn!

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I wanted to be a firetruck. My teacher crushed those dreams... and laughed at me.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Oeemmmgeee. Are you me?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

You just have to open the door

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dad said, it's time to throw childish things aside, but he didn't really say that, he said "Stop being a fucking dinosaur and get a job"

It's the fuckin' Catalina Wine Mixer.

"POW!"

I wanna make bank bro. I wanna drive a range rover.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Who says dinosaurs can't get a job. Seriously. EVERYBODY, DINOSAURS ARE PEOPLE TOO!

In preschool we were asked to go on stage during assembly one day and each shout out what we wanted to be. My turn, I announce I want to 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

be a whale. That was the day I learned that you can be whatever you want as long it's the same species. I am still embarrassed. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I scrolled through the comments to see if anyone had already said this before I did.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Only time I tell my daughters to get out of the dirt or anything is when they have a special outfit on for pictures or a party.

11 years ago | Likes 801 Dislikes 18

Save the clothes to put on them until you get to your destination! I don't mind kids getting dirty but my husband does, so I do their baths.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Which I'm sure is what's going on in that second gif.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Why!? Why do you want a normal serious picture!? Everyone has that it is so lame. Take a picture the way your family is not the way you want

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

It's like wedding pictures. The wedding is for the cameras, not the groom and bride.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Your username is very descriptive.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Reminds me of my mom yelling after me to take off my tights before running into the woods.

11 years ago | Likes 63 Dislikes 0

Those tights rip so easily. We go thru lots each year.

11 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

Haha, I got in trouble for wearing my ballet leotard into the ocean a few times

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Well, of course. Swans live in lakes, not oceans.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

My mom got mad about my bodysuit for gymnastics until she realized I was pretending it was a wetsuit. Then it was awesome.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I tried to go hiking in my church shoes one time. Mom didn't stop me but I learned my lesson since those things had no traction >_<

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Samesies. Or if they can't get their shoes dirty/muddy. (When school is in, they only have one pair of school shoes)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

If I tell them not to get dirt on their clothes, they accept the challenge. DIRT EVERYWHERE!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Special outfit for pictures or a party you say?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Which is, of course, when they want that dirt the most.

11 years ago | Likes 220 Dislikes 0

What's that mom? Jump in the mud pit in my brand new white dress? All right, if you say so.

11 years ago | Likes 45 Dislikes 0

Exactly, I just want 1 picture, then go tear it up, catch bugs, climb whatever.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

Yep. That thinking was how I ended up with an oil covered white lace Easter dress when I was 3. Dad laughed, Mom turned red head to toe.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Hah, how did that happen?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dad was working on a car and I was nosy. He never heard me crawl under the car with him.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I want my girls clean for at least 10 minutes after a bath. Is that too much to ask?

11 years ago | Likes 20 Dislikes 4

As a fellow mother of girls: Yes.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

lol I should have known. They immediately run outside as soon as they're clean. No white clothes and no dresses.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

We have dresses. LOADS of them. We just make sure that they're machine washable! :D

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

i prefer jeans for outside play. less skinned knees that way. Of course while in house they're in tutus or whatever they dress themselves in

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

We're raising girls, darlin', not raising dresses.

11 years ago | Likes 48 Dislikes 3

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

LOVE this.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I'm saving that. When I have children I'm going to put that in the nursery.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 1

My mother tried to force me to take engineering classes because she is one. I hated them. How about we just let everyone do what they want?

11 years ago | Likes 68 Dislikes 7

Exactly. But some women won't rest until men and women are literally the exact same at everything.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

My dad really wanted me to be an engineer. I was encouraged to be one from day one, but I just never had any interest in it.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'm a male. I get told I'm handsome, and my parents told me not to get my clothes dirty, and local park rangers told me not to touch the (1)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

Ok, but that's totally different from being told that it's "for" the other gender. Women are discouraged from it because it's "for men". 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Also, being told you're handsome is very different from being constantly bombarded by messages that say that your appearance is THE most 2/3

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

important thing about you. You're comparing apples and oranges. 3/3

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

If that's the case, then the words spoken in the ad should have said "That's for boys only" or "That's not for girls" or other obviously (1)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

animals because they might be contaminated, and my parents would probably get angry if I started gluing shit to the ceiling, and, being (2)

