When you break a string during the solo

It's taken me 62 years to appreciate music like this, and it's lovely. Off to youtube for more.

I love how he just takes 1st chairs violin, 1st takes 2nd chairs, & 2nd takes 5th. Who knows how far back that thing gets past

What are "ogknots" and why do you no longer love them?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

damn decent of them

3,6 sec pit stop ladies and gentlemen...impressive heads up by 1st violin

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Ray Chen's stop in Seattle last month. I attended the final performance, which was brilliant and the audience ate it up.

He handled that well.

I actually prefer the second violin, a bit brighter and more vibrant.

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 1

More strings, too

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

To be fair at this clibur they're aware alternate ways to play the Same notes

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

You take the broken one. No you take it. No you take it.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Pretty cool. But not as cool as Stevie Ray... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxrxfPlS9fc

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fucking legend.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Where's Randy the guitar tech when you need him?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Props to keeping his place while switching violins as well.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The new violin moves from chair to chair and they tune it up the the chain until the soloist can get it again.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Is that true?

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Depends on the orchestra and the concertmaster, but yes.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, when the music stops, does the person who ends up with the broken string have to leave the game?

4 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

But can he play Fallen Leaf Turning on the Wind with 2 strings?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

That's exactly what I thought of

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Ohhhh…Froggie went a-c-c-courtin’, he did ride, C-C-Crambone…

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Going to see Stravinskys, Rita of Spring in Jan. Should be dope.

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

I had the pleasure of seeing it from the third row a few years ago. It is terrifying at close range… feels like being hunted. Loved it.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Rite of Spring! .. not sure who tf Rita is.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

Love the support from the audience.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The Fellowship of the Strings.

4 years ago | Likes 19 Dislikes 0

I'm Thinking it was Star wars music... or maybe Indiana Jones . definitely John Williamson though

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As impressive as the Stevie Ray Vaughn broken string video.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 2

I really appreciate me some Steamy Ray Vaughn.

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 1

Loved Stevie’s finesse

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

The way they did that so well leads me to believe that's not the first time that's happened to them.

4 years ago | Likes 94 Dislikes 0

Its not something you really practice or anything, its just an expected 'show must go on' courtesy. Its like a cultural norm.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Nobody is having meetings over broken string contigency plans... its just, part of the job that it can happen, and you're expected to help.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

It's not common that it happens to any one person, but we all know the convention when the people above us have an instrument issue

4 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 0

Props to him for keeping his place without playing as well.

4 years ago | Likes 11 Dislikes 0

I'd imagine any big live performance have contingency plans for most common things that could go wrong.

4 years ago | Likes 38 Dislikes 0

Indeed you're right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=686xoeQAVA4

At 1:23, you can see a lady restringing it live on stage.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Gotta love Ray Chen !

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Damn I miss going to concerts

4 years ago | Likes 315 Dislikes 2

I always wanted to go to one, still do but that's not gonna happen any time soon. :/

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Me too! I'm dying for the opera or something!

4 years ago | Likes 15 Dislikes 0

You may be in luck if Travis Scott gets into opera...(sorry)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Live in Utah. Going a concert with Mendelssohn violin concerto tomorrow! Require masks and vaccinations so I feel ok going.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I miss the opera. Don Giovanni played by we 20 somethings was mind blowing.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I was able to see Madame Butterfly right before lockdown in February 2020. I can't imagine being in such a crowded place and feel comfy now

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

3rd string violin player get's the hand me down

4 years ago | Likes 757 Dislikes 6

get's. wow.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

he now has the expensive Strat... I don't know where your violin went .. this one is MINE!!!

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 1

*gets

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

It’s ok it wasn’t the third string that broke

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

took a 2nd watching, but it gets passed around lol.

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

Well yeah, there's only 3 strings left on it. It's in the name.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2nd violin is very important I think

4 years ago | Likes 131 Dislikes 0

You're thinking of second fiddle.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

Also less likely to need that E string.

4 years ago | Likes 22 Dislikes 0

This is pretty much one of your main roles as third. Emergency violin replacement.

