Light DIY as promised.

Mar 15, 2015 7:48 AM

So... It started with a potato, 80GB's of awesome, and an Idea that would change the world....

Started as a used and abused 80GB 5th Generation iPod.

The back housing was in no better shape than the front housing.

Refurbished front housing and clickwheel with new OEM LCD screen. $10.00 ~ $15.00

The Back Housing

It took a few tries but I finally fond a company that is willing to put not only the 480GB capacity but also any logo as long as it is of reasonable size and 20 characters or less... lets see here... BurningVeryingImport... DAMNIT! $15.00

MORE POWER

A 2200mAh Li-ion battery to compensate for the current and voltage losses due to the mSATA SSD and the Converter is very helpful but it is not required for this iMod. It does allow for nearly 6 days of continuous playback before it dies and that is pretty dope you mother fuckers! $16.00

mSATA SSD

Crucial M500 mSATA SSD $199.99 ~ $240.00
To get an idea of how small this 500GB SSD is it is the same form factor and size as a laptop wifi card.

Putting it together.

This is where the headphone jack/hold switch connect to the mainboard. When removing and reattaching this particualr ribbon cable you must be extremely careful with the ZIF connector on the mainboard itself as it is notorious for snapping off. You must be careful with all of the ZIF (Zero Impact Force) connectors for the ribbon cables but this one in particular is worth an extra mention.

Upgrades Bitch! It's all about the upgrades!

The finished product should net me over a 300% profit from my initial investment. Thus allowing me to purchase three more SSD as I already have the parts to build three more. I've seen some of these go on eBay for nearly $1,000.00 USD!!!

Update: I will be putting together a complete how to that will include links for purchasing the required items and a breakdown of how to disassemble and reassemble the iPod classic. If you would like the link to the full DIY album once it is complete please put in the comments "After much consideration, I have decided that this interests me and I find you very attractive" and I will be more than happy to provide you with the finished album link. Thank you and have a nice day. Or else...

Front Page Update: I am nearly finished with the complete how to DIY and have already answered many of you PMs regarding where to get the stuff and how to get started. I still have a few to get to but it is my plan to address most if not all of these questions with my next post. I didn't expect this to go viral I wish I had no integrity so I could just post the eBay link for this iPod. If anyone is interested send me a pm. I also do custom orders for most devices. If I can't do it... well I guess someone else might be able to! Cheers :) Final update coming real soon!

Final update: http://imgur.com/gallery/sLEmG

This is sexier than it needs to be. Mmm, upgrades.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

It is for sale but this was not to advertise only to inform, educate, and of course a little bit of bragging :)

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I got a free 1st gen iPod Mini (with the coloured metal casing) with a bad HDD. I put in a new batt and a Compactflash card as an SSD 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

2/2 the CF card slots right into the stock connector and it ran hella fast afterwards. I used it till the clickwheel broke.

240 for extra storage is a bit much for me... Is there any way to put a simple SD card or similar in it?

8 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I have a 1TB 5.5th gen video with the wolfson DAC (best sound) dual booting iOS and RockBox with 39k .flac flies and still have 1/x

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

a few hundred gbs of storage left that I simply use as an external hard drive by partitioning it. So I have a device that has the 2/x

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

highest quality sound possible that also is set up as a bootable drive for windows 7 with space left over. This took me a very long time 3/3

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just one more thing. This can prove to be a very difficult mod to make stable both on the hardware end and especially the firmware. 1/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Proceed with caution and do your research and make sure you order the extended battery from the US. It's more expensive but it will fit. 2/2

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Is it worth doing it with a 120 m2 SSD? It would probably be ideal for the car and loaded with rock box

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

with RockBoxk IMO you are better off just using a single platter 120GB HDD. The 120 SSD is more costly and offers no major benefits.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

The worry is that my 3yr old thinks my current one is his phone - and often gets the occasional bounce test ;)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Except when he already has one left over.. also: vibrations. I personally wouldn't put anything HDD based into my car.

