So, here's a short rant.
The night guy, who never calls out, couldn't show up because he is sick.
My boss sends a mass text out asking for someone to cover it.
Everyone just ignores the God damn text and I'm the only one to volunteer, as always.
I'm editing this because I didn't explain enough before.
Our department is severely understaffed and with the off season, keeping people on is quite difficult.
We can't fire the bad eggs because then there would be pretty much nobody on staff.
I volunteer because I care about this place.
I can't speak for everyone else because they are mostly lazy pieces of shit.
Fuck you (insert coworker name here)
Also, any questions you guys have I will try to answer. Of course I have to be confidential about quite a few things.
CopperWench
The most important thing is that you tell me about the animals. That’s, like, crazy important right now.
OliverOcelot
I'm sorry and that sucks for you, but I guess I never concidered the fact that zoos are staffed 24/7
Minnakht
So how much overtime pay are you getting for eight additional consecutive hours right after your existing shift
castlemacaw
If you don't value your own time, why should anyone else? Hang in there, bud
CavalierNique
So many people would LOVE to work there and IMHO the quiet season is the PERFECT time to train new staff to replace them.
NickBlight
Seems more like a "fuck everyone but night guy since he never calls out" situation
thiswillnotmakesense
You look frustrated, Listen inner peace come with 5 words "that's Not my fucking problem"
DabSwabFamDab
Well, dont volunteer and let your boss man up and take the shift.
asmasm
Blame other people for your own decisions you regret. Not a recipe for a happy life, friend.
Aelok
Is OP mad at night shift guy that never calls in for finally calling in because he's sick? Or mad at nobody else for volunteering? Cause 1/2
Aelok
You're not justified in being angry at either of those people. Night guy sounds like he has amazing attendance. And, VOLUNTEERing .
Dsharppe
I used to do something similar at my job. Never once said No. Ten years later.. I've been promoted multiple times.
hummuslover84
Release the animals
iusedtodream
Or, they have kids at home, or dogs who need to go out, or other adult obligations, and rely on volunteers like you to angrily help out.
orangebicx
You can't be mad bevies you answered the phone when other chose not too you could of made the same choice
VitaminP6
Ever steal a penguin?
FernandoRumdebum
Caring about your work SUCKS, because people equate it to you being a pushover/easy to abuse.
THEfreshestbrew
I'm working 12....6pm to 6am.... if you're bored, hit me up to chat
Lumage
I mean a 16 hour shift at the zoo seems a lot nicer than a 16 hour shift in retail but it still sucks, sorry op
toddthewee
Yeah, the monkeys are probably a lot nicer at the zoo, less shit flinging as well.
MKDouma
Unpopular opinion: you dont have to volunteer, your boss should be the one to cover in these circumstances. Good for you for taking it, tho.
MKDouma
Your free time is your own. Your coworkers might actually be lazy bastards, but they know the only one who's gonna look out for you is you.
samtherat6
I think OP is more mad that no one else cares for the job, and that if they took the job they should care. It is a staffing issue.
SaticoySteel
If they don’t want to do a 16 hour shift it doesn’t mean that they’re lazy.
1414145691
Blame the company for not paying enough - understaffing is always caused by lack of pay and nothing else
iAmScaredOfTheUnknown
Why get mad at the guy that never calls in?
TheVoidListens
I don't think that's what they were getting mad at? More at the ones who are off that could have. (Don't quote me on the wording tho)
Sora1573
You sound right
ksizzPiSmuggler
But why should they? Sounds like a management problem not an employee problem.
ChromaticCorvid
You're on the money
lovanth
Are you guys hiring?
MariaNichole5
Help when you can, don’t burn yourself out. You matter too.
IdUpvoteYouButYoureAt69
What kind of background do you need to get hired at a zoo??
Julesvernevienna
I think it's a special training where you learn how to clean, feed, work with the animals and learn how to kill those that should be fed.
FinrodFelagundPrinceoftheNoldor
Depends on what you want to do. Volunteering- not that hard to get in, but the more involved jobs are very competitive. Generally you'd 1/
FinrodFelagundPrinceoftheNoldor
Want some sort of bio/pre-vet ( if that's your goal)/ environmental science type degree. Way too competitive for me, personally.
Buldge
I wanna know as well, too tired to look it up..
eateateatmorebacon
Elaborate on how it gets weird at night working at the zoos
ZappaFrank
Sometimes talk to the management helps a little.
ElbowDeepInAHorse
Rickyexpress
Oh great! Every time I'm like "who would write this?" it's frickin' @ElbowDeepInAHorse.
down2stars
That username.... I'm glad you're not OP
eateateatmorebacon
For you sir

Sooooo, what's the bear doing?