4 years ago | Likes 126 Dislikes 1

Just casually going through reading all the comments while listening and now I have hot chocolate down my front thanks to your name.. Ty lol

4 years ago | Likes 21 Dislikes 0

Welp. /a/YKC9dSa

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

4th actually here haha

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

3rd chair passes it off as well.

4 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 0

It would be funnier, but very expensive if they just chucked the violin at the back curtains and hoped it landed safely.

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

"Ooh a 2 million dollar stradavarius.... with a broken string." *YEET*

4 years ago | Likes 17 Dislikes 0

I clenched up as soon as those started changing hands like that. So much money being passed around there.

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

You may be shocked to learn that most of them don't play stradavarii.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

That's impressive. They're only halfway through a 20 minute song that is focused mostly on that violin soloist too.

4 years ago | Likes 770 Dislikes 1

a song? Does the violinist also sing?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 18

Own your downvotes! I also can’t stand when people call everything “Songs”

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 10

Genuine question. What should they be calling it? It's instrumental music, but what is the singular noun?

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

A piece of music, specially this is a concerto.

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Thank you!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So, stupid question, why is it called a solo when there's still other instruments playing?

4 years ago | Likes 35 Dislikes 1

I know its been answered but same vein as a "guitar solo" in rock. Still has other instruments but the focus is on the player not the band.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is more "solo concerto", ie a single soloist playing the melody while everyone else plays accompaniment, rather than literal solo

4 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

Not a stupid question!

4 years ago | Likes 24 Dislikes 0

Think of it as the focus is on one person, kinda like Han Solo.

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The difference between what the one person is playing compared to what everyone else is playing. Background Vs foreground

4 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 0

It's the only person playing that line

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

You're so stupid. The rest of us know everything about instrumental orchestra nomenclature.

4 years ago | Likes 12 Dislikes 0

whats the song? the end reminds me of a swedish 1980's popsong. I'm guessing he sampled some from it.

4 years ago | Likes 76 Dislikes 3

Hallå från ett snöigt å kallt söderort!!!

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Halloj från snöigt hooden i norrort.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Are you thinking about "Hand i Hand" with Magnus Uggla?

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

yes. first album I had as a cassette for my "walkman" back in the day.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

Violin Concerto in D Major by Tchaikovsky. https://youtu.be/cbJZeNlrYKg

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thanks!

4 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Damn good call and damn good sauce, master chef! It really is all about that one guy. I love the pass down. Ish still rolls downhill :}

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I was right. he did base it on that. been hearing this song since 1980s and never knew. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_i_hand

4 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 1

This right here is what the internet is for.

4 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

For a moment I thought you were suggesting Tchaikovsky had sampled from an 80s song. (1880s maybe)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

smile. it was from the first album I ever got on cassete for my "walkman". had that song on repeat 8)

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

How hard is it to pick up someone elses instrument and just start playing? I presume each one has it's own feel and nuance but I don't play.

4 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

As a person who plays a woodwind instrument, I find them all very different

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

There are little tweaks that are different, but all violins are fundamentally the same. His might have a nicer sound though.

4 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 1

I don't play either, but violins come in different sizes, to fit different arm sizes. I don't know how difficult it is to adjust to a 1/

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

different size. I imagine it's harder for a short person to play a tall person's violin than vice versa.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Similar to a guitar, honestly. Except there aren't generally any crazy custom violins like there are with guitars. The string type and point

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

of resonance will be different from what you're used to, but not so much that you can't quickly adjust. For a soloist this is not difficult.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

But you won't be able to play all-out like you might on your own. Drop from say... 100% of your performance to 90-95% probably.

4 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Damn that's a pretty piece of music. Can anyone identify it please?

Him and almost any Russian composer are *chefs kiss*

4 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I know little of classical but I know Tchaikovsky was a fucking interesting goddamn weirdo when it came to composing. (Personal Opinion)

4 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

How so?

4 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Well, the cannon thing is famous, but just listening to his music sounds... I don't know, different.