Could someone explain why the hell you would ever need more than 5000 songs on an ipod? Seriously? Someone would pay $1000 for that?

11 years ago | Likes 42 Dislikes 8

I have an ipod...that I acquired for free...when it was in the lost and found at work for three months and no one ever claimed it XD

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My thoughts exactly. I like music but to have all of it on a device is just stupid.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 5

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

FLAC is a type of song file, one that is "lossless" or has "perfect" audio quality basically with no compression. Uses alot more MB per song

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Or ALAC, which the iPod can actually play with Apple firmware

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

You don't need FLAC on an iPod.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This right here.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

OMG. Where do I start? (1) I have a giant physical record collection. Music is the best thing ever. I want to have all of it on my iPod...

11 years ago | Likes 26 Dislikes 1

? I don't think I have even listened to 5000 songs in my lifetime

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

After some research,I think I have what they call, musical anhedonia

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

Interesting. We all have things like that probably. For me it's food. I don't care for crazy food stuff so I suspect it's similar sensation.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

(2) It's convenient and portable. It also keeps stats, playlists, etc... My iTunes is at around 250GB of music and I would love for it to be

11 years ago | Likes 16 Dislikes 0

(3) ... all in one place. I have a 160GB and 40GB iPod, but typically only use the 160. As for why they ALL need to be there at the same...

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

(4) ...time, sometimes you're in the mood for something and otherwise you'd need to go sync your iPod every time. That's a start for why.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

I used to have a 1000 song collection. One day I realized that I hated... pretty much all of it.

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

Me too, I got about 900 songs on my note 2 and hit next for days

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

DSD

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

It's one of those uncompressed audio file types. A typical 2.8224 MHz DSD song weighs around 150 MB.

I have this same iPod. I dropped a bottle of wine on it and broke the screen. Can you help me?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I put a 32GB compact flash card in my iPod Color (4th gen) and it works great!

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can you message me some links to the sellers of the parts you bought. My battery only charges to 40% now and lasts about 3 hours.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Can I get the music off my classic ipod onto a hd? I know it's going to break at some point and I don't want to download everything again.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 2

There are many options. I like Media Monkey Gold.

11 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 0

You can just go into it in disc mode but everything gets renamed :c *rocks out to sweet DEJHF*

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

when you load these into some programs, iTunes being what comes to mind specifically, most of them will be converted back actual name

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Didn't work for me with iTunes, but this was quite a while back. I actually upgraded from a 4th gen to a 4th gen color to a 5th gen b/c (c)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(c) iTunes, which probably also helps. Sorry, long comment is long.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(c) Point being, it's been a fair while since I had to do this, so that may be a factor. Also, not much of it was originally bought from (c)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

(c) I kept having issues and they kept replacing them. Even got a brand new video b/c I wanted black and they didn't have refurbs yet. (c)

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

People still use iPods? I have literally not seen one for almost a decade. Haven't owned an mp3 player in 12 years.

11 years ago | Likes 36 Dislikes 15

Mine stays locked in my glovebox connected to my car, unless I get new music for it

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Still using my 8yr old W810i w 32GB microSD as a music player. Battery lasts forever, no data plan, no touchscreen. http://imgur.com/W9zRkxY

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Use my ipod all the time. The battery in those things lasts a decade and they're very easy to add music.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

IMHO touchscreens suck balls for music players (can't use them blind by feeling the keys since there aren't any). Also: no data plan needed

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I use my phone (Nexus 5) and a headset w/ 1 button (play, stop, next song) on it. No data plan required. I see the potential in an iPod tho.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

While not an iPod, I own a Sandisk ClipZip with Rockbox and 32GB. Battery lasts forever, reads any file type, and can drives most headphones

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

+1 for using Rockbox. I have the same device (as well as a Clip+), just need to get a bigger microSD.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I have one because I have no use for a smartphone and I don't want to pay for a data plan because I have no use for it.

