I remember installing Windows from discs, missing last one. Turns out I'd left it on my dad's car under sunlight and it was melting.

This. This is why I cut the wire to the speaker on the modem.
iLynux
I thought the sound was analog, generated from the hardware itself, not a digital audio signal.
My modem was for an ISA slot and it had a big, black, round speaker on it. I snipped one of the wires, assuming it was just like 1/2
The old PC speakers you plugged into the motherboard. It worked. No more dialup or handshake sound.
tangybreath
We never had any sort of working speaker and we still got the sound.

I remember all those "free internet for Life" offers... What were they thinking?
notme222
I wish I could have been in the room when NetZero realized they had to cancel their "Shouldn't internet be free?" ads and start charging.
4 years ago, NetZero still had 3/4 million on dialup.
zacletus
4 years ago my ISP finished full fiber to home network (only 20down/1up for basic, now 60/3).. couldnt imagine still being stuck with dialup
Considering a staggeringly vast majority of the planet probably hasn't touched a computer, *shrug*

Shut the fuck up we all know there was nothing good about waiting hours for a pic of tits to load and then halfway someone pics up the phone
There was a certain thrill to it... Starting to load, getting closer, nearly done... But that is just nostalgia speaking
That thrill, its called blue balls and it is unhealthy
We used to wait 20 minutes for one still image. Now we ignore ads with actual sex acts looping in HD.

I remember my first 28.8 baud man that thing was smoking fast. Although I think I upgraded before i started playing C&C and Warcraft online

When I started out, the limit was 110 baud. I was amazed when 300 baud finally came out.
God I don't remember the real early days to much. I recall an Apple IIe and playing Pole Position on my atari.

"Dude! You got ISDN? SWEEET!", he types on his 110/20mbit cable & a computer, whose integrated audio chip is faster than the CPUs back then.
I tested out Cable Internet in my area when I was middleschool/freshman. Wasn't for sale I was part of the test market, I was god.
No one was on it. Just a few of us who got lucky and chosen. I immediately became a dump site for a warez group. So many cd's....
I remember the first 20 gig hard drive I bought for over 200 bucks. It was epic and cut down on the hundreds of burned cds..
It pains me to look at my purchase history of an online store I use - a 40GB HDD in 2002, $150... :D

I remember seeing some billboards and TV ads with "visit us online! (IP)" and thinking "we need to spell phone numbers, dude."
No way we were going to remember a bunch of IP addresses when we needed help with 1-800-222-3334

Well, obviously that particular example didn't exist twenty years ago. I don't remember when the push for URL started.
