Lol this dog is trying to bury this baby. I see dogs do this all the time when they don't want their food.

Smart dog see humans covering small humans and copies behaviors y'all

Everytime this comes up everyone says hes just covering the baby to save it as a snack for later.

Labs are the bestest.

Labs, just labs.

We thought the same thing with our dog until she did the same thing to her poop in the backyard. She's just trying to bury the stink!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

*Evil Dog Voice:* If I hide it under this blanket they will think it ran away and give me ALL of the attentions. Bwa-ha-ha *evil laughter*!

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

Maybe the baby is sleeping on the dog's treats.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 0

Ya, I was thinking "is it looking for bacon beneath the pup?"

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

Or there's a "surprise" waiting in that diaper and the dog is trying to cover the smell

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

No, she's just covering the smell.

Your fur is falling off you silly little hooman

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

This dog is a better parent than either of mine were.

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

.....then you just finish with wrapping and you have a nice baby burrito......

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

I'll eat you later. Stay fresh!

The dog is even tucking the blanket in under that baby. "I will keep you warm human larvae."

9 years ago | Likes 13 Dislikes 1

I shall forever refer to babies as 'human larvae' now.....I chuckled heartily at that.

Burying its kill to return and devour when hungry.

Is this really an instinct to protect a "puppy" or is this to bury something unpleasant? Anyone actually know what the behavior is?

9 years ago | Likes 149 Dislikes 2

.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 1

Actually an instinct to bury food for later. Better not forget to feed that dog.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 0

I've seen this in dogs who are trying to hide their food from others so it's not eaten or taken away.

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 1

I can't speak for dogs, but a few different mammalian female species will bury unpleasant things (such as newborn pups) to kill them

Burying something unpleasant.

My beagle used to do this with fish we caught, even if they were sitting in grass. This is NOT "motherly" behavior

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 1

My doggo does the exact same thing (including the booping) to hide not-so-tasty-but-maybe-later treats in the blankets/crack of the couch.

9 years ago | Likes 1 Dislikes 0

My dog does this to hide her bones for later

9 years ago | Likes 5 Dislikes 0

I'd say mimicking the parents

9 years ago | Likes 14 Dislikes 2

I've had terriers. They hide snacks, but they also take care of babies. My kids were closely guarded by my dog, 24/7

9 years ago | Likes 27 Dislikes 0

My doggy (terrier mix) does this to hide his snacks. It's so cute.

9 years ago | Likes 2 Dislikes 0

My dog buries his special you duck he gets when he takes a bath. He guards that thing with his life. I know a you isn't a human but still.

9 years ago | Likes 4 Dislikes 0

I'll bite. What's a you duck?

9 years ago | Likes 10 Dislikes 0

The guy from Game of Thrones with no dangly bits.

9 years ago | Likes 8 Dislikes 1

More likely it's an instinct to copy pack leaders (humans for pet dogs). Probably saw the parents doing this and now just copies them.

Not true. The difference from wild wolves is that alpha isn't decided by force/dominance, but rather by respect and other social factors.

Youre right but igurians love the idea of alpha dog so not surprised you're being downvoted..

9 years ago | Likes 3 Dislikes 2

You literally just made that up.

9 years ago | Likes 30 Dislikes 3

Can he figuratively make that up?

9 years ago | Likes 6 Dislikes 0

No.. They literally didnt. It's called caching and dogs so it to things that smell bad or things they want to save to eat later