DrBuckarooBanzai
Well, at least you can jerk off while looking at the walruses without prying eyes peeking about
shardonnay
This made me laugh
GilderoyPopDropNLockart
Finally!!!
Flamingle
I mean if they aren’t scheduled to work they don’t have to work. It’s good you care so much, but they aren’t required to be the same.
SaticoySteel
Exactly, he’s calling them pieces of shit, bastards and lazy for no reason.
TangledMess
I'm in the same situ at work, it's budgeting. If higher management see that you can't cope, they'll increase budget/higher more staff
TangledMess
Maybe it works different for retail/zoo? Same amount of animals atleast
nellietta
Yeah doesn't make them lazy or bastards, unless they are like that on the clock too
SaticoySteel
It sounds like he calls them that when they didn’t volunteer
Flamingle
what do you do on a night shift at the zoo?
NotJuliaCaesar
Tuck them in
PunchInTheDicker
Kiss goodnight
meowmeowgoesthecat
But if you work at the zoo why wouldn't you want to be at work? I would rather be with the animals then humans.
ThisIsTheBestICanDo
Poop. So much poop.
altrdgenetics
... I still see no difference.
BluePaladin42
I stopped volunteering years ago when I got voluntold at Panera so much I actually worked an entire month straight. With no OT pay.
BluePaladin42
I started call screening.
Xandraelle
I mean, that was dumb of you. ANYTHING over 40 is OT. No offense, but if you don't stand up for your rights, prepare to be abused
BluePaladin42
No no, you misunderstand, I never breached 40 hours. Management was very careful to keep my shy of 40 for any week. But I never got a full-
BluePaladin42
-day off, uninterrupted, the entire month. THAT SAID, it was my first job and yes, I was naive, and dumb, af about a lot of it.
Iamthebullfrog
Super illegal.
BluePaladin42
Not really. I never got 40 hours, many days were short. I just didn't get a day off. According to the Indiana DOL, that's not illegal.
BluePaladin42
Not for adults, anyway
Iamthebullfrog
Ah ha. I misunderstood the number of hours involved. Well, super shitty at least.
JimJamesJimothyHalpert
You know you don't have to volunteer... let them figure it out you loser.
shhep
Yo, I need help. Can you volunteer me $100 and a quick handjob in the parking lot? Grow some balls, other guys have the right idea, they're
shhep
not lazy not showing for unpaid overtime. You're sucker for showing. What's in it for you. If helping is your gain then why the fucka re you
shhep
complaining. If it isn't, why the fuck are you showing up.
chuckpalookanook
Yeah. Don't volunteer and then bitch.
ActionJohnnie
eateateatmorebacon
Yep
ME2G
In some states it’s illegal to volunteer to do your job, especially with nonprofit’s.
ChromaticCorvid
I volunteer because the zoo needs help. Plain and simple
Everyoneisacritique
What are the qualifications needed? Just curious since it sounds like typical low quality workers that hate their jobs thus suck at it.
Ferrumkit
There is a tipping point. Sometimes a disaster must occur for them to solve a problem rather than triage it, usually inspection failures.
Arch4space
Don't voluntee at the place you work. If you do something well, or at all, get paid.
ChromaticCorvid
Dude I was in the military. This isn't nearly as bad as volunteering there.
ksizzPiSmuggler
Hold on. You were in the military and you're still falling for the "I need volunteers"? You were well indoctrinated indeed.
ChromaticCorvid
Volunteering on an aircraft carrier and volunteering at a zoo are not even the same ballpark there buddy.
VonKripplespac
You mean voluntold? I got that all the time. Sucks having an A in your last name. First on every list.
nesurame
Could be worse, your name could've been Aaron A Aardvark,
Minnakht
Yeah, OP used to go by "Antichrist" and it was frustrating, hence the name.
manicmalki
If you do a job do it with pride and help out where needed. Doing the bare minimal is a sign of laziness.
Zoltar666
Depends of the wage
illegalacorn
if you pay the minimum you get the minimum, basic economics
manicmalki
Same is true in reverse.
illegalacorn
no, wage is set in advance of work performed
controlsthepresent
As long as you give in to this shit your employer will never solve the problem. I deal with on call all the time, just gotta say no.
ZombieBrains234
I can say from exp, all that does is make them hire another person, which cuts hours from everyone. Doing what OP did is best thing to do.
DigitalPup
Depends on the job I would think. My job refuses to hire new people, and my department consists of 3 people (myself included). That said <1>
DigitalPup
I agree that OP needs to say no, and let their boss be the one who suffers a 16 hour shift due to no one else coming in. <2/2>
ididntgetthejobatfruitloops
As a Swede I'm gonna be neutral in this debate and say that banana bread is delicious. You should try baking it. Nice with afternoon coffee.
NotSoArtzie
pass me the meth bro
ghos5t7
Mind if I join you? does your gram make the best b-bread?
