But was that their goal? Do we even know what they were hoping to achieve? All three of those Coven Heads would have been outed like Hunter was, Belos would know it was them if they didn't somehow kill him then and there.

most likely they were just investigating to know what was up and would have been more prepared and ready to disguise their presence. The kids were dropped in there without any preparation or even knowing where or what they were in until a while after they got in

As far as I remember, the curse is implied to be a direct result of him eating shitloads of palismen. Eating more palismen stave off the curse briefly, but make it worse because, well, you just ate another damn palisman. He started doing it because it initially has potent healing and life-extending properties