11 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

You don't need to pay for data anymore. Providers like republic wireless you can use a smart phone with WiFi. I pay $10/month for my phone

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I would need a data plan because I couldn't fit all the music and videos that I want on the small memory of a phone.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

I work in a remote area that has no cell coverage, so yeah

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

So it's common to use roaming on phones to listen to music in the US (guessing you're US)? Here we just use Spotify in offline mode..

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Actually I'm canadian and work out of country in Papua New Guinea we just got spotify in canada about 7 months ago so I have been using that

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Just curious. Several who're replying say they don't have a data plan. Conclusion: people use data roaming for music in cars in US?

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I've got a Canada/US data plan but I never stream music with it, only stream on wifi and make some playlists available offline

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Also my classic syncs to my complete iTunes library and lives on my cars glovebox while at home, connected to my car audio system

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Yes. People still use iPods. I have a few (7 is a few right?), all are getting this upgrade when I have cash.

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

One for the car I can understand, but seven?! o.O

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

Yeah shit I bought one like two summers ago for a vacation when we drove. Lost it on the flight back didn't even care cause I got a phone

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Bought them broken with the intent of selling repaired, but SSD + rarity = profit.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Fair enough I suppose. I have loads of free time, I might do the same.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I feel like you're exaggerating a bit there

11 years ago | Likes 7 Dislikes 0

I specifically remember seeing an iPod when I was in upper secondary. My sister owns one, but I don't live there so that doesn't count

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

As an Android user, I still use my 120gb ipod all the time. I have so much music on it and it's easier than going to youtube to look it up

11 years ago | Likes 18 Dislikes 1

Also, BATTERY LIFE

8 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

As a galaxy user, mmm sdcards.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

only goes up to 64.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

MicroSDs now come in sizes up to 128 gb and full size sds up to 512.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

But aren't compatible with most android devices that only go up to 64gb

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Probably easier on the data plan :)

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

Also helps if you're in a 3rd world country internet-connectivity-wise.How about 500MB for 15eur.. per month, not per day.Welcome to Germany

11 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'm on a family/business plan: 6gb between 3 phones, with phones & call plan is about $180/month.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'm sorry. I hope it gets better there.

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I couldn't even choose a plan like that. Max. is 5GB and when used up it's throttled to 64kbps (0.064mbps) for the rest of the month .___.

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

This is essentially a dream for me. I love my iPod, but it will break eventually, and having a SSD drive in it would just be...immense.

11 years ago | Likes 166 Dislikes 0

Drop me a line when it breaks. I do run contests from time to time for free evaluation and repair.

11 years ago | Likes 59 Dislikes 0

Disregard this

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

The clicks on my wheel don't really work anymore and the jack for the headphones only let's it only go in halfway so I'll look forward to it

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

better late than never. over 1000 pms takes awhile now I'm onto the comments. Do you still have the device?

10 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

hahah blast from the past! Dedicated OP. Yeah I do and haven't used it since the jack issue. I looks like there could be a tiny bead inside

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Man, I have two of these back home that are broken, one white and one black. I miss using them so much, and the Apple "geniuses" 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

11 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

thank god u reply here becuz I have a serious issue. same ipod 160gb, but when I connect to CPU &/or disconnect, suddenly I have 0 songs 1/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

if i connect to cpu "ipod can't read contents", when I disconnect, I have 0 songs, even when the memory shows i have stuff on it. 2/2

11 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Not sure if you ever got around to PMing me I'm finally making my way through the comments. You have a bad hard drive or hard drive cable.

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

easy fix any one can do and I love to help if you still have the device and want it to be mroe than a paper weight again pm me and well talk

10 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

I'll keep this in mind! And even if I don't win I'd love to try to learn how to do this myself.

11 years ago | Likes 9 Dislikes 0

IMO iPod classics are the best way to learn. They are 100% modular making repair a breeze, somewhat cost effective and easy to fix.

11 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

I have one of those! A 120GB iPod Classic. Do you happen to have a guide somewhere, so I can see how to go about it?

11 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

nothing that I have made personally but if you pm the the issues you are having with it I may be able to point you in the right direction.

11 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0