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

the younger sibling, my parents left the more dangerous work to my older brother. None of these made me think "Gee, I guess I don't like (3)

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

science or math." This ad's reasoning is absolute bullshit it's hard to fathom it.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 2

People do give up. I've seen it happen. Not just parent pressure but peer pressure, too.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

my sister is the same way, both of our parents are engineers, it wasn't easy for her but they eventually came around

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

That's kind of the point, having the choice.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Right, which we do by not pushing them towards something.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I don't want to discourage anyone that wants to be an engineer. But we do need a lot more women that want to step up and m=be mothers.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

That's kind of circular.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Motherhood doesn't necessarily preclude seeking a degree.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

How would that help? It'd be one more child and mother, unless you're urging adoption instead.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm not sure I get what you're saying. One more than what?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I liked 4th grade math. Cant say the same thing about calculus...

11 years ago | Likes 136 Dislikes 5

Are you saying that multiplication tables aren't the same as tensor calculus? STOP LIMITING OUR CHILDREN!

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

I'd actually like to see the distribution of responses to that question for each gender throughout schooling.

11 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 1

yeah that first image bothers me a bit. in fourth grade i liked the idea of science, not the meticulous reality.

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 1

That's a big reason why the first image is bs, in 4th grade you're doing the simplest math and science is just experiments in class.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

Calculus is a puzzle that you really want to see the bigger picture on, but you just end up slamming pieces together to just finish it.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I wanted to be an ambassador to England in 4th grade. Awkward I ended up in Biology.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Shhh, you're ruining everyone's chance to talk about how progressively thinking that they are!

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

Meh. It's important they have the choice. Forcing them all to be engineers would be just as silly.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Can confirm. I was corralled into doing Mechanical Engineering, I hate it and am quitting. I wanted to study history...

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Why is it bad to call your daughter your "pretty girl" but okay to call your son your "handsome boy"? I mean, that's practically the same.

11 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 3

Honestly, I can't remember much of what my parents told me about myself, but I do remember them constantly saying they were proud of me.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

So, it never really mattered what I was - I knew they were proud of me no matter what, and that was enough.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's because that's all girls are ever told. Boys are told they're smart, tough, they can figure it out. Girls don't get that, which is sad

11 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 8

Really? All I've ever heard is the "girls are smart, boys are dumb"/"girls rule, boys drool" kind of thinking.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

It's the difference between the promotional poster and how the teacher actually treats you as a person.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Goodness knows. I was always called smart and never pretty and ended up an engineer, sure, but those teen years were real tough. I've (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

been bitched out by parents, too, over calling their daughter pretty. There needs to be a mix or self-confidence gets all screwy. (2/2)

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Exactly! Encouraging a child in ALL areas of their lives is important for healthy self image. At work (daycare) I (1/2)

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

remind the girls that they're beautiful as well as intelligent. Same for boys. I love seeing their smiles when they hear me say it.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It's what's meant by it. "pretty" often goes together with "dainty, delicate, flowery, nice", while handsome goes with "strong, tough, etc"

11 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 5

I just have a hard time not telling my kids they're good looking, because they /are/.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Do all the compliments! My daughters are smart and strong and pretty. And I let them know it. I just worry it'll go to their heads.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

That's great! It'll give them a big confidence boost. I was more talking about my environment and what handsome vs pretty means there.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I feel the same way. I try really hard not to.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

Well, I also tell them they're smart and they're funny all the time too. My little girl is a comedian. She's 3, so she's not very good, tho.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Because there are so many girls who would love to be told 'You look really strong and tough'.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 3

Can't really tell if you're being sarcastic- but yes. Girls would love to be called strong, and they'd benefit from it.

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well women have distorted the word "strong" to mean emotionally strong, which sounds just as flowery. And calling them tough offends most

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 3

I'm sorry I'm not sure if you understand. How many girls have you met that would like to be told 'you look strong'?

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 3

Flip it around -- why *shouldn't* they like it? Did they feel this way from birth or learn it? Also, "pretty" isn't always a compliment.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Myself and all of my female friends, for starters. I'm Swedish though, and we're pretty far along when it comes to feminism and equality.
